Kansas

Been busy cleaning files and getting rid of junk when I came across
this collection of Rutledges.  Perhaps some of you may find a clue here.

Amos Rutledge  14th Dist. 004 (aka Loyd Amos) my second great
grandfather

Jackson Rutledge 13th Dist 008 (possibly older bro of Amos)

Levi Rutledge 17th Dist

Lucy Rutledge 17th Dist

Margaret Rutledge 13th Dist.

S. Rutledge 16th Dist

Sarah Rutledge 17th Dist.

Can anyone identify those five?  Ginny

Sorry about that Lincoln Co. KS.  Thomas and Elizabeth were married in
Doniphan Co. KS and then move with his mother and stepfather to Lincoln Co. KS.
Kissicks came to Lincoln Co. KS about the same time but I don't know where they
came from.  Ginny

Hi all,  Going through my Rutledge history in Lincoln Co. and I found I did
not know who Bid Kissick Rutledge married nor who her children were.  I know
she was adopted by Thomas H. Rutledge and his wife Bessie (Elizabeth Kirby)
Rutledge in the late 1800 to early 1900.  I think in Linclon Co.  I know the
funeral for one of her adopted uncles was held from the Kissick home so there must
have been a good relationship or friendship between the two families.  Anyone
along this list related or know anything more?  I am happy to share what I
have on the Rutledges of Madison Twp.  They were the children of Martha Ann
Vineyard Rutledge Hancock and grandchildren of Deborah Naylor Vineyard buried at
Washau Cem. just west of Westfall.  Ginny in Wyoming

Below is part of an email that someone sent  me.  I am trying to find out if
this John Cotral had a brother named John  W. Rutledge who married Susan H.
Lyons.  Does anyone know? Thanks,  Cheryl

My line is Abraham W. Rutledge, 1786,  Maryland;
 Fletcher L. Rutledge, 1816, KY (brother of John  Cotral);
Abraham Wheeler Rutledge 1837, Vermilion, IL;
Wm. Franklin "Frank" Rutledge, 1892, Burlington,  Coffey, KS; Pierre Leroy
Rutledge, 1919, Collinsville, Tulsa, OK (my  father).

I found Jackson in the 1855 Kansas Territorial Census, listed in the
13th district. I found nothing for the other 3 children. I checked the
MO. marriages, and there is nothing for any of them. I couldn't find
Jackson in the 1860 nor the 1870 census either. Jan

Hi all,  Need a couple of questions answered.  Does anyone have access to the
marriages in Buchanan Co MO +- 1850.  I have no spouses for Wm kids-Jackson
b 1825. Caroline b 1827, Prescilla b 1834 or Cicero b 1836.  Wm is probably in
the   17th district of KS in 1855 when the Kansas state census was taken so I
think at least some of the kids m in MO.  Thanks for any help.  Ginny

Hi Pat,  Yes, and no.  I expect his wife died with the birth of
Gerald/Jerrel.  Loyd Amos is in Doniphan Co KS in 1860 with his wife Martha Ann Vineyard
(from Lake Twp. Buchanan Co MO) Children Margaret S.(m David Weese) George W, (m
Essie Swisher Thompson a widow) William R., Thomas and Jefferson A.  I have
found a Jackson in LA but I doubt if he is right.  It being the time of bloody
KS and then the Civil War I do doubt the all survived.  In Travis Twp Austin
Co I found Justice and J.  IN the households of the Eastman brothers.
(Eastmans had come from Jenning Co IN) One had a dau. m. at Paris Crossing.  Jennings
Co  IN.  Adrian was also in Austin Co I don't think I recorded the Twp.
No luck on Cicero however.  So yes I have found some in 1860 but not all.  I
found in 1870 in Edwards Co Texas Jerrel and he has a wife and a couple of
kids.  Since the given name Jerrel comes down to today I don't know if the census
taker got it wrong in 1850 or what.
.I have worked on this bunch off and on for years  Till now the help I have
gotten was "not our bunch"  So thanks a million for trying!  Really can't
imagine why I didn't join this list sooner.  Ginny

Don, This information keeps coming back to me as not deliverable. Do you have any ideas why?

Cousins, The attached photos are of Daniel Rutledge. He is the son of Carol and Donavan Rutledge of Kansas. Dan is the first modern man to wear a Great Kilt using the Rutledge Tartan. His wife is an American Indian. The result being that his family takes part in the Pow-Wows throughout the midwest. The Indian dance outfits that his children wear have the Rutledge tartan incorporated into them. Several of Dans boys also wear the Kilt. Dan and his family won first place in a multi- cultural parade in Topeka last July. A number of Scottish trappers and traders lived with the native tribes in the early days. Of course the Indians admired the Scots for there bravery. The Scots here in Michigan and Canada were the main fighting force against the Indians. Dan is proud to show his Indian friends the old type Great Kilt the Scots wore in those days. The Scots could live on a Sporran full of cooked and dried porridge. They did not have to stop and light a fire. So they caught some of the Indians by surprise. Also when fighting the English they could travel fast and light. I hope more Rutledge's start wearing Kilts of Rutledge Tartan. Congratulations to Carol for making her sons Kilt and accessories. ( Carol Rutledge  [email protected] ) Carol If I made a mistake regarding your family please forgive me.

