1878 "The Biographical encyclopaedia of Kentucky of the dead and living men of the nineteenth century" pub. by J.M. Armstrong (from Evelyn Sigler 11/1984; FHL book 976.9 D3b)
      Pg.692: Hon. James R. Duncan, M.D., physician and surgeon, born Nov. 1, 1815 in Logan Co. KY. Parents were natives of Culpeper Co. VA. Father was farmer in Logan Co. since 1824 and is now 93 years old. His mother died Aug. 4, 1824. Graduated from Transylvania Univ. 1850, was a surgeon in Union Army, 1863 State Senator from 13th Dist. From May 1864 and three following years traveled in CA, OR, WA Territory, Idaho, Montana, returned to KY; a Missionary Baptist, Mason; married May 8, 1845 Catherine Dunn of Allen Co. KY. She died Oct. 15, 1855; he m. (2) Sept. 19, 1871 Elizabeth Harris of Simpson Co. KY. His only child, daughter by first marriage, is the wife of D.H. Roark, now residing in KS.

      Pg.20-1, Ballard Co. GEORGE W. HINES, born July 16, 1823 in Logan Co. KY where he was reared, and in 1856 came to Ballard Co. where he still retains his residence. His father, John Hines, a native of Halifax Co. VA, died in 1879 at the age of 83 years. He was the son of Edwin Hines of VA, a Rev. soldier who died about 1835. Subject's mother, Ann Duncan, was born near Lexington [Fayette Co.], KY. John Hines was twice married, and to him, by his first wife (unnamed) were born Mary (Daniel), James D., John and Bersheba (Mills). His offspring resulting from his espousal of Miss Ann Duncan are our subject, Preston A., Elizabeth (Duvall), Dr. Daniel C., Samuel G., Julia A. (Herrington), Jane (Riley), Lucy (Bailey), and Joseph C. On May 9, 1845, subject was married to Miss Frances K. (born in 1825), dau. of George and Patty (Rice) Bailey, of Logan Co. KY ...
      Pg.190 (pg.300), Paducah and McCracken Co. SAMUEL G. HINES, McCracken Co., is a native of Logan Co., this State, was born December 8, 1838, and is a son of John Hines, who was originally from VA, but came to KY with his parents when a young man, locating in Logan Co. where he resided most of his life on a farm. A few years preceding his death, he went to live with his son in Ballard Co. KY, and there departed this life at the age of 82 years. His wife, formerly a Miss Ann Duncan, died a short time before her husband. They had eleven children. Our subject ... age 21 in Logan Co., in 1870 to Ballard Co., 12 years, then to present farm in McCracken Co., retaining the Ballard farm. Twice married, his first wife having formerly been a Miss Frances Miller of Logan Co., three children, one of whom, Joseph, now living; second wife was Miss Alice Bacon of McCracken Co., three children, Cordelia, George and Samuel G.

      Pg.35, Butler Co. JOSEPH W. McREYNOLDS, Butler Co., was born Oct. 14, 1845, in Logan Co. KY, son of William T. and Nancy A. (Stroud) McReynolds, he a native of VA b. April 1797. At age 2 years, W.T. was brought by his parents to KY, locating in Logan Co. where he died April 25, 1871; Nancy A. was born Jan. 2, 1802, and died June 10, 1863. She was the mother of the following children: William S., James A., Thomas B., Belle, Sarah C., Presley M., Mary A., Mattie T. and Joseph W. Belle married Porter, and afterward Simmons; Sarah married Duncan; Mary also married a Duncan, and Mattie married a Brown. Joseph W. ... married April 15, 1869, to Mary S., dau. of Foster and Dolly (Gibbs) Gupton of Logan Co. who was born April 12, 1852 and died March 24, 1874; one child, Sarah Etta; he next married Sept. 5, 1877 to Salenda S., dau. of Azariah and Sarepta (Gwaltney) Sweatt, of Logan Co., born Dec. 8, 1855; two ch, Fannie G. and Jessie F. ....       Pg.93, Muhlenburgh Co. GEORGE GORDON, Muhlenburgh Co., was born Dec. 1, 1831, in Stockport, England; the eldest of nine children born to Joshua and Hester (Combs) Gordon. George Gordon sailed from England, Aug. 23, 1856; landed in NY Oct. 2, went immediately to Fall River, MA, where he took charge of 48 looms; he was a weaver. In April 1857 he moved to Perry Co. IN and took charge of 75 looms at Cannelton; remained 9 years. Jan. 11, 1862, enlisted in Co. G, 53rd IN Volunteer Infantry, commanded by W.O. Gresham; discharged as a Sergeant Dec. 1862 at St.Louis on account of disability ..., returned to Cannelton until April 1865, then went to Gallatin, TN, until July ... in 1870 to where he now resides in Central City, KY. Mr. Gordon was married July 31, 1857, to Agnes Gibson of Cannelton [Perry Co. IN], a native of Glasgow, SCT, and a dau. of Daniel and Margaret (Duncan) Gibson, natives of Cannelton and Lenox, Scotland, respectively ...

