I was asked if some of the records about Col. John McGee of Guilford Co., NC were folklore or documented records?  So the best way to answer that question is to type in brief some of the records that I have found.  Then each of you can ask another question.........I guess!

book:   My McGee and Joyner Families   Pioneers, Patriots and Preachers  by:  Helen Bowling McKnight  1983

John McGee   ca 1716-1773
Our immigrant ancestor John McGee was in America before 1750 when he was granted land on the north side of the Catawba, McGee's Branch, in Anson Co., NC.  John McGee, planter, and his wife Martha of Orange Co., NC sold that land for 17 pounds proclamation money on 5 Feb 1761 to Thomas Thomson of Anson Co., planter.  Wit. to the deed, were Robert Lickie/Luckie/Lackie and Margaret Johnson.  (Keep in mind the boundary changes in 1761...PAK)

Petitions by early settlers for land in NC are listed in THE COLONIAL RECORDS OF NC.  McGee petitions are listed in Vol. IV on pg:  950, 952, 1034, 1039, 1238, 1240 and 1242.  John McGee, James McGee and Andrew McGee applied for warrants for 640 acres each in Anson Co., NC in 1749.  John, Daniel and William McGee, additional land in 1751.

John McGee had a brother named Andrew, a merchant whose will dated 25 Feb 1773 in Dorchester Co., MD provided for his "two nephews Samuel and John McGhee, sons of John McGhee living in NC, Gilfort county."  Andrew also named brothers William, Alexander and Joseph -  all living in Ireland.  The relationship, if any, of "Isabell and Mary daus of John McGhee of Ireland", also named, was not stated.  [MD. Will: Martland Hall of Records, Wills, 1773,  Vol 39  fols. 541-543.  The will mentioned neither wife nor ch; and the inventory of Andrew's estate filed 26 Mar 1773 valuing his estate at 2433.2.11 1/4 pounds, stated, "Kindred, none in province."  [James M. Magruder, MD Colonial Abstracts, Wills, Acts.  1772-1777   pp 74, 75.]

When and where John McGee & his brother Andrew arrived in the colonies has not been established.  A FAMILY TRADITION states that three brothers;  Andrew, John and William McGee, of Irish extraction, "inherited a bleach green" [bleach of green was connected with the linen industry etc] in Ireland which they sold & purchased a ship,"  a merchant vessel which was "already in America in MD.and NC."  No date, or if referred to John McGee and two brothers or the three sons of John McGee and wife Martha.  etc....ca this ship.  More ca Samuel McGee of Dorchester, Md...1790 census, next door to Betty Busick family.  Oct 1792, Samuel McGee and wife Rebecca of Dorchester Co., MD. gave Wm. Bell of Randolph Co., NC the authority to sell land they owned in Randolph Co., to Isaac Causey {W. P. Johnson, NC Genealogy  XIV]  etc ca the Samuel and Rebecca (Busick) McGee records/letters etc.  The will of Andrew McGhee is listed.  etc.

pg: 9   John McGee was active in positions of influence in Orange Co., NC.  March 1753 served as constable in Orange Co.  1755 John McGee was recommended & "Ritchd" Parker as proper persons to command the two new companies. [Saunders, Colo. Records  V, pg 365.  John McGee, an "ordinary keeper"of Orange Co., NC was deeded 495 A. by Stephen Elmore, 27 May 1756. etc....

John McGee of Guilford Co., NC died 13 Dec 1773 and a list of more than 500 persons indebted to his estate, "An Inventory of all the Bonds, Bills and Notes of hand, Principal and Interest of the estate of John McGee Deceased," was published in The N.C. Genealogical Society Journal, Vol. I, Jan 1975, on pg: 38 to 43.   John McGee's original Will:  NC State Archives in Raleigh;  Sec. of State's Wills, 1663-1789, Vol XIX, pg. 49, folios 1, 2, & 3.
An abstract of the Will is in the book.