I've attached a tree that I've put
together (original by Harry E RUTLEDGE, 1966, of California). He was
unsure of the connection with Elizabeth RUTLEDGE to BURKEand said:

"Elizabeth, a shadowy figure in the family. This compiler has been unable
(to) bring up any facts on her. Minnie Chalmers thought that Elizabeth had
died shortly after her marriage and Burke remarried and left Markdale."

Harry had Henry's name as John Burke. A granddaughter of Henry
called him Henry John so he is may be the same person as John Burke. If so,
then I have a connection to this branch of RUTLEDGE's. It appears that the
granddaughter had some info incorrect but if they are my Henry
and Elizabeth then it was Henry's first Wife (a Miss MILLS) who died
shortly after the birth of their first child; Henry then remarried about
1834 to Elizabeth. There is no record that Henry or Elizabeth ever got
to Markdale. She likely stayed in Carleton County, as her brother
Thomas did, and she married Henry Burke.

From Harry's E RUTLEDGE's chart, below, are the children of Hugh
RUTLEDGE, son of Edward and Elizabeth RUTLEDGE.
All the children were born in Kinawley, Fermanagh, Ulster,
Northern Ireland. Most of the children, except Alice, immigrated to
Carleton
County, ON, CAN about 1831 with a second group coming between 1836 - 1839.
The combined families settled near North Gower, in Carleton Co, ON. In 1835
most of them moved to near Delta, Leeds Co, ON. In the fall of 1850 some of
them moved to Markham, Grey Co, ON and one went to Thamesville, Kent Co,
ON. Eventually a few dispersed to Kansas, California, Maryland.

I'm particularly interested in Elizabeth RUTLEDGE, my gr gr grandmother,
2nd wife of Henry BURKE. She was born about 1814 and died Oct 1853 at
Carleton Co, ON. She and my Henry had about 10 children.

I've taken this info except for Elizabeth, above, from a tree prepared by
Harry Edward RUTLEDGE in Jul 1966. He was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1885
and lived at San Rafael, CA. Does anyone recognize names on this tree and
can you provide me with names and address of any descendants who would care
to correspond with me?

Thanks for your help,

Ray, in Nanaimo, BC

Great Kilt: 09/16/06

Richard,
I would love to see the pictures!
By the way, does Daniel see any PRYORs at the Kansas Pow-Wows?  My
Rutledges seemed to be in the same places as my Pryors were for several
generations before they married.  I had (perhaps still have) some Pryors in
Kansas.
Richard, I think I told you I have a Richard Allen Rutledge amoung my
living relatives.  He lives in northern California.  Don't suppose you've
crossed paths, have you?

He died in Witchita, Kansas, Oct 19, 1936. Do you think J. E. might be your John Edward? He did live first in Turon (west of Hutchinson) and then in Wichita. My father in law was the age of one of J.E.'s sons... which would make their birth around 1911. What do you know about your earliest Rutledges? Did they go to Canada from Scotland/England/Ireland or did they leave New England when it was making a break from England? Many loyalists to the King of England went north into Canada at that time. It would be interesting to know. In addition, Mrs. W.A. Rutledge and Mrs. C.G. Rutledge lived in Wichita Kansas around 1910. Anyone you know? It is not known if they were related to my husband's family. When my husband Donavon Rutledge was growing up in Wichita, there was a middle-aged couple named Donovan Rutledge and his wife whose name I think was Ruby. They were from a different family. Lots of Rutledges are stuck out on the limbs of this tree! But then I guess they know who they are and wonder about us, too. I will try to get some information on the Rutledge Brothers Planing Mill in Salina. It is a long ways from Atchison. Carol or Donovan From notes on my fathers family chart. John and Bertha Rutledge moved from Salina, Kansas in 1891. The Rutledge Brothers Planing Mill was owned by three brothers, John Rutledge,Charles Rutledge, and William Rutledge. The business was not enough for three families, so John pulled out and moved to Red Bluff , California. William Andrew Richard Rutledge , born Nov 4,1858 in Markdale, Ontario, died Mar 16, 1926, in Sacramento, Calif. , marrried Francis C. Smith of Illinois, born 1855, died in Sacramento in 1932. Charles James Golden Rutledge, born Nov. 27,1860, died in 1932, in Witchita, Kansas. Married Elizabeth Ellis, born 1858, died in Witchita, August 1949. Alice Melton, their aunt, daughter of Martha Letitia Rutledge, lived from 1880 to 1965. For 50 years she was secretary to succeeding Presidents of Witchita State Agricultural College. If you want more dope on this fairly obscure branch, just whistle. Ed Rutledge from California

Hi Jean...

