WM. M. RUTLEDGE was born in Roane County, Tenn. in 1848, and
is one of a
family of six children born to Geo. P. and Delia (Tedford) Rutledge. The father
was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., June, 1813, and followed farming in that
and Blount Counties until about 1861, when he moved to Spalding County, Ga.,
and from there in 1865, to Huntland, Franklin Co.,Tenn., at which place he
embarked in merchandising, and continued that until a short time before his
death, which occurred in February, 1884. The mother, a native of Alabama,
preceded him May 11, 1878. Wm. M., the subject of this sketch, remained with
his
parents until their death, and in 1878 he began merchandising for himself, and
in partnership with Geo. C. Rutledge carries a splendid line of general
merchandise at Huntland, this county. In November, 1879 he married Martitia
Staples, daughter of Jno. W. Staples, of this county. This marriage has been
blessed
by the birth of two children, both girls: Roxie and Nettie, both still
living. . Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge are active members of the Cumberland
Presbyterian
Church. Mr. Rutledge has always been a Democrat, and is a strong advocate of
the principles of prohibition
Hello, Jane,
This branch of Rutledges is not part of my line. (At least there is no
proof we share a common ancestor within the past 600 years).
I don't know a lot about Rachel Williams who married William C.
Rutledge. Her father reportedly was George. George Williams married a
Rachel, last name unknown. Rachel Williams Rutledge was born about
1806, in GA. Rachel, wife of George, was born circa 1774, in NC.
In Dallas County, AL Estate Settlements, 1842: Estate of George
Williams mentions as heirs, William Rutledge, and Rachel, his wife.
Rachel Williams, age 76 NC, was enumerated in Wm. Rutledge's HH, 1850
Dallas County, AL. That same census record has Rachel Rutledge's (Wm's
wife) birthplace as Germany. So, that's a contradiction. I'm more
inclined to believe it was GA.
Some of William Rutledge's (1792/4-1867) descendants claim William's
father was Richard (1770-1832), son of John, Jr., and Hannah Rutledge
(part of Hanging Rock John's family - Camden/Kershaw SC).
Based on what I have read, Richard had a son named "William A.
Rutledge", but dates don't match those of William C., who went to TX.
Richard's will of Marion County, AL, made 1831, names sons Abraham,
Smith, William A., and James M.. Another son, John, died in 1823.
Richard's wife was "Winney" (Winefred Patience Elizabeth Blanche SMITH).
Son, William A., above, reportedly was born ca. 1819 and died in 1853.
One of the descendants of Atascosa County, TX Rutledges claims William
Calvin Rutledge was born in Abbeville, SC in 1792, and married Rachel
Williams, born 1806, Jones County, GA, dau of William Williams (not
George). So, there is a difference of opinion as to the first name of
Rachel's father.

John Dallas "Dally" Berryhill was born in the Old Creek Nation,
Georgia, about 1789. He was the fifth child born to John and Elizabeth
(Derrisaw) Berryhill. John grew up in the Creek Nation but, as a
youngster, he probably spent a lot of time in the State of Georgia.
John Dallas Berryhill married Mary Rutledge in Morgan County, Georgia.
Following is a copy of their marriage license:

After their marriage, John Dallas and his wife, Mary, settled in the
Creek Nation until the McIntosh Party of Creeks moved to the West. John
Dallas and Mary had eight children born in the Old Creek Nation. In
1827, John Dallas Berryhill, and his wife and children, emigrated to
the Western Creek Lands with the McIntosh Party. I believe John helped
with this emigration and took his family with the first party who
arrived in the Western Creek Lands in February 1828. John Dallas
Berryhill settled his wife and children, with John's parents
and brothers and sisters, in the fork between the Arkansas and
Verdigris Rivers near the Creek Agency. John returned to the Creek
Nation in Georgia with Colonel Brearley, and the others who were
helping with the emigration, for the second Party of McIntosh Creeks,
which arrived in the Western Lands in November 1828.

CITY OF RUTLEDGE, GEORGIA:
City of Rutledge
The railroad helped give birth to Rutledge in 1845 when it pushed through
the community from Augusta to Marthasville (now Atlanta). The rails being laid
ran directly through the land of Hezekiah Rutledge. The trainmen began
calling the area "Rutledge's Place", later just Rutledge. The city became a
stopover for many train travelers on the Atlanta- Augusta route. Drummers
(traveling salesmen) would stay overnight in the local hotel or boarding
house.
Taverns and shops quickly took advantage of the potential prosperity.

COBB COUNTY GEORGIA:
Hello Angel,
I believe I am a member of Henry Lewis Rutledge's family. My great-great
grandfather was Bryant Spencer Rutledge, an older brother of Henry Lewis.
I have been researching my Bryant's line for about 10 years and I live in
Gwinnett Co., GA and was raised in Cobb Co., GA. But, I unfortunately have not
done the actual research for the documentation to say they were diffidently
brothers. I would say what I have found and been told by others would make it
seem so. But as we all know, "seems so" just doesn't quite get it around
here. But, I will gladly share with you what I have and maybe I'll get around
to
proving those facts soon. It just hasn't been at the top of my priority list.
This is what I believe to be true - not all facts within have been verified
with documentation.

Hello Angel. My name is Carol Rutledge and I live just over the
Alabama
line near Temple, GA. While I haven't been able to track my Rutledge line
beyond SC in 1822, I do know they came through Gwinnett (I think), DeKalb,
Campbell, Carroll, and Haralson Counties. My great great grandfather's name
was Benjamin H. Rutledge and he was married to Jane Rice. They had 12
children. Some of them stayed local, but several of them moved through
Alabama and on to Texas. Some of them I haven't been able to track down.
Perhaps we're related and perhaps not, but I'm certainly willing to share
information just in case. Carol

