Ok-Thanks--there are Rutledge family in Wilkinson and Adams Counties in
MS very early on-like 1815 and I thought that this might be the same
family (I am sure it is the same family but much more distant cousins,
etc)

Kate,

My Grt. Grt. Grandparents Robert Allen Rutledge & Louisana Wright
Rutledge,
went to MS for abt. ll years .   They came there from Walker Co., AL and

left MS to go to TX and then OK.

They left AL sometime after  1860 (probalby closer to 1868-69) and went
to
MS.   They left MS some time close to 1890 (most likely closer to
1885)and
went briefly to TX (for a couple of years) and then came to Oklahoma
before1890.    He rented land in Wade Co., Choctaw Nation, IT in 1891& I

found other records of his having rented land there as early as 1887.
The family apears in the 1880 Lee Co., MS census.

I believe that some others of his family (sisters, brothers or Uncles &
Aunts also went to MS for a time.     I am not sure why he wound up in
MS,
but I would speculate that he followed othes of his (or his wife's)
family.
But I have never been able to document why or how they came to MS.

Could you tell me which one of the descendants went to MS?  thanks

Dear Cousin Thelma,
You are right on the money!   Robert Allen Rutledge is the son of William
Manley Rutledge.    He married Louisana Wright in Walekr Co., AL.
Robert is my grt. grandfather and William Manley is my Grt. Grt.
Grandfather.     As you say William Manley is the brother of your ancestor
Edward Rutledge.

I may have it in my records that some of Edwards descendants may have gone
to MS, but have not actually realized that Edwards line may be the reason
that Robert Allen went to MS. as Edwards descendants would be Uncles, Aunts
& cousins to Robert Allen.    I am going to have to take another look at
yours and my kin folks and when and where they went in MS.

I took a look at my records and found that David & Alfred King were both in
MS probably after 1866 when they both took out letters of dismissal from the
church in Walker Co., AL in 1866.    Alfred King stated in the 1850 cs of
Walker Co., AL that he was born in .Pontotoc, Itawamba County, MS.     That
would mean that Edward or Edmond as he was sometimes called would have had
to have been in MS at that time, as well.    Do your records indicate that
Edward was in MS at that time?

George Copeland Rutledge, Alford kings son died in Tishamingo Co., MS in
1881 and Robert Allens family was in Lee Co. at that time.Alford's daughter
Texana was b. in Tishamingo Co., MS in 1882.    His next daughter Serita was
also born there in 1883 as was Alice in 1884, but the next child John was
born in Walker Co., AL in 1885, so the families must have moved back to AL
around that time.

I need to look at a map and see where Lee Co. is from Ittawamba Co.   Are
they close to each other?     David & Alfred King would be 1st cousins to my
Robert Allen, so he may have moved near to them shortly after he married.
I also found that Robert Allen's oldest brother moved his family to MS and
that is mostlikely why Robert Allen wound up there.

Can you tell me who his parents were? I'm reserching the Walker Co

went to find family and came back with a wife. My Edward is b/o Ron's

To DL Milner--I have been trying to contact some of the MS Rutledge's
for some time--I am related to John Rutledge who married Mary Downs as
his second wife--her two daughters, Mary and Nancy migrated to MS in
Jefferson Co Ms about 1815 or so--Mary married in 1819 to John Cupit--my
direct ancestor.  I also have data on a Rutledge family in Wilkinson
County.  Are either of these yours?  Kate

Thank you for the names and dates!

Besides Dudley Rutledge/Rachel Glass, Jane Rutledge (sister of Dudley
and Joseph)married Joel Glass among whose children are Lemuel Glass and
Joel Glass II.

As to parents of Dudley and Joseph, I have:
James Rutledge b.1740-1745 VA d.1822 Wilkes Co.,GA (Will signed
7/26/1822, probated 5/3/1824)-*a new contact has d. 5/13/1824 so I need
to revisit my original source.
m.1765VA Ann Owen (not Owens!) b.c.1753 VA (this would make her m.at
c.12 years old, but several good trees have that date; I had it as a
firm date from my great-aunt, but something's not right) d.April-May,
1837, Troup Co.,GA

Ann's parents, Thomas Owen b.1730 Goochland Co.,VA, d. 3/19/1805 Greene
Co.,GA
  [m 1)Jane Haskins]
m. 2)1753 Amelia Co.,VA-Jane Glenn b.c.1730 St.Patrick Par.,Pr.Edward

Note their marriage/Ann's birth date - I doubt she was born earlier.
Ann was eldest of 5 children.

Did you get to the concert?  Bush cancelled Charlotte because of the

See first e-mail--there are a lot of Glass family in Wilkinson CO MS as
well.  If Dudley's wife was a glass I am pretty sure the Glass men who
married about this time were her brothers  Kate
BTW  I tried the url in Pathetc e-mail and it did not work.  Could you
give me the correct one or tell me who the parents of Joseph and Dudley
were?  Kate
Sorry to be slow in replying but I couldn't find my notebook with the
dates.

