Jan, I was looking at the genealogy you sent (thanks a million) from your
friend and my distant cousin. The genealogy is titled," Descendants of Franklin
Perrin Rutledge." In it is a Dudley. Is that one of your Dudleys? If so we are
related.

Hi Betty,
No I have never lived in Danville.  I did find a picture from our Rutledge/Shaffer family that was labeled Danville.  It showed a large hole in the ground with several people that I have never been able to name.  The people are looking at probably gypsy children.

My brickwall is Levi Rutledge abt 1803 Md.-1874 Adams Co. IL and Elizabeth Bailey abt 1807 Pa-1884 Adams Co. IL.
 Children
Mary Ann Rutledge 1831 York Co. Pa - 1916 Gosper Co., Neb m. Benjamin Rutledge
  William Henry Rutledge 1834 Md - 1906  m. Susan E. Peden
Adam Rutledge 1836 Md - 1911 Adams Co IL  m. Ann E. Nichols
Margaret Celia Rutledge 1841 Md - 1911 Adams Co. IL m. Abraham Baker
Sarah E. Rutledge 1845 Md - 1881 Adams Co., IL m. William Rutledge
  Amanda J. Rutledge 1849 Md -  ?         m. Lewis Baker

My other Rutledge line is Benjamin Rutledge 1822 Md - 1905 Adams Co., IL son of William Rutledge 1797 Md - 1835 Haford Co., Md and Sarah Cooper.
William 1797 was the son of William Rutledge abt 1760 Md - 1816 Md and Margaret Ellett/Elliott.
and this ends this line for me.  Sure wish I could knock down these two brickwalls.

Betty I would love to know more about your first husband Thomas Smalley's line as I am researching my husband's line as well as mine.

Mary,  I was just reading your email to Stephanie.  I am sure  that your John
B. Rutledge must somehow be tied into my John W. Rutledge (b.  1838?
Illinois) (married Susan H. Lyons).  In my Rutledge/Smith line I have  a Hiram
Rutledge, a John B. Smith, a Rachel Smith (who was b. abt 1844,  Illinois) and
connections to Fountain co., Indiana,  Maryland and Brown  co., Ohio.  There may
have been other counties in Ohio that my  Rutledge/Smith line lived as well.
Some other surnames that connect to my  Rutledge line other than Smith are:
Huffman, Neth, Hays, Thomas, Liggett,  Parker, Washburn. These surnames were last
living in Vermilion co.,  Illinois.  Do any of them ring any  bells?

Is anyone else following a J. C. Rutledge line?   On a website  called "Pape
Mortuary" I found several children that were born to a John C.  and/or J.C.
Rutledge and all died very young.  These are the listings  that I found:

   Sinia M. Rutledge....b.4-28-1851.....d.8-1-1852
   Sarah E. Rutledge...b.7-29-1849.....d.11-3-1851
   Lucretia E. Rutledge...b.8-30-1853....d.10-10-1870
   Margaret M. Rutledge..b.9-28-1847...d.11-2-1851
These children's parents are listed as J.C. Rutledge and mother is  ,N.

   then there is:
   George W. Rutledge...b.5-9-1839...d.10-7-1855
His parents are J.C. Rutledge and ,E.

   Another one is:
   Benjamin Franklin Rutledge...b.2-7-1844...d.9-29-1845
His parents are John C. Rutledge and Elizabeth

Listing for a John C. Rutledge:
   b. 12-21-1807......d.10-29-1855
   His wife is Elizabeth.
These people are all buried in Rose Cemetery.
Pape Mortuary is located in Danville, Illinois.....so I suppose Rose
Cemetery is in Vermilion county.  Cheryl

History of Dewitt County, Illinois 1882: Unknown Co.

WILLIAM J RUTLEDGE.

MR. RUTLEDGE was born in White County, Illinois, June the 23d, 1816.
Thomas Rutledge, his father, was a native of Georgia, where he married
Miss Sarah Smith. Mr. Rutledge was of English and Irish descent. He was
a Ranger in the war of 1812, living in Kentucky at that time.
Immediately after the war closed, he came to Illinois, and located in
White county, where he lived until 1828 .. and then moved to what is now
McLean county, where he died two years later, at the age of 62. He left
a familiy of ten children and a wife, who survived him thirteen years.
The subject of our sketch was next to the youngest child. He was at an
age that be could just begin to make a hand when his father died. He
assisted his mother on the farm until be was 19 years of age, when be
was married to Miss Eliza Duffield, who died three years later leaving
two children; Martha J., now deceased, and John A., who is a farmer of
Rutledge township. Mr. Rutledge was again married January 17th, 1839, to
Miss Mary Vandeventer daughter of Jacob Vandeventer, one of the early
settlers of this section. She was born in Claybourn [sic] county,
Tennesee, June the 2d, 1822. She is German and English on the paternal
side, and Welch and Irish on the maternal. Mr. Rutledge has always
followed farming. He settled the place where he now lives in 1836, being
among the first to settle in the township, and when the county went into
township organization, the citizens honored him by giving the township
his name, he has nearly seven hundred acres of land in this vicinity,
fully half of which he entered from the government at $1.25 per acre. In
politics he is a Democrat. Such is a brief sketch of one of the most
respected old settlers of De Witt County.

