Visitors to Irongray today simply drive up on quiet country roads and leave their vehicle in this extensive new car park.
The network of roads and bridges in this Parish, connecting the farming communities with Dumfries and the village of Shawhead, were all due to developments starting in the in the late 1700s and continuing throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Before the 19th century movement of people and goods were over hill tracks avoiding the low bogy land.