My name is Angel Thomas. I live in Alabama. I am new to the group because
I
just started a few months ago looking for Rutledge relatives. I have
traced
them (I think) all the way back to Virginia in 1711. I know they moved
from Va.
to S.C. and then to Cobb County Ga. Lewis Henry Rutledge was listed on the
census in 1850 in Powder Springs. I was wondering if anyone had any info
on any
Rutledges in that area. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Most of the information on Reason Rutledge came from Family
Group Sheets that were filled out by a Deborah Polk in LaGrange, GA, and I have
not been able to confirm it all.
Reason Rutledge born between 1790-1800 in SC, married around 1820 in SC, and
died between 1840k-1850 in Campbell Cty, GA. His wife Nancy was born in SC in
1795. She remarried 08/15/1854 in Campbell Cty, GA, to a William South or
Smith. She died after 1855. Reason and Nancy had 5 children.
Albert was born 1820-1821 in Abbeville Cty, SC, and died September, 1855, in
Campbell Cty, GA. Benjamin H. was born 04/09/1822 in Abbeville Cty, SC; married
12/22/1844 in Campbell Cty, GA, to Jane Rice. They had 12 children and there'll
be more about them in a bit. Benjamin died 09/28/1884 in Haralson Cty, GA, and
is buried in Union Hill Cemetery. Hezekiah was born in 1827 in Abbeville Cty,
SC, married 11/08/1846 in Campbell Cty, GA to M. Elizabeth Allen. There was no
date of death given. Hezekiah and Elizabeth are listed in the 1850 GA census
with 2 children. Esa W. was born between 1830-1835 in Anderson Cty, SC. Polly
was born 1835-1840 in Anderson Cty, SC. I found Albert, Esa, and Polly listed
living with Nancy in the Campbell Cty, GA, 1850 census.
Now, back to Benjamin H. and Jane. Benjamin's info is listed above. Jane Rice
was born 01/09/1826 in GA possibly in DeKalb Cty. Her father was listed by Ms.
Polk (referred to above) as James or Thomas along with a note that she had 1
brother still alive when she died in 1936. They had 12 children. Susan was
born in 1845 in Campbell Cty, GA, and married 06/04/1861 to Thomas Underwood.
They are listed in the Carroll Cty, GA, 1870 census with 2 children. Ellen was
born in 1848 in Campbell Cty, GA, and married 12/17/1865 William F. Hicks. From
F King in the SC Most Wanted, she is listed as died 12/04/1920 in Texas. Ellen
and William were married in Haralson Cty, GA. Thomas R. (aka "Bud") was born
05/25/1850 in Campbell Cty, GA, and married 12/22/1873 in Haralson Cty, GA, to
Elizabeth White. They had 5 children with 1 surviving infancy. Thomas and
Elizabeth are buried in Mt Carmel Cemetery. Descendants still live in the
Carroll Cty, GA area. Margaret was born in 1853 in Campbell Cty, GA, and
married 11/10/1870 a Doctor? Cain. John Spencer was born February, 1856 in
Campbell Cty, and married 12/27/1877 in Haralson Cty to Jo Anna Whitton. They
are listed in the Haralson Cty Marriage Book as JS Rutledge and Jonah Whitton.
They are my great grandparents and had 9 children: 3 died in infancy, 1 died at
28 with no children, and the 5 surviving had grand, great grand, and great great
grand children. Their son J William is in the Haralson Cty Marriage Book as JW
and married Minnie Fincher. Benjamin (possibly BH Jr) was born in 1857 in
Campbell Cty and is listed on the Haralson Cty Voters list for 1896-1897. James
A was born 02/25/1860 in Campbell Cty, GA and died 03/02/1905 and is buried in
Piney Woods Cemetery. He may have married twice: first to Luana who is buried
next to him in Piney Woods and second to Eufala Stringer which is listed in the
Haralson Cty Marriage book. William J. was born in 1861 in Campbell cty,
married 09/18/1884 in Haralson Cty to S. Isabella Whitton (she's listed in the
HC Marriage book as SJ). He died in 1931 and both are buried at Union Hill.
Their son WW married Pearl Carroll and a possible second son Olen married Azelea
Dean and both of these are listed in the Haralson Cty Marriage Book. Jane was
born 02/28/1864 in Carroll Cty, GA and later married 10/11/1881 to William
Washinton Whitton in Haralson Cty. They had many children, grands, great grands,
etc. The Whitton family has a reunion annually in Haralson Cty. Joseph M was
born in 1865 in Carroll Cty and married 06/01/1890 in Haralson Cty to H A Morgan
and possibly married again to Lou Ella? McAdams. I'm working with a local Mc
Adams family for more details on this. Ephraim (Ephram) was born in 1868 in
Carroll Cty and Henry F in April, 1870, in Carroll Cty. All children except
Susan and Ellen are listed as living with Ben and Jane in the Carroll Cty, GA,
1870 census.
There's one other listing in the Haralson Cty Marriage Book for Jones, Charles
and Rutledge, Ida on 07/05/1897, but so far I haven't found them.
Hope all this helps someone. I'll still working on the Rutledge's from close to
home, but would enjoy corresponding with my some of my yet undiscovered
cousins. Thank you, Carol
I'm relatively new to computer genealogy and wasn't able to post
a query on your web site Most Wanted; I saw the above email address and decided
to try it. On the Georgia Rutledge list, a Kathye ? inquired about the Haralson
County, Ga. marriage book listings. I'm related to most, if not all, the
Rutledge's listed in her query. On the South Carolina Rutledge list, Florence
King mentioned a Benjamin Rutledge, his wife Jane, and their 12 children. My
great grandfather was their child #5 named John Spencer Rutledge. Since her
email address was listed, I've sent her an email.
This looks like quite a good site with many "cousins" sharing information.
Please advise me on how or what you might suggest I do to become involved.
You'll probably have to keep it quite simple because I'm not a computer expert;
I'm still a novice at this.
Thank you for your time. Carol Rutledge
The article is very interesting. I am related by Andrew and
Johns brother George. I have their parents as Edward Thomas Rutledge b.
Scotland and d. abt. 1725 Tyrone Co., Ire. wife Elizabeth Graem. I show Edward
Thomas having 7 children: George, Bryon, Thomas, Katherine, Andrew, Edward and
John. Looks like I will have to change his place of death.

Thanks for telling me about your Rutledge website; I will check
it out!
Owen and Rutledge families of Wilkes County, GA are familiar ones. My
ancestors, Rebecca Jarrett Sappington and her husband, Richard Sappington,
were adm. for the estate of Wm. Partridge. His daughter, (or niece... I
forgot!) Elizabeth married a Rutledge. Rebecca Jarrrett 's sister, Sarah,
was the wife of Jesse Partridge. The Owen name braids in and out of the
Rutledge and Sappington families of Wilkes County.
One of Rebecca Jarrett and Richard Sappington's granddaughters, Rebecca
Jarrett Isabella Sappington b. ca. 1812 Wilkes County, GA, married Jacob
RUTLEDGE Brooks b. 1806 Warren County, GA to James Brooks (son of John Jr.
and Jane May) and Falby Cobb or Storey.
I cannot find the REASON FOR THE RUTLEDGE in my Jacob's name! I know there
is a Cobb/Rutledge a generation later. Do you know of a pre 1800
Rutledge: Brooks
Rutledge: Cobb
Rutledge: Storey

Hi Kate and hi Rutledge Cousins.
I picked up the Most Wanted Rutledge website from a couple of cousins and
with information provided by members of this group, have so far built it
into a 400 plus page database where one can track their ancestors county
to
county and state to state employing every type of record provided by this
group.
I post the records as is...........not always in good format, but always
searchable, and always with the submitters name and email
address........if
provided.
If not initially provided, I open a permanent invitation that if you ever
see something on Most Wanted that you provided and does not have your
identification, please break down the door and let me know.
Our Anglo-Scot ancestors may have been robbers and thieves, but we have
reformed. We hate thieves.<GRINunless they happen to be our ancestor.

I am afraid you have been the victim of a lazy surfer--many of us old
timers who went to the hot courthouses, etc to collect data find that
our work is stolen (and it is stolen when it is used without giving
credit) --somehow, people think because they put it on the internet that
is not the same as copying from someone else's book. There was a time
(and it still is a crime from copying another's work and claiming credit
for it--or not giving a proper quote source) that such theft could be
punished by law. There are some who feed such thief's false information
and then when they copy it to the internet, go on line and declare the
work false. A lot of work for a moment of satisfaction but ------
I recently had one person "order" me to forward all my data on a
particular family so his files would be "complete"--and I was given
instructions how I was to organize the data before I sent it to him. !!

Jan,
Not all of us are thinking all of the time, and I'm glad that
you
haven't shared anything with me without telling me it was private, for
I'm just the one to assume that if its told without warning, and it
doesn't seem damning, then its ok to use. I hope that you approached
that person, and that you've gotten things as correct between you and
them as possible, but make sure that you "mark" your secret / private
info. I guess that working in a secret / top secret environment for the
past 20 years in the USMC has given me the edge on marking my data, but
at the same time, if I don't see "marks", then I assume its
unclassified!!
I know that this doesn't change things, but...

