  Dear Friends,

My father Cecil M. Rutledge passed away yesterday at Wake Medical Hospital in Raleigh. He was 89. My Dad was descended from the Stephen Rutledge line. He was born in Wirth, Arkansas on July 12, 1917. He spent his childhood in Granite City, IL and later in Southeast Missouri picking cotton. He earned two bronze stars for his service in WWII where he was a combat medic and participated in the Normandy invasion. He later went to Michigan where he worked for GM 23 years, met and married my mom and had me and my sister. We moved to TN when he retired. He had six children of which I am the youngest and many grandchildren. On Thursday we will bury him next to my mother, Estel Clark Rutledge in Maryville, TN.

He is greatly missed,

Julie Rutledge Bates

NOTE BY ADMIN: My dad was the son of Charles Millard Rutledge and Myrtle Mae Thompson. Charlie (as he was called) was the son of John B. Rutledge and Elizabeth Roark. John was Stephen's son.

Comment from: "Don Kelly" [email protected] According to best dates and places where children of Stephen Rutledge and Mary Massey were born, in 1853  John B. Rutledge was born in unknown county Alabama. A year earlier Stephen and Mary and family lived in Lawrence or Giles counties, Tennessee. Two Alabama counties are close to Lawrence county where they lived a year earlier.

So best guess is that John was born in either Lauderdale or Limestone counties, Alabama which are just south of the state line.

As a young man in 1873 John married into the Roark family. Born 1853, John was an older brother of Chelnessie, called Nessie by her father. Chelnessie married to Henry Mentlo Owen was the mother of the Owen family who lived on a farm near Rogers, Arkansas. Chelnessie and Henry were my great grandparents.

So the direct male line from Stephen and Mary Rutledge was John B., Charles Millard, Cecil M. My father Oscar Kelly was born 1910 and spent his childhood near the Owen family who lived near Rogers. Cecil was born Wirth, AR which is a few miles east of Rogers. I believe the Kelly and Owen kids must have known Cecil before his family left for Illinois.

William H. Rutledge, now deceased, was during his  useful life one of the
leading agriculturists of Butler county, and when he died  he left behind him a
finely developed farm, where his family still reside. He  was born at
Rossville, Ohio, May 16, 1845, a son of James and Mary (Mustard)  Rutledge. James
Rutledge was born in Pennsylvania, although his parents were  natives of Virginia,
and his wife was born in West Hamilton, Ohio. In young  manhood, James
Rutledge came to Butler county, Ohio, where he died in 1849,  having been a teamster
all of his active life. He and his wife had the following  children: Mary,
Martha, Margaret, Sarah, William H., and an unnamed son. William  H. Rutledge
attended the schools of his neighborhood, and remained with his  family until his
enlistment
Page 609 for service during the  Civil war, September 10, 1861, in Company I,
35th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at  Hamilton, Ohio, and was sent south. He
received his honorable discharge at  Chattanooga, Tenn., September 23, 1864, having
participated in many battles and  skirmishes, and done his full duty as a soldier.

Returning home to Butler  county, Mr. Rutledge continued to live with
his mother and sisters until his  marriage in 1883, when he began farming in
Lemon township, conducting the  Hoffman farm for twenty-eight years. In 1913 he
bought the present farm of the  family, comprising 186 acres of land, two and
one-half miles west of Monroe,  Ohio, R. F. D. No. 1, Kyle, Ohio, where he
carried on general farming until his  death, June 21, 1915. His remains were
interred in the beautiful “city of the  Dead" at Hamilton, Ohio. January 4, 1883,
Mr. Rutledge was united in marriage  with Mary Hoffman, of Fairfield township,
Butler county, a daughter of George  and Mary Barbara (Dingfelder) Hoffman,
both of whom were born in Germany. When  young people they came to the United
States, locating at Pitts burg, Pa., where  they met and were married. They then
came to Ohio, and secured a farm of wild  land in Fairfield township, Butler
county, which they cleared and developed. Mr.  Hoffman died on this farm in
April, 1887, his widow surviving him until 1911,  when she passed away at the
age of ninety-two years. Five of the nine Hoffman  children are now living,
namely: George, who is a farmer of Plainview, Texas;  Barbara, who is the widow of
Joseph Matson of Monroe station, Ohio; Louise, her  twin sister, who is
unmarried; Anna, who is also unmarried; and Mary, who is  Mrs. Rutledge. The
children of Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge are as follows: Anna  Louise, Martha Elizabeth,
and William Stanley, all of whom are living with their  mother. Mr. Rutledge was
a member of the Christian church of Hamilton, Ohio, but  his family belong to
the United Presbyterian church of Monroe, Ohio. He was a  staunch Republican,
but did not care for office. A quiet, unassuming man, Mr.  Rutledge devoted
himself to his family, and worked long and hard to provide  properly for them,
and when he died had the satisfaction of knowing that he had  made for them
one of the best rural homes in the county, and that he also left  behind him a
reputation for scrupulous honesty, and unflinching adherence to his  word. He
was widely known in the county which gave him birth, and when he passed  away,
he was mourned by many who realized that a good citizen and upright man  was
gone from their midst. Memoirs

They also lost their lives.

