Some Duncan Families of Eastern Tennessee Before 1800 - Section I, Continued

8.  Charles Duncan, born 1748; in his father's household in Rowan Co. NC 1768, but listed separately in Surry Co. NC 1771 and 1772 (tax lists); married Luranah --------; died 1818, buried in the Duncan-Melvin Cemetery (also called Melvin-Carathers Cemetery), Knob Creek, Washington Co. TN. Also buried in that cemetery is Sarah Duncan, 1816-1889 (see as 3rd wife of Jesse, 8.8.4.)

He was in Surry Co. NC 1776 when he witnessed his father's will; in Washington Co. TN by 1779 (Wash. Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Vol. 1, pg. 82); lived on Knob Creek by 1784 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 238). He was a farmer and mechanic (1893 "Biographical Review of Johnson, Massac, Pope and Hardin Cos. IL" by Biog. Pub. Co., pg. 279, Pope Co., for Francis M. Duncan, 8.7.6.2.).

His will dated 14 April 1817, witnessed by H.G. King, Richard Carr, and William Carr, probated July, 1818 (Washington Co. TN Will Book 1, pg. 117) named his wife Luranah who was to have the land and farm where he then lived during her life or widowhood; all his land was left to his sons William, John and Robert to be divided equally among them; William and John were to have the profits from the saw mill since they built it at their own expense; and further named his sons Raleigh, Marshall, and Joel and his daughters Sarah, Mary, Stacy, Nancy Elizabeth Margaret (no commas between) and Lorany; and specified that if Robert died without lawful issue, then Robert's share of the land was to be divided among all the children. Although Luranah's name has sometimes been read as "Susannah", Charles named a daughter Luranah (8.11.), and his son William (8.3.) named a daughter Lieuranah (8.3.5.).

Charles Duncan's inventory was filed 9 Aug. 1828 (Washington Co. TN Inventory Book 1, pg. 64-69) which indicates that his widow Luranah was deceased by then. The home Charles built just outside the present Johnson City is still standing and is marked as a pioneer homestead (data from Mrs. Bobbie McDowell); the original house is contained within the present home of John Sherfey (undated newspaper article sent by Bruce Duncan to Lenox Baker before 1974).

      Children of Charles and Luranah:

8.1.  Raleigh "Rollo" Duncan; married Mary Kerr (Carr?) on 7 July 1794 (bond date) in Washington Co. TN, bondsman Thomas Davis. He petitioned for divorce on 8 Sept. 1823 in Anderson Co. TN because his wife Mary had left her husband and family (one son is mentioned) in 1811, and traveled in company with John Cole; she then lived with John Cole as man and wife, and had several children by him; there are statements by John Gibbs, John Sharp Jr. and Abby Sharp. (Legislative Petition 151-1823, from "TN Divorces 1797-1858" by Bamman and Spero, pg. 28; from Lucille Mehrkam and Evelyn Sigler.) He was assigned Lot No. 9 as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13).

This is probably the Rolla Duncan who was in Christian's Regiment of Militia, Territory South of the River Ohio, as a private in the Company commanded by Morgan Murray from Washington County, from August 31 to Dec. 3, 1793, along with Marshall Duncan (8.3.). (Natnl. Archives Record #148, Service 1784-1811, card numbers 43202587, 43202652; from Stuart Duncan)

He was not listed on the 1795 Washington Co. TN tax list; he lived in Bold Valley, Anderson Co. TN 1802 (tax list); in Anderson Co. TN until 1815 (Anderson Co. TN Court Minutes 1801-1809, and Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1814-1819); bought land from William Cobb, witnessed by Thomas Davis (title bond recorded 9 Oct. 1815 in Anderson Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1814-1819, pg. 55); not located on 1830 census indexes; died after 6 Oct. 1832 when he and his brothers Marshall, William and John sold their shares of brother Robert's land on Knob Creek to Henry Bashor, a neighbor (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 447). As yet he has not been located later.

He may have had the following son, who lived in Anderson Co. TN in 1830 and named children Luraney and Charles, but there is NO PROOF since there were other Duncan families in the area. Also, Alfred Duncan is listed as a son of Benjamin Duncan and Mary Davis, by other descendants of Benjamin. However, at least one other descendant of Marshall Duncan the Elder was named Alfred; see 7.3.3.

