ENGLAND TO ULSTER:
Were my Great-Great Grandparents.
I have a paper that was written by a relative back in the 1930's that lists some
things, but I would love to find more.
Robert Rutledge - was born in Ulster, Northern Ireland, but came to Canada as an
infant.
His Father was Thomas Rutledge who was married to Jane Thompson, cousin of William
Thompson.
It is said they came to Northern Ireland from England because of religious
reasons.
Is there any place that I can find out more about them? I have no dates of any
kind for Robt Rutledge. I believe that Ellen was born in Canada, but her father
Robert Elliott was born in Ulster.

Message Board Post: Note that ROUTLEDGE was the spelling of our family name on
the anglo-scot border and that spelling is still carried by some of our families
in the UK today. Some changed the spelling after they emigrated to Ireland for
sure, but some may have changed after they came to the US.
I know it has been 4 years since the message has been posted, but if anyone has
more information on the William Routledge line it would be most appreciated (as
this was). I am searching for a friend who is a descendent of Thomas Routledge
through his daughter Agnes.

Hi!
I am descended from John Routledge born in Penrith, Cumberland,
England in 1839. His parents were James Routledge and Mary Slee.
Could we be related?
I was very interested to see the information that
Peter Danner supplied
regarding the parents of Dr. John and Andrew Rutledge. I
have heard that the
family was from Tyrone and seen the marriage to Elizabeth Graem
somewhere as well.
Does anyone know what sources this information comes from.
Does anyone know
how this information fits with the information supplied by

his father
Thomas Rutledge was from Callan, County Kilkenny. I'm
heading for a family

Thank you for your message, Sheila. Does the death date fit
in with your family? All I have heard about my George is
that he was a (roof) tiler, who hurt his back and spent his
latter years in a bath chair. His wife, Ethel, used to
carry him up the stairs on her back. Ethel and George had a
daughter, Margaret Ivy, born 16 March 1907 in Newcastle on Tyne,
and died 7 Jan 1978 in Sydney, Australia. There was another
baby born, who died, but I don't have the dates.
After George's death, his wife and daughter emigrated to

Anything you can find out will be much appreciated.

Hi Cheryl,
A family of de Routledge was apparently the first recorded in
history in the
1400s. They were in Northumberland, England.
Americans named Rutledge came
from England, Ireland, and the eastern lowland side of
Scotland. Personally,
I don't get too excited by national chauvinism which occasionally
moves some
contributors to make extravagant claims about Rutledge
origins. Afterall,
the whole British Isles are not much bigger than New York and New
Jersey
combined. It wasn't impossible for people even a thousand
years ago to cross
borders there. From what I can find out so far, my Rutledges came
from
England to America in the 1680s. I haven't closed the gaps yet,
so can't yet
say this is a fact. And where were they in 1400 or say 1087.
Keith.

Dorothy,
Now I understand the relationships. You and I are both gr
grandaughters of Mary Jane Johns: you through her marriage to
Edward L Cottrell (1876) and I through her marriage to Henry T
Mason (1885). Much of my research has been on the Cottrells
(my grandmother apparently kept touch with her half brothers
Ralph Eugene Sr and Harry C Sr, I don't know anything about a son
named Edward), hoping to find links to my line. I even met a
teacher (of my youngest daughter) Debra A Cottrell d/o Charles R
Cotrell b.1924, s/o Harry C Cottrell Sr b.1878 who was your
mother's brother. I was going to give her a photo of her
father but we lost touch. I
I have photos of small children (I think a Betty, Tom, and ?Jane)
pulling each other in a wagon. There was a goat also.
My grandmother had many photos of Cottrells and I think I know of
more Cottrell people than my own line.
As I said I did not know that Edward and Mary Jane had a 3rd son,
Edward...do you have any info or vital statistics, or descendents
for him? I know nothing about Edythe Rowan either except ?
marriage to Alvin. For your mother's siblings I have Harry C. Jr,
Anita, Bessie, Genevieve, Tom, Betty, Charles R.
I visited Crown Hill Cemetery (my husband's father is there) and
found gravesites of "My loving mother Anita Patterson
29 Aug 1906-30 Aug 1938" (I believe she was former Anita
Lutz and your mother's sister); "Anne Cottrell" and
"Harry Cottrell" (your grandparents?); "Theodore
Hayes" and "Betty Hayes" (must be your mother's
sister Betty). I have many photos, some identified and some
with unidentified people...too bad we don't live close.
One more thing. I think your gr gr grandparents were
Lorenzo Dow Cotrell d.15 Jun 1889 and Eliza H (last name unk)
d.3 Dec 1888 who had children Martha/Mattie, Edward L, and
possibly Mary C. Snow.
I hope I haven't given you too much to read. So interesting
to know what line you descended from and enjoyable to hear from
you.

