A-56-57: At a court called and held for the examination of Peter Duncan, labourer, on Tuesday the 8th day of March, 1803, charged with having feloneously taken, stolen, and carried away a silver watch and two fine tooth combs of the value of fourteen pounds nine shillings the property of Nicholas Purkins merchant of the town of Columbia on the night of the 26th day of February 1803 ... (3 justices present) ... prisoner said he was in no wise guilty, witnesses sworn, court found prisoner guilty, he to be tried for same before Judges of the Circuit Court of Adair Co. in May next. B-147: Monday, Oct. 2, 1809, ordered that clerk of court bind to Marshal Duncan, William and James Thrasher, infant children of Rachel Thrasher of age of 2 years and 4 months and 22 days, to live and dwell with said Duncan until they arrive at age 21 years, said Duncan agreeing to learn and teach them during their survitude the art and mystery of the hatters trade ... D-51: Court Monday, 7 Sept. 1818; ordered that the Clerk of the Court alter the list of taxable property given in this year in the name of James Duncan from 165 to 365 acres of land.
D-216 to 217: Court Tuesday, 6 Feb. 1821; On this 6th day of February 1821 personally appeared in open Court being a court of record proceeding according to the course of the common law for the said County, John Duncan aged about 66 years resident in said County, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war, as stated in his original declaration of the 5th of October 1818 and his additional declaration of the 4th of October 1819 hereto annexed, that he has received no pension from the government.
I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 13th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property, or any part thereof, with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts, or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. To wit, one horse beast worth $20 and no more; one cow & calf worth $10 and no more; one sow and pigs worth $4 and no more; one oven & kettle and other articles of furniture worth $10 and no more, amounting in the whole to $44. His occupation is a tiller of the ground and he is illy able to pursue it. His wife is about 48 years of age named Ann, sickly & unable to labour, subject to various complaints, he has residing with him one daughter named Nancy about 18 years of age, one son about 17 years of age "named named" David, one daughter named Cassey about 13 years of age, one son named Peter about 12 years of age, one daughter named Polly about 8 years of age. It is the opinion of the court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is $44.
D-345: Court Monday, 3 Feb. 1823; ordered that James Duncan be "survey" of that precinct of the public highway of which Lewis Martin was surveyor and that the hands assist said Duncan in keeping said road in repair who assisted said Martin.

Born June 10, 1755, Pittsylvania Co. VA; d. May 3, 1844, Jackson Co. AL. Applied 1834 in Jackson Co. AL; enlisted early 1776 in Camden [Co.], SC, under Gen. Lincoln, Col. Thompson, Maj. Perdue, Capt. Hopkins, served 18 months; volunteered again under Gen. Morgan, Col. Shelby, Capt. Small in VA and served 6 months; entered again under Col. Preston and Capt. Chadwell for 3 months; entered again under Pickens, Col. Anderson, Capt. Key; age in father's family bible burned with house shortly after war before he married; lived in Camden Dist. SC about 10 years after end of war; moved to Hawkins Co. TN; then to Greene (now Adair) Co. KY; then to Jackson Co. AL. Married 1780-81 Ann, who d. Nov. 23, 1846. Witnesses Rev. Steven Donathan and Jesse McElyea of Jackson Co. AL. Listed in 1841 census of pensioners age 83, Jackson Co. AL residing with Robert Duncan. Affidavit of Peter Duncan and David Chadwell 20 Feb. 1835 in Jackson Co. AL re service. Deposition of brother Peter Duncan of Marshall Co. AL on 8 April 1843, age ca 77; home in Hawkins Co. TN burned 47-48 years before; Peter age 10-11 when John entered service, age ca 13 when discharged. Deposition of Greenbury Middleton 27/29 March 1843, age ca 1868, of Jackson Co. AL; knew John Duncan ca 40 years ago in Adair Co. KY. Deposition by Absalom Coffee on 28 March 1843, age ca 55, knew John more than 20 years, later 30 years; mentions John and aged wife. Witnesses Daniel M. Martin and Philip Henry Armbruster. Deposition by John Duncan on 30 Sept. 1843, age ca 88.
Children: David, Robert, Peter. There were other children but all died before their parents. Aug. 17, 1854, Absolum Coffee testified his wife Jane was a granddau. of John Duncan. William Duncan of Jackson Co. AL filed power of attorney 9 June 1854. Deposition by Absalom Coffee, adm. of estate, that when Ann d. 23 Nov. 1846 she left survivors David, Robert and Peter her only legal heirs; since her death David and Robert are both dead.

Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.758-60: T.S. DUNCAN ... was born in Salisbury, May 31, 1854, and is a son of William T.H. Duncan, a native of Adair Co. KY. His grandfather, Marshall Duncan, also a native of that State, was a hatter by trade and with his wife and two children, W.T.H. and James, who were twin brothers, emigrated to IL, locating in what was then Menard Co., but is now part of Sangamon County. ... He was accompanied to his new home in the West by his father, James Duncan, who was a representative of one of the first families of Virginia. Both gentlemen died in Salisbury Township.
William T.H. Duncan, father of our subject, was a young man when his parents came to IL. .... In 1831 he married Eve Miller .... He died in Salisbury in 1861, at the age of 55 years. The wife of William T.H. Duncan, and the mother of our subject, was born in Adair Co. KY, December 11, 1813, and was a daughter of Solomon Miller, who was also a native of KY, where his boyhood days were spent. He married in that State and with his family came to IL in 1820 ... In the Miller family there are ten children, of whom the youngest is 58 years of age. Only one death has occurred among the number. The eldest Barbara, is now Mrs. Buchanan, of Springfield; Eve, mother of our subject, is the second in order of birth ...
Pg.251-2: NATHAN C. ANTLE .... The ancestral home was in KY, and there the Rev. John Antle, grandfather of our subject, was born and lived for many years. ... In 1829 he came with his family to this State, ... Henry Antle, father of our subject, was born in Cumberland Co. KY, September 11, 1813. He came to this State when sixteen years old ... The mother of our subject was born in St. Clair Co., this State, January 25, 1820, and bore the maiden name of Nancy Duncan. Her father, Rice Duncan, a native of South Carolina and a schoolteacher in his earlier years, was one of the early settlers in St. Clair Co., this State.

Pg.270: DUNCAN, RICE, was born Mar. 5, 1781, in North Carolina. He was brother to Marshal and John. When young his father's family moved to Cumberland Co. KY. He was there married to Barbara Antle. They had four children, and Mrs. D. died. He married Luranah Rutherford. They brought one child from Kentucky to St. Clair county, where they had five children, and moved to Morgan, and then to Sangamon county, arriving Oct., 1837, in what is now Salisbury. Mrs. Luranah Duncan, died May 29, 1862, and Rice Duncan died Oct. 7, 1863, both in Salisbury township.
Pg.270-1: DUNCAN, MARSHAL, was born in 1783 or 4, in North Carolina. He was brother to Rice and John. He went, when young, with his parents to Cumberland Co. KY. He left Kentucky with three children and came to Sangamon Co. IL, arrived in 1820 or 21 in Salisbury township. He was there married to Hannah Miller, a daughter of John Miller. Marshall Duncan died in Sangamon county, in the fall of 1858, and his widow resides with her children in Iowa. They had eight children.
Pg.271-2: DUNCAN, JOHN, was born in 1789, in Cumberland Co. KY. He was married there to Sally Miller, and had six children there, and moved to Sangamon Co. IL, about 1827, in what is now Salisbury township, where they had six children. Mrs. Sally Duncan died Nov., 1850, and John Duncan died in 1863, both near Salisbury. Three only of their children reside in Sangamon county.
Pg.245-6: DAVIES, JOHN, was born in Wales, and came to America when a young man. He was married in Adair Co. KY, to Catharine ANTLE. They had ten children in KY, and Mr. Davies died there about 1810. His widow moved to Sangamon county about 1826, and settled near Salisbury. Mrs. Catharine Davies died in 1846, in Salisbury. Children ... HENRY, born Oct. 30, 1805, in Cumberland Co. KY, came to Salisbury, Sangamon county, in 1828 ...
Pg.404-5: IRWIN, ROBERT S., (son of William Irwin) born Nov. 14, 1813, in Cabarras Co. NC, was married in Sangamon county, Jan. 19, 1837, to Cynthia Duncan, who was born Aug. 18, 1818, in Adair Co. KY. Mrs. Cynthia Irwin died April 6, 1872, and Robert S. Irwin died May 3, 1874, both in Salisbury township, east of the Sangamon river, and near the Iron Bridge.
Pg.84: ANTLE, REV. JOHN, was born April 15, 1789, in Cumberland Co. KY. Elizabeth Buchanan was born in Cumberland Co. PA. Her parents moved to Lincoln Co. KY, when she was seven years old. Her father died in that county, and she went to live with a married sister in Cumberland county. John Antle and Elizabeth Buchanan were there married. They had five children. The family then moved to Morgan Co. IL, in 1829, and from there to Sangamon county, arriving Jan. 9, 1830, in what is now Salisbury township. Mrs. Elizabeth Antle died Sept., 1844, and John Antle died August 30, 1864, she in Menard county and he in Salisbury.
Pg.157: BUCHANAN, REUBEN, was born March 20, 1809, in Woodford Co. KY. His father moved, in 1819 or '20, to Morgan Co. IL. Reuben remained there until 1834, when he came to Sangamon county, settling at Salisbury, where he was married to Barbara Duncan, a step-daughter of Solomon Miller. She was born March 15, 1812, in Cumberland Co. KY. Mr. Buchanan ... until his death, which occurred Nov. 14, 1861. His widow resides with her son-in-law, Lafayette Smith, in Springfield.
Pg.523: MILLER, SOLOMON, was born about 1796, in Adair Co. KY. He was married there to Nancy A. ANTLE. They had four children in Kentucky, and moved to St. Clair Co. IL, and from there to Sangamon county, arriving in the spring of 1820, at what is now Salisbury ... Mrs. Nancy A. Miller died April, 1854, and Solomon Miller married Lucinda Gard. He died in 1858, near where he settled in 1820, at Salisbury, IL. Ch.: BARBARA, born March 15, 1812, in Cumberland Co. KY, married Reuben Buchanan. See his name. EVE, born Dec. 11, 1813, in Kentucky, married in Sangamon Co. to Wm. T.H. Duncan. See his name.