Michael was 19 years old.  He was from Mecklenburg County, VA.  He was a

Elizabeth R. Bigger was known as "Liz".  My dad and I had the pleasure of talking with her a few years ago.  We have been trying to connect this family with our Charlotte Co Rutledges but no luck so far.  Her ggrandfather John was born in Ch. Co.  They had a copy of his original will on their wall.  I think I posted some info. and the list last year about "Green Cove" when they had a tour of the Home during the holiday season.

Her line goes back as:
    Elizabeth R. Bigger
    Emmett and Bessie Rutledge
Wm. R. Rutledge - I believe he purchased the land that Green
Cove is located on.  W. R. served in the Civil War.

Albuquerque Journal Obit 12 Sept 2002

Rosemary Rutledge, 46, quietly ended a courageous two-year long battle
with breast cancer on September 9, 2002. Rosemary is preceded in death by
her mother, Edy Schmidt, who also succumbed to her own battle with cancer
in 1994. Rosemary is survived by Kyle Rutledge, her lifelong companion
and father of their two daughters, Adrianne and Teryn Rutledge. She is
also survived by the following family members, father, Willard H.
Schmidt; brothers, Will Schmidt, Jr., Tom Schmidt and wife, Joi, all of
Albuquerque; sisters, Teri Richardson and husband, Dan, of Glastonbury,
CT and Cindy Maxwell and husband, Chris, of Albuquerque; nephews, Samuel
Sandoval, Justin and Ryan Richardson, and Harrison Schmidt; niece,
Antoinette Sandoval; In-laws R.R. and Joy Rutledge; brothers-in-law,
Rusty Rutledge, Jr., Bart Rutledge and wife, Deneen, all of Albuquerque;
nephews, Rusty Rutledge III, and Brandon Rutledge; nieces, Sharlyn
Rutledge, Rachel and Julia Rutledge. Rosemary Rutledge was born in Ft.
Worth, Texas on April 6, 1956 and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The
eldest of five children, Rosemary graduated from Eldorado High School in
1974, immediately thereafter began her career in new home construction
where she was employed by R.R. Rutledge at Rutledge Investment Co. The
extensive knowledge Rosemary gained over the past 28 years has been built
from the sound fundamentals of business and construction detail instilled
by her mentor, R.R. Rutledge. Starting as the receptionist, progressing
to bookkeeper then comptroller of the company enabled Rosemary to learn
the business from the ground floor up. Rosemary earned her General
Contractors License in 1994 and with her background knowledge in
construction became one of Albuquerque's finest award winning women
Custom Home Builders. In 2001, Rosemary directed her focus on
Albuquerque's re-sale home market and joined Keller Williams Realty and
became an active member of the Albuquerque Board of Realtors. Rosemary
was a woman of many talents and outside interests. Aside from winning
Interior Home Design Awards, she was very competitive in the Cutting
Horse arena where she won numerous competitions. She was an enthusiastic
big game hunter, who found excitement on African Safaris and in and
around New Mexico. These awards are indicative of the hard work and
dedication she displayed in everything she did. However, by far the
sweetest rewards in Rosemary's life were her two daughters, Adrianne and
Teryn. Rosemary was a devoted mother who encouraged her girls to strive
for excellence. She participated in their many activities with loving
encouragement, constantly instilling self-confidence and sportsmanship. A
stunning brunette, Rosemary possessed a sense of grace and confidence,
and loved to"let her hair down" by playing billiards, traveling,
shopping, and enjoying time with family and friends. She was the only
woman who could get away with pitchin' horseshoes in high heels.
One can't help but feel that her
life was cut too short,
It doesn't seem fair.
One can't deny the difference she made
In each of the lives she touched,
She really cared.
One can't deny she will live
Forever in our hearts.
She's still there.

Services will be held Thursday, September 12, 2002, 11:00 a.m., at First
Family Church, 4701 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Pastor Galen M. Woodward
officiating. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Rutledge, Jr., Will Schmidt, Jr., Samuel
Sandoval, Dan Richardson, Bart Rutledge and Tom Schmidt. The family would
like to give special recognition to Rosemary's dear friend Karen Hudson
who will be participating in the AVON 3-Day Walk for the Cure in October
2002. Karen will be walking 60 miles in honor of Rosemary and her
courageous fight with breast cancer. Donations are encouraged and payable
to: Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day c/o Karen Hudson, 10916 Malaguena NE,

While At the library in Carrollton (Carroll Co.) Missouri this past week I
happen to run across this obituary. Maybe it will help someone. It was in
the Carrollton Democrat, dated April 17, 1942