In Wilkinson CO MS marriage records:
Book E, page 51
John A. Rutledge m Mary Netterville on 4 Dec 1828

Book E, p 66
Joshua Rutledge m Mary  Iler on 31 January 1829
Bondsman was Abram Iler

Book F, page 40
James Rawlings m Sarah Rutledge on 5 January 1835
Bondsman  Dudley Rutledge

Book F. page 70
James H. Cunningham m Nancy C. Rutledge on 18 July 1835
Bondsman Dudley Rutledge

It is possible there were more weddings in this time period of Dudley's
children--I just jotted these down to have to check with someone like
you when I had time.

Do you know the parents of Joseph and Dudley Rutledge?

Hi Listers:  I am a long term lurker on the Rutledge list because I am not
actively researching this line but I am descendant of Mary Rutledge that
married John Cupit in  Jefferson County, MS.   Mary's father was John
rutledge who married as his second wife Mary Downs.  He and Mary Downs had
two daughters, Mary--who married John Cupit and Nancy who married a McKnight
in SC, and moved with him and her younger sister Mary and her widowed mother
to Jefferson CO MS.

There is a Duncan Rutledge who first appears in Wilkinson Co MS (also a
county in South MS which was all part of the Natchez Territory as was
Jefferson County) in 1815.  I don't know who his wife was but there are a
number of marriages in Wilkinson Co and these appear to be his children as
he stood as bondsman or signed for the weddings.  These include:

John A. Rutledge to Mary Netterville on 4 Dec 1828
Joshua Rutledge to Mary Iler on 31 Jan 1829
James Rawlings to Sarah Rutledge on 5 June 1835
James Cunningham to Nancy T. Rutledge 18 July 1835

Does anyone on the list know this family?

Kate

Richard,

My name is Jeanne.  Mike Rutledge and I have just discovered that we are both
descendents of Alfred Henry.  Maybe together we can find out about Joseph Sr.
By the way, I'm in the northern part of the central coast in Santa Cruz.

Robert Prather was in his 40's when he married Margaret Conn:  in the 1850
MS census he listed his birth place as SC.  I note that the Rutledge's came
from South Carolina as well.  Did the two families know each in SC?  Or was
this just an accident?

Acccording to the Cupit Book, apparently John died and Elizabeth Downs
Rutledge came to MS with her two daughters--Did other members  of family
come to MS too?  I found a (as I recall) James Rutledge who married in 1815
in Wilkinson CO MS.  I believe that Robert Prather had a first wife before
coming to MS and I am looking for her as well.

I am NOT publishing   a  book--nor do I want to "take" someone else's
research.  I would like to talk to some one from this line of the family can
give me some idea of the movements of the family so I can search for the
Prather family there too.
As I am collecting data for my younger family members I would like to know
about John Rutledge and his ancestors but I do not need documentation, etc.

John Cupit married Mary  Rutledge  in Jefferson Co Ms in 1819.  Her sister,
Nancy had married a McKnight--Where?.   Children of John and Mary Rutledge
married children of Robert Prather, and eventually Robert himself married
Nancy McKnight MCcaa.  These two families lived near each other and there
were several intermarriages between 1824 and 1850--all in South MS.

Ann Elizabeth Wood was born Oct. 7, 1822 died in April 1864. She married William Rutledge. Silas H. Wood, myself, was born Aug. 2, 1824 will be 70 years old Aug.2 if living then. James H. Thomas J. yourself, was born Jan. 1838 will be 57 years old next Jan. if living. Mary A. Wood was born July 29, 1840 died same day my wife died Jan. 14, 1891. Jack, since that time my life has been a blank, I no not what is best for me to do. I visit about amongst the children, ride horseback when it suits me. But I am nor satisfide. I have two good houses and lots in town that I rent out, 320 acres pasture 7 miles from town , a few horses and cattle and about three thousand dollars loaned out at interest. A deed of trust on two good little farms and can hardly get money enough to support me. I make it a rule to pay my way as I go and not be a burden to any of my children. I have my own bed, chairs, writing desk, etc. and make my headquarters with M.L. Sanders ( Sally's husband) He is getting along well, some of the children are financially broken up. I would like very much to visit you and to spend a short time with you and others in Miss. and if I am ever able to collect what is due me and life and strength last I will most assuredly make the trip. I weigh 190 pounds but I am getting very clumsy and see that I am failing. The Lord has been very good to let me live this long. The family Bible I first bought was burned with my dwelling house in 1874. My wife and myself made this record soon after the burn and I think it is correct. Well Jack, if we never meet anymore on the earth let us try to live so that we will meet in that haven of rest prepared for all those that love and serve the Lord where we will be reunited with those loved ones who have gone on before us. May the Lord bless, guide and direct you through life and prepare you for that meeting, it is my prayer. Give my kindest regards to all inquiring friends and tell them to write me and be sure to write yourself. I will always answer your letter though I am very nervous, my eye sight and hearing are both bad, yet I am thankful to God that all is as well with me as it is. No more at present, only that I am your loving brother until death. S.H. Wood sigh...
