Subject: [RUTLEDGE] Indiana Rutledge dead  end

 Hello to all
I am new to this list and  relatively new to genealogy research. I have
hit a dead end with my  great-grandfather Charles A. Rutledge, born about
1846 in Tennessee,  married to Carrie, or Caroline Willard, and living in
Kokomo, Indiana  in the late 1800s, perhaps in some other Indiana locations
as well. Any  information or guidance is appreciated.

this is on the 1910 Marion Co. Indiana Indianapolis twp census.

Cheryl,  The only name on your list that sounded familiar is Rachel Smith who married John B. Rutledge in DeKalb, IN. According to the census she was born in N.J.  I haven't looked for any of Hiram's siblings, so don't know about that. My connection is through Hiram who's son Wm. Henry Harrison Rutledge was my Gtgrandfather. He was born in Rolling Prairie, IN., 4 Feb 1855 and died in Stevensville, Berrien Co., MI 29 June 1941. He married Mary Elizabeth Richards da. of Eli Richards and Lena Starr. Hope someday to make that paper connection to Michael Rutledge through John B.  Thanks.  Mary

[email protected] wrote:  Mary, I was just reading your email to Stephanie. I am sure that your John
B. Rutledge must somehow be tied into my John W. Rutledge (b. 1838?
Illinois) (married Susan H. Lyons). In my Rutledge/Smith line I have a Hiram
Rutledge, a John B. Smith, a Rachel Smith (who was b. abt 1844, Illinois) and
connections to Fountain co., Indiana, Maryland and Brown co., Ohio. There may
have been other counties in Ohio that my Rutledge/Smith line lived as well.
Some other surnames that connect to my Rutledge line other than Smith are:
Huffman, Neth, Hays, Thomas, Liggett, Parker, Washburn. These surnames were last
living in Vermilion co., Illinois. Do any of them ring any bells?

1880 census list in Virginia Washington Co. Virginia

Here is how the kids are listed for Moses  Rutledge and  Catherine
Rebecca born 1840 Ohio
Arthur born 1841 Indiana
Elizabeth born 1842 Indiana
William born 1845 Indiana
David Rutledge born 1847 Indiana

Valentine Rutledge born  1849 Indiana would be 31 in 1880

Anthony Rutledge and Catherine  are age 60 which makes them in the  same age
bracket as
Moses and Catherine
Robert Rutledge born 1862 Virginia
Nancy Rutledge born 1864 Virginia
Valentine Rutledge born 1844 Virginia age 36

the 1880 census list Moses with the name of Anthony Rutledge
but what proves this to be the same family is
the son Valentine is living with them age 36 -- there is an age difference
of 5 years,
but  did this Moses Rutledge and Catherine leave Ind. and go to  Virginia??
something to
ponder about ?

BOONE COUNTY:

Dear Rutledges:

My "on again - off again" approach to research on my Rutledges frustrates me and may frustrate some of those of you with whom I have corresponded from time to time. I have a habit of printing copies to "read later" only to find them months later and wonder how many e-mail address changes the sender has had or even if they are still alive.
Going through some of my old files today, I found both queries about lost relatives about whom I had some first hand knowledge and a record of gravestones I had taken from the Shannondale, IN cemetery. I hope this general posting to Rutledges will be found by some of those searchers and make up for my snail's pace response.

First, I could not find reference to this particular cemetery in a list of IN cemeteries yet I have personally visited it twice within the past three years. It is located in Shannondale, Montgomery, IN virtually on the Boone County line. For those Virginia Rutledge searchers, there were VA Rutledges living in both counties and within a mile of one another. Some of those Rutledges (Montgomery) arrived between 1845 and the 1850 census. I have not researched the Boone County Rutledges to estimate their arrival date. Until I prove otherwise, I am working under the assumption that these are related Rutledges but don't yet know how closely.

Second, here is the list of gravestones I could read (highlighted). There are many more too badly deteriorated to be readable but along side or between Rutledges in what appeared to be family plots. The non-highlighted names I researched in the Crawfordsville, Montgomery, IN public library and some of these are in the Shannondale cemetery as well. I will be returning to the area in June and will be glad to take photographs and conduct more research. The cemetery records have unfortunately been lost to fire and we may never know the names from some of the unreadable markers.

*Edward (P) Rutledge b. 11/26/(1821), d.  11/7/(1886) m. to Elvira (Rutledge) b. 4/2/1829, d. 10/11/1897* I'm unsure of the protocol on grave stones. These were marked with a single date that I have assumed to be the date of death and had years, months and days they had lived which I have subtracted to extrapolate a date of birth. Edward's grave was difficult to read and could have been 1866 or 1886 but I have chosen 1886 only because it is closer to Elvira's 1897. I add this to avoid someone accepting my dates as absolute.

