Perry Co. IL Probate, Box #367, File 1584 (from Deone Penquite 2/1989, MAD's extract)
Depositions of Watson McConnell, Thos. McConnell, Wm. Duncan, in the matter of the last will and testament of Jas. Duncan, deceased; probate thereof pending in Perry Co., filed Feb. 8, 1886.
Certification in Clay Co. IL by William I. Clifton, Clerk of the County Court of signature of Gersham A. Hoff, who was county judge of Clay Co., dated 3 Dec. 1885.
Original Will: I, James Duncan, living in Township 4, Range 3 N., Section 11, in Perry Co. IL, America ... to my wife Mary Anne Duncan (whose maiden name was Boyle) if she survives me, all my real estate and personal property ... for her natural life, and at her death to be divided amongst our children: 1/2 of entire estate to our son William Duncan, deducting what we may give him before our death; the other 1/2 to be divided: to our eldest son and daughter, Rebecca and David B., $5 each, the remainder equally among our four daughters Jane, Elira (Elisa?), Mary D. and Fannie D. Appoint William B. Anderson sole executor. Owing to the many unprovoked, untruthful and slanderous attacks made upon us from time to time by our son-in-law Robert D. Williamson, we consider ourselves justified in coming to the conclusion to prevent as far as possible his receiving into his hands any share of our real estate or personal property, and at the same time earnestly request our other daughters who are to receive the portion amongst them mentioned in the will, do see to our eldest daughter (Williamson's wife) that she suffer not for the necessary comforts of life through her husbands neglect or carelessness. 28 Sept. 1883. /s/ James Duncan, Mary Anne Duncan. Wit. Robert McConnell, Thomas McConnell, Watson McConnell, William Duncan.

MILITARY RECORDS

Pension Index Card File, alphabetical; of the Veterans Administrative Contact and Administration Services, Admin. Operations Services, 1861-1934; Duff to A-J Duncan (negative FHL film 540,888, some cards very faint); Joseph Duncan to Dunn (positive FHL film 540,889, some cards very dark)
Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.