8.1.1.  Alfred Duncan, born 16 Dec. 1800; married Catherine Leach about 1826 (1830 census; "Biographical Directory TN General Assembly Vol II, 1861-1901", pg. 163, for Joseph Abram Brown 8.1.1.6.); died 3 Dec. 1889. Catherine was born 8 March 1809, died 20 Dec. 1882. Both Alfred and Catherine are buried in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Anderson Co. TN ("TN Cousins" by Worth S. Ray, pg. 135; additional info from Mary Sutton, Knoxville, TN). Alfred was in Anderson Co. TN 1830 (pg. 182), 1840 (pg. 5), 1850 (pg. 135), 1860 (pp 48, 49), 1870 (pg. 19), and 1880 (pg. 19). Children from census:

8.1.1.1.  Calloway Duncan, born 1827 TN. One Callaway Duncan married Mary Howard (8.3.3.5.), daughter of Robert Howard and Elizabeth Duncan, on 8 Oct. 1851 in White Co. TN; Mary married 2nd Thomas Burns on 27 Nov. 1870 in White Co. TN, if this was the same family. The family was in Anderson Co. TN in 1860 (pg. 49) as Colaway? Duncan 35 TN, Mary Duncan 25 TN. He has not been located in 1870; in 1880 Calloway H. Duncan age 52 lived with his parents in Anderson Co. TN (pg. 19).

--   This may be the Callaway Duncan, age 47, who married Jane Keeney, age 23, on 21 Aug. 1874 in Washington Co. AR. However, Calloway H. Duncan was in Anderson Co. TN in 1890 on the Civil War veteran's census: "Cpt-Pvt C Co 2nd TN Inf; 12-14-61 to 12-15-64; Hinds Creek PO; gun shot wound right side & leg." It is possible that Mary Howard and Calloway Duncan were divorced before 1870, and each remarried, but there is NO PROOF.

8.1.1.2.  Sarah Duncan, born 1830 TN; married J.F. Chapman on 11 Oct. 1853 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.3.  Julia Duncan, born 1831 TN; lived with her parents in 1860; married R.R. Sartin on 8 Jan. 1861 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.4.  Emiline Duncan, born 1833 TN; married G.W. Thompson on 28 Oct. 1852 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.5.  Jane Duncan, born 1838 TN; lived with her parents in 1860; married J.B. Carden on 13 Feb. 1864 (license date) in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.6.  Talitha Duncan, born 1841 TN, the daughter of Alfred and Catherine (Leach) "Brown"; married Joseph Abram Brown on 16 Jan. 1868 in Anderson Co. TN. Joseph was born 20 June 1842 in Anderson Co. TN; died 1914; he was in the General Assembly 1887-1889 and 1895-1897, a Representative from Anderson, Morgan and Scott Cos. TN, a Republican ("Biographical Directory TN General Assembly, Vol II, 1861-1901", pg. 163; from Evelyn Sigler). "Tabitha" on 1850 census, "Lilitha" on the 1860 census.

8.1.1.7.  Charles Duncan, born 1842 TN; not identified on the 1860 census; married Susan E. Rhea (b. 1846 TN) on 5 Jan. 1864 in Anderson Co. TN; on the 1870 Anderson Co. TN census (pg. 23) with children:

                        8.1.1.7.1.  Martha J. Duncan, born 1864 TN.

                       8.1.1.7.2.  William H. Duncan, born 1866 TN.

                       8.1.1.7.3.  Larylin C.? Duncan, born 1868 TN.

                       8.1.1.7.4.  James O. Duncan, born 1870 TN (age 2/12).

8.1.1.8.  John Duncan, born 1844 TN; lived with his parents in 1860; married Susan J. Kirkpatrick on 8 July 1866 in Anderson Co. TN; died 1878. Susan was born 1845-46, the daughter of Alexander and Catharine Kirkpatrick (1880 census); died 1902. Both John and Susan are buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Highway 61, Anderson Co. TN. The family was in Anderson Co. TN 1870 (pg. 19); Susan lived with her parents in Anderson Co. TN in 1880 (pg. 18-19). Children from 1870 census:

8.1.1.8.1.  Charles Duncan, born 1867 TN.

8.1.1.8.2.  Catharina Duncan, born 1869 TN.

8.1.1.9.  Mary Luraney Duncan, born 6 June 1846 TN; married William R. Hicks on 19 March 1868 in Anderson Co. TN. William was born 16 Dec. 1842 Knox Co. TN, son of John H. Hicks and Elizabeth Dail; he became Judge of 2nd Judicial Circuit of TN (1887 "History of TN; East TN" by Goodspeed, pg. 1113) "Luraney" on 1850 census, "Luranah" on 1860 census, "Mary L." in 1887 History and on the marriage record.