Hope you bowled well. I haven't been able to bowl for the last 7 weeks
because of a pinched nerve. I'm hoping it gets better soon. Next Monday
is our last night, and I'm supposed to to to Tulsa, OK for the national
tournament in a month!

Rachel had more children for John & Susan in book 1, but I think book 2
is a correction of her first book., so I didn't copy them. Hope it
helps... Jan

met one day in Eugene for lunch.  It seems that Rachel had my Smith line

off to my bowling league right now, but will take any suggestions that anyone
is willing to give and answer all emails when I return.

Man Sarge.... I can't connect it!!!! I have a Anna Belle Ewing, a George
Rutledge, a Frank, son of George. My Anna Belle Ewing was born 1882 &
died 1907. I have no spouse for her.  But with naming patterns, it would
make sense if Anna Belle Ewing married Franklin Rutledge, a son of
George Rutledge, and then named his firstborn after his dad  & after his
wife!!!! Maybe we're on to something here..... Any other clues for me?
Mine were born in Westmoreland co. PA.

I have the same situation in my Rutledge line. My grandfather, Freeland
Douglas Rutledge got his name Freeland from his aunt's  husband Richard
Freeland, and his middle name came from his mother's maiden name.  A
great-great- uncle of mine was a Dr. Shallus Rutledge, and from what we
have figured out, he delivered a baby, and they named him Shallus
Beatty. Go figure, who would want either name, and I've never seen
anyone else with either of those names!!!!

My grandfather Rutledge wanted my parents to name their son after his
his side of the family, so my first brother was named Judson (after his
brother who died in WWI), my second brother had the middle name of
Douglas (for his mother's line) and yet he had a fit because he wanted a
child to carry on the Dudley name. My mom hated the idea, yet she gave
my 3rd brother Dudley as his middle name. My problem is this.... I have
never found any Dudley in our family!!! Douglas, yes, but never a Dudley!

My grandfather was so interested in genealogy, and passed his love on
to me, that I really think there must be a Dudley somewhere yet to be
found! Since I really haven't made the Rutledge connection yet, I guess
it's possible that I just haven't found my Dudley, whether he be a
Doright, or a Dowrong!!!

Have a great day!!!!  May a brick wall tumble for someone today!

we've ever experienced, and the heat is HORRIBLE!

Middle names can be misleading. My father's name was Kenneth Merrill Rutledge
and when I asked him about our Merrill side of the family he told me he was
named after the doctor who delivered him, Dr. Kenneth Merrill who was not kin
to us. He added that it was not uncommon for boys to be named after the family
doctor. My great grandfather was named Oren Hill Isham after his older
sister's husband Oren Hill.

Franklin was the fouth child. I think he was born in 1861 or there abouts.
He was born in Illinois. The children were Julie,  Wm., Agnes, Franklin,
Sarah J., and E. Charles. Charles owned a music store and sold pianos in
Indiana. I found a post card from my Uncle Charles written to his uncle
Edward Charles in Indiana, written from Stevensville, MI. I was so excited
when I found the card.  The 1850 census finds Hiram and Rutha Jane in Cass
Co. MI,  1860 in Livingston Co., Illinois and 1870 in Berrien Co, MI. Hiram
died in 1883 and is burried in Ruggles Cemetery in Berrien Co., MI. I
haven't been able to locate his wife's burial site. I haven't tried to track
down the rest of the children.  I have received several emails from Pat
Sproat who sends out the Illinois census reports on the Rutledge mailing
list. She has a lot of information and I'll send you anything that I find
out from her.  Mary

Here are some families connected with the Rutledges of Indiana and Appanoose and Tama Counties of Iowa.

Sorry, I didn't sign my email when I sent the Edward C. Rutledge  obit.  It's
just me, Cheryl, gr gr grand daughter of John W. Rutledge who  married Susan
H. Lyons.
I found the obit as I was researching some of my Smith line from Fountain
co. Indiana.  I had recently found out that they also had ties to  Montgomery
co. Indiana, so was just poking around and seen the two Rutledge  obits that I
have sent.  My Smith/Rutledge line ended up in Vermilion  county, Illinois,
Appanoose county, Iowa and Tama county, Iowa.    Other surnames connected to my
line that I know of other than Smith, Rutledge  and Lyons are:
Searl
Baker
Watts
Huffman
Neth
Pulber
Snyder
and somehow, Blackford, but I'm not sure how just yet.
I'm glad that someone found one of the obits  useful.      Cheryl in snowy
Oregon

Hello Cousins,

I have been quite busy and not really keeping up with the list and noticed some talk about the Augusta Co. VA line a week or so ago.. this is my line (Via the full line of Georges to Willam Newton)

Also note that several of them were ministers and moved about Illinois quite a bit once they got there.

I have a fairly decent database of them if anyone needs it.  Augusta Co has a very good on-line record of historic documents...  https://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/augusta2.html

Oh.... and if anyone has happened to find the elusive link between Edward Sr of VA and Dr. John while my head was busy with other things, send me a line?  (yah I know... but it is still worth trying )

Below is part of an email that someone sent  me.  I am trying to find out if
this John Cotral had a brother named John  W. Rutledge who married Susan H.
Lyons.  Does anyone know? Thanks,  Cheryl

My line is Abraham W. Rutledge, 1786,  Maryland;
 Fletcher L. Rutledge, 1816, KY (brother of John  Cotral);
Abraham Wheeler Rutledge 1837, Vermilion, IL;
Wm. Franklin "Frank" Rutledge, 1892, Burlington,  Coffey, KS; Pierre Leroy
Rutledge, 1919, Collinsville, Tulsa, OK (my  father).