Catherine J (Rutledge) b. 9/18/1819, d. 8/8/1853 next to Unreadable name b. 7/3/1813, d. 12/25/1853

Hannah B (Rutledge) b. 11/1/1847, d. 7/11/1878

Rosy Ann (Rutledge) b. 7/18/1798, d. 9/18/1868

Thomas E Rutledge b. 1/5/1791, d. 12/22/1872

Since my notes are now a couple of years old, I will confirm this information in June. There are others there that I want to reconfirm. Those names include G. D. Rutledge and Sarah A. Gordon, Sarah E. (Rutledge) wife of Joseph and
J. A. Rutledge b.1846, d. 1919 m. to Angeline LaFollette b. 10/15/1850, d. 4/4/1913

Malinda J. (Rutledge) b. 6/30/1844, d. 10/3/1922 m. to Martin Burroughs b. 3/1/1837, d. 4/7/1911

If any of these names are of interest to you or you have additional information that might help me in this quest, please let me know.

The IN Rutledge family is very interesting.  My William b 1795 (1850 census
and prior census agree) I understood in TN.  However I find him in Jennings Co.
IN in 1820 and then in 1830 in Harrison Co. IN.  He is in Buchanan Co. MO
Rush Twp. for the 1850 census having with him children born in IN and MO.  I
believe he married Diantha Trindell in Jennings Co she was a widow maiden name I
believe was Eastman.  I later find no wife with Wm in MO though he had a son in
1846-7 there so I assume she died before the census of 1850.  The two
youngest sons are found with E. D. and Buerll Eastman in TX in 1860.  I have done
this off the top of my head but if there is a chance there is a connection I will
be happy to check dates etc. and post more completely.  Ginny in Wyoming

Hi Jim and List,  This Henry could connect to my William RUTLEDGE b. TN 1795
m probably Martha W. Moody in Maury Co. TN 23 Dec 1820.  He was in IN by 1823
when his first proven daughter was born and in Harrison Co. by the 1830
census.  Before the 1830 census Martha had apparently died as there was no female in
the household old enough to have had the children as listed.  In the next
year or so he appears to be in Jenning/Jefferson Co. where he m second Diantha
Eastman Trindell a widow.  Before 1848 he is in Buchanan Co. MO where another
son was born.  I can go into this bunch in more detail if anyone thinks they fit
in.  Ginny in Wyoming.

I have been casually researching Edward Crockett Rutledge, born in Virginia (Blacksburg area) ca 1817, eventually settled in Montgomery County Indiana (Shannondale) between 1840 and 1850, had a son William, born in Missouri. I have been unable to link ECR to his parents in Blacksburg nor have I been able to determine exactly when he left Virginia, how he managed to be in Missouri, and when he arrived in Indiana. Family records show a William as father but no documentation.
Do you have any information on this particular Rutledge?
By the way, there appears to be an Edward P. Rutledge, also from Virginia who settled just down the road in Indiana (Boone County) about the same time. EPR is burried across the county line in Shannondale, Montgomery County, IN.

DETROIT (AP) -- A masked man ordered paramedics to step away from a teenager who lay bleeding on a stretcher from bullet wounds, then killed him with a shotgun blast to the head, authorities said.

Police on Tuesday searched for the gunman who killed Billie Rutledge, 17, on Detroit's north side.

Investigators said they were trying to determine whether Rutledge was killed because he was connected to, or knew too much about, the March 12 slaying of Shadad Yousif, 45, a businessman who lived on the same street.

Police said two paramedics found Rutledge lying in a driveway early Saturday, bleeding and calling for help. They put him on a stretcher and cut off his clothing to find the gunshot wounds.

But as the paramedics carried Rutledge to the waiting ambulance, they turned and saw a man with a shotgun who said, ''Watch out, watch out,'' police said. The paramedics ran a short distance and heard two shots.

The paramedics were not injured.

Hi Pat,  Yes, and no.  I expect his wife died with the birth of
Gerald/Jerrel.  Loyd Amos is in Doniphan Co KS in 1860 with his wife Martha Ann Vineyard
(from Lake Twp. Buchanan Co MO) Children Margaret S.(m David Weese) George W, (m
Essie Swisher Thompson a widow) William R., Thomas and Jefferson A.  I have
found a Jackson in LA but I doubt if he is right.  It being the time of bloody
KS and then the Civil War I do doubt the all survived.  In Travis Twp Austin
Co I found Justice and J.  IN the households of the Eastman brothers.
(Eastmans had come from Jenning Co IN) One had a dau. m. at Paris Crossing.  Jennings
Co  IN.  Adrian was also in Austin Co I don't think I recorded the Twp.
No luck on Cicero however.  So yes I have found some in 1860 but not all.  I
found in 1870 in Edwards Co Texas Jerrel and he has a wife and a couple of
kids.  Since the given name Jerrel comes down to today I don't know if the census
taker got it wrong in 1850 or what.
.I have worked on this bunch off and on for years  Till now the help I have
gotten was "not our bunch"  So thanks a million for trying!  Really can't
imagine why I didn't join this list sooner.  Ginny