I, too, have been searching for proof of Reason Rutledge and
Nancy's
being the parents of Benjamin Rutledge. Many of the documents available
seem to establish a connection between Nancy and Benjamin. And Reason
seems to be the logical father and husband.
I have added to my records the additional information that you had on
the children and their spouses. I do have William with the middle
initial of L instead of J--but mine may be a typo--I'll need to check my
records when I have time.
Benjamin was the great-great-grandfather of my husband. His
great-grandfather was William Francis Hicks, married to Ellen Rutledge
on 7 Dec 1865 in Carroll County, Georgia.
I have the following notes from my mother-in-law (Ozelle) and her older
sister (Ione):
From letter by Ozelle Read King: "You see Grandma Hicks (Ellen Rutledge)
took two or three sons (Otto and Delos) to Waxahachie to put them in the
Presbyterian College there. (They were staunch Cumberland
Presbyterians.) While there, so Ione says, their first Family Bible was
burned when they lost their home by fire. We have leaves from her
second Family Bible in which she (Ellen Rutledge Hicks) recorded only
her immediate family."
1900 census: Ellen is mother of 9 children - 5 living; father and
mother both from South Carolina.
Notes from Ione: "Ellen Rutledge Hicks was well educated--Bible
reference books."
These are my notes about Benjamin: [Family story stated that his name
was James and that he taught the planter's kids. However, 1850 census
states that he cannot read or write; this is not present on any other
census, but his wife is listed in the 1860 census as not being able to
write. Three children, ages 15-11, in 1870 census cannot read or
write--probably because of the war.]
25 Dec 1984: Ione Read stated, "We had an aunt we called Aunt Mag and
one Aunt Susan...the sisters of Ellen Rutledge Hicks."
Thanks again,
Florence

Reason Rutledge (born 1790-1800 in SC) (married about 1820 in SC to
Nancy ? (born 1795 in SC)/Reason died between 1840-1849 in GA). Nancy
remarried 08/15/1854 to William South in Campbell Cty, GA. Their
children: Albert born about 1820 in Abbeville Cty, SC; Benjamin H. born
04/09/1822 in Abbeville Cty, SC; Hezekiah born in 1827 in Abbeville Cty,
SC; Esa W. born between 1830-1835 in Anderson Cty, SC; Polly A. born
between 1835-1840 in Anderson Cty, SC. Albert, Esa, & Polly are llisted
with their mother in the 1850 Campbell Cty, GA census. Benjamin was
married with 3 children and Hezekiah was married with 2 children in the
1850 Campbell Cty, GA census. Note: not all the information on Reason
and Nancy has been verified yet. Benjamin was my
great-great-grandfather. He married 12/22/1844 in Campbell Cty, GA to
Jane Rice who was born 01/09/1826. They are both buried in the Union
Hill Cemetery in Haralson Cty, GA. Benjamin died 09/28/1884 and Jane
lived to be about 110 when she died in 1936. Their children: Susan
born in 1845 was married to Thomas Underwood 06/04/1861 in Campbell Cty,
GA. They had 2 children listed in the 1870 Carroll Cty, GA census.
Ellen was born in 1848 and married William E. Hicks 12/07/1865. Thomas
R. (aka TSB) was born 05/2/1850 and married Elizabeth White 12/22/1873.
They had several children, grandchildren, etc, some of whom still live
in Carroll Cty, GA. Margaret was born in 1853 and married a Doctor Cain
11/10/1870 in Carroll Cty, GA. John Spencer was born 02/09?/1856 and
was married to Jo Anna Whitton 12/27/1877. This is my greatgrandfather
and mother; they had 5 surviving children and many grandchildren, etc,
that are scattered throughout Haralson, Carroll, Cobb, and other
counties. Benjamin (Jr?) was born in 1857 and possibly married a Nancy
(Whitton?). James A. was born 02/25/1860 and married a Luana? who is
buried with him in the Piney Woods Cemetery in Haralson Cty, GA.
William J. was born in 1861 and married Isabella Whitton 09/18/1884 in
Haralson Cty, GA. They had many children, grandchildren, etc. There's
an annual Whitton Family Reunion in September. Jane was born 02/28/1864
and married William Washington Whitton 10/11/1881. There's quite a
number of descendants from them. Joseph was born in 1865 and married H.
A. Morgan 06/01/1890. Benjamin and Jane's last 2 children were Ephraim
born 1868 and Henry F. born 1870; I've not found them anywhere except
the 1870 Haralson Cty, Ga census.
Hope this info helps someone out there. Carol
Jane/Jean Rutledge b. 1742 Augusta County, VA m. Jonathan Brooks
b. VA, d.
1790 Montgomery County, VA.
Does anyone have a list of the descendants of this couple? Were they in
North Carolina at any time? Did they go to Wilkes County, GA?
Are there Rutledge connections between Jackson Middleton Rutledge and
Middleton Brooks (RWS from Halifax County, VA)
Middleton Brooks was closely tied to The Rev. James Brooks who had a son
named Paschal Brooks. Paschal said both of his parents were b. VA.
Are there connections between the above Rutledge lines and the Wilkes
County, GA John Rutledge lineage?
Are there connections between Jane/Jean Rutledge and the Rutledges in Troup
County, GA?
Are there Rutledge connections to the Joseph Cobb/Ezekiel Cobb of Wilkes
County, GA?
The questions arise in relationship to my ancestor: Jacob Rutledge Brooks b.
1806 GA, son of James Brooks and Falby Cobb. I don't know the reason for
his middle name. (James Brooks, my ancestor, and The Rev. James Brooks,
have been confused and treated as one person).
Jacob married Rebecca J. I. Sappington whose grandparents, Richard and
Rebecca Jarrett Sappington, served as adm. of the estate of William
Partridge, father-in-law of John Rutledge m. to Elizabeth Partridge.
(Elizabeth's brother was married to Rebecca's sister, Sarah Jarrett.).
There is a Rutledge who married two Brooks sisters, daughters of John
Pleasant Brooks b. 1835 GA.
It appears that there is a connection of some kind; I just can't find the
right strings to pull.
Kind regards,
C Forde
A few days ago, Karen Foss brought up Goldie Hawn's Rutledge
connection,
saying she claimed to be a direct descendant of Edward Rutledge, signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
I did a little research, and think it is quite likely. Goldie's father was
Edward Rutledge Hawn (1908-1982), a violinist, among other things. Is it
possible that Rutledge was Edward's mother's maiden name?
The original Edward Rutledge, who died in 1800, had only one child Goldie
could be descended from: Henry Middleton Rutledge (1775-1844). Henry had eight
children, two of whom died young. The others were:
Mary (1801-1872)
Edward Augustus (1802-1826)
Henry Adolphus (1805-1883)
Henrietta Middleton (1807-1842)
Emma Middleton (1812-1852)
Arthur Middleton (1817-1876)
Anyone care to take it from there?
Peter Danner
Reason may have had a brother John. I found a reference to him
in the Campbell Cty, GA, 1840 census. There's a John Rutlege age 50 in the 1850
Carroll Cty, GA census along with Eliza age 23, Joshua age 12, Jackson age 6,
and Sarah A age 3 mo.
These Rutledge's are buried within 5 miles of my home in Haralson Cty, GA, and I
can take photographs for anyone who wants them: Benjamin and Jane Rice
Rutledge, John S. and Jo Anna Whitton Rutledge, William J. and Isabella Whitton
Rutledge, Jane Rutledge and William Washington Whitton. Note: there's a
Whitton reunion annually on the Saturday following Labor Day at Corinth Baptist
Church in Haralson Cty, GA. I am also near the cemeteries where Thomas R. (Bud)
and M. Elizabeth White Rutlege and James A. and Luana Rutledge are buried.
My grandmother Rutledge gave me some old, old photographs among which are a few
pictures of Jane Rutledge and some of her children. There is also a photgraph
of Jane in what must have been here last years.
Hello, Kate
The short answer is I don't think so. It's my Joseph Rutledge who was
married in Woodville (born in Oglethorpe Co., GA -which I left out).
Joseph's siblings are:
1) Jane m. Joel Glass
2) John m. Elizabeth Stewart
3) Thomas J. m. Nancy Echols
4) Dudley Atkinson m. Rachel Glass
5) Sarah m. Unk Echols
6) James, Jr. m. a)Susannah Sherrer b)Emeline Granberry
(7 - my Joseph)
8) William Owen m. a)Elizabeth Partridge b)Melina Foster c)Edna L. Willis
d)Jane Horton
I don't know the names of 2)John's and 3)Thomas J.'s children. Maybe
there's a Stephen there. I don't show a Stephen Rutledge anywhere on my
tree, but there is so much I don't know. I'll be on the look-out! Byrd