Hi Carol,
It is good to hear from you.  Does this information of Keziah Rutledge being
the daughter of Michael Rutledge fit with your information.?  I have an
earlier Keziah, daughter of John Rutledge & Jane, who married 03 November
1761 John Parks.

Which Michael Rutledge is the father of Keziah Rutledge Beeman?
It is always nice to know there are other researchers out there interested
in Maryland Rutledges.

I second the 'Thanks', Donna!  Pat is a 'walking encyclopedia' on
Rutledges!
She's given me some great leads.  As it turns out Keziah Rutledge Beeman
 is
my 3rd gr grmo's sister -- it's great to make a connection, finally, with
 at
least one other person from that generation!  "Maryland" always gets my

I happened across this and has a Middleton family listed with a Rutledge
nephew
1880 Prect 1, Mason Co. Texas

William Middleton age 61 Farmer  born Illinois  father SC Mother  SC
Susan A. (wife)    age   64             born  Ky       father NC Mother NC
Sarah Parson step dau age 37 born Texas        father Ireland Mother NC
Sarah Parson   dau age   8 born  Kansas    father born Ala mother born Texas
Louise Parson dau   age  6 born  Texas      father born Ala  mother born
Texas
E. Alaie Parson dau age 2 born Texas        father born Ala  mother born Texas
William Rutledge Nephew age 18 born Illinois Works on  Farm father born
Illinois mother Ark.

This Middleton family seems to have generated  in South Carolina to Illinois,
Sarah could be a daughter of wife Susan A.  which would make Susan A. married
before she married Middleton, Now to  figure out where William fits in as a
nephew
on which side of house.   Interesting.

I have been a long time and lately a silent (almost) member of this list.
My elusive ancestor Fountain Rutledge (b 1796 KY) is still a big brick wall.
The connection of the Rutledge and Gamble family to Ann Mayes Rutledge
caught my eye(as it may have years and years ago and I did not have the
sense or maturity to follow the lead!) As long as my Rutledge grandmother
was living she claimed we were related (cousins) to Ann Rutledge... and if
you had ever met my grandmother, you would have known better than to
question anything she said!!  I have no idea how far back the story about
being "cousins" began, or how many "removed" figure into the equation.

In reviewing all of my records concerning Fountain Rutledge, I now find the
same Gamble families living near him in KY, IN and then in MO.  Fountain
lived in Scott Co., and Jessamine Co KY before moving to Hendricks Co IN in
1837. There are Gambles in neighboring Bourbon and Harrison Co KY and this
family are then enumerated next to Fountain Rutledge in 1850 and also in
1840 Hendricks Co IN (that census is alphabetical so neighbors are not
obvious.) Josiah Gamble (b 1777 VA) purchased land in Hendricks Co IN and
moved his family there ca 1830 from Bourbon Co., KY... Fountain purchased
land in Hendricks Co IN 1837... coincidence or family following
family....cousins???

We know that sons of George and Nellie (Gamble) Rutledge came to America -
now it stands to reason that brothers of Nellie Gamble also immigrated and
may have also intermarried with the Rutledge before leaving Ireland.  All I
have to do now is prove it!!

Any info anyone might have on Nellie Gamble would be welcome and
appreciated...

Subject: Rutledge Brick Wall

I have been casually researching Edward Crockett Rutledge, born in Virginia (Blacksburg area) ca 1817, eventually settled in Montgomery County Indiana (Shannondale) between 1840 and 1850, had a son William, born in Missouri. I have been unable to link ECR to his parents in Blacksburg nor have I been able to determine exactly when he left Virginia, how he managed to be in Missouri, and when he arrived in Indiana. Family records show a William as father but no documentation.
Do you have any information on this particular Rutledge?
By the way, there appears to be an Edward P. Rutledge, also from Virginia who settled just down the road in Indiana (Boone County) about the same time. EPR is burried across the county line in Shannondale, Montgomery County, IN.

John Rutledge     35 b. VA
Josiah Rutledge    28 b. VA
Richard Rutledge  44 b. VA
Robert Rutledge   42 b. VA
William Rutledge   24 b. VA

The entire male siblings of one family.  The only males I have not found any
other information
are Fielding and William.
Josiah is Father of Menter Pinkley, My Grandfather.
I still need supporting information.

Hello list, Does anyone know who this Lorenzo Rutledge in Coles County,  IL
is?  Our Lorenzo Dow Rutledge b.1813 in VA, (rumored to be of the  Jackson
Middleton Rutledge line) got married and had kids with Mary Polly  Molsby in TN
and most likely moved to IL after the 1860 TN census.  He and  Polly are
missing.  Most of his kids show up in Southern IL   then on to MO and Ark and even TX
for a while for some.  Polly died in  1865.  We know Lorenzo didn't die until
1875 (we have no graves  for either), so this 1874 marriage in Coles County,
IL could be our  Lorenzo.  Does anyone else claim this Lorenzo Rutledge or
have any new info  on his kids with Polly?-BarbK

