      Pg.456: Roster of Company H: Corporal CHARLES DUNCAN was born at Duncan's Mills, Fulton County, Illinois, November 29, 1842, was a farmer and enlisted from Woodland. He was promoted corporal; served with his company until the close of the war and was mustered out with the regiment. At the close of his service he returned to his former home, resumed farming and resides at Duncan's Mills, Ill.

On attaining his majority, to Fulton Co., locating at Vermont, where engaged in saddlery and harness trade for 2 years; then due to ill-health he farmed, although for 9 subsequent years he dealt in same business at Bushnell, IL; then settled at Astoria in 1873; partner 3 years with Mr. S.       Pg.507: Bernadotte Twp. John J. Baldwin, farmer, sec. 33, P.O. Ipava; the son of Jackson and Margaret (Hawkins) Baldwin, born Tazewell Co. IL, Oct. 28, 1848; moved to this county in 1876; married Feb. 12, 1877, Mary J. Duncan of Fulton Co. This union has been blessed with one child, Gertrude. Mr. Baldwin a farmer, 160 acres of land.
      Pg.703: Harris Twp. Samuel M. Ickes, son of Jonas and Mary (Duncan) Ickes, born Perry Co. PA, March 12, 1836. His father, who is still living, was born in Montgomery Co. PA, Feb. 3, 1793. He tells us the name Ickes was formerly Ecke, a Saxon word, meaning a corner. Mr. I. erected Bloomfield Academy, Perry Co... son Samuel was educated in this institution. Our subject moved to Warren Co. IL in 1856, to Knox Co. in 1864, and came to this co. in 1872. He m. Jan. 13, 1859 to Miss Elizabeth J. McCartney ....
      Pg.712: Isabel Twp. ... As early as 1829 a saw-mill was erected. Then the well-known Duncan's mill was put up. Duncan's Mills is a small place of business with postoffice, on section 8 and on Spoon river, deriving its name from the gristmill at that point formerly owned and operated by George Duncan, an early settler here and a very highly respected citizen. From 1840 to 1855, perhaps for a greater length of time, his was the largest grist-mill within a radius of 15 or 20 miles.
      Pg.1036: Thomas P. Duncan was born in 1824 in PA, son of George and Elizabeth (Primrose) Duncan, natives of Scotland, both deceased. They came first to Wayne Co. IL, and then in 1836 to Fulton Co. Here in Isabel twp. Thomas P. has toiled for many a year as a farmer and miller, and has now a comfortable home on 260 acres of land. He has ever been an eminent business man. Of the enormous growth of timber on this farm since 1846 we have already written. This gentleman is the founder of Duncan City, and his brother John was the first Postmaster of "Duncan Mills" at this point. Thomas P. Duncan married Laura Freeman, a native of New York and they have had 7 children. (MAD: ?? 1820-1830 Schuylkill Co. PA census)

