Note: It appears few Rutledges ended up in Iowa, but a few have recently shown up, So here they are.Cheryl,

I am not familiar with Lafayette Rutledge, but also look for Fate/Fayette in your search, as this particular nickname or contraction was often used.

Best wishes,

Madison County Birth Records:
Rutledge, George L., born 00Sep1869, to George M. and Nancy "C" (Kale)
Rutledge.
Sarah Alice Rutledge, born 10Aug1864, to George M. and Nancy (Kale)
Rutledge. These two children are in Nancy "G." Rutledge's household,
1880.  If the cemetery records online are correct, these children could
not belong to Nancy C. (Kale)...she died in 1861.

There is a Dr. George M. Rutledge (1817-1876) among the Madison County
cemetery inscriptions, shown as husband of Nancy "C" (1829-1861).

In 1860 [Madison County] there is a George M. Rutledge, 44 IRE; Nancy
Rutledge, 31 OH; and Mary Rutledge, 8 OH.  [One Mary A. Rutledge married
W. C. Weddington in Madison County, 25Feb1875].

To further confuse matters, a G. M. Rutledge married "Nancy James" [?]
in Madison County, 18Oct1862. Remember Dr. George M. Rutledge's first
wife, Nancy, died 1861.  Question is, was this Nancy James above, the
same as Nancy "G".?

Nancy G.'s cemetery record seems to be incomplete; it reads her parents
were James C. and Rebecca (Ellis).  But James's surname was omitted!
And it gives Nancy's maiden name as Weddington-Rutledge.  If Nancy was
married three times, maybe Weddington was her first marriage, then
Rutledge, then Baugh?

Sorry, I didn't sign my email when I sent the Edward C. Rutledge  obit.  It's
just me, Cheryl, gr gr grand daughter of John W. Rutledge who  married Susan

I found the obit as I was researching some of my Smith line from Fountain
co. Indiana.  I had recently found out that they also had ties to  Montgomery
co. Indiana, so was just poking around and seen the two Rutledge  obits that I
have sent.  My Smith/Rutledge line ended up in Vermilion  county, Illinois,
Appanoose county, Iowa and Tama county, Iowa.    Other surnames connected to my
line that I know of other than Smith, Rutledge  and Lyons are:
Searl
Baker
Watts
Huffman
Neth
Pulber
Snyder
and somehow, Blackford, but I'm not sure how just yet.

JUSTICE RUTLEDGE MAY APPEAR IN DENVER COURT

Denver(INS)- A justice of the United States supreme court may appear in one
of Denver's lowest courts.
Justice Wiley Blount Rutledge 54, was charged yesterday in traffic court
with reckless driving and taking the right-of-way, as the outgrowth of an
automobile collision in East Denver.
Driver of the other car was James Slaughenhoup 37, of Denver who was also
charged with reckless driving.
Slaughenhoup, a freight clerk for the Union Pacific, suffered three rib
fractures and his wife received cuts and bruises.  Justice Rutledge was not
hurt.
The justice, a former law professor at Colorado University, is vacationing
in Boulder, Colo.
His lawyer said that if the case comes up in the near future the justice
will appear in traffic court just like any other citizen involved in a
misfortune.

The info I have on this family - Ann Rutledge had a sister named Nancy
Cameron Rutledge b 10 Feb 1821 White Co IL; m 14 Oct 1846 Van Buren Co IA to
Anthony T. Prewitt... his biography:
http://iagenweb.org/boards/vanburen/biographies/index.cgi?review=1049

John "James" Rutledge, father of Ann, was in business with a John Cameron
and that is probably how Nancy got that middle name. Mentor Grahm (Graham)
is mentioned in the website sent by Pat Sproat earlier today. He was Ann's
teacher.  It also mentions "Nancy" as Ann's sister.

My grandmother always said her Rutledge family were related (cousins - how
far back is unk and I have not found any proof)to Ann Rutledge's family.
After 25 yrs of looking, I have given up!!

I am going to scan the page that has the pencil writing on it so that
others
can maybe help to judge whether the name is Nettie or Nellie  and Gunn or
Guin,  While at the hospital today, I read several  chapters of the book and
am
thinking it is mainly going to be a love story with  very little
genealogical
info.  There are a lot of  names mentioned, such as:
Reverend Peter Cartwright,
Nance Cameron who was the best friend of Ann Rutledge,
Ole Bar,
Snoutful Kelly,
 Jo Kelly,
Mentor Grahm the Scotch school master,
Doctor Allen,
John McNeil,
William Green,
 Phoebe Jane Benson,
Mirandy Benson who was a mother to Phoebe,
 Buck Thompson,
Jack Armstrong,
Windy Batts,
Kit Parsons,
Unknown Offutt.
Abe Lincoln remarked that in Indiana they called him Abe Linkhorn.
If anyone would like to view the pencil writing, I will send it to them via
their private email as I think attachments are not allowed on the mailing
list.

