7. JESSE P.4 CRAVENS (JESSE3, JESSE2, JESSE1) was born Abt.
1860 in Crawford Co. Ill., and died Aft. 1887 in unk. He married ELNORA GANNON January
30, 1880 in Crawford Co. Ill., daughter of HARRIS GANNON and ELLINORE DAILEY. She was born April 23, 1859 in Jennings Co., Ind., and
died July 01, 1921 in Palestine, Ill..
Notes for JESSE P. CRAVENS:
Jesse is not with Elnora and the children in the 1900 Census, nor is his name on the same
gravestone with Elnora. I have not yet found death cert. or estate papers for him and this
is unusual for this line. Jesse and Elnora seperated for a period of time, shortly after
their marriage. She publicly accused him of infidelity (in very explicit language) and
published in the Robinson Argus that she was seeking a divorce, see notes under Elnora.
Did they reconcile thereafter (Andrew Jackson and Lulu Belle claimed he was their father
and they were born long after these events)? It is a mystery whether he died or was
seperated or divorced from Elnora by 1900. In Lulu's obit in 1920 it is listed that her
mother is still alive but doesn't mention Jesse.
Goldia B. Swanner DeVore knew Lulu's mother's name and Noah's parents names, (they would
have been Goldia's husbands grandparents) but she didn't know Jesse's name.....more
mysteries.....
Notes for ELNORA GANNON: For more on this line see the Gannon's and the
Dailey's
She is buried fairly close to the road on the right side as you come into the graveyard.
On my first trip looking for these graves my Mom (Betty Fasnacht DeVore) said that my
Grandmother (Goldie Swanner DeVore) had always said that we had 'kin' buried in that area.
I went looking, begrudgingly, and found almost the whole Gannon, Cravens and Dailey
family. Even Andrew Winters and his mother my ggg-grandma Margaret Elisabeth Ivey Winters
and her brother John Ivy!!

8. ANNIE EULAN4 CRAVENS (JESSE3, JESSE2, JESSE1) was born July
09, 1862 in Illinois, and died February 03, 1904 in Crawford Co. Ill.. She married BENJAMIN O. ISBELL January
22, 1885 in Crawford Co. Ill., son of THOMAS ISBELL and ELISABETH MILLER. He was born September 02, 1836 in Indiana, and died
January 20, 1918 in Crawford Co. Ill..
Notes for BENJAMIN O. ISBELL:
I am almost certain that this same Benjamin was the one who had done some work for Jesse
and was paid out of Jesse's estate when he died. I suspect that he was related to America
Isbell who was the mother of Jesse's daughter Nancy Jane Cravens Williams. Were America
and Benjamin brother and sister? Benjamin's records claim he was born in Indiana and
America in Kentucky, but this doesn't prove anything either way. At his time of marriage
to Annie, Benj. lists his place of residence as Gatesville, Texas. He states that at the
age of 48 this is his first marriage. UPDATE (10/19/00) Benjamins fathers name was Thomas
Isbell, and I have found a Thomas Isbell in 1830 AND 1840 in Sullivan County, IN!!! This
is the SAME COUNTY that in 1850 I have found Jesse AND HIS WIFE AMERICA ISBEll Cravens.
YEP, I think I've got them. However, I have no proof. And so many questions! Where is
Thomas (and Benjamin et al) in 1850? Are the older children (not listed as heirs in
Jesse's estate later) America's brothers and sisters? And then I have TONS of questions
about America such as when, why and how she died and whether or not she was Jesse's second
wife.