Hi everyone,
While searching for my Levi Rutledge 1803 Md -1874 IL, I found
the
following newspaper article about a Levi Rutledge in Savanah
GA. It is
not my Levi but maybe some else is looking for this person.
Donna in beautiful Oregon
"Stevens Point Daily Journal (Stevens Point, Wisconsin) 26
December 1896
Three Homicides
Savannah, Ga., Dec. 26. - Three homicides are the
record of Christmas
in Savannah. One negro boy shot another through the heart
Friday
morning, killing him instantly; William Titcomb, a white
man, was
fatally stabbed in a quarrel early in the morning and died in a
few
hours, and Levi Rutledge (colored) was shot and killed by a
policeman at
night.
Good morning,
This is another longshot. Saw your post at IGW and IRELAND
lists. I
have Rutledges, but have not had much luck researching that line,
or
finding living cousins. Maybe you could help ???
This is my RUTLEDGE line in a nutshell . . .
*** James Mayes RUTLEDGE, born 20 Aug 1800, GA, married Sarah
Brim
Richardson SMITH, on 2 Sep 1820. She was born 20 Dec 1795,
SC
*** Their daughter, my line, Eliza (Elizabeth) Ann RUTLEDGE, born
7 Mar
1839, IL (or OH ?), died 17 Oct 1920, (ID ?). I have a
picture of her,
the only picture of my RUTLEDGEs. Would like to find more
pictures of
RUTLEDGEs. She married 28 Jun 1857, Josiah Thomas ELLIOTT
(another
deadend line).
*** Their daughter, my line, Sarah Belle ELLIOTT . . . .
That is all that I have for my RUTLEDGEs, except we know that two
of our
RUTLEDGE ancestors signed the Declaration of Independance, and
the
United States Constitution, I believe James and Edward RUTLEDGE ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

One more time. I've seen the George
Rutledge and Jean Kleghorn family
discussed in the archives of this list, so hopefully someone is
researching
it. If not, I'll be out of here soon.
This family was in Franklin Co., GA by the late 1780's,
Rutherford Co., TN
by the early 1800's, and in LImestone Co., AL by the
1820's. Traveling
with this family was the family of Thomas Thomas. A Timothy

this George
Rutledge be the son of George Rutledge and Jean (Kleghorn?) whose
daughter
Jean married Thomas Thomas?

You might find this interesting. It is a note to my Cousin John Malcolm
Rutledge in the Desert. He sent this letter on to the assoc. but now we
have new members. You said you wanted a little history about the
Rutledge's and I will send more, as I find it.

I talked to dad about your questions. He believes they came to this
country in April 1926 but is a little hazy about it.The name of the ship
was the LETITCIA of British registry. He played the violin in the ships
band and also was paid to work on the ships newspaper The ship left from
Glasgow and arrived in Montreal Canada. They then took a train to Windsor
where grandpa was there to meet them.He took them to a three bedroom home
completely furnished. This was almost unbelievable for people who lived in
a two room close with a bathroom down the hall. Before coming to this
country they lived in a beautiful town called lochgilphead with grannies
sister Lizzy Gillies. This home faced a beautiful body of water . This was
in the highlands.I saw this area in July 1970. I forgot what year it was
but my dad was goodwill ambassador to Lochgilphead from the Town Alma
Michigan they treated him like a king and he made the newspapers. There
was people still living there that remembered the Rutledges.Especially
grannies sister lizzy. They said she was the grand old lady of the
town. When we went to Lochgilphead we were able to go by automobile. But in
my dads time they had to go by ship to a town near Lochgilphead. When dad
and mother went to Scotland they ran into Betty leach, and Betty was
bragging about being on the same airplane with the goodwill ambassador to
lochgilphead. Was betty surprised when she found out it was my mother and
dad.Any relatives of the Rutledges or Aitkens that came to this country
did not stay they all went back to Scotland.Grandpa came to Canada in
1923 we do not know the name of the ship.He came with the harvesters and
harvested crops in western Canada After his contract with harvesters was
done he worked his way to Windsor.Where Mr. Smith was living.I never met
him, but I new his son Andrew Smith.Mr.Smith and his wife stood up for
Grannies and Grandpas Wedding,in Scotland.I think Mr. Smith was from
Aberdeen .Andy Smith told me that as a small boy he had to share his bed
with Grandpa.Grandpa got a Job working with a Detroit shipyard.After a
short time he answered an advertisement to work as a sheet metal worker
for R.C.Mahon Co.In a matter of a couple of months after hiring in he was
made shop superintendent,he was very smart and ambitious.he learned his
trade in the old country plus he graduated from a correspondence
course. The young smith boy Andrew got a job through Grandpa and became
one of Mahons top sales people.Grandpa sent the money for his whole
family to come to Canada that was for Grannie and six kids. But the
captain of the ship would not allow them to go because their child Andrew
was very ill.I believe it was then that grandpa went back to Scotland for
two months vacation. After Andrew died they were able to come to this
country.Andrew was sick his whole life from birth and was not able to
attend school.I said to my dad, Grandpa had a lot of guts coming to this
country expecting to find work and earning enough money to bring his
family over.My dad agreed but said grannie took even a bigger chance, she
had six children and her husband may of disappeared in the new world. He
said he knew of a couple men that changed there names and vanished. He
said that he read part of some letters that Grandpa wrote and there was
no doubt he loved his wife.I guess that the bad rutledges from the
borders did have some good points and above all loyalty.
wow I did not mean to get so carried away