I am recovering from surgery so am behind in emails and research.
I'm curious to know your maiden name, the names of your parents

you mentioned summer vacations and the Sheridans whom I am

the question about your parents names. Also do you have siblings?
Any questions you may have about any of the names I've mentioned

I recently purchased a book, "The Complete
Book of Emigrants in Bondage", by
Peter Wilson Coldham. It is 900 pages long and has many
emigrants from 1614
to 1775 from England. Most of them are felons who were
sentenced to be
transported to the Colonies. All it gives is the name, date
when shipped,
usually the Ship name and sometimes the date arrived, also it
gives the
English court, so you can find it in Englist Public
Records. The records
will give you the offense, parish of residence and
sentence. In the book I
found the following;
John Rutledge, alias Graham, alias McBlair, alias Lawes,
sentenced to
transportation for stealing a horse, Summer 1738, reprieved for
transportation 14 years summer 1739, Cumberland court.
Richard Routledge, sentenced to transportation, for stealing a
mare at
Stokesley Lent, reprieved for transportation 14 years summer
1765, Yorkshire
court.
Thomas Rutlidge, sentenced for transportation and transported
December 1770
on the Justitia, Middlesex court.
Thomas Rutlege, sentenced for transportation April 1773,
Middlesex court.
William Rutledge, sentenced for transportation for stealing sheep
Lent 1753,
reprived for transportation Lent 1754, Norfolk court.

Don,
I have Hugh Hext, son of Hugh Hext, born in Lverin, Dorsetshire,
England,
died Nov. 25, 1732. He is related to the Hext of Somersetshire,
Great
Britian. He was among the wealthiest men in SC. Was a relative of
Sarah
Fenwick who left him land. Married Sarah Boone.
Like you, I would like to know more about the family as Hugh was
my 7 greats
grandfather. CJ
It seems a long time since I learned that Hugh Hext and
Debbie Boone married
at Christ Church South Carolina. He came from England
(according to my
records), and we know his connection with John Rutledge,
but since that time
I have seen nothing in South Carolina or elsewhere about
other descendents
of Hugh Hext. Anyone have any more information about Hugh?
Don
According to my book there is no known connection between the SC Boones and
the family of Daniel Boone, the famous pioneer. However, both Boone Families
originated in Devonshire, England so there is probably a connection, just not
proven yet. Major John Boone came to SC with the "First Fleet", the first
group of English Settlers in SC. He founded Boone Hall Plantation in Christ
Church Parish. Boone Hall has been the setting for several movies and TV
series including the mini series North and South with Patrick Swayze. He was
also the Great-grandfather of John and Edward Rutledge, the famous patriots
and politicians from SC. His daughter, Sarah Boone married Andrew Rutledge,
a lawyer of note himself. The couple was childless. Andrew's brother, Dr.
John Rutledge married Sarah Hext, the daughter of Sarah Boone and her first
husband, Hugh Hext. I can supply anyone interested with more info in the
Boone ancestors of the SC Rutledge if they are interested.