YOUNG FATHER BURNS TO DEATH IN EXPLOSION
                                       -------------------------------------
----------
George Rutledge, 42, Could Not Be Rescued From Home At Hein's Lake
                                       -------------------------------------
----------
George Ruledge, 42 burned to death late Thursday afternoon when the stove he
was lighting exploded. He was knocked unconscious, his body in flaming oil,
and trapped in the three-room house at Hein's Lake.
Efforts of his wife and eight-year-old daughter to drag him to safety were
in vain, and before help could arrive the house was a flaming inferno,
preventing all attempts at resue.
The farm home burned to the ground backed by a stiff east wind. Chemicals
were pumped into the house by firemen from the Carrollton Fire Department,
but the building was too far gone to be saved by such meager equipment.. Had
the local department been equipped with a pumper truck, hose could have been
strung from nearby Hein's Lake and perhaps the fire could have been
extinguished.
About fifty people were attrached to the fire early Thursday evening. The
department was called at 5:30. The fireman left after about thirty minutes
of fighting a losing battle.
The body of Rutledge could be seen in the ruins. It was lying on the floor,
about five feet from the stove. Water was pumped from the house well and
poured around the body and through the efforts  of several volunteer firmen
complete loss of the body was prevented.
Coroner E.L. Smith of Tina was called by Sheriff Joe Lyons soon after the
death was reported. He arrived on the scene made several observation and has
called an inquest for Friday afternoon.
Rutledge and his small family had just returned home. Mrs. Rutledge and
Georgia Jane, her daughter were in the kitchen preparing the evening meal,
and Rutledge was in the living room lighting the stove. "Suddenly there was
a terrible explosion" according to Georgia Jane.
Mrs. Rutledge rushed into the room and attempted to drag her husband's body
out of the house. The front door however had been knocked shut tightly and
she was unabled to stand the terrific heat and fumes to get her husband out.
Realizing that she had best save her daughter and summoned aid to get her
husband out Mrs. Rutledge grabbed Georgia Jane jumped in the car in front of
the house and drove to the Brownwood Filing Station about half a mile
distant.
At Brownwood the fire department was called and several men around there
rushed to the scene but found entrance into the house impossible
Fire Chief Charles Hynson, however gained entrance into the building and by
crawling on his hand and knees was able to get a few feet into the front
room.
The place was like a furance Hynson said " I saw what looked like a body on
the floor about five feet from me. It was all in flames"
Mrs. Rutledge was taken to the Staton Clinic, where it was determined she
was suffering from severe shock and minor cuts and bruises. Dr. R. Hamilton
Staton took three stiches in her right leg where a sharp piece of metal had
cut a deep gash.
Georgia Jane a student in the third grade at the Roots School was unharmed
but severely frightened.
Mrs. Rutledge spent Thursday nite in the hospital and was reported Friday to
be " as well as could be expected".

George Rutledge, the son of William H. and Margaret Swortz Rutledge was born
in Meier ILL., Jan 23,1900. He spent the greater part of his life in
Missouri, living for several years at Keytesville.

child was born, Georgia Jane.
Since1939 the family has lived in Carrollton. Rutledge worked for the
Bramhall Construction Company, employed as a truck driver. He was well known
here and had many loyal friends and acquaintances, all of whom mour his
untimely death.

Hi Darla,
Thank you for contributing this obituary.  This George Rutledge is a great
grandson of
Fountain Rutledge.  The obituary helps fill in the blanks in his family
record, such as wife and childs names, place of death etc.  I am sure when
CBR returns from her sleuthing in VA, she will also be happy to have this
information.  Every little bit helps in filling out the family tree.

Patricia,
I'm one of the Ripley Co., MO lookup people, as well as a subscriber to the
RUTLEDGE-L. So your ancestor caught my eye.  I did not find a Rutledge family
on the Ripley census.  So I looked in the "Ripley Co. Records - Obituaries"
by Thelma McManus and found the following from The Prospect and The
Prospect-News . . .
16 Jul 1886 Inf. son of Mr. & Mrs. J.D. Rutledge died last Wed a.m. - sick a
few days.
12 Apr 1889 Willie Russell, age 7 mths, 16 day, died at Van Buren (Carter
Co.) where Mrs. Russell was visiting her sister, Mrs. J.D. Rutledge. . . .
19 Oct 1899  Mrs. J.D. Rutledge, nee L.C. Gentry, died 8 Oct. Married 27 Jul
1884 - had 7 children, only Ettie, Bessie and Jessie are alive. Buried Winona.
1905-1908 Rev. James Rutledge shown as conducting funeral services in the
Methodist church.
19 Mar 1908 - Little child of Mr. & Mrs Rutledge died Sunday 8 Mar - buried
Poyner.
3 Dec 1908 - Joseph Rutledge, 65,[1843] died at home in Grandin (Carter Co.)
11 a.m. on Wednesday of last week. Leaves his mother, also a sister, Mrs. Ed
Ferguson.
30 Dec 1909 - Alex. Rutledge was found dead in bed last Thursday a.m. About
50. Lived here a short time, coming from Mill Springs abt. 4 weeks ago.
Leaves widow, 3 small children.

I don't know if any of these are yours, but look possible. Also a check of
the Carter Co., MO census might show your family.  It's not too far from
Doniphan to the Carter Co., line and the town of Grandin.