RE: Early GA Records, Vol I and II, p. 248
Rumsey, Reuben 1, Rumsey, Richard; old soldier, Rutledge, William P.
Sappington, Richard, Sappington, Caleb, Washington, Geo., Wheatley, Geo.
First, I am not certain I am reading this correctly... but, it appears that
William P. Rutledge was involved in a land deal with my ancestors, Richard
Sappington and his son, Caleb Sappington. Does anyone know if there is a
kinship involved? I believe this same Rutledge was a co-adm. with Richard
Sappington for a will. (Wilkes County, GA.) I am interested in knowing the
extended family and descendants of William P. Rutledge as well as kin
connection to the Sappingtons.
Caleb Sappington's daughter, Rebecca Jarrett Isabella Sappington b. 1811 or
1812 married Jacob Rutledge Brooks b. 1806, Walton County, GA. I believe
that Jacob Rutledge Brooks was connected to William P. Rutledge above as
well.
Kind regards, Cynthia
GEORGIA TAX INDEX, 1789-99:
Rutledge, George, Wilkes Co, Ragan District, 1791
Rutledge, James, Oglethorpe Co, Duke District, 1798
Rutledge, James, Oglethorpe Co, Wagnon Dist., 1798
Rutledge, John, Richmond Co, Ward Dist., 1797
Rutledge, Kiah, Oglethorpe Co, Roberts Dist., 1798
Rutledge, Russell, Richmond Co, Ward Dist., 1797
Rutledge, Thomas, Greene Co, Melton Dist., 1797
Rutledge, Thomas, Oglethorpe Co, Duke Dist., 1798
I have a feeling one of these is my brickwall and father of my
ancestor,
Charles Rutledge, b. 1800 GA., died Chambers Co, AL. The
first proof I
have of Charles' existence was when he married in Morgan Co, GA,
in
1825. About this same time, several of the above were also
found in
Morgan Co; John, Kiah, and Russell. Most of the
others were "in the
area".
John had a son, Samuel, who was in some of the same places,
during the
same time periods, as Charles, e. g., Morgan Co, GA, 1820, and
Chambers
Co, AL, 1840. Samuel was about 5 years older than
Charles. I thought:
"maybe Samuel was Charles' brother"! But then
someone names all of
John's children, and Charles isn't one of them! Bummer!
Maybe he was inadvertently left out? Oh, and Charles' 1st
or 2nd
(difficult to tell which) son was named John.
I "think" Samuel's parents' were John and Elizabeth
(Stewart) Rutledge;
and his grandparents were James and Ann (Owen) Rutledge.
BTW, this
Samuel is the one that married Francis McClendon in Morgan Co,
GA, 1818.
I have eliminated Kiah as the father of Charles because of a will
Kiah
left...and Charles wasn't listed as an heir. "Course
he could have been
displeased with Charles for some reason and left him out of the
will!
There is a Russell Rutledge that married in Morgan Co, GA, in
1812, but
unless that was his 2nd, or so, marriage, I have to eliminate his
as the
possible father, because Charles was born 1800.
Then, I eliminated Thomas simply because Charles had no children
by that
name. Is that a good enough reason??
Anyway, a Thomas as the possible father is far down on my
list...good
logic, or not.
Anyone descending from the above James, John, or Samuel want to
do some
DNA testing? I've decided that's the ONLY way I will EVER
prove a
connection.

Below are the first 2 pages of Houston Odell Rutledge book.
I hope some of you find some answers. This is everything on the
background of this family. Marie
A Record of John Rutledge and his descendents
by Houston Odell Rutledge & Sybil King Rutledge
John Rutledge, b 15 Sep 1810 in NC; d 30 Jul 1880 in Jamestown,
Ark, buried in the old Jamestown cemetery near his wife, the rock
marker is now missing from his grave. A sketch of this family now
in possession of a Mr. R. E . Moore of Pine Bluff, Ark, says he
was born at Shiloh Ford of the Atkins, NC. I believe we will find
that he was born in Duplin Co, NC. He is the son of James &
Sarah (Willis) Rutledge. James d 7 Dec 1848 and Sarah rutledge d
14 Feb 1846, these dates and names are the earliest records in
the Gilbert Calloway Rutledge Bible, now owned by Mr Vernon
Varnell of Batesville, Ark. The sketch listed her as Sarah Willis
and listed James' father as Edward Rutledge. There were errors in
the sketch, some had been corrected by Gilbert Calloway Rutledge.
I have records that trace Edward Rutledge and his wife, Sarah
(Armstrong) Rutledge from a will filed in Augusta Co, VA, on back
to Ireland, however, we do not have proof at this time, due to
lack of birth date and place for our James Rutledge, father of
the above John Rutledge. These records were donated by Mr J Frank
Berry of Lewis, Iowa, who does belong to the family of the well
known Ann Rutledge that supposedly was engaged to Abraham
Lincoln.
John Rutledge married 20 Jan 1835, Miss Rebecca Parsons, born 11
May 1814-1815 Tenn; died 5 Aug 1860 Jamestown, AR., buried in the
old Jamestown Cemetery, has a stone headstone on her grave. She
was the daughter of Mr Thomas Parsons and Mrs Susan (Madice)
Parsons. The Bible gives the year of her birth as 1814 and her
headstone has 1815.
We find John & Rebecca living in the section of Alabama that
became Cherokee Co in 1836, they were there in 1835 before it was
named. The 1850 Census shows John & Rebecca and five of their
children, one child had died and was not listed. His name was
spelled Rulage instead of our way of spelling Rutledge on that
census record. Mr Legrand Dean was also listed as a helper on
John's farm.
The courthouse in Cherokee Co, Alabama, burned in 1882, however,
I did obtain the Census Record from Mrs. Robert Neville Mann in
Cedar Bluff, Alabama, a genealogist.
John & Rebecca owned a large farm and the children helped
with the farm work. When the oldest son was 17 years old, this
whole family left Cherokee Co and came to Arkansas, settling
around Alderbrook which was later names Jamestown, Ar. Some of
the descendents still recall the stories their parents passed
down to them about John owning slaves on his farm or plantation
in Alabama and that he would sell his 14 & 15 year old slave
boys. They left Alabama and arrived in Arkansas in 1852.
A John Rutledge served in the civil War under Capt Samuel R
Fetzer and was on the muster roll of the members of this company
when they were surrendered on 11 May 1865 and listed him as
living in Galloway, Arkansas. References to the Independent Co
Chronicle, Vol VI # 2, page 34 & 43.
Ten children were born of this marriage, as follows:
1.. Gilbert Calloway Loranzo Huston Rutledge
2.. Sarah Jane Rutledge
3.. Francis Marion Rutledge
4.. Letha Emily Rutledge
5.. Columbus Knox Polk Rutledge
6.. Amanda L Rutledge

I am trying to send a message to Sean, but it s keeps being
bounced hence sending through the list. Sean, Altough your reply
was YES to my question below, I could not find any positive
reference on your site to my Mary RUTLEDGE and Thomas MORAN. Can
you provide any further information on this? Original Message
was: "Sean, I see that you have an interest in the RUTLEDGE
name. This is a long shot, but in my wife's family a Mary
RUDLEDGE married a Thomas MORAN around 1810-15 probably in
Ballina. Is there any connection with your family/research?"
In addition I have the information that Mary was born around 1787
and possibly in Killala and had some connection to the O'Donnell
family. Many thanks for any help you can provide Peter Harris
Carolyn Gardner
Thank you Darryl. I have already sent the information to my
friends. I think with all those Rutledges living in Chattooga
county at the same ime( Bryant S. my James and William A) there
has to be some connection. All these families lived within 10
miles of each other. They at least knew each other. The problem
is I don't. Mike Rutledge, Boaz AL