8.1.1.10.  Susan Duncan, born 1848-49 TN; lived with her parents in 1860; Susanah C. Duncan married William C. Cole on 25 Feb. 1866 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.11.  Columbus H. Duncan, born 1851-52 TN; lived with his parents in 1860 and 1870; married Margarett Turpin on 13 Dec. 1870 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.1.1.12.  William Duncan, born 1854 TN (1860 census); not on 1870 census.

8.1.1.13.  Rufus M. Duncan, born 1854 TN; lived with his parents in 1860 and 1870; married Alice E. Dew on 13 Feb. 1876 in Anderson Co. TN.

8.2.  Sarah Duncan; married James Walden or Waldren; died on or before 6 Feb. 1830, White or Gallatin Co. IL (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 82, 119). Sarah Walden was assigned Lot No. 3 as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13). The Washington Co. TN deed on page 119, acknowledged in White Co. IL, was from William Waldren and wife Susan of Gallatin Co. IL for "sixty" acres, Lot No. 3, "bequeathed by Robert Duncan to Sarah Waldren". The Washington Co. TN deed on pg. 82, acknowledged in White Co. IL, was for 16 acres on the "line of No. 2" from the heirs of Sarah Waldren decd, named as John Medlock (signed John Matlock), Thomas Black, Barbary Waldren, Lidia Waldren, Solomon Waldren, John Waldren, and Malinda Waldren, of White Co. IL all of whom appeared in the White Co. IL court to acknowledge the deed.

James Walden may have been the male born 1760-1770 with John Matlock in 1830 White Co. IL (pg. 13), but he has not been located later. Mrs. Mary C. Sweetman suggested James Walden was in Clark Co. IL on the 1830 census. (Some data from and line of Mrs. Mary C. Sweetman of CA (address not included here)) Children of Sarah and James Walden:

8.2.1.  William Walden, married Susan -------- by 1830; he and his wife signed a deed in Gallatin Co. IL on 5 Feb. 1830 to Henry Bashor selling the land "bequeathed by Robert Duncan to Sarah Waldren" (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 119).

8.2.2.  Elizabeth Walden, born 1790, married John Matlock (born 1780-1790). John Matlock was in White Co. IL 1830 (pg. 13) with a younger male born 1800-1810; according to Mrs. Sweetman, this is not the John Matlock in Union Co. IL 1840 (pg. 49) and 1850 (pg. 199) appearing as John Matlock 54 NC, Mary 54 NC, Marion (male) 19 IL, Mary Ann 17 MO, and Harvey Thompson 10 IL.

8.2.3.  Daughter; married Thomas Black; in White Co. IL 1830 (pg. 9) born 1800-1810; in 1840 (pg. 295) born 1790-1800; and in 1850 (pg. 371) as Thomas Black 53 TN, Sarah 54 TN, and Elizabeth Nelson 8 IL.

8.2.4.  Barbara Walden. This is possibly the Barbara in Benton Twp., Newton Co. MO, 1850 (pg. 344), as the household of John E. Thornton 70 SC, Barbery 51 TN, and Solomon Walden 41 TN (8.2.6.).

            8.2.5.  Lidia Walden.

8.2.6.  Solomon Walden, born 1809 TN; with John E. Thornton in Newton Co. MO 1850 (8.2.3.).

            8.2.7.  John Walden.

            8.2.8.  Malinda Walden.

8.2.9.  Possibly another son, who married Tamsey -------- (b. 1780-1790) and died before 1830, when Tamsey Waldren was in White Co. IL (pg. 23) with five children under age 15. There is NO PROOF that Tamsey Waldren was any relation to Sarah Duncan (8.2.).

8.3.  Marshall Duncan, born 1770-75; married Susannah -------- (b. 1777 VA); died Nov. 1839 White Co. TN (White Co. TN Will Book B, pg. 362).