One thing that I don't understand is that Rachel says that the marriage book
showed that Abner Smith was the son of James Smith.  I sent off to the
Vermilion county genealogical society and got the marriage record for Abner E. Smith
and Nancy Jane Rutledge.  The date of Oct. 19, 1894 is correct, but Abner
listed his father as John B. Smith and Susan Liggett.   I found a John B. Smith
and a Susan Liggett in Fountain co., Indiana in 1860 with a son Abner age 19,
and later found them again in Vermilion co., Illinois without Abner in the home.
These are two of the places that I know my Smith/Rutledge line lived.  So I
think maybe there is a typo on the name of James Smith and it should be John
B. Smith.  On the 1900 census for Sharon twp, Appanoose co., Iowa...you will
see that John, Ray, Bert and May are not the only children that Nancy Jane
Rutledge claims.  I am so dog gone mad that there are no 1890 censuses.
I knew the Ted (his name was Theodore) Rutledge and Esther Grong that Rachel
has listed.  They lived next door to me for years when I was growing up, but I
never knew they were related.  Their daughter in law, Pat Rutledge recently
passed away.
I would be very curious to see what children Rachel has listed for John and
Susan in book one.  Thanks for sending me this info as some of it is new to me.

Don,

I am researching the Sagaser family and came across a comment on your (?) website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~donkelly/rutstates/illinois.htm but I cannot figure out which person is the source of the comment.  The comment is:

I have the Bible of Robert Vandeventer Reuben Rutledge as passed down to My GGrand Mother Malissa Rutledge Dickerson. I also have Malissa's mother Margaret J. (Cayton) Rutledge, Sagaser Last Will and Testament. I also haave an assortment of pictures of Rutledges, Dickerson's Caytons, Karr's and other's. Dates in the order of 1850 to 1900.

It is located toward the bottom of the site.  Do you have any clue who the author is, or whom I might contact to get a copy of this Last Will and Testament?

Thanks for any advice,

his early death his wife married James McPherson and went on to have more
children. James and Rebecca had three children that I can find. (1) Martin Van
Buren b 9/16/1838 in Illinois and died 4/14/1858 in Illinois. (2) Edward
Rutledge Washington b 1/28/1840 in Scott County, Ill. and died 4/17/1914 in Scott
County, Ill. He married Minerva Ann Day 3/7/1861 in Soctt County, Ill.  (3) Sarah
Cain Rutledge b 4/29/1843 and died 10/31/1843 in Illinois. She is buried in
Bowers Cemetery.
)

James also had a brother named John. The information on his birth/death  has
not been confirmed by me, but I show 12/2/1811 in Dickson County, Tn.  He died
9/19/1890 in Allen County, Ks. He married Mary Gunn on 3/3/1836 in Morgan
County, Ill. She was the sister of the above Rebecca Gunn. Borthers married
sisters within a year of each other.

I have not been able to locate any other information on my James and would
love to locate his siblings or parents are confirmation of John's or his parents
birthplaces.

If anyone feels they have a connection or can make some suggestions, I would
greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much!

but they have had the same problem, the ball stops with them. Hope someone can
connect or advise. Thanks so much, Terrie Cooper-Piper, Bakersfield, Ca

Good Morning All,
Thank you Pat.
You may have helped shatter a wall.

The following story was told to me by Earl D. Rutledge on August 31, 1965.

Per Menter Pinkley Rutledge (Earl's Grandfather) was born on a farm near
Bushnell Ill, Sept 24 1869.  He was the son of Josiah Rutledge and Christina
Mullneaux.

Josaoh had five brothers, and was brought to Illinois when he was six years
old.  He left two bachlor uncles back in West Virginia.

When P.M.P. (commonly call M.P.) was about 5 years old, the Bushnell farm
was sold and the receipts deposited in the bank which soon failed.. The
proceeds from the sale of the farm being thus lost, the Rutledge family
visited relatives in Iowa, and finally movedto Missouri where they bought
160 acre farm from the railroad for about $5.00an acre.  This farm was
located between Nettleton and Hamilton.

September 15, 1965

M.P married Aura Etta Dewolfe 8-27-1902 at nettelton MO.

M.P. is my grandfather.

More fill if there is interest.

Good morning,

This is another longshot.  Saw your post at IGW and IRELAND lists.  I
have Rutledges, but have not had much luck researching that line, or
finding living cousins.  Maybe you could help ???

This is my RUTLEDGE line in a nutshell . . .

*** James Mayes RUTLEDGE, born 20 Aug 1800, GA, married Sarah Brim
Richardson SMITH, on 2 Sep 1820.  She was born 20 Dec 1795, SC
*** Their daughter, my line, Eliza (Elizabeth) Ann RUTLEDGE, born 7 Mar
1839, IL (or OH ?), died 17 Oct 1920, (ID ?).  I have a picture of her,
the only picture of my RUTLEDGEs.  Would like to find more pictures of
RUTLEDGEs.  She married 28 Jun 1857, Josiah Thomas ELLIOTT (another
deadend line).
*** Their daughter, my line, Sarah Belle ELLIOTT . . . .

That is all that I have for my RUTLEDGEs, except we know that two of our
RUTLEDGE ancestors signed the Declaration of Independance, and the
United States Constitution, I believe James and Edward RUTLEDGE ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Donna and Ron and all,

Now you have my attention.  Dang!  I was going to try to ignore the Farmer
referenced in the web page story, though I did see it.  One of my Old (now
deceased) Aunties used to talk about a Grandma Farmer.  I was just a little
girl and had no idea who she was talking about as I had no Grandma Farmer
that I knew of.  I didn't know at the time that everyone had their own set of
Grandparents, I was too young.  Everyone older also spoke of their spouses
Grandparents as their own as well.