One thing that I don't understand is that Rachel says that the marriage book
showed that Abner Smith was the son of James Smith.  I sent off to the
Vermilion county genealogical society and got the marriage record for Abner E. Smith
and Nancy Jane Rutledge.  The date of Oct. 19, 1894 is correct, but Abner
listed his father as John B. Smith and Susan Liggett.   I found a John B. Smith
and a Susan Liggett in Fountain co., Indiana in 1860 with a son Abner age 19,
and later found them again in Vermilion co., Illinois without Abner in the home.
These are two of the places that I know my Smith/Rutledge line lived.  So I
think maybe there is a typo on the name of James Smith and it should be John
B. Smith.  On the 1900 census for Sharon twp, Appanoose co., Iowa...you will
see that John, Ray, Bert and May are not the only children that Nancy Jane
Rutledge claims.  I am so dog gone mad that there are no 1890 censuses.
I knew the Ted (his name was Theodore) Rutledge and Esther Grong that Rachel
has listed.  They lived next door to me for years when I was growing up, but I
never knew they were related.  Their daughter in law, Pat Rutledge recently
passed away.
I would be very curious to see what children Rachel has listed for John and
Susan in book one.  Thanks for sending me this info as some of it is new to me.

My Father's name was Alfred Aaron Rutledge. His fathers name was William

His father was married before he married my grandmother and had 2

That I know of.

Any help you  can give me in my  quest to find my  family roots would be
appreciated.

Yorick,

OK!   I am just going to have one more say about this.   In the beginning
you did not list a birth date for your Grandfather.   You said " there was
about 40 years between me and my father  and about the same between him and
my grandfather"

The key word here is "about".    You did not mention that his birth date was
"I think about 30 Jan"   The key word here is "I think".    I have learned
the hard way, not to lock in on something as fact that I do not have
absolute proof of.    It will cause you to overlook tons of information when
searching if it is not in fact, set in stone.

I have lived in OK all of my life and have never heard of IT being
misrepresented as IN.     If in fact it was ever used in that sense, it was
a mistake as IT was never designated as IN.    IN has always been the
designation for Indiana.    If it was ever used in that context it was a
mistake and not a common mistake.

What I am trying to get across to you is this.    You have a lot of unproven
information.   This James Blaine Rutledge has a great deal in common with
the information that you do have on your Grandfather.

Point:  You do not know where your Grandfather was born. This James Blaine
Rutledge (and by the way, how many other James Blaine Rutledge's have you
found anywhere?) stated on his draft registration that he was born in
Okland, IN.

You will be making a serious mistake if you do not check him out in the
Indiana Records.   If you don't pursue this further, you may find yourself
coming right back to this, ten years from now, when you suddenly get more
definite information.

I am not suggesting that you should accept this James Blaine as yours from
the information that you now have, but let's face it.   It is better than
the last lead that you had, isn't it.

Point: This James Blaine has way too many coincidences to be just a
coincidence.   Remember, you do not have any "set in stone" facts about your
James Blaine Sr.     But, you believed that he had come from "Wheelis" OK.
You thought that he had been in Cimmaron Co., OK.   Well, this James Blaine
was from Cimarron Co., OK and in fact there were very few places he could
have been from in Cimarron Co., Ok between 1910 & 1917 when he signed up for
the draft, but "Wheeless" was in fact a town that was in Cimarron Co. at
that time.   At that time and in that place he most likely was actually
living near the fort (Fort Nichols) which was about 2 miles N. of where
Wheeless was located.   If he lived in the direction of Wheeless they most
likely would have said he was from Wheeless if any one asked as the town of
Wheeless was still in the memory or minds of the folks at the Fort.

POINT; You don't really know when you Grandfathers birth date was.   You
have said you believe it was around 1880, "give or take" and today you said
you thought it was "30 Jan', but agian you just think it might have been
then.

Let me tell you a true story.  My Grandfather who I was very close to and
loved dearly, died in 1986.     We had always celebrated his birthday on the
4th of Feb and we had always been told that he was born in 1896.    Two
years after his death when I started researching, I learned from Government
records that his actual birth date was Nov 24, 1895.    This was because
when Grandfather was 7 years old, his father had died a couple of years
previous to that and his mother had now re-married to a very harsh man and
about 6 months after she married this man, he gave all of her children from
her previous marriage a long stick with a sandwitch wrapped up in a
neckerchief and told them to hit the road and find them a new place to live,
he wasn't going to support them any longer.    Grandfather wandered for a
couple of days until a kind family finally took him in and raised him until
he was old enough to enlist in the Army for WWI.  He had not known at the
age of 7 when his birthday actually was (in those days and times, 7 year
olds did not know how to tell dates and times as all kids now do) and when
he was asked what his birthday was he had just made it up that he was born
on 04 Nov 1896.   That was his best guess as to when he was born.    He went
through his entire life not knowing what his real birthday was.   All of his
military records and drivers licenses reflected the date that he had made
up.   The point here is that you cannot take a date that someone tells you
as Gospel, until you have verified it with records.