John McGee had two children:  Samuel and Nancy (Ann).  The name of the mother of those two ch. is not known.  Nancy died in Nov 1832 aged 78 or 79 according to a notation in the Diary of Elizabeth Dick Lindsay, publ:  in NC in 1975 by the late Gordon Gray, a descendant of Nancy McGee Lindsay.  "Nann"  (Nancy) McGee, "d of Col John McGee,"  md: Robert Lindsay, son of John Lindsay, 23 June 1772.

The date of Col John McGee's md to Martha McFarlane is unknown.  Family records and DAR...list ca 1754.  Five ch:
Jean/Jane, John, Susannah, Andrew and William McGee.  etc...

Other records, later.

I was so pleased to see your message, and hope we might compare notes on the McGees. Do you know about Martha "Mattie" McFarlane, mother of your William McGee, and her career as a spy during the Revolution? It's a fascinating story, and she must have been a remarkable lady.

As to the information you mention, ie. that John McGee's first wife was named Nancy, and she died on the ocean crossing, and that his father and grandfather were both named Henry, I've seen these things on the computer before; but don't know how accurate they are.

To begin with, John McGee (and his brother Andrew, and another McGee man named James, I don't know how he is kin), applied for land grants in NC in 1749. John's daughter, my 5th great grandmother, Ann "Nancy" McGee (later Mrs. Robert Lindsay), was born in 1753/4. So, if John was already in NC in 1749, and Nancy was born 4 or 5 years later, her mother can't have very well died on the ocean crossing.

There was a man named Thomas Ridge who wrote his will on 17 Feb. 1747/8 (old style calendar), in Bladen Co., NC. (A part of Bladen became Anson in 1749/50, and that section became Orange & Rowan in the early 1750s, became Guilford Co. in 1771, and Randolph Co. in 1779... very confusing!) Thomas Ridge's will was signed by Elizabeth McGee as a witness. Thomas' will was probated in Rowan Co. in 1754, and in 1754 and 1755, Elizabeth McGee appeared in lawsuits regarding the settling of his estate. Thomas had a son, also named Thomas Ridge, born in 1749. Thomas Ridge, Jr. sometimes went by the name Thomas Ridge McGee. In his application for a pension as a soldier of the Revolution, he stated that he was born in Randolph Co., NC on 19 Feb. 1749.... which suggests that he was born in the same section where our John McGee lived. My theory is that Elizabeth McGee was the sister of Thomas Ridge (and therefore a daughter of Godfrey Ridge who did have a daughter named Elizabeth), and tha!
t she was the first wife of our John McGee, and aunt and guardian of Thomas Ridge, Jr.

Further support of this can be found in Thomas Ridge (McGee)'s pension application. He states that he was in Maryland on business in 1777, and therefore enlisted in the army up there. Now, our John McGee's brother, Andrew McGee, died in Maryland in the spring of 1773, and left property to two of John's sons, Samuel and John, Jr. John, Sr. died in December 1773. It occurs to me that if Thomas Ridge was an orphan, taken in by our McGee family, he certainly may have been sent to Maryland to deal with business pertaining to the estate of Andrew McGee for his two young cousins. (I don't know when Samuel was born, but John, Jr. was born in 1763, and would still have been a minor in 1777.)

My own theory (and it's just a theory) is that the McGee lady who died on the ocean crossing, was buried at sea "and the whales ate her," as the story goes (sharks perhaps?), was actually John's mother, and not his wife. I think it is in Rev. Eli Carruthers' 1850s era book "The Old North State in 1776" (though I can't seem to lay my hands on my copy of the book at the moment) that it states that John McGee and his father came to this country together, that they were members of the Church of England, and John was a commissioned officer in the British army. I've often wondered if this was another case of a misplaced generation, and if it could have been his father who was the British army officer. While many sources, myself included, refer to our John McGee as "Colonel," the only evidence I've ever seen of any rank he obtained was his being appointed a captain in the NC militia in 1755.