My Great Grandfather was James Carter Rutledge and I believe his father was
James, but havn't proven it.  Is Grandma Farmer my key?

 Donna,
No I just went and read the story and the first thing that stuck out to me
was the occurrence of the names Farmer & Rutledge.   I keep running into
those two names mentioned together ( and, or, married to each other).   I
haven't found the time as yet, to check them through my data base, but will
try to get to that soon.    So many kinfolk......so little time.
.........and unfortunately........so little memory left to work with.
Age is no friend of mine!

 Donna,
That was a fascinating story.    It has always intrigued me, that I seem to
almost always find Farmer Families in connection with Rutledge Families.
I have two Grt. Aunt's  (sisters) who married Farmer's (brothers) and as I
blindly stumble down the research trail, when I find a Rutledge Family, there
often appears a Farmer lurking nearby.

Hamilton County, Illinois:

Hi,

I had mentioned that I have little color; It is not yet resolved but, I had
been talking to my Brother about a Jiles, or Giles Coon<< phen?
And so working Monitor or not, I had to reply.

The Jiles or Giles Family took in My Dad, work for food and board in Ashley,
MI while my Dad put himself though High School.
Well, My Brother says that Jiles Family was relation, not just a friend and I
know, I spent some summers there as a kid, breaking eggs and getting in
trouble.
Mr. Jiles, or Giles (soft G) was a Farmer, He had a huge farm, there in
Ashley.

Not to add confusion, but perhaps There is a Rutledge connection there, too.
I am trying the hard way for a few weeks to find out, I am barely using this,
it kills my eyes!

Illinois

On the 1880 census of Columbia twp Gibson County Indiana

Alford G. Rutledge (notice the spelling Alford is also ment for Alfred just
ignorance of
census taker in spelling which all researchers know about)

here is the take on census
Alford G. Rutledge   age 34   Farmer born Indiana parents born Indiana
Harriet         (wife)           age 24 Keeping house  born Indiana  parents
born Indiana
Ephrium Rutledge son    age  b. Ind. 15  Works on farm born Indiana  parents
born Indiana
Joseph W. Rutledge son age 14 b. Ind.  works on farm born Indiana  parents
born Indiana
Lucy B. Rutledge daughter age  at home born Indiana parents born Indiana
Jesse Rutledge son age 8 born Ind parents born  Indiana
Clarence Rutledge son age 6 born Ind. parents born  Indiana
Dellie Rutledge sister age 5 born Indiana
Alice Lister Other age 16 Domestic Servant born INdiana parents born Indiana
Gavinn Hill other  born Ky Farm Laborer born Ky parents born Ky

Now that I know where they were in Indiana maybe can find Alfred as a child
on the 1860
Census.
I will try and find them on the 1870 and may have parents of Alfred on the
1870 census.
the picture of this family is getting larger all the time.

This has to be the same Alfred G. Rutledge in Oklahoma dates are same and
same names for Alfred G. and Harriet.

Tell you a story about the Arthur and Alfred names, have a friend who her
father swore
his fathers name was Bob-- and they called him Bob all his life but when we
got his
records his name was Joseph. Her father never knew his dad was a Joseph
instead of Bob.
figure that one.

I checked Rachel Clemon's book on the Rutledge's and found this info. I
thought
that perhaps the Musson might have been Mason? I know that Oquawka, IL isn't
far
from where my Rutledge's lived, but I have found no connection. Let me know if
this might be your line. Jan

Thanks for that information, Jan, but I don't think it gets me any closer. I
discovered a large hunk of Rachel Clemon's genealogy on the Internet while
doing a search for my grandfather William Mason Danner. I believe she
misidentified him as "William E. Danner," rather than William M. Danner."
I've seen initials changed like that when one is trying to read notes perhaps
scribbled while looking at a microfilm reader. I tried to contact Ms. Clemon,
only to be informed that she has died. I was directed to this Rutledge group.
I can say with certainty that William Danner married Lois Elizabeth Rutledge
(1863-1943), the daughter of James Edward Rutledge (1834-1917) of Virginia,
who in turn was the son of Elijah Rutledge.

For the record I add below my grandmother's obituary as it appeard in the New
York Times in 1943. They misspelled her first name. William Mason Danner, Jr.
was my father.

Peter Danner

[From the New York Times 1943]
Montclair, N,J., Sept. 27—Mrs. Louis [Lois] Rutledge Danner, long active in
welfare work for lepers in association with her husband William Mason Danner,
former general secretary of the American Mission to Lepers, died Saturday of
a heart ailment at her home, 56 South Park St. Mrs. Danner, who was 80, was
first treasurer of the National Y.W.C.A. in 1888.
A descendant of Edward Rutledge, signer of the Declaration of Independence,
Mrs. Danner was born in Oquawka, Ill., and was a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan
College at Mount Pleasant. After her marriage, she lived for a time at
Louisville, Ky., where Mr. Danner was general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. She
had lived here since 1918.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Danner leaves two songs, Paul Rutledge Danner, who,
as manager of the Manila office of the Asia Life Insurance Company, has been
interned with his family since the Japanese attacked the Philippines; Dr.
William Mason Danner Jr., an instructor at Santa Barbara (Calif.) College,
and a daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Stender of Montclair.

