WILLIAM H.2 IVEY (JAMES1) was born May 21, 1828 in Crawford Co., ILL, and died
February 26, 1899 in unk. He married (1) MARGARET BEECHER September 23, 1847 in Crawford Co., ILL. She died 1847 in
Palestine, Crawford Co., ILL. He married (2) ELISABETH HICKS December 28, 1851 in Crawford Co., ILL.

William Ivey listed in each of these two Census is listed as a carpenter)
5. William Ivy Civil War Vet, 60 th Illinois Infantry, Co. K and buried in Haven Hill
Cemetary, Section F
6. Married 1st Margaret Beecher and 2nd Elisabeth Hicks in Crawford Co., ILL
According to William's military papers, he enlisted November 5, 1861 in Johnson Co.,
Illinois. He was mustered in at Camp Dubois Jonesboro Ill. on Feb 17, 1862 for a period of
three years. He reenlisted at the end of that period on Feb. 14, 1864 while stationed in
Ropville, Georgia., for another three years, and was paid a bounty of $400.00 for
reenlisting. He was mustered out July 31, 1865 in Louisville, KY.
His physical description at the time of reenlistment was as follows:
Eyes: Black..Hair: Black..Complexion:Dark..Height:5'91/2"
Notes for MARGARET BEECHER:
If she IS William's first wife, she was probably dead by the 1850 Census and definitely by
1851 when William married again.

Co.. She married JAMES THOMAS WINTERS September 19, 1853 in Richland Co., Ill.. He was born
Abt. 1827 in Fermanaugh Co., Ireland, and died September 06, 1870 in Lawrence Co., Ill..
Notes for ELIZABETH JANE IVEY:
Her son James Thomas Winters death cert. shows her name as Margaret Elisabeth, but her
marriage info, gravestone and pension app indicate Elisabeth Jane, called Betsey per her
Momma's marriage consent note.
I have just recently discovered that John Ivey is Elisabeth's brother. He is buried
between Elisabeth Ivey Winters and her son, Andrew Nicholas Winters in the Palestine
Cemetary. He had a 'Veterans' flag on his grave Memorial Weekend!!
I will add more info soon on these Ivey's and Winters as this line is currently 'jumping'
for me.
Notes for JAMES THOMAS WINTERS:
James Thomas Winters was born in Fermanaugh Co., Ulster, Ireland, in the area today a part
of Great Britain and known as Northern Ireland. I'm fairly certain that he was born
Catholic as he is buried in a Catholic Cemetary. He was born about 1827 and was in
Richland Co., Ill. by 1853, when he first appears marrying our g-g-g-grandmother,
Elisabeth Jane (Betsey) Ivey.
The "Great Potatoe Famine" of Ireland was basically from 1840-1850. The numbers
of immigration from Fermanaugh Co. during this time period are staggering!! I think
it also an almost 100% certainty that is why and when James Thomas Winters left Ireland.
Thanks to his military and pension records we know the following: He fought for the 63rd
Illinois Infantry, Co.I, from 1861-1864 during the Civil War. He enlisted on December 1,
1861 in Richland Co., Illinois for a period of three years. He was mustered in at
Jonesboro, Illinois on April 10, 1862. He was discharge Dec. 31, 1863 and reenlisted
January 1, 1864 as a 'veteran". It is from his reenlistment papers that we learn that
he was born in Fermanaugh Co., Ireland. It also descibes him as having Blue eyes, Dark
complexion and standing 5'7" tall. His final discharge was July 13, 1865.
I have just discovered (May 1998) that James' name is listed with the rest of his regiment
on a memorial for the soldiers from Illinois who were at the seige of Vicksburg. I will
add more info as opportunity avails itself!
Ironically enough, he also was stationed at Huntsville, AL. At the time, during the same
month, that James Winters was reenlisting as a veteran in Huntsville, Alabama, my husband
Tom's g-g-grandfather was being exchanged from a P.O.W. camp off the Mississippi Gulf
Coast. A Camp for REBEL P.O.W.'s! Yes our ancestors fought on opposite sides!
In 1870 after the war, James was working on the railroad. He fell between two boxcars and
was killed. He is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetary in OLNEY! This implies that he was at
least christened Catholic. He has his regiment on his headstone and it was from a book on
Cemetary records in Olney that I discovered his Civil War connections, confirmed by his
records from the National Archives.
In his "WIDOW'S DECLARATION FOR PENSION " we find much confirmation of info on
this family. Elisabeth and all three of there living sons are mentioned, including their
dates of birth. A Valentin Abergg , Mary Curry and Jenetta Sanford made statements in
Elisabeth's behalf.
Elisabeth chose to be the administratrix for her husband James' estate. Although not
wealthy, their estate of land and equipment makes for interesting reading. They appear to
have been some hard working folks with James farming as well as working on the reailroad.
I find Elisabeth's decision to administer the estate herself an admirable
one, especially when she had to sign the papers with just her mark. Her brother William,
however, also signed the Administrator's Bond with her, and he DID sign his own name.
Thomas L. Stewart, Lewis Cheek, and Fredrick Balmer were the appraisers of the estate.
Elisabeth managed to receive a small pension from the service after his death.
She outlived him by 28 years, but never remarried. Elisabeth and her sons returned
to Crawford co., Ill. Based on theplace of birth of her granchildren I believe it was
about 1885. Elisabeth's daughter-in-law- Ribecca Slavens died young, and her motherless
grandaughter, Margaret (Winters) Swanner saw Elisabeth as a source of refuge. Elisabeth is
buried in Palestine Cemetary next to her brother John Ivy.
Jim DeVore (both my father and my brother) received their name from James Thomas Winters,
in a round about way. James Thomas Winters oldest son John ( my g-g-grand) named his
oldest son James Thomas Winters, also. This second James Thomas Winters (grandson of the
first one) had a younger sister, Margaret Ann Winters. After her marriage to Joseph
Swanner, Margaret named her first born son James Swanner, after her brother. Margaret also
had a daughter Goldia Belle Swanner who married Pearl Elisha DeVore. Goldie and Pearl
named their first born son, James Noah DeVore after Goldie's brother, James Swanner and
her husband Pearl's father Noah. And the beat goes on.....

Census records say at one point that he was a 'concrete worker'. On her pension app. his mother declared his birth date as Sept. 23, 1861. (?) He also inherited a grist mill on a branch of the river that used to go behind the Palestine Cemetary. He is buried with his Mom in Palestine. |
