C-81/82: 17 April 1828, Andrew Mateer of Allen Twp, Cumberland Co. PA, to John D. Mahan of Borough of Carlisle, Cumberland Co., and Stephen Duncan of City of Philadelphia, Esq., for $1,000 paid, sell 3 tracts of land in Rye? Twp., Perry Co., state afsd, containing in the whole 1251 acres 142 perches more or less, one of the tracts containing 423 acres and 23 perches, bounded by land surveyed in the names of John Elder, Joseph Watkins and others surveyed in the name of Samuel Laird; also one other of said tracts containing 404 acres and 49 perches bounded by lands surveyed in the names of John Godfrey, Joseph Watkins and others, surveyed in the name of William Lane; also one other of said tracts containing 444 acres and 70 perches bounded by lands surveyed in the names of John Elder, Michael Smith and others, surveyed in the name of William Crabb, containing in the whole 1251 acres 142 perches as aforesaid, more or less. The two first described tracts were taken in execution by John Carothers Esq., High Sheriff of Cumberland Co. at the suit of the executors of Andrew Galbreath Esq. decd. against Josiah Galbreath, and sold the said two tracts of land to the afsd Andrew Mateer the grantor by deed ack. in open Court in Borough of Carlisle 3 Jan. 1810, the last lot was also taken in execution by John Carothers, High Sheriff as afsd at the suit of Thomas Duncan and Even Evans Esq. against Josiah Galbreath and sold said tract of land to afsd Andrew Mateer the grantor by deed ack. in open court in Borough of Carlisle 11 Aug. 1809. PA, No.1 situated on Susquehanna River surveyed on a warrant of 1 February 1794 in the name of Mathew Lock "adoing" Sarah Jacobs and Michel Smith & Co. "estan" 291 acres 8 perches and allowance; No.2 surveyed and a warrant dated the same day in the name of Michael Simpson contains 410 acres and 4 perches above & adj. on Shearman's Creek; No.3 surveyed on a warrant same date in the name of Adam Harbison contains 403 acres and 4 perches above and adj. Shearman's Creek; No.4 surveyed on a warrant of same date in the name of John Godfrey above & adj. parts on Shearman's Creek and adj. John Kennedy & Samuel Graham, contains 414 acres and 95 perches; No.5 surveyed on a warrant of same date above and adjoining Shearman's Creek partly in the name of John Kelso contains 431 acres and 101 perches; No.6 surveyed on a warrant of the same date in the name of Joseph Kelso above & adj. contains 407 acres and 64 perches with the "usul" allowance of 6% for roads & highways, in all the said part six tracts of land and one tract of same surveyed in an application dated Aug. 20, 1766 surveyed in the name of Mark Heiling bounded by Sherman's Creek on the south contains 30 acres and 116 perches & allowance, together also with all and singular the buildings and improvements, ... and appurtenances ... and the reversions and remainders, ... whatsoever the said Thomas Duncan & Martha his wife to the same, to have and hold the said 7 tracts of land to the said Stephen Duncan ... and Thomas Duncan ... warrants [title]. /s/ Thos. D-361/362: Article of Agreement 13 July 1831, between Stephen Duncan and John D. Mahan of Cumberland Co. PA of the one part and David N. Mahon of same county & state of the other part; that Stephen Duncan and John D. Mahon for $20,000 (two thousand six hundred and sixty six dollars and sixty six cents already received by them from the said David N. Mahan and do acquit him from all claims by reason thereof, and the balance of said twenty thousand dollars to be paid as hereinafter set forth), and they promise with the said David N. Mahan that they the said John and Stephen will convey to said David N. Mahan an undivided 1/3 part of "Duncanon forge" situate in Perry Co. and all the lands, privileges and hereditaments thereunto belonging; also an undivided 1/3 part of the farm in Perry Co. purchased by said Duncan and Mahan from Robert Clark with the mill and distillery thereon erected; also an undivided third part of the lands and furnace site purchased by the same from ---- Ickes; and an undivided third part of Chestnut Grove furnace in Adams Co. and the lands thereunto appertaining; as also of all the lands though not in this agreement specified which the said Duncan and Mahan now hold in the said counties of Perry and Adams or did hold on 27 June last, together with all appurtenances thereunto belonging or intended to be used or connected therewith; and also of all the stock implements, benefits, advantages, profits, debts, claims, demands owing to the same or in any wise connected with the carrying on and working of the said forge furnace mill distillery & so far as the said Duncan and Mahan are now or were interested on the said 27 June last as partners or owners therein by whatsoever name, description or title the same may be held or claimed, it being the intention of the parties hereto to vest in the said David N. Mahan an undivided third part of all the interest, real, personal and mixed of the said Stephen Duncan and John D. Mahan in the said real and personal estate and in the debts, claims and demands due and owing to the said Duncan and Mahan for or by reason of said forge, furnace, mill, distillery &c ... as if the said D.N. Mahan had been jointly concerned with them from the commencement of their interest ... said David is not to be liable for debts due from and by the said Duncan and Mahan for and on account of the real and personal estate afsd ... and the said David N. Mahan in consideration of the premises ... agrees that he will pay in addition to the said sum of $2,666.66 already paid, the further sum of $17,333.33, the balance of the $20,000 aforesaid according to the terms of the article of partnership this day entered into by the said Stephen Duncan, John D. Mahan and David N. Mahan, which as to the payment ... said David shall pay each and every year out of the whole amount of the net proceeds of his share of the property, to him by Duncan and Mahan according to this agreement until the same is paid, but the said David is not bound to pay for and on account of said balance due Duncan and Mahan in any one year a greater amount or any thing beyond the amount of the net proceeds of his share (more not copied here). /s/ Stephen Duncan, John D. Mahon by deed 16 April 1829, the tract of mountain land conveyed to same by Andrew Mater by deed 27 April 1828, the tract of land in Wheatfield Twp, Perry Co. conveyed to same by John Blair by deed 31 March 1830 and also all his interest in the undivided half of a tract of land conveyed to Stephen Duncan and John D. Mahon by Jonas Ickes in Tyrone Twp, Perry Co., by deed 5 Sept. 1827, and all the interest of the said John D. Mahon in the personal affects and stock used, belonging or in any way connected with the iron works in Perry Co. of every description, and all his interest in any debt, claim, or demand now due or to accrue to the firm of Duncan & Mahon, together with all buildings, improvements, ... and appurtenances, of him the said John D. Mahon by the Sheriff of Adams Co. and subsequently conveyed to Stephen Duncan by deed 8th? Sept. 1832, the land purchased from William Plank on which the Furnace is located, the tract of land purchased from Conrad Warner on which the ore bank is situated, the land conveyed by John L. Fuller and wife to Duncan & Mahon, and in all the land which were jointly held by Duncan & Mahon and which by deed 1 Sept. 1832 were conveyed to Stephen Duncan, and also 1/4 of all his interest in all the personal property of said Stephen Duncan connected with or in any wise appertaining to Duncannon Forge in Perry Co. and Chestnut Grove Furnace in Adams Co., including every description of stock, cord, wood and personal effects whatever, together with all buildings, improvements, ... and appurtenances, and also all the estate ... of the said Stephen Duncan and Louisa P. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.

Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.703: Harris Twp. Samuel M. Ickes, son of Jonas and Mary (Duncan) Ickes, born Perry Co. PA, March 12, 1836. His father, who is still living, was born in Montgomery Co. PA, Feb. 3, 1793. He tells us the name Ickes was formerly Ecke, a Saxon word, meaning a corner. Mr. I. erected Bloomfield Academy, Perry Co... son Samuel was educated in this institution. Our subject moved to Warren Co. IL in 1856, to Knox Co. in 1864, and came to this county in 1872. He married Jan. 13, 1859 to Miss Elizabeth J. McCartney ....

Pg.142: S. Finley Duncan, DDS; Dentist of Joliet. Opened office in Joliet in 1888; retained former patrons at Wilmington as well as gained new ones. First member of this branch of Duncan family in America was James Duncan, who came from Scotland and settled in Perry Co. PA. His son, Samuel, was born in PA where he followed miller's trade in early life. In 1854 to IN, first in county adjoining Henry Co. to which he subsequently removed. Rented grist and sawmill, later bought the property. Republican, Methodist. Died 1895 age 85 years. Twice married, by first wife (unnamed) had four daughters, one of whom, Hannah J. Duncan, survives; by second wife, Margaret Duffy of OH, had five children, four of whom attained mature years: Davidson D. engaged in milling at old homestead; John Wesley died in infancy; Beverly W., business man of Markle, IN; Joseph Trimble, farmer & stock raiser of Henry Co. IN; and S. Finley of this sketch. In Knightstown, IN, near where Dr. Duncan was born Dec. 1, 1856, he received his education and grew up; took up study of dentistry at age 18 ... Feb. 1879 came to Will Co. Presbyterian Church. Married on Oct. 18, 1881, to Louise, daughter of Bryan Fisher of Wilmington; two chidren: Margaret Louise and Hubert Fisher.

Pg.508: Jefferson Co., Valley Falls, Delaware Twp. JAMES F. DUNCAN, farmer, Section 3, P.O. Valley Falls, is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in Perry County, September 17, 1834. When two years of age removed with parents to Maryland, afterwards to West Virginia, and eventually to Illinois. In after years was a resident of Iowa for a time, agricultural pursuits being his vocation in life. August 9, 1862, he enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Twelfth Illinois Volunteer Infantry; participated in twenty-four open field engagements; among these were Franklin, Nashville, Atlanta, Lost Mountain and Rocky Face. Served until June 20, 1865, and was honorably discharged. Mr. Duncan came to Kansas in 1872. He is one among the substantial farmers of Jefferson County. He was married in Illinois to Miss Sarah J. Miller, a native of that State. By the union they have three children -- C.W., A.F. and E.E. (MAD: married Henry Co. IL; 1870 Greene Co. IA census)