      Pg.189-90 (pg.654-5), Simpson Co. DR. GEORGE W. DUNCAN was born Jan. 26, 1826, in Simpson Co. KY, and is the tenth of 8 boys and 4 girls born to Sanford and Nancy (Hammond) Duncan. Sanford Duncan was born in Loudoun Co. VA. He was a son of Colman Duncan, who married Mary Lyne, both of Westmoreland Co. VA; was a Revolutionary soldier and immigrated to Nelson Co. KY about 1795. He was born in February, 1742, and died in April, 1823. His wife was born in March, 1749, and died in May, 1814. Colman Duncan was a son of Henry Duncan, who was born in Scotland. He with two brothers came to the United States and settled in Westmoreland Co. VA. Mrs. Nancy (Hammond) Duncan was a daughter of Job Hammond, who married Mary Stone, both of KY and of Welsh origin. He was an officer of the Revolutionary war, and was wounded in both arms in an Indian fight. Sanford Duncan came from Nelson to Logan Co. KY about 1800. In 1818 he located 5 miles south of Franklin, assisted in organizing the county of Simpson, was one of the commissioners appointed to run and locate the State line from Reelfoot Lake to the Mississippi River in 1840; was also appointed one of the commissioners to survey Simpson Co. and lay out school districts. He did all the public business in his own community, and was one of the most influential and valuable citizens in Simpson Co. He farmed extensively ... Masonic fraternity. Dr. G.W. Duncan was reared on a farm and received a good education. In 1840 he entered Cumberland College at Princeton. When the college was transferred to Lebanon he returned to Franklin and finished his education. In 1846 commenced the study of medicine ... in 1848 graduated; located and commenced practice at Mitchellville, TN. In 1859 located in Franklin, KY ... ever since. He married, September 4, 1860, Dorinda Puryar, of Smith Co. TN, a daughter of William and Mary (Pearce) Puryar, both natives of TN, of French and Scotch descent, respectively. William was a son of Daniel Puryar. To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have been born eight children, four now living: Mary Sanford, Charles A., George H. and William A.       Pgs.784-786: CHARLES B. DUNCAN. ... is a son of George W. Duncan, a prominent resident of Clay township, who was born in Logan Co. KY, February 5, 1834. George W. Duncan is a son of Benjamin and Sarah (Pendleton) Duncan, who were born in Culpeper and Fauquier counties, Virginia, respectively, the former's birth occurring on December 4, 1800. On their marriage they removed to Kentucky, where they made their home until 1837, when they moved to Sheridan Co. MO, locating two miles north of where Glasgow now is. Their stay there was brief, as they soon moved to Howard Co. MO, where they lived about four years. In 1841 they came to Saline county ... In 1844 they moved to Lafayette county, ... Tabo creek until 1847. ... in 1847 ... returned to Clay township, Saline county ....

      Pg.946-947: Drew Co. James T. Duncan, native KY, born in Logan Co. Oct. 5, 1852, his father, James G. Duncan, being also born and reared there, the former event taking place Sept. 6, 1822; father a farmer and tanner, in 1852 to AR and settled near Hamburg, in Ashley Co., 7 years; then Drew Co. until his death in 1872. Master Mason, Methodist Episcopal Church South. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah F. Tucker, was born in the Old Dominion [VA] in 1834, but was reared and educated in KY, her parents, Robert and Martha Tucker, having removed to KY in 1849. She was married in Ashley Co. in 1851, but is now residing on the old homestead in Drew Co. Her union with Mr. Duncan produced 4 sons and 4 daus: James T. and his sister Susan M. (wife of Thomas R. Henry of Drew Co.) being the only ones now living. James T. Duncan was reared in Drew Co., at age 21 a farmer. September 3, 1873, his marriage to Miss Willella Duncan took place in Drew Co. She was born in Ashley Co. AR, April 4, 1857, and is a daughter of William B. and Hester A. (Tucker) Duncan, the former of whom died in 1864. The mother is still living in Drew Co. To the subject of this sketch and his wife, 7 children: Thomas Edward, Teresa May and Sarah A. being the only ones living. The deceased are: William T., Ida, Susan E., Daniel G. Members Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