Subject: [SC] COPY OF OLD LETTER
The following letter was found in the files of the Georgia
Archives
Atlanta, GA. I have transcribed it as well as possible
using the same
punctuation, spelling, and abbreviations that the author
used. I am posting it to
assorted genealogical list in hopes that it will help someone in
their
search for ancestors. The people mentioned lived in
SC, GA, TN, KY, and IL and
following is a list of the Surnames:
Hawthorn - McClary - Cameron - Miller - Ellis - Fowler - Rutledge
-
Officer
Mayes - McLin - Orr - Smith - Goudy
Good Luck,
Fred Hawthorne
Enfield, Ill., April 30, 1945
Atlanta Historical Society
Atlanta, Georgia.
My dear Miss Blair:
I appreciated very much your reply to my letter of inquiry about
some of
the early settlers in Georgia, and the Atlanta Historical
Bulletin you so
kindly sent me.
These pioneers, who went from the Carolinas to Georgia, stayed
there for
awhile and then went to Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and even to
Oregon
as the tides of emigration swept west-ward were intelligent,
industrious
and religious, but I doubt if they left many records in the
states through
which they passed.
I am happy to send you what I have about the ones who lived for a
time
in Georgia.
Robert Hawthorn was born March 5, 1754 in County Monaghan,
Ireland.
While residing on the Broad River in South Carolina, Robert
Hawthorn served
with the South Carolina troops from Nov. 1, 1776 for eleven moths
and two
weeks.
From that time he served almost continuously until the evacuation
of
Charleston, S. C. After the Revolution, he moved to
Elbert County,
Georgia where he lived about ten years. Then he moved
to Henderson Co.
Kentucky, where he lived about twelve years and then to
Illinois. He died in
White Co., Ill., July 7, 1834.
June 3, 1783, Robert Hawthorn married Mary (Cameron)
McClary. She was
the widow of Robert McClary, a Revolutionary soldier, who died
while in
service in the fall of 1781 in Camden, S. C. There were two
McClary Children,
Susan and Mary. Susan married Peter Miller so of John
Miller in Georgia about
1796. The Peter Millers moved to Henderson Co. Ky., in the
fall of 12807
and to White Co., Ill., in 1813.
Mary McClary married a North, Sidney, I believe in Georgia.
Robert
Hawthorn and Mary (Cameron) McClary Hawthorn had a son Robert
Hawthorn Jr. and
perhaps other children. Mary ( Cameron) McClary Hawthorne
was born in Scotland
in Feb. 1759 and came to the Carolinas with her parents about
1767.
Joseph Hawthorn, a brother of Robert was born in County Monaghan
Ireland, July 10, 1756. While living in Fairfield Co., S.
C. he enlisted in the
Spring of 1779 and served until June 1782.. He married Sept. 5,
1797 in
Elbert County, Georgia, Frances Ellis. She was his second
wife. He died
in White County, Ill., Oct. 30, 1849.
Joseph Hawthorn had a daughter by his first marriage, Margaret
who married
a Fowler. He also had a son Robert H, Hawthorn, who was a
soldier in the
Civil War. He enlisted on the southern side from Camden
County, Tennessee, at
the age of sixty.
John Miller and His wife and one or more children came from
Scotland to
the Carolinas about 1767. At least one child, Nancy, was
born in Scotland.
Peter Miller, so of John, was born in 1768. He married
Susan A.
McClary, daughter of Robert and Mary (Cameron) McClary, in
Georgia, about 1795.
They had a large family moved to Henderson County, Ky., and than
to White Co.,
Ill.
James Miller, son of John, was borne in
Georgia in 1782. He married
Jane Rutledge, daughter of John and Jane (Officer) Rutledge in
Georgia Oct.
12, 1807. They went to Henderson co., Ky. In the fall of
1807 and to White
County Ill., in 1813.
Mary Ann Miller was born in South Carolina (or Georgia) Oct. 21,
1767,
the daughter of John Miller. She was married to James
Rutledge, so of John
and Jane (Officer) Rutledge in Henderson County, Ky., Jan. 28,
1808 (see
Rutledges)
Coming over on the same ship from Scotland were the
Camerons. They had
at least two children, Mary who married Robert McClary and then
Robert
Hawthorn and Thomas Cameron, born in Scotland 1766.
I have a letter written by Sally Rutledge, sister of Ann
Rutledge. She
said "I remember hearing mother tell how her father crossed
the water. Uncle
Tommy Cameron was just a baby and fell over-board. Some one
caught him
by the big tow". Thomas Cameron married Nancy Miller,
daughter of John
Miller (referred to before.) in Georgia about 1796. Thomas
Cameron built a
block-house here in the War of 1812.
I do not know the name of John MillerE28099s wife. As far
as I know
John Miller and his wife did not reach Illinois. I do not
know who the parents of
Mary and Thomas Cameron were. Also Susannah.
John Rutledge was born in Ireland in 1739. He married Jane
Officer who
was born in 1749. They came to South Carolina where there
oldest son was
born Oct. 17, 1768. He married Sarah Smith in
Georgia. She was born Aug.
20, 1778 and died Dec. 12, 1843, He did in McLean County,
Ill., Aug. 20, 1830.
Robert Rutledge was born in South Carolina (or Georgia, Sept. 22,
1783)
married Susannah Mayes and died in Henderson Co., Ky. in
1822.
James Rutledge was born in South Carolina May 11, 1761 and
married Mary
Ann Miller daughter of John Miller in Henderson Co. Ky., in
1808. Two
children,
John Miller Rutledge and Ann Mayes
Rutledge were born in Kentucky, four
were born in White Co, Ill. Where they came in 1813, and three
were born in
Sangamon Co., Ill. Where James Rutledge founded the village of
New Salem.
Jane Rutledge married James Miller (see Millers) Susan Rutledge
married a
Mr Mayes. Both died in Georgia about 1815. Uncle
Billy Rutledge and Uncle
Thomas Mayes, who were in White Co., Ill., cut rounds from a tree
to make
an Ox-cart and went back to Georgia for the five orphaned
children, Mary,
Melinda, Minerva, Jane and Samuel Mayes --- one a six moth old
baby.
William Rutledge was born in Georgia in 1790. He married
Susannah Cameron
in Henderson Co. Ky.
James Mayes who married Sarah Miller,
(sister of Peter, James, etc.)
Thomas Mayes, the Mayes who married a Rutledge girl, and the
Susannah Mayes who
married Robert Rutledge all lived in or near Mayesville,
Georgia. Could
the town have been name for their people?
Another family that lived in George were the McLins. Daniel
McLin whose
daughter, Jane married Robert Orr in Tennessee about 1790, John
McLin
who married Elizabeth Goudy in Tennessee, and Reverend David W
McLin who
organized the first Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois,
June 8,
1819
These people were farmers but they were also school teachers,
justices of
the peace and above all E28093 ruling elders in the Presbyterian
Church.
The first Presbyterian Church in Illinois (Old School) was
organized in the home
of Thomas Rutledge in 1816, and the second Presbyterian Church
(which was
the first Cumberland) was organized in the home of James Miller
(Son of John)
Some time in the future, I may be able to come to Georgia.
Very sincerely yours,
(Mrs. Chalon T.)
Margaret D. Land.

Any information would be helpful.
I did find Byrant Spencer Rutledge listed in the 1850 Federal

