      C-190: Joseph Duncan of Fayette Co. IN, having heretofor made advancements for my beloved daughter and son, Mary Jane Dovrence? and Joseph Culbertson Duncan to the full amount that I deem just and right, the balance of my estate to be disposed of as follows: to son William Alexander Duncan and heirs the 1/4 section on which I now reside, being the NW 1/4 Sec. 6 Twp 14 Range 12, supposed to contain 183 acres. That is to say, the first encumbrance and provision is that my beloved wife Jane Duncan as my widow, for life, have the use and occupation or rents and profits as she may elect of the full and third part of the real estate, which third I give her. The second encumbrance is that in case my beloved grandson James Nelson Huston son of my deceased daughter Isabella survive until age 21, he be paid by my son William or his heirs, $500 in cash. All the rest and remainder to my wife absolutely. Appoint son William Alexander Duncan exec. 23 Aug. 1855. Wit. S.W. Parker, James C. McIntmet?. Codicil, on account of the death of my beloved wife Jane Duncan who died since the execution of my will; my son William Alexander Duncan and heirs have the said 1/4 section described in the will free from all encumbrances except in favor of my grandson James Nelson Huston. If James Nelson Huston dies, the $500 be equally divided between my three children Mary Jane Domirce? (Dovrence?), Joseph Culbertson Duncan and William Alexander Duncan or their heirs. My exec. to give over to my daughter Mary Jane Domence? if not paid sooner, a note which I have against William Devrence? and my daughter Mary Jane dated 1 Jan. 1858 for $200. The remainder to my son William Alexander Duncan. Feb. 8, 1859. Wit. James C. McIntrich?, Chas. C.C. Tate. Proved 3 July 1861.

      Pg.270: William A. Duncan, farmer, Harrison Township, native of PA, born in Franklin Co. Jan. 26, 1826. His parents, Joseph and Jane (MacNichols) Duncan, came to this State in 1850; his father, a native of PA, died May 4, 1860; his mother died Dec. 15, 1858. Our subject had very limited education. He mar. June 25, 1861, to Miss Mary Fallon, born in 1831, dau. of John and Ann (Padden) Fallen, natives of Ireland, who reside in Liberty, had following children: Joseph, Maggie, John, James (died Jan. 24, 1882), Jane (died Feb. 24, 1882). Mrs. Duncan was brought up a Catholic.

      Vol.II, pg.944-946: JOHN M. CULBERTSON, a prosperous and well known farmer residing about one mile east of Glenwood, in Orange township, Fayette county, Indiana, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 20, 1837. Mr. Culbertson is a son of John Craighead and Jane (Moody) Culbertson, both natives of Pennsylvania, the former born in Culbertson's Row, near Chambersburg, and the latter in Shippensburg. John C. Culbertson was a son of Robert Culbertson, a native of Pennsylvania, and he was a grandson of Joseph Culbertson, who emigrated from Culbertson's Row, at Ballygan, in county Antrim, Ireland, in 1743, and settled in Culbertson's Row, Franklin county, Pennsylvania. No furthe record than this has been made of Joseph Culbertson. Robert, his son, was reared in Pennsylvania and became a farmer of that state. Boiling Spring is on the farm owned by him. He attended divine worship at Middle Spring, where he is on record as having paid pew rent to the amount of seventeen shillings and sixpence. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, with official rank. He entered the service in 1776, as captain of the Fifth Battalion, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Armstrong Regiment, and was stationed at Philadelphia. ... He died in Pennsylvania, in 1801. His wife, Annie, nee Duncan, a native of Middle Springs, Pennsylvania, was born in 1755 and died in 1827. Their children were as follows: Joseph, William, Robert, Alexander, Samuel D., William, Stephen, John C., Mary, Daniel, Annie and James, all of whom reached maturity except the first named, William, who died in infancy.
      John C. Culbertson, the father of John M., was reared on his father's Pennsylvania farm, and was eighteen at the time the war of 1812 broke out. ... In 1828 he located in Cincinnati ... His wife, whose maiden name was Jane Moody, was a daughter of Rev. John Moody, minister of Middle Spring (Pennsylvania) church for a period of fifty-three years. John C. Culbertson died at Cincinnati, Ohio, April 25, 1868. Mrs. Culbertson died January 18, 1888. The children, in order of birth, of John C. and Jane Culbertson were as follows: John M., whose name introduces this sketch; Joseph A., Samuel D.; William; Robert C.; Henry Clay; Mary, wife of J.W. Few communities are favored with a more intelligent and enterprising class of citizens than Brandywine twp, Hancock Co., and of these there is no one more worthy of favorable mention than the well-known gentleman whose name introduces this article. Henry Harrison Duncan is a native of Hancock Co., born November 10, 1843, in the township of which he is now a resident. His father was Henry Duncan and the maiden name of his mother was Clarissa Cunningham, the former a native of Washington Co. VA and the latter born in Fayette Co. IN. When 21 years old Henry Duncan came to IN and after living one year in Fayette Co., settled about 1834 in Hancock Co. ....