I saw your post seeking info on Thomas Rutledge and a comment that a Thomas
Henry Rutledge moved to Collin Co., TX. and is buried in the Wilson Cemetery.
You also mention some Rutledges buried in Wilson Cemetery that you are
seeking add'l info on.... I think I may have info that will help you...The
folks you mention are, I believe, descendants of John M. Rutledge.  These
Rutledges were from Cumberland Co. KY, and had strong ties to TN.  They moved
later in life to Collin Co. TX and are buried in Wilson Cemetery.

We need to check dates of birth and death since several had the same names,
but I believe Hamilton C. Rutledge was a son of  John M Rutledge.  Ham was
born on Jan 11, 1848 in KY.  He died Jan 22, 1934 in McKinney, Collin Co.,
TX.   B.R. Rutledge is, I believe, Burley Rutledge, son of William and Alcey
(Willis) Rutledge.

At this point, I believe this William Rutledge was a son of John M Rutledge,
but I lack smoking gun proof on this point.  William came from Cumberland Co
KY.  He married Alcey Willis in Celina, TN on Feb 23, 1848.  I believe Alcey
had a brother named Burley Willis, who served with her husband William in the
same company during the Civil War.  Burley gave affadavits to help William
and Alcey prove claims for pensions, and I would assume they named their son
after Burley Willis.  Most of my info on Wm and Alcey comes from war pension
files, obits, and info from descendants of this family who live in TX.

I have more on this family, and would be curious to see more on your Collin
Co. folk.. The ones I have data on had strong TN ties (Wm and Burly Willis
served in a TN Cavalry Unit and lots of the Willis family was in TN.  One
confusing problem I've noted with county data from southern KY, like
Cumberland, and northern TN counties like Overton, is the Scott Line issue.
Often the data on my kin indicates they moved from KY to TN and back every
census.  But it appears what actually happened is the state line moved back
and forth over them as KY and TN argued an error made in a boundry survey..
I'm not sure now that they actually moved at all...

Anyway.. let me know if you'd like more on these folk... I can send you an
attachment with more complete data.

One last point.... do you know if your Collin Co kin had ties to the Joseph
Rutledge Jr line of Walker Co. AL?  I'm looking at the probability that John
M Rutledge was a son of Joseph Rutledge Jr.... the elusive Jack" Rutledge
that is mentioned in Walker Co AL history, but nobody seems to have data
on.... John M went by the name "Jack" or Jackie" and other clues lead me to
think he may be Jos Jr's son.  I'd be interested to know if your folk have AL
ties...it might lead to info that the two groups were related....   John
Rutledge in Oregon

Sorry I mislead you. The Thomas Henry Rutledge buried at Wilson Chapel
is the son of John Jane Gaw Brown Rutledge.  I know this because I
have copies of a letter and 4 post cards written between TH and his
mother Jane Rutledge in Pierce City, Mo. I have his death certificate
and it states he was born in Missiouri in 1850--no parents names were
listed because of a feud between the Browns, Gaws and Rutledges in
Jackson County, TN.  Thomas Henry was the youngest son born of that
marriage.  I also have a 5X7 photo copy of 5-6 adults that were listed
as children of Jane Gaw B Rutledge at the time of her death. (No date to
confirm the year but about 1874, more or less).

The other Rutledges I mentioned, I took photographs of every Rutledge
headstone and forwarded this information to the Ruts list with a cc to
Ron and Daryl Gardner.  It was through them I learned BR's name was
Burley, but since this wasn't my line, I just wanted to let somebody
know of these vast family of Rutledges buried in McKinney's Wilson
Chapel Cemetery.

If you would like for me to send you a copy of the headstones of
particular Rutledge relatives of  yours, send me your address and I will
be happy to forward this picture to you!

This Shadrack Rutledge continues to be a brick wall. Believe he is sthe son of William Rutledge. Who did he marry? Is he the Shadrack that served in the war of 1812? TShe children listed below was listed by Fern Olson Rutledge. She said that one of his sons went Kansas City and was probably a doctor. Does anyone out there have info on this family? This was in my father-in-law Wilfred Rutledge's handwriting. I think I have sent it to the list before but we have recently had people asking about Rutledge families in Kansas. Does this one belong to anyone? Wilfred Rutledge was interested in the names of J.R.'s children also being names from his family. Carol Brunner Rutledge J.R.