[RUTLEDGE-L] Rutledge Family List
I keep watching the list for any info concerning Byrant Spencer
Rutledge
(1809-1896), wife Eliza (maybe Elizabeth) Williams (1811-1888)
lived in GA.
Possibly out of SC. Had 12 children: Joseph S., Martha Ann,
William H., James
M., Thomas J., John H., Irvine A., Robert Randolph, Gilbert
Witherspoon, Mary
Elizabeth, Amanda Leutitia, Frances Isabelle.
I have no idea who Byrant Spencer's parents were etc. I am Joseph
S. 's
g-granddaughter still living in Gwinnett Co., GA. Any
Help. Anybody?
Rutledge rooters:
Don Kelly's brickwall and unidentified ancestor pics website has
dealt this
"orphaned" Rutledge branch an unexpected hand. Not sure
if a curse or an
opportunity. Beginning in July we have been
communicating with descendant
branches of the James Rutledge of Lunenburg VA line who
"share" the picture
of Joseph and/or strong
duplicate naming patterns.
A picture handed down to us by my gr.gr.grandmother Melissa Ann
McCay/McCoy
Rutledge, the "widow" of our Joseph Rutledge, is a copy
of an original
found hanging in a Troup Co. GA home built by a Joseph Rutledge
in the
early 1850s.
Boy are we confused! Our Joseph and Marie H. Rutledge's
Joseph born about
the same time and possibly in nearby places, but with different
simultaneous spouses and families, a few counties away????
After re-studying the geography and dates several times think
this might be
possible: "Our Jos" according to Census records
was b. c. 1810 in SC:
"Came out of nowhere" and md. a young Halls Co.
(probably Cherokee) lady in
1839 (she b. 1823 SC?) and resided in Forsyth Co. GA 1839-46;
then in
Talladega Co AL 1846-1860; died of "unanswered"
circumstances and without a
recorded burial in early 1860. There was an estate
"settlement" later but
Melissa lost the farm.
Due to the Civil War (and possibly the Cherokee-American Indian
relocation
regulations) there were underlying factors now presenting more
possibilities and questions. By 1867 Melissa packed up her
war-returning
and remaining younger children and wagoned to Tahlequah in the
Indian
territory to visit relatives (and marry off her remaining
children). She
had ten children born every couple of years from 1840 until
1859. Many
descendants today.
Marie H. Rutledge's Jos: was born and raised in Wilkes Co. GA
1811-30s; md.
spouse #1 and resided Oglethorpe Co, GA c. 1833-40s; then resided
in Troup
Co. GA c. 1846-92 where he is buried. Had two children by
first wife, born
1832 & 1834. He married twice after being widowed in
1861, had two more
children by spouse #2 in late 1860s. This Joseph was well
connected to
James of Lunenburg VA line, had large plantation and holdings.
Wilkes GA and Talladega Al are only two counties away! Oglethorpe
and
Forsyth also a straight shot across three counties.
There are duplicate name patterns from another branch of the
James of
Lunenburg VA line also found in Joseph and Melissa's children.
Ready for this: Two years ago Rachel D. Clemons suggested a link
to this
line via another Joseph, which we discounted when we saw he had
married
another GA lady in 1846. Now we need to revisit the family
of Joseph
Rutledge and Nancy Harden/Hardin Rutledge of GA to see if there
is a
possibility his son might be the connection. This Joseph
also descended of
James of Lunenburg VA.
Will the real Joseph Rutledge please stand. Suggestions?
A very perplexed Richard,

Richard,
My name is Jeanne. Mike Rutledge and I have just discovered
that we are both
descendents of Alfred Henry. Maybe together we can find out
about Joseph Sr.
By the way, I'm in the northern part of the central coast in
Santa Cruz.

Do you know Benjamin's exact birth
place? I think it is helpful that you
already know the progression of how they arrived in
Georgia. That might
narrow your search. A number of families seem to have come
down out of
PA to VA (some were Presbyterian and left PA because the Quaker
influence
was strong and they were having problems living as they
wanted).
In VA, a generation or so later (and probably after the
revolution,
the families split again; some going to North & South
Carolina; others
started west; and still others stayed in VA. Also, do you
know how
Chorea is carried through blood lines... is it passed on by male
or
female or both? I've not heard of it in our line which we
are beginning
to trace back to VA. We are finding a Rice contingency in
the area of
Prince Edward and Charlotte Counties. CBR

RUTLEDGE, b. GA, d. AL
I've just joined this list, and have searched the list archives
for "my"
John Rutledge, but haven't seen a connection. My husband
descends from
Kate Rutledge, wife of George Gamel, from Mason Co, TX.
Kate's parents
were John Rutledge and Betsy Helm. John Rutledge was said
to be a
Colonel, but I have no verification of this. Betsy was the
daughter of
a white trapper and a Choctaw woman.
John Rutledge married Betsy Helm in Indian Territory, and
separated
after about 7-8 years. At that time, the family was living
in Arbuckle,
Chickasaw Nation. When John and Betsy separated,
daughter Kate went
with her father to Ft. Smith, AR. He died on a business
trip to Mobile,
AL, when Kate was 8 yrs old. This would have been about
1853. He was a
cotton buyer. Kate then went to live with her mother, near
Atoka, in
Choctaw Nation. As a small child, she also went to live at
Camp Burdey,
along with other Indians. It is not known whether both of
her parents
were with her at this time.
This is from sworn testimony of Kate Gamel, 24 Aug 1896, United
States
Court, IT,
at Ardmore, when she applied for citizenship in the Choctaw
tribe. Her
citizenship was denied due to lack of evidence, even though
several
people testified to knowing her and her mother all their lives,
and
knowing her mother to be of the Choctaw tribe.
Kate said that her father was b. in GA. The post on 8 Feb
2000 from
PNO, which listed Bible entries for the James Rutledge family,
had a
John Rutledge b. March 12, 1809. I couldn't tell from the
post if this
was a family from SC or GA.
Does anyone connect to the John Rutledge b. 12 Mar 1809?
Thinking he
could perhaps be my connection.

Here is a list of Rutledges on the 1820 and 1830 census. Some of
the 1820 list was difficult to read. I think they are pretty
accurate and I did my best to check my typing, but I won't swear
to anything. I hi-lighted the ones that had children that could
have been Joseph. There were only 2 such families in 1830. On the
last sheet I sent you regarding GA tax lists, there has always
been a James in Oglethorpe Co. One appears to be older.
We don't of course know when he ("our Joseph or James")
came to Georgia, but at least it's a place to start. I haven't
looked at SC census yet, but I would imagine there are a lot of
Rutledges. Next trip to the library I plan to check on Hall &
Forsyth Co. land, court and probate records for McCoys, as well
as Rutledge. Feed back always welcome.

Thanks Jeanne and Richard for responding to my message. I am new to this group and didn't know if anybody knew anything about Joseph and Nancy. Here is what I have so far. The fist record of Joseph Rutledge is his marrage to Nancy Harden on December 24, 1799 in Columbia County, Georgia. A partial list of the 1805 Tax list James Luke living next to Edmondson & Rutledge in Columbia County, with the Water Course as Greenbriar. The 1806 tax list showes Joseph Rutledge paid $1.00 for slaves and $85.00 for land. It showes his adjoining Luke & Denson in Columbia county. The water way is listed as G. Brier. He is then believed to have moved to Alabama in 1807. He bout land on Febuary 8th, 1818 from Benjamin Murrell of Madison County, Alabama. Two years later in Limestone County, Alabama, he deeded land to John Hardin. On January 2 1821 in Limestone County, Alabama Allison Hodges sold land to Joseph Rutledge. The 1830 Limestone County, Alabama census report shows Joseph Rutledge: Males: 5-10 yr--1; 10-15 yr--2; 15-20 yr--1; 20-30 yr--1; 50-60 yr--1; Females: 15-20 yr--2; 20-30 yr--2; 40-50 yr--1. There is no 1820 census report. From minutes of the New Hope Baptist Church in Monroe County, Mississippi, June 1835, Joseph Rutledge, an ordained deacon, and Nancy, his wife, were received by letter of transfer into the New Hope Baptist Church on the second day of the June 1835 three-day meeting. Joseph died August 13th, 1843 in Monroe County, Mississippi. According to Alfred's family Bible, Joseph was 71 years, 10 months, and 7 days old. The fifth son, Joseph, became administrator of the estate. The appraisal of personal estate of Joseph Rutledge was filed January 2nd, 1844, with a total value of $5295.29.

In reading over rutstates/georgia, I found many names which are
in my ancestral tree.
I recently made contact with a Rutledge cousin in George who has
done extensive work on his Rutledge line. He and his wife were
kind enough to provide me with an extensive Rutledge file. I can
not give out his e-mail address without permission but I can
provide information on a number of individuals or pass along
requests.
The names Jeanette Cuthriell and K. D. Rutledge were associated
with some of the postings but I did not see an e-mail address for
them. Your names were associated with other postings. I'm sending
this to you and you can certainly see my e-mail address. I'm
relatively new to the rutstates pages so I'm not sure how all
this is handled. Can you advise me about what I might post to
rutstates/georgia and or /alabama, how Jeanette and K. D. might
be contacted, whether I should put my e-mail address on postings
to these pages (most people don't seem to do this)?
All of the following are in my ancestral file.
1. John T. Rutledge, married to Sarah L. Davis
2. Thomas F. and Matilda Davis
3. Benjamin Rutledge
4. John T. Rutledge, above, had a second wife, Mahala Cook.
5. James Rutledge and Susannah Shearer
6. Joseph Rutledge, married to Jane Brooker
7. Edward W. Rutledge, son of John T. Rutledge
8. William Owen Rutledge, married to E. Partridge, M. Foster, and
E. Robertson
The rutstates/georgia file also contained info, such as children
of some of above, which I do not have in my file yet, but will
probably incorporate when time permits.