This is probably the Marshall Duncan who was in Christian's Regiment of Militia, Territory South of the River Ohio, as a private in the Company commanded by Morgan Murray from Washington County, from August 31 to Dec. 3, 1793, along with Rolla Duncan (8.1.). (Natnl. Archives Record #146, Service 1784-1811, card numbers 43202551, 43202616; from Stuart Duncan)

He was bondsman for the marriage of his sister Elizabeth (8.6.) to Abraham Bogart on 20 April 1799 in Washington Co. TN; he was in Washington Co. TN 1798-1801 (tax lists). He was in White Co. TN 1812 (tax lists); lived on Cherry Creek 1814 and later (tax lists; White Co. TN Deed Book E, pg. 449); in White Co. TN 1820 (pg. 342) and 1830 (pg. 15). He was assigned Lot No. 9 as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13) and sold it in 1832 (Wash. Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 447). His widow Susannah lived with their son Solomon in White Co. TN 1840 (pg. 48) and 1850 (pg. 166). Marshall's will dated 21 Oct. 1839 and probated 2 Dec. 1839 named his wife Susannah, daughter Hannah, son Solomon, and other legatees (not named). Children of Marshall and Susannah (White Co. TN Deed Book P, pg. 380; Book R, pg. 341, 342, 363; Book W, pg. 55):

8.3.1.  Solomon Duncan, born 1799 TN; in White Co. TN 1840 (pg. 48), 1850 (pg. 166), 1860 (pg. 187) and 1870 (pg. 396, taken 7/25/1870); died Feb. 1871 White Co. TN (White Co. TN Deed Book W, pg. 55, 80, 87; White Co. TN Will Book F, pg. 192, 197). This was probably not the Solomon "Dinkin" who married Susan Parker on 31 Aug. 1824 in Washington Co. TN (7.3.5.).

Solomon appears on the tax lists of White Co. TN continuously from 1822 to 1826. Solomon had land grants in 1827 on waters of Calf Killer Creek (Middle TN Land Grant Book 8, pg. 73, 90), and in 1839 with Russell Duncan (8.3.6. or 8.5.2.) on the Caney Fork (Mountain District TN Land Grant Book OPR, pg. 53). Solomon's wills and gift deeds (White Co. TN Deed Book W, pg. 55, 80, 87) named his niece Leann and her husband James Stewart, niece Mary J. Duncan, and sister Elizabeth, wife of Robert Howard.

8.3.2.  Mary Duncan, born 1800 TN; married Ignatius Howard, who was born 3 Dec. 1796 TN, died 12 May 1871, buried Hillsborough Cemetery, Blandinsville Twp., McDonough Co. IL, probably the son of Robert Howard Sr. and brother of Robert Howard who married her sister Elizabeth Duncan (8.3.3.). The family was in White Co. TN 1830 (pg. 30), in Des Moines Co. IA 1840 (pg. 122), and in Benton Twp., Des Moines Co. IA, 1850 (pg. 404); in Des Moines Co. IA on 29 June 1853 (White Co. TN Deed Book R, pg. 342). Mary may have died in Iowa, since she was not buried with her husband. Children on the 1850 census:

8.3.2.1.  Henderson Howard, born 1820 TN.

8.3.2.2.  Wayman Howard, born 1824 TN; married Loutte -------- (b. 1828 PA) about 1846; in Des Moines Co. IA 1850 (pg. 404 next to Ignatius Howard) with children:

8.3.2.2.1.  Edmund Howard, born 1847 IA.

8.3.2.2.2.  Mary Howard, born 1848 IA.

8.3.2.3.  Wesley Howard, born 1825 TN.

8.3.2.4.  Douglas Howard, born 1830 TN.

8.3.2.5.  Madison Howard, born 1832 TN.

8.3.2.6.  Elisa Howard, born 1832 TN.

8.3.2.7.  Elizabeth Howard, born 1836 IL.

8.3.2.8.  Ann Howard, born 1840 IA.

8.3.2.9.  Mary Ellen Howard, born 1844 IA.

8.3.3.  Elizabeth Duncan, born 1802 TN; married Robert Howard; died after 21 Sept. 1873 (White Co. TN Deed Book Y, pg. 172/174). Robert Howard was born 1800 TN, the son of Robert Howard Sr. (White Co. TN Deed Book I, pg. 60, 14 April 1834) and probably the brother of Ignatius Howard who married her sister Mary Duncan (8.3.2.). The family was in White Co. TN 1830 (pg. 47) and 1840 (pg. 30); in Van Buren Co. TN 1850 (pg. 769). Their children on the 1850 census:

8.3.3.1.  Thomas Howard, born 1827 TN.

8.3.3.2.  John Howard, born 1828 TN.

8.3.3.3.  Arnetta Howard, born 1830 TN.

8.3.3.4.  Marshall Howard, born 1833 TN.

8.3.3.5.  Mary Howard, born 1835 TN; married Callaway Duncan on 8 Oct. 1851 in White Co. TN (see 8.1.1.1.); in Anderson Co. TN 1860 (pg. 49) as Colaway Duncan 35 TN, Mary Duncan 25 TN; married 2nd Thomas Burns on 27 Nov. 1870 in White Co. TN (White Co. TN Deed Book Y, pg. 172/174). See comments under 8.1.1.1. on a possible divorce.