So it is entirely possible that this James Blaine who was born in 1893,
could be your Grandfather.    A good researcher would pursue this lead until
he could no longer find anything to pursue.     At he very least you will
not have overlooked the obvious.

A lot of good researchers have been told (and it is mostly true) that there
may be a lot of people out there with similar names, so they eventually
assume that as fact.    And sometimes it is a fact, but it is not always a
fact.

Again, I would ask you how many James Blaine Rutledge's have you found in
your research?   Have all of them been from some place with a name like
Wheelis?    In Cimarron Co., OK?    Don't overlook this guy.   In the end,
he may turn out not to be the one you are looking for, but from what I can
see here is that he is your best bet at the moment, so I would pursue him to
the ends of the earth and TRY to prove that he was not the one.   Only then,
will you know.

I am seriously trying to help you with this.     I am not trying to show off
how much I knw about researching, I really want to help.    Didn't you tell
me once, that you were in Logistics?   Well, apply a little logic to this
situation, and see what you can come up with.

Wheeless, OK was a ghost town by 1865 when Kit Carson came to the area and
settled in what is now Fort Nichols, OK (2 miles N of the ghost town of
Wheeless).   This was a frontier area, very sparsely populated.    I would
seriously doubt that there were more than 1 James Blaine Rutledge's in that
area.

Think about this and then let me know what you think.   I may be totally
wrong here, but I would have to know a lot more to come to that conclusion.

If you do not want to be bothered about this any more, just let me know and
I will desist.

YOU'RE the one that keeps me running to the archives.  I've cut and
pasted the same information several times, and its ALWAYS you asking!  How
funny you are!  Here's a cut and paste from March 2003, btw, I think that
GrandDad's b'day was 30 Jan, and the James you've found was 24 Jan:

Actually, Ron,

If you go back through the threads, you'll see a history lesson
that we were all agape over, and now no one (even me) remembers it.
Keith told us how before 1907 (NOT 1997 lol) there was a different
"language" for things.  IN was not Indiana, but "Indina Territory". We
were discussing Oklamoma (LOL I can't speel -- ok, I'm so tired I'm
getting STUPID) OKLAHOMA , and the like.  I don't remember it all now, it
was in Feb 2001, there are only like 300 posts during that time (most
from me--just kidding), just follow my posts, and you'll hit it.

The only information on this James Blaine Rutledge is from the WWI
Draft
Registration list.    It did also list him as a white male & states
he
registered in Cimarron Co., OK, but his birth place was listed as
Okland,
IN.   I thought that this might be a mis-spelling of Oakland.   It
gives his
birth date as January 30, 1893.     This is all I have on him.
Perhaps you
should send off and ask for a copy of his military file.   These
files
usually contain a Pandora's box of information.   There is a fee for
copies
of the file, but it is usually worth a great deal more than the
fee.

Cimarron Co., OK is located in North Central OK, I believe that it
is North
of Stillwater (Payne Co.) and a couple of Counties West of Tulsa.
You
might also want to check for a Cimarron Co. Web site on Rootsweb and
write
to the Cimarron Co. List and request help on him, since he
apparently lived
in that Co. when he registered for the draft, he would have been
around 16
to 18 years old.

Ron,
Cut and pasted is a posting I made in Jan 2001.  See how you've
confused
me again?

Family,

My GrandFather, James Blaine was from ?? and was born ??.
I've
heard that we were from Il, Ok, In, and several other places.  I
found a
James in the SSDI who was born in 1885, and died in 1974 (Nov).
That
seemed about right to me, but the link to his city (Mclean Il) did
not
work.  I went to the WWI index, knowing that my GrandFather served
in WWI
just to see what I came up with.  I believe that my GrandFather
served
before WWI, got out, and returned to active duty volunteerily at
the
beginning of WWI.  I found in the WWI draft records one James
Blaine
Rutledge, born 30 Jan, 1893 in Okland City In--Cimarron county Ok.
(Since
when was Indiana in Oklahoma?)  (Oh yeah, MILITARY records, I
forgot!).
Well, it seems that I remember hearing Cimmaron county being
mentioned
too.  My GrandFather was quite old at death, but still this could
leave
him as old as being in his 70's or even 80's at death depending on
his
actual death date.  (I do not remember the date.  I was only about
10,
and had only seen him once while he was alive.)  How do I
reconcile this
data.  It seems that his birth date was in Jan, however the other
James
Rutledge was born 24 Jan--not much help there!  Goodnight all.
rick--the monky's uncle's nephew!

Yorick,

The reason that I believe that this James Blaine Rutledge was your
Grandfather was because he signed up for the draft in Cimaron Co., OK.
I
just checked my trusty book "Roadside History of OK" and found that there
was a ghost town named "Wheeless" was located approx. 2 miles South of the
Old Fort Nichols, which was on the Santa Fe Trail.

