      MAD: The Pension records themselves are alphabetic within the county. The index is small 3x5 cards preprinted with "Name:" and "Service:" and "Res.:" and "Remarks"; also looked at any Dunan and Dunk.. names listed; cards include witnesses for other confederate soldiers.
      Information in FHL Catalog: Confederate soldiers received pensions for military service beginning in 1879; law changed 1891 to include widows; cards in this record for the witnesses of these soldiers & widows attesting to service of each soldier; alphabetical by name of pensioner, included on card are notations concerning county of residence, unit designation, and husband's name in the case of widow cards.

      MAD: most items were small typed cards, 3x5; some items were very blurred in the filming and were double images and hard to read. Cards had name and rank in upper left corner, service unit usually in upper right corner, notation if Home Guard, details from source were given in center of card, and the "Authority" as the last line on the card. The service record from the Historical Record Roll frequently listed several engagements he served in, dates wounded, absent, present, etc., and I usually did not copy all the details.
      Duncan, John T., Sergeant, Co.G, 14th AL Regt. Born in Pike Co. GA. Enlisted by Capt. H. Brooks at Hackneyville [Tallapoosa Co.], AL, on 24 July '61 for the war. Died at Richmond, VA, on 10 June '64. Last paid by Maj. Pierce, Q.M., to include the 31st of Dec. 63 and is entitled to pay therefrom to the 10 June '64 at which time he died from wounds. Admiral Osborn Duncan was son of L. Bryant Duncan, b. 1820 GA, to Tallapoosa Co. AL where d. 1904; married Narcissa Carnifax of Talapoosa Co. near Horse Shoe Bend where her parents settled. L. Bryant Duncan had six children: Allen, John, Admiral Osborn Duncan, Wainright R., Isa B. (mar. James Lindsay), Anna (mar. John R. Irvin). The great-grandfather Allen Duncan was one of four brothers, of SC planters: Miles T., Daniel, William P. and Allen; of Scotch ancestry, settled in New England, drifted south following the Revolutionary War.       HUGH DUNCAN DEAD. HUGH L. DUNCAN, an Atlanta boy, died yesterday morning in Savannah of typhoid fever. This morning his remains will reach the city at 7:10 o'clock and an hour later will be taken to Smyrna, where they will be laid to rest in the old burying ground.
      HUGH DUNCAN was just twenty-two years of age and was a bright boy who gave promise of a long and useful life. For years he worked in THE CONSTITUTION office and at the time of his death was engaged on The Savannah Morning News. He leaves an aged mother, MRS. S.E. DUNCAN, who resides at No. 20 Georgia avenue, and three brothers and a sister. His eldest brother, MR. B. DUNCAN, is now connected with THE CONSTITUTION.