8.3.3.6.  Leann ("Lesoney" on 1850 census) Howard, born 1836 TN; lived with Solomon Duncan (8.3.1.) in White Co. TN 1860 (pg. 187); married James Stewart on 31 July 1867 in White Co. TN (White Co. TN Deed Book W, pg. 55). James and Lee Ann Stewart were on the 1870 White Co. TN census (pg. 396) next to Solomon Duncan, with no children.

8.3.3.7.  Elizabeth Howard, born 1838 TN; lived with Solomon Duncan (8.3.1.) in White Co. TN 1860 (pg. 187). This is probably be the Elizabeth Howard who married Tucker Maulden (8.3.4.) on 20 May 1869 in White Co. TN.

8.3.3.8.  Richard Howard, born 1840 TN.

8.3.3.9.  Amanda Howard, born 1846 TN.

8.3.4.  Hannah Duncan, born 1805 TN; married Tucker Maulden on 19 June 1844 in White Co. TN; in White Co. Tucker Maulden was born 1821 NC; married 2nd Elizabeth Howard (see 8.3.3.7.) on 20 May 1869 in White Co. TN.

8.3.5.  Lieurana Duncan, born 13 Feb. 1807 (obit, from Charlotte Morrow); married Preston Anderson on 15 June 1826 (his obit, from Charlotte Morrow); died 2 March 1877 age 70 years 17 days (obit; "Lieuhana" on the tombstone). Preston was born 6 Feb. 1806 KY, the son of James and Rebecca Anderson (White Co. TN Deed Book I, pg. 222, from heirs), died 19 May 1874 (obit). Both Preston and Lieurana are buried in the Anderson Cemetery in Sec. 35, Blandinsville Twp., McDonough Co. IL.

--   One James Anderson Sr. was formerly of Washington Co. TN in 1812 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 58) when he proved a deed in White Co. TN; this could be the same James Anderson who was father of Preston. Preston's mother Rebecca, born 1780 NC, lived with them in 1850.

The family was in White Co. TN 1830 (pg. 27) and 1840 (pg. 37); in McDonough Co. IL by 1844 (1878 "History of M'Donough County", pg. 97); in McDonough Co.             8.6.8.  Sarah Bogart, a daughter of Abraham Bogart and Jane Looney, born 11 Nov. 1814; married Pleasant Ponder on 2 Sept. 1835 in Roane Co. TN; died 21 July 1886, buried Mt. Hope, Lawrence Co. AL. A son and daughter were under age 5 on the 1840 census in Roane Co. TN (pg. 88) who have not been identified. The family has not been found in 1850, but was in Lawrence Co. AL in 1860 (Southern Division, pg. 948, #447; from Juanita Rieger to Shirley Harper) with children:

8.6.8.1.  daughter, born 1835-1840 (1840 census). This may be Mary, born 1838 TN, wife of Benjamin Fuller born 1830 TN, a minister who lived with Pleasant Ponder's family in Lawrence Co. AL in 1860 (Southern Div., pg. 948, #447) (suggestion by Shirley Harper).

                 8.6.8.2.  son, born 1835-1840 (1840 census).

8.6.8.3.  William Ponder, born 1843 TN.

8.6.8.4.  Elizabeth Ponder, born 1845 TN.

8.6.8.5.  Samuel Ponder, born 1847 AL.

8.6.8.6.  Abraham Ponder, born 1850 AL.

8.6.8.7.  Sarah Ponder, born 1852 AL.

8.6.8.8.  Clarissa Ponder, born 1855 AL.

8.6.8.9.  Orphelia Ponder, born 1859 AL.

8.7.  William Duncan, born 1783 TN; probably married 1st, wife unknown; married 2nd Ruth Odell on 15 Aug. 1809 in Washington Co. TN, bondsman Jesse Hampton; died 1865 Washington Co. TN (Washington Co. TN Inventory Book 3, pg. 413). Ruth was born 1780-90 and died 1840-50. William was assigned Lot No. 10 as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13) and sold it in 1832 (Wash. Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 447).