That would put him in Cimarron Co., Ok at about the time that he was
located
there.    There was only one ghost town with a name like "Wheelis" in OK.
If your Grandfather was in "Wheeless" OK area before the turn of the
century, this would almost have to be him.     This was a very very small
community, and I seriously doubt that there were 2 James Blaine Rutledge's
in the area at that time.      What do you think?

Yorick,

Do you know where James Blaine Rutledge lived?    I have a James Blaine
Rutledge in file, from the WWI Civilian Draft Regirstrations.   He was
b.
30
January 1893, in Okland City, IN and he registered for the draft in
Cimarron
Co., OK.    He would have been 17 or 18 when he registered for the
draft.
Could this be your Grandfather?

Yorick , with what Kermit sent on William Rutledge this morning, this would
be a great
break in your lineage, if we can just find some proof of James Blane
Rutledge's father.
All the paper trail is here except some proof of James Blaine Rutledge,
father.

I will try and work the census on the May family that might lead someplace.
I will start in Oklahoma census but let me know if you know where they lived
other than
Oklahoma,  it would make it easier to find them ,if you know they were
someplace other
than Oklahoma.,

Kermit in the Rutledge cemetery listings did they have a Johnson Rutledge
cemetery
record. I see something that makes me wonder about this as Johnson Rutledge
was
on 1870
of the census of Gibson County age 70 born North Carolina and a
Martha J. Rutledge age 26 listed with him
and Martha McKeen age 15  living with the family. this is on page 172 1870
Gibson County
census.
did Catherine and Johnson  Rutledge divorce??

Johnson Rutledge is on the 1850 Gibson County Indiana census
I will go and follow the census again thru and see  we found Catherine
on the
1860 census so who is the Johnson Rutledge on the 1870 census age 70 with the
young girl age 26 named Martha
this might explain the sister Dellie Rutledge on the Alfred G. Rutledge 1880
census.

Columbia Gibson County Indiana
1880 census Alfred G. Rutledge age 34 Indiana farmer parents Indiana
              wife Harriete     wire          age 24
                    Ephriam    son           age 15
Joseph W. son            age 14  all born in Indiana and
parents born in Ind.
                   Lucy B.    dau             age 12
                   Jesse        son            age  8
                   Clarence      son          age  6
Dellie   Rutledge                  age  5   (sister) born
in Indiana

If this is Alfreds sister she was born in 1875 Indiana
I think that maybe Catherine and Johnson Rutledge may have divorced and this
is
him in the 1870 census. If Dellie would have been child of Catherine she
would have been
a Wilson and Census shows she is a Rutledge.
Oh boy could search  at court house with this one. Gibson County Court would
possibly have a divorce record.

The 1870 census of Johnson Rutledge does not show how the Martha J. age 26 is
connected. just says keeping and says Martha McKeen age 15 living with family.
I will go and copy it and be sure I copied all the correct info.

OK, I'll bite this coupled w/ what Aunt Kattie stated.  If you work somewhat sideways, I'll be that you'll find that Blaine married Addie Black.  Blaine's Syster, Amelia, married Will, and named a child after Addie.  This would make Addie May have an Aunt Addie (Black) Rutledge.  With this in mind, the Black's and the Rutledge's, and the May's are now somewhat aquainted with each other, and I see that we have Katherine getting married to a Black.  The only problem that I see with this line up is that Aunt Kattie Black, born in 1908, was absolutely sure that Katherine May was a few years younger than her.  I figured that since she was in her school class that they were the same age, but she was sure that they were older.  I also had to remember that the schools in those days often had several grades all in one room.  Katherine May may have been small, and thus Kattie just THOUGHT that Katherine was younger...who knows for sure at this point.  I'll have to get some more firm d!
ata.  This is so much more than I've ever seen....thanks all.
(BTW, talked around the bush to Dad, seems Blaine used to get electro shock therapy.  Dad said he absolutely hated that (You think?).

William C. and Green Rutledge were on page 35 Roll 81

William Rutledge and Johnson Rutledge and Ezekiel Rutledge were on page
38 Roll 81.

This lookes to me like a family of the oldest Rutledge listed
which would be William Rutledge age 50/60

If anyone has any information to show how this family came from North
Carolina to
Gibson County Indiana, please post it could help Yorik.
Johnson Rutledge was the father of Alfred G. Rutledge.
Also there is a Rutledge Cemetery listed in Gibson County, does anyone have
cemetery
Records for the Rutledge Cemetery or know of anything of this family in
Gibson Co. Indiana.

CENSUS 1860:

something to think about

Here is the 1860 census for Gibson County Indiana

Johnson twp Gibson County

Catherine Wilson  female age 39 farmer born Illinois  1500  200
Ephriam Rutledge           age  17 farmer born Indiana  800  80
Alfred G. Rutledge          age   14  born Indiana
Catherine Wilson            age     4 born Indiana

The 1860 H.Q census did not list anything other than what I have listed here
did not say if they were her children on any of them.
Could be that the Catherine Wilson is the mother of all and had a second
marriage
and something happened between the time her 4 year old was born with her
being head of
household,
Now this calls for the 1850 census to see if they can be found
on it-- boy what an exciting hunt.