      ALEXANDER DUNCAN, farmer, native of Stokes Co. NC; born January 29, 1815, the son of Alamanda (sic) and Susanna (Vaughn) Duncan, natives respectively of VA and NC. The father of our subject learned the occupation of shoe-making, and followed the same forty years, but after marriage he engaged in farming and so continued until his decease. Our subject worked for his father on the farm until he was united in wedlock, which event took place November 17, 1837, the bride being Sarah F. Reddick, a native of the "Old North State." To this union were granted 14 children, of whom two sons and eight daughters are living. In 1839, he moved to this State, and remained some time in Fayette Co.; then moved to Marion County, where he resided 20 years, and thence to this county, March 23, 1860, where he purchased a farm and made a home. He is now in his 70th year, ...
      HON. W.C. DUNCAN, is a son of Alexander Duncan and Sarah F. Duncan, both of whom are still living at their old home, six miles southwest of Nashville, in Brown Co. IN. Both the father and mother were born, reared and married in NC; after this marriage they removed to Indiana, settling for a time in Fayette Co.; soon thereafter they removed to Marion Co. where W.C. Duncan was born on the 24th of June, 1851, and is the 9th child in a family of fourteen children, consisting of 5 boys and 9 girls. On the 23d of March, 1860, with his father's family, he came to Brown Co. and settled upon a farm six miles southwest of Nashville. ... He commenced teaching in the common schools of the county at the age of 18 (sic), ... until the 24th of June, 1871, when ... admitted to the Freshman class in the Indiana State University at Bloomington. ... Graduating in 1875, ... (school, then teaching, then school, etc., finally into law). On July 26, 1880, he was married to Jennie Buskirk, a daughter of Michael Buskirk, now of Clay County, Ind. Two little girls -- Edith and Jessie -- have been born of this union. ... Mr. Duncan is now but 32 years of age, and few men so young have accomplished so much as he, ...

      Pg.328: Washington C. Duncan is a son of Alexander and Sarah F. Duncan, both of whom lie buried in Garland Brook cemetery at Columbus, IN. The father and mother were born, reared and mar. in NC and were of Scotch-Irish descent. After coming to IN, they lived first in Fayette Co. and then several years in Marion Co., where the subject of this sketch was born June 24, 1851. In 1860 Alexander Duncan was about to remove from IN to the Grand Prairie in IL where he had purchased 160 acres, then a new and undeveloped country, when the breaking out of the Civil war led him to remain in IN and to settle (temporarily as he intended) in Brown Co., where he resided, however, until a few years prior to his death. Here upon the farm the subject of this sketch was reared ... in 1869 and 1870 taught school in Brown Co., and in 1870 and 1871 taught at the Lawless schoolhouse in Harrison Twp. in this county ... in 1878 elected prosecuting attorney of Ninth Judicial Circuit, composed of Bartholomew and Brown Cos. Mr. Duncan mar. July 26, 1880, to Jennie E. Buskirk, of Monroe Co. IN, five children: Edith, Jessie, William, Oma and Grace, all living except Oma who died July 22, 1903. ....