Hi Tina,  I hope I can tell you this straight...My husband Jack's
grandparents were Robert and Mae Rutledge Kiger, she being the daughter
of Stephen and Mary Massey Rutledge.  Robert and Mae's daughter Helen
Maxine married Jack's father Harlan Pollitt.  On the other side,Harlan's
sister Jessie married Grover Mullins who was son of Caleb and Bell
Watson Mullins.  There were 8 children of Caleb and Bell.  Bell was the
daughter and 2nd child of Zachariah and Nancy Ann Rutledge
Watson,daughter of Abraham Rutledge.
According to my info which I received just last week from Jack's cousin
who obtained it from the Rutledge reunion in Danville,Il. Abraham
Rutledge,1786-1840 was born in South Carolina and after spending on year
in N.C. moved to KY in 1798.  He remained in Kentucky,a prosperous
farmer until 1834,he moved his family together with his brother John
Rutldege and sisters, Ruth and Mary Rutledge and came to Vermilion Co.
Il  He married twice, his first wife bing Mary Huffman, and his second
wife Barabara Deck.  He had  11 Children survive him He is burried in
1840  in the cemetary on Hazel St. Danville,Il.
So you see, we are related to Rutledges on both sides.
Hope this helps!! It was just funny that we received this just a few
days ago.  It is the Michael - Rutledge family.

like to know of the other Rutledges around that are related and the

I found this in the book called: Portrait & Biographical Album of McLean County, Ill., pub. by Chapman Brothers, 1887:

pp. 426-7:

John T. Rutledge, a prominent farmer of Empire Township, owns and occupies a fine homestead on section 11, township 21.  He is a native of his township, and was born Nov. 13, 1833.  His father, James Rutledge, was born in Kentucky, and his grandfather, Robert Rutledge, in South Carolina.  The latter removed to Kentucky at an early period in its settlement, and in 1820 proceeded north to Illinois, settling first in White County, whence he removed to that part of Tazewell now in McLean, and located in Randolph Grove.  With his brother Thomas he made a claim, a part of which he improved and occupied a year or two, and them made another claim on Sections 33 and 34, on what afterward became Empire Township.  There he erected two log cabins, one for himself and one for his mother.  At the time of his marriage he settled on his claim and commenced housekeeping.  There was no sawed lumber used in the construction of this cabin, the floor being made of puncheon and the roof of clapbo!
ards made with the draw-shave, and in this humble abode our subject was born and the father lived until his death, which occurred Dec. 15, 1863.  The nearest markets at that early day were Peoria and Chicago, which were also the depots for supplies, and it took about eleven days to make the round trip to Chicago.  In 1845 the father of our subject took a load of wheat to Chicago, and on his return brought back a load of lumber, with which he finished the frame house in which he spent the last years of his life.  He, however, built a brick addition to the house some years before his death.  He was successful in his agricultural and business operations, and at the time of his death owned over 500 acres of land.  He was married, in McLean County, Ill., to Miss Prudie Vandeventer, who was born in Tennessee and was the daughter of John Vandeventer, an early pioneer of this country.  Mrs. Prudie Rutledge died at the home of her daughter, Melinda Sageser, at LeRoy, on the 27th of N!
ovember, 1881.

John T. Rutledge was the eldest child of his parents.  He attended school in the pioneer log cabin with puncheon floor and benches, and chimney of dirt and sticks, built up on the outside.  The fireplace occupied nearly the entire end of the cabin, and light was admitted through a square hole in the logs and covered with greased paper.  he finished his education, however, in a frame school-house, the erection of which was considered quite an event.  Our subject assisted his parents on the farm, and remained under the home roof until his marriage.  He then cultivated a part of the old homestead for two years, whence he removed to the farm which he now owns and occupies on section 11.  At the time of taking possession of this, it was wild prairie, with the sod yet unturned.  He labored industriously for its improvement and cultivation, and now has a fine estate with a good brick house, frame barn and all other necessary and convenient out-buildings.

The marriage of our subject with Miss Sarah Gilmore was celebrated on the 15th of February, 1855.  Mrs. Rutledge was born in Harrison County, Ohio, and was the daughter of William and Phoebe (West) Gilmore.  Her father was a native also of Harrison County, Ohio, where he was reared to farming pursuits.  In 1850 he emigrated to McLean County, Ill., first settling in Downs Township, whence he removed to Empire Township and purchased land on section 10.  Both he and his wife are still living and are now residents of West Township.  Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge became the parents of twelve children, seven now living, the record of whom is as follows: Flora Belle married George W. Wilson and lives in Empire Township; Cyntha, Prudie, Maggie, Presley, Bertha and Joseph are at home with their parents; Belle, Cyntha, Prudie and Maggie are highly educated and are all teachers.  Cyntha will graduate from the State Normal this season; two died in infancy; James William when six weeks old; Mary!
, the third child, was born July 1, 1860 and died March 7, 1881; Lelia, the tenth child was born Jan 19, 1875 and died July 30, 1881.  Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and our subject politically is an uncompromising Prohibitionist.

Hope this will help someone.