The will of Andrew McGee (written 27 Feb. 1773, and probated 17 March 1773, Dorchester Co., Maryland) mentions his brother John of (then) Guilford Co., NC, and three brothers still living in Ireland: William, Alexander and Joseph. My own theory is that the parents and John and Andrew (and possibly James?) came to America, leaving older (or younger) children in Ireland...and the mother died on the sea crossing. (There are two possible explanations for the leaving of children in Ireland.... that they were older and already established... or that they were younger and left there so they could receive a better education than was then available in America). I am guessing (and a lot of this is just guessing) that the McGees first settled in Maryland, and then John came to NC, and applied for land grants in Andrew's name, as well, but Andrew remained in Maryland.

As to whether they were Scots-Irish or actually Irish in origin, I do not know. I'd always assumed that they were Scots, as John left property to the Presbyterian Society in his will.... but this could very well have been the influence of his second wife, your Martha "Mattie" McFarlane, who, by all accounts, was a very staunch Presbyterian. (They claim that when her son John became a Methodist minister, she contemplated disowning him.) Interestingly, I've just recently discovered that another of John & Mattie's children appears to have had ties to the Methodist Church, as well. Susanna McGee (1761-1843) who married Elisha Mendenhall (I think he was a Quaker), on dying childless, left a considerable bequest to Greensboro College, a school for women built by the Methodist Church. In fact, they were able to build a building to house the school because of her bequest... so I expect she was a Methodist, as well.

But back to John McGee's father. While I have seen those computer sources that state that both his father and grandfather were named Henry, I find this doubtful. John didn't name a son Henry, nor, as far as I know, did any of his children have a son named Henry. The name Samuel, however, does keep cropping up! John named his sons Samuel, John, William and Andrew, and his daughters Ann (Nancy, I've learned was a nickname for Ann in that era), Jane/Jean and Susanna. It's interesting to note that Ann/Nancy's first born son was named Samuel & your William named a son Samuel, as well. Could this have been for their grandfather? If I had to make a guess, I'd bet that our John McGee's parents were named Samuel and either Jane or Susannah.

My Ann "Nancy" McGee (1753/4-1832) married Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1801), as his second wife in 1772. By his first wife, Elizabeth Mebane, Robert had two children, Elizabeth, who died young, and John A. Lindsay (1767-1828, m. Elizabeth Wilson). The children of Robert Lindsay and Ann McGee were: Samuel Lindsay (c.1773/5-1813/4, m. Henrietta E. Causey), Robert Lindsay, Jr. (1776-1818, m. Letitia Harper), William Lindsay (c.1777-1841, m. Elisabeth Briggs, my line), Jane Lindsay (c.1779-1827, m. Jesse Hargrave), Elizabeth Lindsay (c.1784-1825, m. Rev. Samuel Craighead Caldwell), Andrew Lindsay (1786-1844, m. Elizabeth Dick), Susannah Lindsay (1789-1857, m. Dr. Joseph Wood) and David Lindsay (1793-1860, m. Sarah Dillon).

William Lindsay and Elisabeth Briggs (c.1784-1871) had eight children: Guilianna L. (probably Lucetta) Lindsay (1807-1885, m. Elswick S. Field, my line), William Pinkney Lindsay (c.1809-1880, m. Charity Beeson), Dr. Robert C. Lindsay (1811-1868, m. Emily P. Doak), Nancy Lavinia Lindsay (c. 1813-bef.1856, m. Milton H. Saunders), John Henry Lindsay (c.1815/20-aft.1869, m. Lucy Ann Bell), Amanda P. Lindsay (1820-1884, m. 1st James Neely Ross, 2nd Joseph Armfield), Sarah S. Lindsay (1822-1910, m. William Penn Henley) and Dr. Andrew D. (probably David) Lindsay (1829-1892, m. 1st Emily Corinne McGee, 2nd Arcelia Kerner).

