FAMILY RECORDS

Obituary from "Adams Co. Free Press", Adams Co. IA, November 18, 1905 (copy from Thomas Hooker 7/1998)
(TH: Martha's year of marriage cannot be read, but someone unknown penciled in 183?; there are errors in the obituary. MAD: parts of many type-characters missing, name spelled "Marthia".)
GORSUCH. The funeral of Mrs. Marthia Gorsuch, whose death was mentioned in last issue, was held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.J. Wilson, with whom she had lived for the past 25 years, last Sunday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. A.Y. Cupp, assisted by Rev. S.F. Gutelius. Mrs. Gorsuch, nee Duncan, was born in Philadelphia, Tenn., April 29, 1818, and at the time of her death, Nov. 10 at 9:15 a.m., was aged 87 years, 6 months and 11 days. She was married in 1836? (MAD: bottom of last digit missing) at the place of their birth where she resided until 1843? (MAD: 1848?) when the family moved to near Springfield, Mo., residing there until her removal to Adams county in 1868. The lady resided near the memorable battle of Wilson Creek near Springfield and when the battle was raging the lady often said she found relief from the raging noise of the cannon by placing her head between pillows. Her husband was in the Union army at the time and after the battle and later the devastation of the country by raiders the lady and her family of little children were cared for by relatives who were southern sympathizers. After coming to Adams county the family resided, for a few years, on a farm near Quincy and later the husband was engaged in the mercantile business in that place. Mr. Gorsuch died at the home of a daughter in the west in 1878, since which time the wife has made her home most of the time with her daughter. The deceased was the mother of nine children, three of whom died in infancy in Missouri, three after they had grown to manhood and womanhood and the living being James Gorsuch of Pattonsburg, Mo, and Mesdames W.J. Wilson and James Walker of this city.