I found Alfred and His wife on the 1870 Johnson twp Gibson twp remember now
this
is 1870---
Alfred Rutledge farmer age 24 born Indiana parents Indiana
Mary---could she have had two names such as Mary Henrietta or vice versa,
age 24,
children Ephriam age 5 born Indiana parents Indiana-- this is not the Ephriam
on the
1860 census but  Ephriam age 5 could be named after that Ephriam on 1860
census.
Wilbe Rutledge age 4 if you go back to the 1880 census you find Joseph Wilber
so same family
in  1880 they just called him Wilbur on 1870 census
Lucy B. age 3 born Indiana parents born Indiana.

back to year of 1860---
If Catherine Wilson is not the mother of Alfred G. Rutledge on the 1860
census she could
be a sister-- and married to a Wilson.
reason
on the 1860 Johnson twp Gibson County  you will find
a Pricilla Rutledge age 60 born Indiana
                son George age 19
Benjamin Poe   age 16 this is a family name of POE born Indiana
Susan     Poe   age 14
Ellis Poe         age  12
Arthur Poe      age   10         all born in Indiana.

This Pricilla Rutledge could be the mother of Catherine, Ephriam, and Alfred,
and the
George listed in her household.

the 1850 census could clarify what is going on here in Johnson twp, Gibson
County.

Just checked the Johnson twp Gibson County Indiana 1840 census

Johnson Rutledge is listed as a houshold
with a son under 5 and his age 30 up, and females 1 under 5 and wife 20 up

I did not copy but evidently quite a few Rutledge brothers or relatives are
listed on the
1840 Johnson twp Gibson twp. census one was a Green Rutledge and the William
C. Rutledge
I think with a lot of searching a whole family line could be found in Johnson
twp Gibson co.
Indiana.
I did not go thru all of the Johnson twp Gibson Co. 1840 census.
If someone finds a county history on Johnson twp Gibson County may answer some
questions who the Johnson Rutledge of North Carolina family were.

these.  This line does seem to go back to William Rutledge of Stokes Co., NC to
Williamson Co., TN where he married Sarah Sims in 1809 and removed to Gibson Co.,
IN.

Has this been posted?  Memory fails me again.   It's late.   This is the 1930

To all Rutledge Researchers:

I have a Rutledge Family Bible dated 1833 in which many Rutledge names and
dates are recorded back to 1815. Since it was handed down from my ggGrandmother
Nellie Ann Rutledge, born 18 Feb 1858, it is safe to assume that there are
family ties to those other Rutledges mentioned. I quickly hit a brick wall with
her father Edward C. Rutledge. The family shows up in Shannondale, Montgomery
Co, Indiana in both the 1850 and 1860 census and in City directories found at
the Crawfordsville, Montgomery, IN, library. Who Edward C Rutlidge's father was
I cannot seem to determine.
Here is a complete list of names and dates (where available) from the family
Bible). Unfortunately, there were no trees to determine the links.
Marriages:
William E. Rutledge and Jinny m. 12 Jan 1815
Thomas E Rutledge and Attelia Peery(Peary,Pearie) m. 1820
George Rutledge and Peggy (Margaret) Murry m. 1821
Jane Rutledge and William Young m. 08 Dec 1824?
James Rutledge and Nancy Thompson m. 12 Feb 1827
John Rutledge and Nancy Fulton m. 19 Mar 1829
Robert F Rutledge and Lidia Thompson m. 27 Oct 1829
Polly Rutledge and James B Thompson m. 14 Feb 1832
Edward P Rutledge and Catherine G Ruddell m. 02 Feb 1841
Edward C Rutledge and Martha A m. 28 Sept 1844
Ellen M Rutledge and Serg Dobbs (Dabbs) m. 19 Oct 1848
Nellie Ann Rutledge and Robert Thomas Davis m. 12 Jan 1882

Nellie gave the Bible to her grandson Robert Stump who gave it to his cousin
Margaret Rutledge Davis Shearer, my mother who gave it to me. I would be glad
to share the many dates of birth and death recorded in the Bible but they are
too numerous to mention here.

Just found this
Two Johnson Rutledge families in Gibson County in 1850

Yoricks Johnson Rutledge  was in Johnson twp
Johnson Rutledge age 35 born Indiana                   INDIANA
Catherine (wife) age 30 born Illinois
Sarah G. dau age 13
Ephriam son age   8
William D. Rutledge age 11
Alfred G. Rutledge age 5

This Johnson Rutledge was in Columbia Twp. Gibson County 1850
probably a relative. He is the Johnson Rutledge on the 1870 census born North
Carolina.