Guilianna L. Lindsay and Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867, son of Jeremiah Field and Eleanor Sherwood) were married in 1831, and they had eight children: Martha Eliza Field (1833-1844, died in Greensboro), Elizabeth Eleanor Field (c.1834/5-aft.1860, was graduated from Greensboro College in 1850, I can't find her after the 1860 census), William B. (probably Benton) Field (1836-1865, Lieut., First NC Cavalry, died in Gaston Co.), Susan Lavinia Field (1838-1904, m. Augustus H. S. Beard, lived at Kernersville, NC), Robert Henry Field (1840-1911, m. Amanda R. Bisanar, lived at Charlotte, NC), Thomas Elswick Field (1843-1912, m. Lillie Caroline Wilson, lived at Hickory, NC), John Andrew Field (1846-1883, m. Mary Adeline Wilkinson, lived at Cabarrus Co., NC, my line) and Frances Guilianna "Fannie" Field (1851-1919, m. Lewis Erwin Griffith, lived at Kernersville).

And, yes, I realize that Henry was used as a middle name in the last two generations...but I believe this was probably in honor of Henry Humphreys (1790-1840) who was closely associated with my Lindsay and Field families. After the death of Robert Lindsay, Jr. in 1818, his widow, Letitia Harper Lindsay, married Mr. Humphreys. Mr. Humphreys built the Mt. Hecla mill, the first steam powered cotton mill in the South, at Greensboro around 1830. Elswick Field was superintendent of this mill for many years. After Mr. Humphrey's death, it was inherited by his son in law, Thomas Randolph Tate. In 1850, Mr. Tate determined to move the mill to Gaston Co., where it could be powered by water from the Catawba River. Elswick Field superintended the construction and running of the new mill at Mountain Island. He was later superintendent of the Morehead cotton mill at Leaksville, Rockingham Co., NC, owned by Governor John Motley Morehead, who was married to one of Guilianna Lindsay's first !
 cousins.

Well, I've probably told you a great deal more than you ever wanted to know about the Lindsay and Field families. I look forward to learning more about your branch of the McGee family tree. I've read that Rev. William McGee, a Presbyterian minister, and his brother Rev. John McGee, a Methodist, were very influential in a great religious revival that swept across Tennessee in the early 1800s. They must have been quite remarkable men.

Best Regards,

John (John Field Pankow)

Our connection to the McGEE surname was Matilda McGEE, born about 1838 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Matilda married Willis CROUCH, born 02 June 1834, on 05 April 1866. Matilda's father was William McGEE, born about 1797. All we have for her mother is the name Jane, born about 1800. We have siblings of Matilda, but no further generations.

John,
My husband's earliest relative was Major Thomas McGee.  He was born in Co. Antrim, Ireland, about 1760.  He came to North Carolina about 1771 and we assume he came with family.

No one has been able to find who his parents were, but there are some names that are possibilities as being siblings including a Daniel.  Thomas  was a major in the Revolutionary War.  This may not help you, but I thought I would send it.

4gmother were Patrick Stuart McGee and Mary Elizabeth Speer.

In 1812 they lived in Burke County North Carolina, near and probably
attended the same Methodist church, as the 3gfather Hiram Kelly family
(father so far unknown) who married Mary McGee in 1812 - 14.

They had four children in Burke County, then grandparents McGee and the
Kelly's around 1822 moved to Habersham County, Georgia.

Looking for where McGee and Speer were born (rumor SC), when, when married,
and whom their four parents were. Of some importance too......is Speer a
German name?

I have the book called "Lost Family, Lost Cause" about the McGee family in
Wayne Co MO during the Civil War. It was written by Ivan McKee whose
grandfather McKee married a McGee. I don't know if the book is still
available, but I will be glad to do a lookup in the book. It is about the
family of Thomas Jefferson McGee who came to what is now MO in 1810 form
Lincoln Co. NC. MO was then a territory. I have not yet tied them to my
McGee family. This book is about the atrocities done to the McGee family by
the Union Troops. It is a well documented book. Linda Crawford

Anything is possible.....a McGee daughter naming a son or daughter with middle name Kelly

I'll compare my data with yours and see if there are any more coincidences.