William lived on Knob Creek, Washington Co. TN; in Washington Co. TN 1830 (pg. 203), 1840 (pg. 191) and 1850 (pg. 270). In 1850 his household was listed as William Duncan 67 TN, Margaret 42 TN, Mary A. 24 TN, and Tennessee Adams 15 TN. Thomas Hall b. 1837 and Sarah Hall b. 1831 lived with him in 1860 Washington Co. TN (pg. 106). The settlement of William's estate (Washington Co. TN Settlement of Estate Book 3, pg. 432, 433, 439) named 11 heirs to receive equal amounts: Margaret Hendrix, Hiram Duncan, John Duncan, Charles Duncan, Alvis Duncan, Russell Duncan, Lydia Miller, Stacy Hoss, Susan Nave's heirs (settled to Saml. C. Nave guardian), Mary Ann Geisler, Phlp? M. Duncan. (Hiram, Alvis, and Russell appt. Daniel Geisler their attorney; John appt. Jonathan Kelly atty; Phip? - settled to J.R. Melvin.)

8.7.1.  Margaret Duncan, born 1808 TN; lived with William Duncan in Washington Co. TN 1850 (pg. 270); married Solomon Hendrix on 30 Nov. 1858 (license date) in Washington Co. TN. Margaret Hendrix was one of the many purchasers of items from William Duncan's estate in 1865.

Solomon Hendrix, age 60, b. TN, was in Carter Co. TN in 1850 (pg. 407) with wife Susannah age 56 b. TN, whom he married in 1812, and children William 22, Hannah 17, and Solomon W. 15 TN. In 1860 in Carter Co. TN (pg. 131) the household consisted of Solomon Hendricks 70 TN, Margaret 53 TN, and Soloman W. 25 TN, as well as George Glover 16 TN day laborer. Next door was Wm. Hendricks 32 TN, wife Mary 28 TN, and children Emily 6, Soloman W. 4, and Susan E. 3 TN. In 1870 Carter Co. TN (pg. 42) Margaret Hendrix 63 TN lived alone, next door to Thomas Duncan 28 TN, Phoeba A. 29 TN, and Louisa J. 5/12 TN born Jan., and Hannah Johnson 62 NC. (Thomas appears to be the son of Jesse Duncan 8.8.4.).

8.7.2.  Hiram Duncan, born about 1810 if the children were born in the same order listed in the settlement of William's estate; died after 1865.

--   Possibly the Hiram Duncan who married Ann Barbry Buck on 11 March 1830 in Carter Co. TN, security James W. Renfro.

--   Possibly the Hiram Duncan, born 1809-10 TN, who married Mrs. Nancy Humphrey on 12 Sept. 1844 in Jefferson Co. IL; the family was in Jefferson Co. IL 1850 (pg. 373) as the household of Hiram Duncan 41 TN, Nancy 31 TN, Barbara A. 16, Sarah J. 3, and Lydia 4/12 all b. IL and William H. Humphrey 7 IL; and in 1860 (#273) as Hiram Duncan 50 TN, Nancy 40 TN, William Humphry 17, Barbary 15, Sarah J. 13, Lydia 11, Isaac S. 8 IL, and Isabel Sizenbay 74 TN.

--   Possibly the Hiram Duncan in Rhea Co. TN in 1840 (pg. 26), born 1800-10, wife born 1810-20, and a young male born 1830-35; where there was a John Duncan in 1830 who may be John (8.7.3.); and where there was Russell Duncan in 1850 (8.7.6.). This Hiram Duncan lived on 50 acres next to John Rhea and Munford Smith from 1837 to 1840 (Rhea Co. TN Deed Book F, pg. 353, and Book I, pg. 97). This Hiram Duncan was on a road crew with John Duncan (see under 8.7.3.) in 1833 (Rhea Co. TN County Court Minutes Volume B, pg. 272). However, Hiram may be a son of Jeremiah (Sec. IV, 9.), whose children were in Carter Co. TN by 1850.

8.7.3.  John Duncan, born about 1812 if the children were born in the same order listed in the settlement of William's estate; died after 1865.

--   This cannot be the John Duncan (Sec. III, 4.2.3.) born 1814 TN who married Elizabeth Hampton in 1833 and died in 1850, since William's son John was still living in 1865.

--   This is probably not the John Duncan, born 1790-1800, in 1830 Rhea Co. TN (pg. 36), wife born 1800-1810, with 2 sons under age 5, 2 age 5-10, and 1 age 10-15, and one daughter age 5-10; who was on the same road crew in 1833 as Hiram Duncan (see under 8.7.2.) (Rhea Co. TN County Court Minutes Volume B, pg. 272); Hiram Duncan was on the census there in 1840 (pg. 26); Russell Dunkin (8.7.6.) was there in 1850.