Does anyone know of a John Rutledge family member that might have died around
1880?  This John Rutledge would be the one that was married to Susan H.
Lyons.  I am almost certain that my grand father was not a son to John and Susans
daughter, Nancy Jane.  Nancy Jane married Abner E. Smith.  I can't get two and
two to make four here.
In the 1900 census for Sharon twp., Appanoose county,
Iowa........................
Nancy Jane Rutledge Smith says she gave birth to 8 children, 6 of them
living.
There are 8 children living with them in the 1900 census and I know that one
of the girls (Effie) was already married to Jerden Peek and a son James Elmer
was also married. So Effie and James would make 10.  If only 6 of Nancy Janes
children were living, where did the other four come from?   And, Nancy and
Abner were married in 1894.  There is an 8 year span between the first four kids'
birth dates and the last several.  The first few kids were born from 1881
through 1888.  The next few were all born from 1896 on.   On Abner and Nancy's
marriage record it says that it was Nancy's first marriage and Abner's second.
Sooooo, how can Nancy be the mother to the first four kids?  I NEED HELP!!

Kirk - Karen and Wendy,

In November Kirk  wrote about his line - KIT 24555.

Hi, Kirk Rutledge here. My wife is the one who receives and sends the
genealogy info...I just supplied the cheek swab! No, seriously, she's been
trying to figure out how to upload info to the website, or maybe she just
hasn't had time to do it.

I track my earliest ancestor to Peter Rutledge NC/VA (about 1780). We are
on vacation so I don't have access to our files. Lineage goes Peter
 -Lafayette-Mathias-Jesse Perle-Keith Carlos-Gary Keith-me. Sometime around
Jesse Perle our family moved to Iowa. I moved to Oregon in 1985.

 Happy Thanksgiving!

Could we talk about your line a little more?

Your 25/25 exact match with mine and Noah's results warrant more
investigation, particularly since Noah's ancestor was also Peter
Rutledge in the same time frame.

Noah's ancestor Peter was, we think, the son of my William in Stokes
Co., NC.

Have you talked to Wendy who supplied the information about Noah's
line?

My Rutledge line stone wall is Thomas Wesley Rutledge, born about 1850.  Married Cynthia Marie Hutcheson about 1870 in Monona, Iowa and died in Nebraska.  His son, Thomas Sherman Rutledge was my great grandfather.  Born May 16, 1870 in Iowa or Missouri and died October 30, 1918 in Clearwater, Nebraska.  He married Mary Etta Williams in 1890 in Clearwater.  Their children were Claude Ansel Rutledge, Verna Mae Rutledge (my grandmother), Zada Rutledge, Myron Rutledge, Lawrence Elbert Rutledge, and Loran Rutledge.

Hi again,
This 1910 Washington Co ID census for Henry S. Day confirms his second marriage to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Orcutt.  The other info checks with the earlier census info I have gathered about his father, mother and family.
Eph G or H is Ephraim H Day, brother of Henry S. Day.

Nellie/Ellie T Harris Rutledge was b ca 1863 in Iowa, daughter of John P Harris b 1838  IL and wife Mary A -unk- Harris b 1846 MI.  The last trace I have of Nellie/Ellie is the 1885 Weld county Colorado state census.   Nellie has 5 siblings, two of which are J. Delmar Harris and Isaac J Harris -both b in CO - enumerated on 1900 Washington Co ID census, there is a listing for Dellmer and J Harris - ages and birthplaces the same as the two brothers I mentioned.   All of this is pure speculation, but the best I have had for a number of years! Mable and her mother may not have moved to ID until after the census in June 1900.

A check of the Washington Co ID website did not produce any info that confirms Mable Rutledge Day died before 1905.   There were no cemetery listings but that is not the end of my search - and the search continues.

Thank you again for your help.  I can always count on the generosity of the Rutledge clan!!!

Don, I also have a relative by the name of Ted Rutledge Theodore?) married to
an Esther ?Rutledge, and had a son Ronnie. they lived in Tama, Tama county
Iowa. I think they were still alive in 1970.  They lived a few houses from my
family but I didnt know they were related then.  Still dont know how they
were related, but I was told that Ronnie was a cousin to me. probably a
second cousin.  also, a Carrie Rutledge married a Fred Buckley, and lived in
Tama Iowa in the same time frame.  I think Carrie was a 2nd cousin to my
mother and was should have been born in the early 1900's.  Cheryl

My grandpa James Elmer Smith was married first to Eva Peek on January 6,
1904. She died of TB at the age of thirty. She is buried at Otterman
Cemetery, West of Molton, Iowa.
They had one daughter, Ada born 11-28-1904 and was ten years of age when her
mother Eva died.

Ray Smith was suppose to be a twin, but his twin died at birth.

Abner Smith died when the kids were young, leaving Nancy Jane, the mother to
raise them.

My grandpa Smith married Nellie Lorraine Harl on July 14, 1920. The minister
that married them was Dick Givens in Molton. She was born in Memphis, MO. She
was born January 18, 1902. Her mothers name was Rosetta May Garmon and she
married James Isaac Harl, a farmer. They called him "Cap."

Elmer and Nellie Smith had four daughters, Beulah, Bernice, Beatrice (my
mother), Beverly, and a son James Elmer Smith Jr. who was like another dad to
me. All are living except Beulah and James (Smitty). Beulah was married to
Clifford Young.  he worked for a envelope company in Des Moines and was
killed on the job. They had three children, Jim and Joe and  a daughter Judy.
Beulah died of cancer.

Smitty (James E. Smith Jr.) his wife Alvina (Domingue) Smith and another
couple were killed in a freak storm that hit Lake Livingston, Texas in 1986,
the year after my dad died. I went back for the funeral and not long
afterwards had a heart attack at the ripe old age of 39. I blame it on my
work and the loss of my dad and uncle Smitty so close together caused it.
