MAD: most items were small typed cards, 3x5; some items were very blurred in the filming and were double images and hard to read. Cards had name and rank in upper left corner, service unit usually in upper right corner, notation if Home Guard, details from source were given in center of card, and the "Authority" as the last line on the card. The service record from the Historical Record Roll frequently listed several engagements he served in, dates wounded, absent, present, etc., and I usually did not copy all the details.

AL Confederate Pension Applications, in AL State Archives, Duke - Dunn (FHL film 1,502,781)
MAD: Did not extract all pension applications for the same person if they gave no other genealogy information. Documents were extracted in order on film. Did not usually copy reason for pension request, which was frequently old age or rheumatism or feebleness; did not always copy witnesses names, which sometimes only said they knew the applicant was of good character and in need of the pension. "Cavalry" was frequently abbreviated "Calv" and spelled "Calvary." Did not usually copy the schedule of property unless it listed land. The complete pension papers should be rechecked individually, following is very brief extract of contents.
DUNCAN, J.W., Franklin Co. AL, Private, Co.E, 4th AL Cav. Affidavit 25 May 1914 by W.R. Petree, Franklin Co. AL, knows John W. Duncan who enlisted in Co.E, 4th AL Cav., served until end of war; I was 3rd Lt. of this company. Affidavit 26 May 1914 by J.W. Duncan, Franklin Co., enlisted Franklin Co. AL Sept. 1862 in Co.E, 4th AL Cav., until end of war, paroled at Pond Springs, AL, May 1865; wounded at Barton, AL, April 1863, caused deafness, /s/ John W. Duncan. Appl. 5 July 1909 by John W. (X) Duncan, Franklin Co., enlisted as Private in Co.E of 4th AL Cav., Sept. 1862, at Franklin Co., discharged May 1865, wounded battle of Cherokee & Pond Springs, AL, now age 75, old age and rupture, P.O. Belgreen; wit. J.W. Ligon, W.R. Petre. Report 9 May 1914, name of John W. Duncan not found on rolls of Co.E of any 4th AL Cavalry C.S.A. (handwritten note: There was 24th Cav.; J.W. Duncan was in Col. W.A. Johnson 4 AL Cav.). Appl. 26 Oct. 1916, over 80 years of age, born Marian Co. AL, now on pension roll; witness W.R. Petree, knew him 50 years. Schedule of property, 5 July 1909, John W. Duncan had 90 acres in Franklin Co. including 15 acres in cultivation and 2-room log house. Affidavit 17 July 1911, over age 70, born Marion Co. AL. Affidavit 17 July 1911 by C.F. Fleming who knew him 60 years. Report 17 April 1914, no John W. Duncan on roll of Co.E in any 4th AL Cav. C.S.A.; however, on May 5, 1863, one J.W. Duncan filed a claim for a horse killed in action near Cherokee, AL, April 17, 1863; Jeremiah Daily, Captain, Co.E, Roddey's, 4th AL Cav. C.S.A., of which one W. Petrie was a member, said that J.W. Duncan was a member of his company.

Vol.1, pg.184-5: GEORGE WEBSTER DUNCAN, of Auburn [Lee Co.], AL, was born Oct. 12, 1866, at Rockwood, Franklin Co. AL. His father, Thomas Alfred Duncan, was born July 21, 1841, and lived at the same place. He was in the army of the Confederacy four years as a soldier and was the son of Robert Duncan and Martha (Hargett) Duncan, who lived near Russellville, AL. George W.'s mother, Margaret Hargett, was the dau. of Richard Hargett and wife, Elizabeth Hartis, who lived in Charlotte, NC. His ancestors came to America from Scotland about 1783 and lived successively in VA, KY and TN. They removed to AL about the time the State was admitted to the Union. They settled in Franklin and Marion Cos. The Hargett ancestors (maternal) came to AL from NC at an early date in the history of the State. George W. was prepared for college in a private school at Russellville, AL ... master of sciences in 1900, special course in law, 3 years principal of city school of Florence, AL, and 7 years as principal of Auburn Female institute, Auburn, AL; first vice-president of AL Educational Association ... Democrat, Baptist, Knight of Honor; on Jan. 19, 1893, he mar. at Lowndesboro, AL, to Julia Alexander, the dau. of Edmund Alexander and wife Emily (Young) Alexander, who lived at Lowndesboro, AL. Julia Alexander graduated at the State Normal college, Florence, AL, in 1892.

Pg.134: North Alabama Conference, 1888: George M.G. Duncan was born in Marion County, Ala., May 2, 1854; and died at Moulton, Ala., September, 1888. He was born of the Holy Spirit on the Yorkville Circuit. When only twelve years of age he joined the Church. In his 18th year he was licensed to preach, and joined the North Alabama Conference in 1875. He served the following charges: North River Mission, one year; Pikeville Mission, three years; Waterloo Circuit, two years; then Moulton Circuit until death ended his labors. Brother Duncan was ordained deacon by Bishop Keener at Gadsden in 1877, and elder by Bishop McTyeire at Oxford in 1880. His education was limited; but, having a strong mind, by close application to books, he constantly improved his knowledge. His last year's work was marked by ... In the last days, while sick, he was ... Patient, resigned, and confident, he passed off without fear, praying that his mantle might fall upon his only son. Thus ended the life of our noble, useful, and trusted brother and friend.
