OBITUARY NOTES. ALEXANDER DUNCAN, the father of WILLIAM DUNCAN of this city, died yesterday at North House, Putney, near London, England, aged eighty-five years. He was a native of Scotland, but emigrated to this country in 1821, when only sixteen years of age. Soon after he entered Yale College, and after graduating became naturalized and went to reside at Canandaigua, N.Y., where he took up the practice of law. He married in 1827 SARAH BUTLER of Providence, who died Dec. 26, 1888, aged eighty-three years. For the past thirty years most of his time has been spent in England, although he made yearly visits to the United States. He was a Democrat in politics and, although a member of the Peace Conference before the war, was a firm supporter of the war for the preservation of the Union. He leaves three surviving children. (MAD: Providence, RI; New York, NY)

"New York Times" New York, New York, 16 Jun 1891 (from Kathy D. Cawley 10/2006)
OBITUARY. DAVID DUNCAN. DAVID DUNCAN, the senior member of the old firm of JOHN DUNCAN's Sons, importing grocers of 48 Park Place, died early yesterday morning of heart failure at his Summer house, Seabright, N.J. MR. DUNCAN was born in Scotland in 1819 and was brought to this country when only a few months old by his father, JOHN DUNCAN, who established in that year the firm which has since borne his name at Broadway, near Lispenard Street, which at that early period was regarded as being very far up town. The spot is now occupied by the Ninth National Bank.
The history of DAVID DUNCAN's life subsequent to his early education is identified with the history of the firm. The retail branch of the business was early removed to Union Square, where it remained a conspicuous landmark for forty years or more. About four years ago the retail business was discontinued, and the wholesale branch was given the entire attention of the firm. It now occupies the very ground that was covered by Columbia College during the first half century of the firms existence.
MR. DUNCAN was a person of quiet tastes and a retiring disposition. He was never married and lived with his brother, JOHN P. DUNCAN, who survives him, at 8 West Sixtsecond Street. He was a constant attendant at Dr. John Hall's church, of which he was for many years a member. The funeral services will be held privately at his late home in this city, and the interment will take place in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
