Notes for B
ARBARA PENCE:
There is considerable debate about the parentage of Barbara Pence Kibler. Most seem to agree that. her and her brother Lewis are descendants of the Hawkesbill Pence's of the area eventually to be known as Page Co., VA. However, much intricate debate, leaves a question as to whether their father was Lewis (Sr.) or his believed to be brother Jacob. These two men, Jacob and Lewis, are believed to have been brothers along with a third younger brother named Henry. On September 15, 1749, Johan Ludwig Bentz and Jacob Benc were recorded as arriving on the ship the Phoenix at Philadelphia. It seems probable that these were the Lewis and Jacob Pence of Shenandoah County. Their was one other Pence, Henry, int he area who was probably a third brother.

This Pence family is outlined in great detail by Richard Allen Pence [email protected] in his book The Pence Families of America, Part II.  Mr. Pence has been working on a book on the Hawkesbill Pences that I am hoping to discover that he has finished.  He is working on proving a line that will show Barbara's grandparents and great grandparents were from Iggelheim, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany.  More as soon as I locate this information.  THANKS Richard Pence!!

Either way, there seems to be concensus that Barbara Pence and her brother Lewis Pence, married siblings Barbara Kibler and Adam Kibler. All were of Germanic ancestry, probably from the Palatinate region of Germany.

Lewis and his wife Barbara settled with most of the rest of the' Hawkesbill Pence' descendants in Champaign Co., Ohio. This same Lewis by the way is believed to be the Lewis who fought with Michael Reader's Co. for our independance during the Revolutionary War.

Barbara's husband Adam Kibler died fairly young and is believed buried along with his father on the Robert Kemp farm outside of Luray. Our Barbara Pence Kibler immigrated with her son Theobald through Ohio and Indiana finally settling in Jasper Co., Ill. Barbara is buried beside her son Theobold in the little old Kibler graveyard, on the Warfel farm, near Rosehill, Ill.