What do you want to know about McGees from Randolph County, NC? I have some information.

My 6th great grandfather was Colonel John McGee, who died in Guilfrod County, NC in 1773. The area where he lived became Randolph County in 1779. (North Carolina records can get very confusing because of the creation of new counties. This area was in Anson County in 1750, in Orange after 1752, Guilford in 1771, and finally Randolph in 1779.)

John McGee married twice. His first wife's name is not known (but I am working on it). By this marriage, he had two children: Samuel, who married Rebeca Busick, and died between 1808-1810, and Nancy (Ann) McGee (1753/4-1832) who married Judge Robert Lindsay. (They are my ancestors.)

John McGee's second wife was Martha McFarlane (1735-1820). They had five children: Jean, or Jane (1760-1835, m. John Welborn), Susannah (1761-1843, m. Elisha Mendenhall), John (1763-1837, m. Martha Johnston), William McGee (1768-1817, m. Anna King), Andrew McGee (m. Esther McMinn).

Hope this helps.

Hiram Kelly is listed in the 1830 Habersham County Georgia Census on the page following following the McGee’s.  I’ll extract the census information from Ancesty.com this evening. Some of the names in this message are found on Family Search.

I found a James McGee born in Ireland with a daughter named Rebecca born in Burke County, GA.

The IGI has the 24 Feb 1825 marriage  of Anna Magee and Abel Anderson in Habersham, GA

Ancestry.com  Georgia Death Records  shows the 25 Dec 1946 death of an Abel Ancerson in Cherokee County, possibly a decendant of  Anna and Abel Anderson.

The IGI file has Hiram Kellys from 1845 through 1978.  Some I recognize, some possible, but it is going to take some serious research time to sort through.

My current project is to trace the families listed in my database in through the census.  Ancestry has not indexed all the census as yet.  I have some information in my notes and some I’ll just have to read the census.  It is only time, right, but if you have any state, county, page numbers etc. send them along to speed up the process.

I'll report later.

Hiram, his second wife and their children, and Joshua and Sarah Ellis were living in Forsyth county in 1850.
Joseph, Benjamin, and Andrew were residing in Cherokee county in 1850.

Hiram, Joseph, and Jesse Kelly and Josuha Ellis were in the 1860 Census in AR. I have not found the McGee's after the 1830 Census, but I have not spent a great deal of time searching for them.

Subject: Re: Richards in GA Census

Don,
I did a quick check on the Heritage Quest connection through the Sonoma County Library and did not find more information. I'm working my way through the stuff I copied in Salt Lake and using online sources to check for related information. I don't seem to be progressing very far getting the stack of papers off the desk and into the file cabinet.

The Sonoma County Library has subscribed to Heritage Quest online. I can access it at home by keying in the bar code from my library card. They do not have all the census posted yet but they have done a great job with the ones they have posted. They are much easier to read than either film or Ancestry. I have not had time to check through the books they have posted.

You might check if a library in your area has subscribed to Heritage Quest. I understand it is expensive, but it certainly expands the research opportunities for the library patrons.

I'll let you know if I see anything else of interest. I have been working on Joseph Kelly's inlaws and that has been very productive. I'm trying to get everything entered before I leave for my Johnston Family Reunion in Texas. I'll go to AR after the reunion and spend some time doing research there. I'm anxious to follow up on my discovery of the two Malinda Kellys. I only found the family in 1870.

My list of things to do keeps growing. I think I'll need another life time to work through it all.

Sounds like Jessie's Father in law and family. His wife I believe was Elizabeth Richards if I correctly recall. This is more names than I have seen before.

Robert Richards at age 54 (1870) was the average age of Hiram's kids.

First unconnected Richards I heard of was Jesse Richards, Methodist minister, from NC by wagon train settled 1822 in Habersham County.

He had a dau Elizabeth and a son Jesse, but In 1870 he would have likely been dead, and these people would be his children or grand children. Jesse was of course in Arkansas twenty years by 1870.

I'll bet you are having fun.

----------------------------------