Be well & God bless,
Kate Beaugrand Cook

Rooters - Cousin from St. Louis area traveled up to the Union Army Prison in Alton, IL to search for the gravestone of Little Berry Rutledge, and found it. Here is his message. Richard Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 14:26:51 EDT Subject: Medic site - Scurvy - Alton IL Prison Whatever Littleberry died of, we finally made contact with him. After an Easter egg hunt that took us to North St. Louis, we made the pilgrimage across the river and found the Confederate Prison and Cemetery (two separate locations) in Alton, IL. Took a pencil rubbing of his name and unit on the base of the monument and few pictures of our two generations. There's not much left of the prison, but it has a few pages of information on a nearby kiosk. (Interesting that it was the last Illinois state prison closed (in 1860), for the overall poor facilities and lack of hygiene -- and then was used to house prisoners. Guess that tells you about the hierarchy of things.) I'll try to scan the items and get them out. I realize that there are other things people have sent to work on (including items to scan for cousin Neil) -- things have been pretty hectic lately. All our best, Steve Dalzell and the rest of our branch

Edna and whomever is interested.:

Little Berry Rutledge was born 1842 in Forsyth Co., GA, son of Joseph
and Melissa Ann McCay Rutledge, grandson of Littleberry and Nancy Farmer
Rutledge,
gr grandson of Joseph and Mary Paschall Rutledge, all desc. of "James of

Was in Confederate Cherokee unit from AL.
Believe he died from complications of wounds and scurvy after being
captured by Union Army.

This has a bit of deja vu quality to it.  The RUTLEDGE family I am tracing is
from SC and moved to Jackson Co., TN where 4 RUTLEDGE siblings married 4 GAW
siblings.  The GAW family was also from Greenville Co., SC.

You say this Leander may be from an Andrew RUTLEDGE of SC to Vermillion Co.,
IL.  It just so happens that my Thomas GAW's younger brother moved with his
mother and step-father John and Violet CALHOUN from SC to Dearborn Co., IN,
to Parke Co., IN, to Vermillion Co., IN and some of their children ended up
in Vermillion Co., IL.

What a small world!  I wonder if this Andrew RUTLEDGE traveled with the
CALHOUN family?

I recently received from aunt who is 80 a number of family group sheets for the following Franklin Rutledge and Malinda Agnes Humphreys, John Rutledge and Margaret Williams, William Richard Rutledge and Elizabeth Williams, James Enos Rutledge and Eleanor Ralston, Edward Rutledge and Sarah Armstrong, Thomas Rutledge and Jean Armstrong, George Rutledge and Nelly Gamble, Edward Thomas Rutledge and Elizabeth Graem, John Rutledge, George Rutledge, and Cavan Rutledge, Places are Scotland, Ireland, Augusta Co. Va., Christchurch, S.C., Sullivan Co. Tn., White Co., Tn.,Washington Co., Tn., Montgomery Co. Tn., Spencer Co., Ind., Flagg Springs, Va., Table Grove, Ill, Fulton Co., Ill, and McDonough Co., Ill.

I asked her where she got them and she couldn't remember all of where she got them. I think a lot of it was when my Mother was living her and my Aunt made a trip east for family information, also he cousin Clifford Wilson who lives in McDonough Co., Ill. is a devout Morman so a lot probably came from the LDS church, and lastly my Grandmother had a very sharp mind and was a big letter writer and very inquizitive, she died at the young age of 99 years 10 months. I was born and raised in McDonough County and also spent time in Fulton County it is all very rich farm land. Also I notice the Rutledge's belived in large familys. So I can understand how they populated the United States far and wide. So to all who are sick or going for an operation remember Rutledges' live a long and proporus life. Regards; Jack

Re: marriages in McDonough Co. IL 1855-1880  . Listed by Jack Heine.
Jack,
The Derius Rutledge you listed as having married Miss Susan C. Leppo 7-2-1871
is my great-grandfather and she my great-grandmother.  Susan was actually
Mrs. Leppo.  What happened to Mr. Leppo we don't know and would like to hear
from anyone who does.  Susan's maiden name was Johnson.  She had a brother,
name not known, who had a son born about 1876 named Arthur Johnson.  We would
like very much to hear from any descendants of Arthur or other siblings of
Susan if they should read this note.  Derius' father was John Henry Rutledge
of TN and his mother was Mary Reneau.  We would like to hear from any
descendants of J.H. Rutledge, too.  Susan had a son named Wallace Leppo who
is listed as "stepson" to Derius Rutledge on the  1880 IL census. We would
like to hear from any cousins on this line, also
Thanks Jack.

Benjamin and Mary Ann (Rutledge) Rutledge, came West and arrived at
Quincy April 19, 1855. They soon afterward settled on a farm South of
Columbus and in Gilmer Township. Benjamin Rutledge acquired 255 acres in
that locality and one his pioneer experiences was hauling corn sixteen miles
to a distillery near Quincy and then selling it for 12 1/2 cents a bushel. He
built a comfortable home and a good barn. The home burned but in 1877 the
barn was still standing. Benjamin spent the last six years of his life in
Columbus. He died at Columbus, Sept. 4, 1905 at the age of eighty-four. His
widow survived him until Oct. 1916 and died at the age of eighty six.
In Maryland Benjamin Rutledge had operated a paper mill in company with
his wife's father. The latter was a millwright by trade. Their establishment
was twenty-six miles north of Baltimore. Benjamin's father-in-law, Levi
Rutledge, also came to Illinois and bought land adjoining that of his son and
daughter, and died there at the age of seventy.
Children of Mary Rutledge and Benjamin Rutledge are:
8 i. William Levi3 Rutledge, born 23/Jul/1847 in East & 2nd Ward,
Balt. Co., MD; died 01/Apr/1928 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL. He married
Marietta Wiseman 28/Feb/1867 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL.

served nine years as road commissioner and was treasurer of the boards all
that time, he served two years as township clerk and was elected and
re-elected assessors for 18 years ; he was a democrat, was identified with
the Christian Church at Columbus for 40 years.