--   Neither John nor Hiram of Rhea Co. TN 1840 may be sons of William (8.7.); they may be sons of Jeremiah (Sec. IV, 9.) who died by 1823. This John would be older than most of the other children of William (8.7.). The only proven son of William who lived in Rhea Co. TN was Russell (8.7.6.).

8.7.4.  Charles Duncan, born 1814 TN; married Rachel E. Hoss (b. 1817 TN) on 1 Sept. 1840 in Washington Co. TN. Charles Duncan was one of the many purchasers of items from William Duncan's estate in 1865. He was in Washington Co. TN 1840 (pg. 202) single but with a female born 1780-1790 in his household; in Washington Co. TN 1850 (pg. 270) he lived next door to William Duncan (8.7.) with Margaret Chapman born 1829 also in his household. He was in Sullivan Co. TN in 1860 (14-131) and 1870 (pg. 519 #123). Children from census and from manuscript genealogy of "Charles Duncan and Ann Hoss" (from Mary Carter Linn to Joyce Colliflower):

8.7.4.1.  John Madison Duncan, born 22 June 1841 in Washington Co. TN; married 1st Sarah Dykes on 10 Aug. 1865 in Sullivan Co. His second wife, Mary Jane Dykes (Mary Ann in the Pension), was born 1855 TN (1880 census) or Dec. 1851 (1900 census), the daughter of Jasper Dykes and a niece of his 1st wife Sarah Dykes; Mary Jane died 20 Feb. 1881 (or 1884, per pension); they had 4 children. His third wife, Birdie Dykes, was born about 1882 (pension), the daughter of Alexander Dykes and a niece of his 2nd wife Mary Jane Dykes, and great-niece of his first wife; they had 5 children. He lived with his parents in 1860 Sullivan Co. TN (14-131). He was in Hawkins Co. TN in 1880 (16th Civil Dist., Vol. 14, ED 78, Sheet 15) and 1900 (Vol. 3 ED 79 Sheet 7). He lived in Jefferson Co. IL in 1875; Hawkins Co. TN in 1879 and 1880; Sullivan Co. TN 1913 (Confederate Pension Application WO 1,013,900).       8.11.  Luranah Duncan, born 1790-1800; married David Stevens or Stephens on 1 Sept. 1814 in Washington Co. TN bondsman Isaac Little; died about 1828 TN when her 6th child, John F. Stephens, born 1823 in East TN, was age 5 (1894 "Portrait and Biographical Record of Clinton, Washington, Marion and Jefferson Cos. IL" by Chapman, Washington Co., pg. 436-9 for son John F. Stephens). David Stephens was the son of Henry and Margaret Stephens (Washington Co. TN Wills, Book 1, pg. 57, 1801) and brother of John Stephens who married her sister Margaret Duncan (8.12.). Luranah Stevens was assigned Lot No. 4 of 17 acres as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13); in 1829 David and Luraney Stevens of Monroe Co.                   The family was in Washington Co. TN 1818, 1819, 1826 and 1837 (tax lists); in Greene Co. TN 1821 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 17, pg. 307); moved to the area near Tellico, Monroe Co. TN from Blount Co. TN ("TN Cousins" by Worth S. Ray, pg. 352); in Monroe Co. TN 1830 (pg. 148); David Stephens was still in Monroe Co. TN in 1840 (pg. 158) but without a wife. This may be the David Stephens in Washington Co. TN 1850 (pg. 509), as House #2150, Family #2196, David Stephens 56 TN farmer; House #2150, Family #2197, Catharin Hoagath 21 TN, George 2, and Francis M. 1. In 1860 he lived in Monroe Co. TN (pg. 186/282), age 65, with William and Eliza Ray.

Only one child has been identified (1894 "Portrait and Biographical Record of Clinton, Washington, Marion and Jefferson Cos. IL" by Chapman, Washington Co., pg. 436-9, Washington Co.):

8.11.1.  John F. Stephens, born 1823 in East TN, 6th child of David Stephens and Luranah Duncan; married in 1844 to Miss Levina Ray, daughter of Jesse Ray and Margaret Blair; to IL in 1849. (1894 "Portrait")

8.12.  Margaret Duncan, born 1798 TN; married John Stevens or Stephens on 27 Jan. 1813 in Washington Co. TN, bondsman David Stevens; died after 1864 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 39, pg. 102). John Stephens was born 1793 TN, son of Henry and Margaret Stephens (Washington Co. TN Wills, Book 1, pg. 57, 1801) and brother of David Stephens who married her sister Luranah Duncan (8.11.); John died about 1865 Washington Co. TN (Wash. Co. TN Inventory Book 3, pg. 380). Margaret Stevens was assigned Lot No. 2 as heir of Robert Duncan in 1828 (Washington Co. TN Minutes, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, pg. 10-13).

