      1-103: 13 Feb. 1864, John Duncan of Nottoway Co. VA, after payment of debts and funeral expenses, lend my wife Mahala H. Duncan all my estate both real and personal for her life, then to James A. Scruggs, son of John S. Scruggs (decd) and Lucy H. Scruggs forever provided James A. Scruggs lives to age 21 years; if he dies before then, to my wife M.H. Duncan forever. Appt. wife Mahala H. Duncan executrix. Wit. Lucy H. Scruggs, Wm. Hardaway. Proved Feb. 1869 by oath of Dr. W.H. Robertson as to signature of Lucy H. Scruggs.