Harvey Duncan one of 9 children: David, Molly, Beal, Anna Herrell, John, Harvey, Lida Taylor, James (decd.), and 2 died in infancy. In autumn 1870 family to Montgomery Co.; purchased claim at Independence; contested, settled 4 years later in favor of Solomon Duncan. Soon after, Harvey located claim next to his father. Harvey Duncan married Edith Drenner, native of IL, dau. of Jacob & Mary Drenner of VA; 4 children: Lina a teacher, Grace, Jay S., and John W. Republican.
      Pg.504-5: JOHN DUNCAN; arrived 1880 Montgomery Co., born Fulton Co. IL 1852; parents were Solomon and Rebecca (Emerine) Duncan; parents originally from Blue Grass State and were farmers as were their ancestors. Maternal grandfather was resident of eastern KY, living where is now the city of Lexington [Fayette Co.], later removed to Montgomery Co. (KS). John Duncan married 1878 to Miss Allie Hart, dau. of Richard and Gertrude (Walker) Hart, born VT; Richard Hart native of VA, now deceased, wife still resides in IL at very advanced age. Mr. & Mrs. Duncan have 3 children: Homer, eldest son, m. Nellie Davis, dau. of John & Mary Davis, have child Bessie; Lottie, elder dau. residing at home; Edna, youngest, school girl at home.       Pg.42: JAMES H. DUNCAN. Among the noted & representative men of flourishing city of Springfield, MO, is J.H. Duncan, the present prosecuting attorney of Greene Co. ... He came originally from the Blue Grass State, born in Georgetown, Scott Co., Jan. 8, 1854, and is a son of Harvey and Mary E. (Bowden) Duncan. The father was also a native of KY, born in Madison Co., and is of Scotch-Irish descent, his ancestors emigrating to this country at an early date. For many years the father made his home in Springfield but later moved to Canton [Fulton Co.], IL, where he resides at present. Mrs. Duncan was a sister of Ex-Judge James H. Bowden of KY; she died in 1862. Of the 5 children born to this couple, only two besides our subject are now living: Prof. S.P. Duncan, resident of Coldwater KS and probate judge of his county, a prominent attorney of his city; and Mrs. Allie B. Gardener, wife of J.B. Gardener, resides in Canton, IL. The early recollections of our subject were of his native State, but when the war broke out, he moved with his parents to Evansville, Ind., from there to Canton, Ill., in 1866, where he remained for five or six years. He was educated in the Evansville and Canton high schools, and also attended the McGree College in Macon County, Mo., thus securing good educational advantages. After leaving school he became a teacher and while thus occupied he took up the study of law; later he entered the law office of Cravens & Bray and was admitted to the bar in 1876. ... Cumberland Presbyterian Church; home is presided over by his chosen companion, formerly Miss Levie A. Carson, a native of St.Louis and dau. of Henry S.       Pg.291: OLIVER PERRY DUNKIN, one of the leading citizens and pioneer farmers of Clinton township, Sac Co. IA, was born January 21, 1826. His father, Joshua Dunkin, was a native of Virginia and a soldier in the war of 1812. His grandfather, John Dunkin, was a descendant of Scotch ancestry. The maiden name of our subject's mother was Sarah Richardson. She was born in Ohio, a descendant of German ancestry, and was first married to a Mr. Riley, by whom she had four children. She married Mr. Dunkin in Brown Co. OH, and her death occurred in Fulton Co. IL, at the age of sixty. After her death the father came to Clinton Co. IA, where he died at the age of seventy. He voted for Fremont in 1856, but was a Democrat all his life. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and for many years was a Class Leader.
      Oliver P. was a lad of fourteen or fifteen years when the family moved to Fulton Co. IL, and on his father's farm in that county he was reared. He then moved to Jackson Co. IA, and some years later went to Clinton county and settled near Elwood. From Clinton county, in 1875, he came to Sac county, bought 320 acres of land, and on it has since resided. ...

      Pg.767-768: SHELBY P. DUNCAN, attorney, of Wichita, Kan., is a native of Kentucky, where he was born in Fayette county on March 2, 1856. His parents were Harvey and Mary (Bowden) Duncan, natives of Kentucky, where they resided until the Civil War broke out, when they removed to Evansville [MAD: Vanderburgh Co.], Ind., where the father died. Mrs. Duncan died at Evansville, Ind. She was a sister of the late Judge Bowden, of the Supreme Court of Kentucky. Shelby P. Duncan was educated at the Canton (Ill.) High School and at the Peru (Neb.) Normal School. He taught in the public schools of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, and read law while teaching and afterwards in the office of his uncle, the late Judge James H. Bowden, of Kentucky. He was later law clerk to George Gillhan, in Memphis, Tenn., having been admitted to the Russellville (Ky.) bar in 1875 and in Tennesse in 1876. Mr. Duncan opened an office at Fairview, Fulton county, Illinois, in connection with Charles H. Robinson, and there practiced law until 1884, when he moved to Kansas, locating in the village of Nescatunga, Comanche county, which was at that time a rival county seat. In 1888 Mr. Duncan removed to Coldwater in the same county, where he ... May 31, 1898, Mr. Duncan moved to Wichita, and after a time again took up the practice of law, which he has since continued. He was married in 1881 to Miss Kunegunda Kuehn, of Fulton county, Illinois. Two children have been born of this union, Nellie B. and Flora K. Fraternally Mr. Duncan is a member of the Knights of Pythias.