John T and Sarah are buried in that cemetery along with Thomas F

My grand-father, Felix RUTLEDGE, was born in Chambers Co AL.
Felix had a half-brother named John W. RUTLEDGE who was born
c.1827 (probably in Morgan Co GA). I have been unable to trace
the half-brothers and half-sisters of Felix. Do you know who your
John T.'s parents were?
I looked in the Chambers Co Cemetery book ad there was no John T.
or Sarah RUTLEDGE listed. However, there was a Benjamin, born 15
May 1856 and died 27Sep1880. He is in the FREDERICK and DAVIS
Cemetery. Where did this family go?
Incidentally, in a publication called "Family

Hi all:
I rarely write but do enjoy all the stories and info posted.
I have really hit a brickwall with this ancestor. His name was
Samuel Rutledge was born about 1833 in Walker, Georgia. He
married Mary Angeline Lawrence (b:1843; d:1923). They had at
least three kids - Thomas Jefferson Rutledge, Flora Viola

Hello Holly-
It is still eerie, your Littleberry, Nancy, Parthenia Hardin
Rutledge.
Look at the children of our family, #1,2,6,8 especially: Nancy
F.,
Littleberry B., Harriette Adeline and Parthena Harden.
Too close to be just coincidence! We now have pictures of Joseph
and
Melissa Rutledge, and of couple more of these children. Wanna
compare?
Here is the latest on the family group record of our Joseph and
Melissa Ann
McCay/McCoy Rutledge. We have been successful at tracking down
more of the
children, very little else on Joseph and Melissa.
Am hopeful of making some connections, someday. Your line is most
intriguing. What happened to Parthenia's brother, Joseph?

Hello Rutledges- Have been away for quite awhile, ............
I was looking at the Va marriages that were posted by
Ancestry-Com and
found several Rutledges from Lunenburg Va. area, and at this time
I am
almost certain that my husband's Rutledge line connects with the
Lunenburg
area.
I found several Lunenburg marriages I was hoping someone might
know more about. As it stands with my line I have the following:
Parthenia Hardin Rutledge b. 4/1828 m. Samuel Gibson Snead b.
1827.
Both were born in Virginia. Parthenia's parents were Littleberry
Rutledge and Nancy ???, and I believe Nancy's name was Farmer.
There is a
Littleberry Rutledge, born abt 1785, and Nancy Farmer, born abt
1790-1795, married in Lunenburg Co., Va. on 12/30/1812, and with
everything I have been able to find out about that family these
should
be her parents.
The Ancestry Com marriages show the following Rutledges that may
or may not
connect with Littleberry and Nancy.
Blanks Rutledge m. Polly Clay 10/17/1809 There is another Clay in
my husband's line. (Possibly he is a brother of Littleberry?)
Prudence Rutledge m. Chapman Blackwell 1/25/1809 (Perhaps a
sister?)
James Rutledge m. Frances W. Stone 6/18/1845 There are many
Stones
in my husband's line as well. This James may possibly be a son or
grandson of Littleberry and Nancy.
Peter Rutledge m. Mary Borum 12/26/1828
Sally Rutledge m. Richard Crafton 10/14/1844
William Rutledge m. Elay Bowen 9/3/1811 (Again possibly a
brother?)
William Rutledge m. Sarah Sheffield 9/18/1850
The Clay and Stone lines that are in my husband's line connect
with his
Snead line, and as shown above, Parthenia Rutledge married Samuel
Gibson
Snead, so I am sure I've all but connected with the family.
Siblings of Parthenia include
James H. b.abt 1814, (possibly the James that married Francis
Stone?),
Joseph b. after 1815,
Emily b. 3/13/1825, m. to ? Crumpton,
Nancy b. abt 1827, m. to Mitchell Sullivan,
Martha Mary b. 1828, m. to ? Morgan,
Elizabeth b. 1832, m. to ? Heady,
Sarah A. b. 1834
and Harriet Adeline b. 1837.
Nancy Farmer died in Greenville, South Carolina, so Littleberry
probably
had migrated to SC some time before 1837, and Emily and Parthenia
probably
with their families both moved to Salem, South Carolina, where
they are
buried.
Parthenia and Samuel were married abt 1851 in Salem S.C. My
Rutledge
line appears to have left Va area in late 1840's.
If anyone knows anything about the Lunenburg Rutledge line, or if
any of
these names ring a bell, I would love to connect with you. I
would love to
find a connection with any of these Rutledges, especially Blanks
and James
as I am trying to find more about the Snead/Clay marriage and
children in
that family.
An unknown Snead b. abt 1770 (male) married an unknown Clay b.
abt 1775 and
a daughter Nancy Ann Snead was born 2/26/1793. I would love to
find her
siblings to try to connect some Sneads that are floating around
with these
Rutledges. They've been floating around for so long, would love
to find
something to pull them all in before they drown. Appreciate
anything
anyone can offer.

Frieda, in replying to Carrie regarding the Dudley Rutledge
family you list a son Joshua married to Mary ILER. I may be
grasping at straws ( like the three little piggies
My ancestor has the middle name of ILER and her mother was a
Rutledge..
The mother, SARAH E. RUTLEDGE, born about 1845. She is my brick
wall! Do not know her parents. She is NOT any other Sarah E.
Rutledge listed in marriage records in Illinois.
SARAH E. RUTLEDGE, b abt 1845, married Robert S. McIntyre before
1865.
Jessie ILER McIntyre (2nd dau)b. 1867 in Illinois, married Pearl
D. Chesher, 1888 in Bloomington, Illinois
SARAH E. RUTLEDGE was Jessie ILER McIntyre's mother. Have no info
on Sarah's parents but do know she gave her daughter the middle
name of ILER.
A TEASER? ILER name uncommon one. That name did not come from the
McIntyre family. Where did Sarah E. Rutledge come up with the
ILER name? Was HER mother related to Mary Iler, wife of Joshua
Rutledge with both of them marrying Rutledges????

We have the children of these 2 and believe "our" James to be son of James and Sarah... Where soes SC come in????? And are you certain of these brothers William and Joseph??? If so, I echo your "WOW"!!! I think Freida and I both have some (little!) info on James and Sarah but this would be a wonderful link if we can prove it! More, more! Subject: [RUTLEDGE-L] William Owen Rutledge
While posting names to Most Wanted state by state, I collect a
smidgon of
possible connections that must have driven you batty for years.
Today I am
posting Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia and I ran
across the name
William Owen Rutledge several times. We cannot directly place
William Owen
Rutledge in our line can we?
Just about everyone on the list know that my ggrandfather was
Henry Mentlo
Owen. What few on the list know is that his father was William
Owen
Jr....and his grandfather was William Owen.
The Williams by all accounts were around Smith County, Tennessee
for fifty
years or so, but no one knows how many times they left or how
many times
they returned, or where they were during those non-recorded
periods of time.
Can anyone connect William Owen Sr. or Jr. in some way to William
Owen
Rutledge. That is a name combination difficult to just make up
out of thin
air.
Cousin Don going nuts again.....and not too far to go. Happy
fourth.
Don. Happy fourth.