William Levi Rutledge was a boy of eight when his parents came to
Illinois. He grew up on his father's farm and besides his training in the
local schools was well fitted for the tasks of a practical agriculturist. He
was only 19 when he married Miss Mary Etta Wiseman. Mrs. Rutledge was born
near Taylor in Marion Co., MO,

After his marriage William Levi lived on year on the home farm, then
spent seven years in Burton Township. In 1877 he bought 160 acres for $52.00
per acre. At the beginning of his married life he was heavily in debt, and
paid 10 per cent interest. Most people of later generations would have not
believed it possible to raise hogs which sold at 2 1/2 cents a pound and corn
at 16 cents a bushel. However William Levi was a good manager and did
eventually make the farm pay for itself. He and his brother bought land
together but William Levi soon bought out his brother. Mr. Rutledge marketed
between 150 and 200 hogs per year, and frequently turned out a carload of
cattle.

His wife, Mary Etta, died June 11, 1905 after they had been married
nearly forty years.

Carol or Donavon,
In an e-mail to the list on sat, 28 Aug 1999, I found three names among
the Finney information that caught my eye.  I think they are part of the
Rutledges in Adams Co. that I am trying to find their place in the right
Rutledge family.

"Charles Edward Rutledge 1861-1943 & wife Eva"
Did he have a hotel in Quincy, Adams Co. IL in 1905?
How far back do you have on his line?
Do you have info. on his children to share?

"Nina G. Rutledge 1890-1905"
I have her buried in Woodland Cemetery, Quincy, Adams Co. IL
Did she have brothers & sisters?
Would enjoy seeing any information on this branch of Rutledges.
Thanks in advance.
Donna in cool, dry OR ( It is great)

I am leaving it punctuated as it was because there is a confusing statement and I don't know to which end of the sentence it belongs- aarrrrgggggghhhhh. My ancestor, R.S. McIntyre, married Sarah RUTLEDGE. Date unknown,
place unknown, but I can make a few educated guesses.

Their daughter, Jessie, was born in 1868. She married on September
11, 1888 in McLean County, Illinois to Pearle D. Chesher. Pearled
died in McLean County.

I know that McLean County Illinois was crawling with RUTLEDGE.  I
downloaded a gedcom today which has a Sarah E.  RUTLEDGE as a
daughter born December 1852 in McLean County to Thomas Officer
RUTLEDGE and Sarah Mayes RUTLEDGE.

Does anyone know more about this Sarah??  Who she married, when
and where she died, etc.  I have found four of her siblings in the
Oak Grove Cemetery in McLean County. Maybe this Sarah is buried
there under a married name?? Does anyone have plot owner names
with listing of interments in the plot that may be able to look up
Thomas Officer RUTLEDGE's plot and see if a Sarah is buried there?
Does anyone have the census for Thomas Officer RUTLEDGE household
for 1860?

We can also consider the possibility that Sarah ____ married a
RUTLEDGE who died and Sarah was a widow RUTLEDGE who married R.S.
McIntyre.

Help greatly appreciated!   Jeanne Johnson

Margaret Jane Rutledge married Benjamin Franklin Smith Dec. 15, 1853 in McDonough Co., IL.

Robert McKinley Rutledge married February 23, 1879, in Fulton Co., IL, to Rachel Ann Yocum, she was b. 1858, d. 1934.

Since all of the above Rutledges were living in the Fulton Co. and McDonough Co., IL. area, could they be related?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Jane.

Jane:I only copied the outline, not the documentation as it is a very long list. William Richard Rutledge married Elizabeth William is Greenbriar Co., WV. the family migrated to Fulton Co., ILL. this is one of my Brick Walls.
I believe that they came from Maryland but no proof. I have all kinds of documentation after they went to ILL. Part of the family went to McDonough Co., ILL.
This is another reason I believe they came from Maryland. About the same time that William went to Fulton Co., ILL, another family, Peter Rutledge and wife Laura moved there from OH. Peter and Laura and some of their children moved to McDonough Co., ILL and that is where Peter died.

I don't know how to answer the most wanted for Sarah Rutledge who marries McIntyre and dau marries in McLean Co, IL. I have a pretty large data base of McLean Co Rutledges. I think she may be dau of James Mayes Rutledge who moves to Montgomery Co, IL. That Sarah is born abt 1843 in Montgomery Co, 1850 census.
Mother is Sarah Brin Richardson. James Mayes Rutledge is son of Thomas and Sarah Smith Rutledge.
James leaves McLean Co and moves to Montgomery Co IL after marriage.
He's born 23 Sep 1798 Mayesville, Banks, GA and dies 27 Mar 1880 Hillsboro, Mont, IL.