      Pg.738: Josephus Duncan, retired, Le Mars, was born in Lawrence Co. TN, Jan. 14, 1820. His parents, Melcher and Sarah Duncan, were natives of Robertson Co. TN, and Russellville, [Logan Co.] KY, respectively. His paternal grandfather, John Duncan, came from Scotland, and his maternal grandfather, John Irvin, from London, England. In the fall of 1829 our subject removed with his parents to Pike Co. MO, where he was reared on a farm and where his parents died at the respective ages of 82 and 85 years. Of their 10 children, Josephus is the 7th child. When 17 years of age, he began learning the blacksmith trade. In 1845 he went to Grant Co. WI and mined lead for 4 years. He then bought a farm, and besides tilling it worked at building. In Oct. 1861 he enlisted in Bissell's regiment of engineers, later known as the Western MO engineers; he served 18 months in the blacksmith detail and was discharged on account of injuries received in being thrown from a railroad train. He came to Le Mars [Plymouth Co.] in 1877, and after farming one year, bought a hotel, which he conducted 8 years as the Duncan house. He is a member of the Free-Will baptist church and G.A.R. and has always been a republican. In Sept. 1850 he married Hannah J., dau. of Andrew Hogle, a native of NY. They have 3 living children, viz, William James, John Colby and Melcher Jerome. George Alma, the second, died in Nov. 1881 aged 28 years.

      James T. Duncan is a native Kentuckian, born in Logan County, October 5, 1852, his father, James G. Duncan, being also born and reared there, the former event taking place September 6, 1822. The father was a farmer and tanner by occupation, and in 1852 removed to the State of Arkansas, and settled near Hamburg, in Ashley County, where he was engaged in farming for about seven years. He then opened up a farm on Bayou Bartholomew, in Drew County, which he continued to till until his death, in 1872, he was remarkably successful in his business transactions, and upon his demise left his family well provided for. He was Master Mason, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for many years, having united with the church early in life. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah F. Tucker, was born in the Old Dominion, in 1831, but was reared and educated in Kentucky, her parents, Robert and Martha Tucker, having removed to that State in 1849. She (end of page).

      Pg.303: William Florville's granddaughter, Julia C. Chaverous, born 28 April 1852 (daughter of Alseen Florville b. Dec. 1833 in Springfield, IL who married 10 March 1851 to Mahlon Chaverous). Julia C. Chaverous married 27 April 1871 to Clark Duncan who was born 5 Oct. 1850 near Russelville [Logan Co.], KY. They had 2 children: Alseen Duncan and Otis B. Duncan and lived in Springfield, IL. (MAD: Listed as "Black" on 1870 Sangamon Co. IL census)
            SM Note: "IL State Journal," Springfield, IL, 9 April 1929, page 14. DUNCAN - Funeral services for Clark Duncan will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the residence of a daughter, Mrs. S.A. Ware, 152 East Washington street. Rev. S.C. Maunel officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. R.L. Carpenter in charge.
            Note: "History & Biography of Sangamon Co. IL" 1881, in a section called The Colored People of Springfield p 741-742 has a biography of Clark Duncan. It states he was born in Logan Co. IL 15 Oct. 1848. In 1862, he enlisted in the 115th Colored Infantry, and was soon made first Sergeant in Co. B, Sixth Cavalry (col'd). He served about 2 years and was mustered out at Helena, Arkansas. He returned to Russelville, KY for 3 years. He came to
Springfield, IL and worked at the Leland Hotel, then married Julia Chavious ... Clark Duncan was the son of George Duncan who was born in Logan Co. KY and Louisa Orendoff, born in KY. Clark & Julia Duncan had 3 children: Alsee M., Otis B. & Ada L. Clark Duncan was a member of: the M.E. Church, a Knight Templar, Mason, and Senior Warden in Lodge No.3, Springfield, IL. His wife was Grand Treasurer of the Grand Court of IL. He cast his first vote for U.S. Grant, for President.