The family was in Washington Co. TN 1815, 1826, 1827, and 1837; in Greene Co. TN 1821 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 17, pg. 203); in Washington Co. TN 1830 (pg. 211), 1840 (pg. 251), 1850 (pg. 251) and 1860 (pg.2/42); had land on Brush Creek and Cedar Creek in Washington Co. TN (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 185; Book 20, pg. 14). On 27 Jan. 1864 John Stevens Sr. deeded to Margrate Stevens 25 acres on Cedar Creek, next to land of John H. Stevens and George Stevens, in exchange for her dower in all his estate; at her death the land was to go to his "first children" Isaac, Henry, Margrett, Metildy and Cuimine (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 39, pg. 102). At the same time, he deeded to his son John Stevens Jr., 100 acres, part on Cedar Creek and part was another tract on the master knob on the north side of his mother's tract (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 39, pg. 104). On 26 Dec. 1863 John Stevens had deeded to Margaret F. Stevens land on Brush Creek (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 39, pg. 106).

The family has not been traced fully; however the following children were listed in the 1850 census and estate:

8.12.1.  Isaac Stevens, born 1821 TN; this may be the Isaac Stevens who married Elizabeth Watters on 5 Sept. 1850 in Washington Co. TN.

           8.12.2.  Henry Stevens.

8.12.3.  Margaret F. Stevens, born 1825 TN. This may be the Margaret F. Stevens who married William M. Bayless on 27 Sept. 1869 in Washington Co. TN; in Washington Co. TN 1870 (pg. 268 next to John Stevens), as the household of William Bayless 63 TN, married in Oct. to Margaret 44 TN, with Margaret Stevens 10 and Mary E. Stevens 11 TN.

8.12.4.  Matilda Stevens; this may be the Matilda Stephens who married Francis Williams on 31 March 1836 in Washington Co. TN.

           8.12.5.  Cuimine Stevens.

           8.12.6.  George W. Stevens, born 1832 TN.

8.12.7.  Eliza J. Stevens, born 1833 TN; this may be the Elisa Jane Stevens who married Thomas C. Jones on 1 Jan. 1857 in Washington Co. TN.

8.12.8.  John H. Stevens Jr., born 1835 TN. One John H. Stevens of Johnson City, wife Nancy C., left a will recorded in Washington Co. TN Will Book 2, pg. 620, on March 1889. That family was in Washington Co. TN in 1870 (pg. 268), John age 36, Nancy C. age 30, children, and also William Stevens age 84 and Margaret age 75. William Stevens was apparently the brother of John Stevens who married Margaret (8.12.) since he also lived with them in 1850.

8.12.9.  David Stevens, born 1836 TN.

8.12.10.  William Stevens, born 1837 TN.

8.12.11.  Frances Stevens, born 1839 MO.

8.13.  Nancy Duncan. No proof of her identity. When her brother Robert (8.10) died and his land was divided in 1828, it was divided into 11 parts and no lot was assigned to Nancy. She may have been deceased by that time.

--   One Nancy Duncan, born 1790-1800, married Charles Whitson (b. 1790-1800) on 15 Feb. 1816 in Washington Co. TN bondsman James Guinn; in Monroe Co. TN 1830 (pg. 80), but not located later. See Sec. V, 10. The only connection located so far between Charles Whitson and Charles Duncan's children is that the bondsman for the marriage was James Guinn. Elizabeth Duncan (8.7.8.) married a John D. Guin in 1847; and Jesse Duncan (8.8.4.) married an Abarella Guin in 1839.

Nancy, daughter of Charles, may have married someone else, and her marriage took place between 1800 and 1810, when many of the marriage records are missing.

8.14.  Jesse Duncan, who was killed by the Indians when Charles Duncan (8.) and sons and families were walking to Washington Co. TN. John Sherfey was quoted in a newspaper article about Charles Duncan's home in Washington Co. TN: "From folklore told me when I was a boy," Sherfey said "Duncan, his sons and their families were walking to this part of the country when one of the boys, Jesse Duncan, was killed by the Indians. This was even before the arrival of William Bean, and not many years after Daniel Boone had come through here. In spite of the tragedy, the Duncans settled on the land." However, this may be mixed in with "Jesse Duncan the first white man killed in TN"; see under Rice Duncan (7.).