Johnson Rutledge age 49 born North Carolina               NORTH CAROLINA
Margaret (wife)     age 47 born South Carolina
Eliza E.               age 19 born Indiana
Martha J.             age 19 born Indiana
Margaret E.         age  16 born Indiana
John B.               age  12 born Indiana
James McKiddey age   73 born South Carolina
Margaret McKiddey age 74 born South Carolina

The Johnson Rutledge on the 1850 census with Alfred G. Rutledge listed as a
son
must have died in 1853 and Catherine married James Wilson in 1854 as Kermit
has
posted. This 2nd Johnson Rutledge on 1870 census must be a relative possibly
a Uncle
or cousin.
Now back to who was Dillie Age 5 on the Alfred G. Rutledge census of 1880
saying she
was his sister?? is this another census mistake  could Dillie be a daughter
of Alfred G.
instead of sister??

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas holiday.  I'm
happy to say that one of my relatives has shown some
interest in my family tree research.  She doesn't know
what she getting into! Maybe I can interest her into
helping me with my Jones/Rutledge research.
One of my gifts this year was a CD of Sylvia, one of
my favorite country singers.  It's called, "Country
Legends."  While checking out a website, I found her
name listed as Sylvia Kirby Allen Rutledge Hutton.
Rutledge????
I'm wondering if anyone knows any Rutledge link to
her?  She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, in 1955.  My
relatives are also from Indiana.

Hi! I'm new to this list and I'll try to make it brief. My ggrandfather Wm.Henry Harrison RUTLEDGE was born 4 Feb 1855 in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. His father's name was Hiram RUTLEDGE a shingle maker who moved frequently. The census finds them in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan. I have nothing else on Hiram except that his wife's name was Ruth or Jane Waters and was born in Ohio. He's buried in Baroda Cemetery, in Berrien County, Michigan. Died 1886. Wm.H.H.RUTLEDGE, sometimes know as Henry, married 12 Aug 1877 in Berrien Co.,MI. to Mary Elizabeth Richards, had 5 children (Bertha, Mabel, Laura-my grandmother, Pearl, and Charles). He died in 29 June 1941 and is buried in Stevensville, Michigan. I'm interested mainly in tracing Hiram's parentage. As best I can figure out, he was born in Ohio, but with all the traveling, it's hard to find out where he was born exactly. If anyone can help out, I would be grateful. Died Before 1875.  Sarah married Lafayette Rogers on 2 Jan, 1858. In the state archives at  Montgomery AL I found the 1860 census records showing that Sarah had 2  children: James C. age 1 and John M. age one month.  She married Lafayette Rogers, son of ??? Rogers & Jane Rogers, 2 Jan 1858 in  Chattooga CO. GA , crt recd. Born 1839 in Alabama.  They had the following children:   16 i. James C Rogers  17 ii. John M. Rogers   6. William H. Rutledge. He had  been in the hospital for what was thought to be sugar diabetes.   According to the 1880 and 1890 census for Cherokee CO AL James and Hanna A.  McDonald had 6 children and in 1900 lived at Gaylesville AL. After Hanna  Died James Married her sister Mandy McDonald. James was called Jim. Milton  Married Lillie Broome on 23 March 1913 according to marriage records at  Chattooga CO. GA courthouse. Bell C Rutledge married a Baker and lived at  Lyerly GA while Milton and Zack move to Rome.  Osborn lived in Cherokee CO AL and took the son of Thomas Burton Rutledge,  Lonnie after Thomas and wife Etta Carroll both died.   According to Paul Tucker, of Lyerly GA, who was the son-n-law of Bell  Rutledge Baker, James A. Rutledge b. 1802, was sitting on the front porch  of their home in 1865 at just about dark. He saw a man walking up the road  and thought he recognized the manner in which he walked. James then  recognized the man as his son James b.1844, He ran from the porch to the  road jumped the fence and ran down the road to hug his son whom he believed  to be dead. NOTE from Kathye 2/14/99

This entry from the Missouri page of Don's "Most Wanted" is interesting and I have some further info on it and on the Arkansas cemetery entry. Who is searching for May Rutledge????

I have long had the information that May Rutledge Kiger died and was buried in Indiana. I don't know where in Indiana, but that's the family info that Grandpa Tom gave my mother.

Furthermore, I believe May's full name was Therresse May Rutledge. The reason for that is this -- a Therresse M. Kiger received land from Stephen Rutledge in Texas Co, MO. It was dated 6/21/1904 and recorded 12/31/1906, entry #10261 in the Deed Index book at the Texas County courthouse.

If anyone can get up there to look, it would be worthwhile. Stephen and Mary also gave/sold land to R.M. Kiger 1/29/1906, which was recorded 12/31/1906, entry #9547 in the Deed Index book.

Page; 706 and 707
Chapter: XIX Jefferson Twp. Henry Co. Indiana

"John Rutledge was born in Vermont in 1801 (Notice the census above says
Maryland), and in 1833 came to Indiana and settled on a farm in Monroe Twp.
Delaware Co. , adjoining Henry Co. where he reared a family of 13 children,
10 of whom are living (in 1884).