      Vol.II, pg.645: A.J. DUNCAN. Among the men who are representing their districts in offices of civic importance, ... is A.J. Duncan, the clerk and recorder of Lewis and Clark County. He has long been a leader in the local ranks of the democratic party, ... Mr. Duncan, who was born at Oak Grove in Jackson County, Missouri, in December, 1876, traces descent in the paternal line to Scotland, but during colonial times the family became established in the South, as did also his family on the maternal side, who were originally from England. The father of A.J. Duncan was Robert Duncan, born in November, 1834, near Frankfort, Kentucky, and died at Helena, Montana, in October, 1918. The parents of Robert Duncan removed to Jackson County, Missouri, as early as 1840, where they were among the pioneers, and where A.T. Duncan, the grandfather of A.J., was a farmer for many years. He died there shortly before the birth of his grandson. He had served in the campaign against the Indians. His wife bore the maiden name of Elizabeth Bywaters, and both she and her husband were born in Kentucky. (MAD: Helena, Lewis and Clark Co. MT; see Logan Co. KY)
            Robert W. Duncan, a son of these Missouri pioneers, was reared, educated and married in Jackson County, and there for many years he followed farming. In April, 1883, he came to Montana and located in the Prickly Pear Valley near Helena, where he resumed his farming operations and became one of the community's influential citizens. He finally retired from an active life and moved into Helena in 1900, where for eighteen years or until his death he lived in the enjoyment of the rewards of former toil. In 1854, during the days of the California gold excitement, he crossed the plains to that state and spent about eight years in placer mining, returning then to his home in Jackson County, Missouri. He upheld the principles and policies of the democratic party, was a devout and consistent member of the Baptist Church, and for many years enjoyed affiliations with the Masonic fraternity. He joined the order when but twenty-one years of age, ... When trouble arose between the North and South he enlisted for service in 1862 in the Confederate cause, ... been taken prisoner and later exchanged.
            In his early life Robert W. Duncan married Maria Joyce, who survives him and resides at Helena. She was born in Missouri in April, 1843. The following children were born to this union: J.M., a rancher in Richland County, Montana; Effie B., the wife of Thomas Matthews, who came to Montana with the pioneers of the '60s, and is now a retired rancher living at Bozeman; J.F., who is engaged in ranching in Richland County, Montana, near his brother J.M.; Eldridge Hill, who died during his youth; Eugene Herbert, who also died when young; A.J., of Helena; Lilborn, who died when young; Lula, the wife of Charles Grant, a merchant at Condon, Oregon; and Leona C., who resides with her mother in Helena, where she is serving as the deputy county clerk and recorder. During 1913 and 1916 she served as the county superintendent of schools for Sanders County.
            After training in the rural schools of Lewis and Clark County, A.J. Duncan entered the Montana Wesleyan University in Prickly Pear Valley, now known as the Montana Wesleyan College of Helena, where he spent about four years. After attaining his twenty-fourth year he left his father's ranch and came to Helena and was appointed deputy clerk and recorder of Lewis and Clark County in February, 1901. He filled that position for five years, or until the spring of 1906, when he was elected the city treasurer, ... and two years later in 1908 was reelected ... and served for four years. In the fall of 1910 he was defeated ... and then engaged in the real estate business. In November, 1912, Mr. Duncan was elected the clerk and recorder of Lewis and Clary County, ... and during the years of 1914-16-18 was returned to the office and is the present incumbent ...
            The home of Mr. Duncan is at 701 Sixth Avenue, Helena. He was married in 1905, in Bozeman, Montana, to Miss Esther Gullic, a daughter of F.B. and Martha (Wallis) Gullic. The father, who was a mine operator in California, died in that state, and the mother is now living in Helena. The two children of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are Maria, born in April, 1907, and Robert Wallace, born in June, 1910. ...

      Pg.776: Harvey Co., Newton. J.R. DUNCAN, M.D., was born in Logan County, Ky., six miles south of Russellville, November 1, 1815. In the spring of 1836 he came to Jackson County, Mo., remaining until the spring of 1840, and coming into Kansas in 1837 (MAD: dates as given), with the Missouri State Volunteers to drive the Osages from the western border of Missouri; while in Missouri he read medicine about one year in Glasgow and then returned to Kentucky to complete his medical education. He studied with Dr. A.S. Walker, of Scottville, Allen Co., Ky., and graduated from the medical department of the Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky. In January, 1845, he commenced practice at Jimtown, Monroe Co., Ky., where he remained until the fall of 1861, when he entered the army as a surgeon in the Ninth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, United States Army. He resigned his commission in February, 1862, and was subsequently with the Fourteenth Illinois Cavalry, Fifth Indiana Cavalry, Thirteenth Kentucky Infantry, and Thirty-seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He was mustered out December 29, 1864, and remained at Louisville until June 2, 1865. In August, 1863, he was elected State Senator from the Thirteenth Senatorial District, composed of Allen, Simpson and Monroe counties, having had assurances from the Secretary of War that he should be granted leave of absence to attend the sessions of the Legislature. He went to San Francisco June 2, 1864, and spent the three succeeding years west of the Rocky Mountains, but did not permanently locate anywhere. In April, 1868, he returned to Franklin, Simpson Co., Ky., and engaged in active practice until he came came (MAD: sic) to Newton in May, 1880. He was married in Allen County, Ky., May 8, 1845, to Catharine Dunn, a native of that county. Mrs. Duncan died October 15, 1855, leaving one child - Margaret Elizabeth, now Mrs. D.H. Roark, a resident of Harper County, Kan. He was married September 19, 1871, in Simpson County, Ky., to Elizabeth Harris, his present wife, a native of Simpson County, Ky. Dr. Duncan is Chairman of the Board of Examining Surgeons for Pensioners, Harvey County, Kan., a member of the Baptist Church, and also of the order of A.F. & A.M., Blue Lodge, Chapter Council and Commandery.
