Joshua Duncan, War of 1812 Service Record (extract from Dorothy Furgason 9/1988)
      Born 1797, died Sept. 2, 1861; married Elizabeth (Sarah) Oct. 20, 1820. Served as a Private with Capt. Pierrie Andre's Company of US Rangers on the Indiana Western Frontier (along the Wabash River) to keep peace among the Indians; service was 6 months during 1815. He was discharged at Vincennes Oct. 1815. For the above service, at the age of 58, Joshua petitioned for his 160 acres; Bounty Land was granted and located in Richland Co. IL; prior to this he had lived at Buckskin, Gibson Co. IN. Widow Sarah; from Aug. 1878 she was declared to have an unsound mind; her guardian was Wm. R. McCleary; she received Joshua's $8 per month pension from March, 1878, until death; she resided at Noble, Richland Co. IL during 1887; her age 88 years old.

      Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
      Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
      The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
      Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

      Pg.609: Richland Co. IL; Early Settlers ... Bryant Bullard, a native of NC, settled on Section 6, in Claremont, on this road, with John and Amos. The latter was the second blacksmith in the county, purchasing the tools of Thomas Gardner who opened the first shop in the county. ... On Calhoun Prairie, in the southwest corner of Claremont Township, a settlement was formed about 1818 by Hugh Calhoun Sr. and H. Calhoun Jr., Thomas Gardner, George Cunningham and Joshua Johnson, sons-in-law of Calhoun. The Calhouns were natives of SC and neighbors and relatives of the famous statesman, John C. Calhoun. Gardner was a native of GA, and the first blacksmith in the county.
      Pg.802-3: Richland Co. IL; Claremont Township; Joel Gardner, farmer, born Dec. 18, 1825 in (then) Lawrence Co. IL, and now lives within a quarter of a mile from the spot on which he was born. Joel is the son of Thomas and Frances (Calhoun) Gardner. His father was born in GA and his mother in SC. Thomas moved to IN, where he engaged in farming, and in about 1822 emigrated to IL, and entered 93 acres known as the Peter Colvin farm, and there he died, Jan. 9, 1864, in his 72nd year; his wife died Oct. 10, 1855, aged 60 years, she the dau. of Hugh Calhoun, from whom Calhoun Prairie derived its name. The subject of this sketch ... mar. in 1846 to Rachel E. Heap, born in Muskingum Co. OH, Jan. 10, 1827, died Jan. 24, 1873; mar. 2nd Mrs. Sarah E. Edwards, Nov. 26, 1874, born in LaRue Co. KY June 23, 1838 ...

      Pg.290: ROBERT S. TEDFORD, well-known farmer of Preston Twp, Richland Co., living on Sec.29, born on 14 Feb. 1847 in "Brent" [MAD: Blount] Co. TN, son of Robert and Rebecca (McClery) Tedford who were also natives of the same state, the family is of Irish extraction. In 1853 when our subject was 6 years of age, the parents left their home in the South and took up their residence in Crawford Co. IL. Of their 10 children, Elizabeth, Ann, Hannah, Nancy and Alexander are now deceased; those still living are Margaret, Sarah, Elizabeth, Robert S. and John. The days of his boyhood and youth Robert S. Tedford spent almost entirely in Crawford Co. ... under parental roof until 22 years of age, farmed in Crawford Co., 1869 mar. Miss Mary Duncan, but after a short married life of ten years, she died in 1879, her remains were interred in the Duncanville Cem. of Crawford Co., three children, Laura, Anna and Robert, yet living. In 1880 Mr. Tedford mar. Mrs. Orpha Cravins, widow of Harry Cravins and dau. of John and Catherine (Alvis) Breedlove; three children, Effie, Luther and Ernest; Mrs. Tedford born Gibson Co. IN and came to Jasper Co. IL with her parents when 4 years of age, her parents both natives of Hoosier State. In 1880 Mr. Tedford became resident of Richland Co. ...
      Pg.327-8: THOMAS GARDNER, general farming on Sec. 19, Olney Twp, native of Richland Co., born 16 Dec. 1849 near present home, youngest of 4 sons born to Lorenzo and Eliza (Gratehouse) Gardner; his parents were both natives of IL, the father born Wabash Co. July 16, 1817, when a small child to Richland Co. with his parents, died 15 Jan. 1880, wife was born Edwards Co. IL, died Dec. 16, 1851, both of English extraction. (MAD: probably not connected; was looking for family of Richard Gardner of Richland Co. IL, who had been in the War of 1812, from GA, whose wife was Martha Duncan)

      Pg.561: SAMUEL R. DUNCAN., of Humboldt Twp, born in (MAD: Blount Co.) Tennessee, Nov. 30, 1837, son of Joseph and Susan (Norwood) Duncan of the same State. They were the parents of eleven children, five boys and six girls. Joseph Duncan came to IL in 1844, locating in Crawford Co. where he lived the remainder of his life, died May 6, 1863; date is memorable because, though late in the season, snow fell steadily during the day. Mrs. Duncan still resides in Arcola, as do also her daughters, Mrs. Mary Todd and Mrs. Minerva Ritchey. Joseph and William are residents of Iowa; James of Kansas; John is in Carmi [White Co.], IL; and Mrs. Mattie Burton resides in Danville, IL.
            Samuel R. Duncan was reared to farming, ... log cabin common schools in Southern IL 40 years ago. Sept. 6, 1860, he married Miss Margaret, daughter of Jesse and Charity (McMichael) Kellam, at the home of the bride's parents in Richland Co. this state. Rented land for farming for two years, then moved to Crawford Co. for 5 years, then to Arcola, where after 3 years, he rented land in Humbolt Twp for 11 years, then purchased 400 acre farm; in 1881 raised ... Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are the parents of 12 children, named as follows: Joseph; Harper married Miss Elizabeth Grishom and resides in Humboldt Twp; Charles married Miss Fannie Ashbrook and they reside in Kansas; William, Frank, Jennie, Minnie, Alice, Lavin, Nellie, Nettie, and Samuel Jr. Mr. Duncan a Democrat.

      Pg.778: Redwood County. New Avon. James C. Duncan, native of Tennessee, was born in 1832 in Blount county. Removed to Illinois in 1850 and worked at farming there twenty years. Since June, 1870 his home has been in New Avon, and he has held various town offices here. In 1853 he married and his wife died March 2, 1878. Mary S., Martha J., Sarah L., Robert A., Eva A., John H., Dorcas I., and Charles E. are their children. April 22, 1879 he married Mrs. Julia Blanchard, whose maiden name was Barber. Her children were William B., Emilie E., Orpha A., Joseph H., Rachel I., and George G. (MAD: 1860 Richland Co. IL)