His wife was Hannah Williams, daughter of Abel and Rebecca (Hickman)
Williams. Mr. Williams (Abel Williams), was prominantly identified with the
early history of Indiana. He came from Ohio to Delaware Co. and entered 400
acres of land in Monroe Twp. He was prominant in agricultural as well as
political circles.

Mrs. Williams, (Rebecca (Hickman) Williams), was a southern lady and in
early life, turned her attention to the study of medicine, which she put to
practical use. She had an extensive practice with women and children.
She lived to be 75 years of age but in later life was a great sufferer on
account of the exposure she had undergone in riding over the country on
horseback.

Mrs. Rutledge, (Hannah (Williams) Rutledge), was born in Ohio in 1816 and
died in 1849.
Her children were as follows:
W.V., who began the practice of medicine at Mt. Summit Indiana about 1858
and afterward moved to Ohio. He enlisted in the 42nd Indiana Cav. and served
during the war.
He then went to Missouri and in 1868, located at St. Louis where he has an
extensive practice and is also a Professor in the American Medical College.

Rebecca, deceased, married Henry Shively of Henry Co.
Mary, is the wife of Ameziah Julian.
Sarah is the wife of William Irwin of Adams Co. Indiana.
Sarepta is the wife of Abraham Watson of Delaware Co. Indiana.
Alice is the wife of Robert Downs.
Samantha is the wife of William Downs.
Josinah, is deceased.

In 1852, Mr. Rutledge (John Rutledge), married Martha J., daughter of James
Dyms of Warren Co. Ohio.
They had 5 children:
John R., a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, residing in Rockford
Co. Indiana.
Elijah D.
James
Charlotte G. (deceased)
Margaret R., wife of Levi Bunner.
Mrs. Rutledge, (Martha J.) is a member of the Baptist Church and Mr.
Rutledge has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 60 years."

Below is some more info regarding the children of John Rutledge, their
spouses and families from the 1860 census. I went back and found this after
reading the above biographical sketch from the History of Henry Co.

W. V. Rutledge (William V.), son of John was living in Newton Co. Indiana in
1860.
Here is his info:

I didn't find anything on Rebecca who married Henry Shively. The book says
she was deceased by 1884. I can't find her on the 1860 census so perhaps she
was deceased by 1860.

Mary, daughter of John Rutledge was married to Amaziah Julian and living in
Henry Co. in 1860. Below is her info from the census.

Henry Co. 1860 Census

Post Office: Lewisville
Family #: 328

Mary
Age; 23
Born: Indiana

William
Age: 3
Born: IN

James
Age; 1 yr.
Born: IN

The rest of the children were still living at home in 1860. Margaret R. who
according to the book, was a daughter of John and Martha J. must have been
born after the 1860 census was taken, as she does not appear on it with
them.

I hope this info is helpful to you!
You mentioned ACKER'S in your family tree. Are any of them from Wells,
Franklin or Delaware Co's?

Good luck!

Warmest regards,
Linda

Hi Group,  I have a puzzle I'd like to solve.
  I have a William T. Rutledge/Ratledge b. 1814 DE - d. 1863-1870 in Butler
Co., MO or prob in Civil War. This William married possibly in Ohio to a
 Hannah b. 1824 OH. Their children born in Indiana : H.M. b. 1843, Susan T.
b.
 1845, James A. b. 1848, Barbara E. b. 1850, Martha b. 1853, George H. b.
1856
and an Albert b. 1863 in Butler Co., MO. This family appears on the 1860
Butler Co., MO census and Hannah is a widow with 3 younger children in
1870
census. There is a Military record for William.

Looking in Indiana I found there was a family of Moses Ratledge living in
Allen Co., IN 1840-1850 - sons William and Moses - then they moved to
Minnesota and died there. This Moses Sr. a son of Moses Ratledge 1 of Kent
Co., Delaware. So his son William is not the William of Butler Co., MO.

Somewhere in Indiana in 1850 there must be a William T. and Hannah
Rutledge/Ratledge family and also a marriage in either Ohio or Indiana for
them abt. 1842.  Does anyone know of this couple?   Thanks for any
 suggestions, help.

My gr-grandfather (Thomas E. Rutledge) had an older brother, John C. Rutledge b. July 28, 1818 married his third wife Pauline Epperson on Dec. 24, 1866. Any connection? Some of this is what I got from family as well as some from Rachel.

Emmons Rutledge, s/o Michael and Lydia has been one of my "brick walls". There have so many different stories about him. Linda Y Butler, archives Assistant to DepauW University has been so kind and sent me copies of Emmons Rutledge's obituaries from the Methodist Church Conference. Emmons was apparently a well thought of minister. The article gave his birth date as 2/Nov/1805 West Salem Twp, Mercer Co., PA.
