2. JESSE(2) CRAVENS (JESSE1) was born Bet. 1784 - 1790 in Powell's Valley, and died
1847 in Greene Co., IN. One of my many questions is where in Powell's Valley? Most
of what was called Powell's Valley at the time was a part of VA, but there were also parts
of it in TN, NC and KY. I can't help but wonder if there was a part of Powell's
Valley in early Lincoln Co., KY. See my notes previous under Jesse(1) Anyway,
Jesse(2) married REBECCA TARLTON September 17, 1802 in Ohio Co., KY. She was born Bet.
1784 - 1790, and died Bet. 1840 - 1847 in Greene Co., IN and I am fairly certain that she
was the daughter of a John Tarlton.
Notes for JESSE CRAVENS:
According to the "Early History of Greene Co." (IN) Jesse was "born in
Powell's Valley and came to Sercey's fort in Kentucky and afterwards married Rebecca Jane
Tarleton". This quote proves that Jesse(2) of Ohio Co., KY and Jesse who later came
to Green Co., IN are one and the same person. The children of this marriage, in fact most
of the information surrounding Jesse(2) and Jesse(1) is based on circumstantial evidence.
However, it is the strongest circumstantial evidence I've ever seen and I am
CONVINCED that I am right, however, I wish to caution other researchers.
Anyway, there is no doubt that the Jesse(2) from Ohio Co, KY is the Jesse in Greene Co. There IS a chance that I have some of his kids wrong, even Jesse(3) but I am pretty confident that I've got them right. Every circumstantial fact is a perfect or near perfect fit. Please contact me for more detail.
The "Early History of Greene
Co" (from information supplied by Jesse(2)'s youngest daughter Elisabeth) states that
Rebecca, Jesse(2)'s wife, was the grandaughter of "old General Tarleton,
the tory". It also mentions that Jesse(2) and Rebecca came to Green Co, IN from Ohio
Co, KY in 1835 (which fits). Accoding to this book, they settled in Bloomfield,IN
and had 21 children, 11 boys and 10 girls. So far I have seen no proof of 7 children, but
there could be many that I have been unable to account for, and many that could have died
in childbith. The bio ends by stating "Mr. Cravens died in 1847, in time of the high
water, and was buried at the Joe West farm cemetary in Fairplay township, Greene
County."
Marriage Notes for JESSE CRAVENS and REBECCA TARLTON:
Jesse Cravens(?1?) and John Mosely were bondsmen at Rebecca and Jesse(2)'s wedding. I
believe John Mosely was Rebecca's brother-in-law. Numerous Mosely researchers
have told me that John was married to Mary Jane Tarlton Mosely. I am quite confident
that Mary Jane and Rebecca were related and I strongly suspect that they were sisters, and
that Rebecca's parents were dead. Rebecca could even have been living with the Mosely's at
the time of her marriage to Jesse. Although as yet unproven, I strongly suspect that
the three men, Charles, Robert and Townsend Tarlton were brothers and that they emigrated
first to Illinois and then to Arkansas.

SARAH M. CRAVENS: I don't have the name of the bondsmen when Sarah married nor do I have any kind of bio on her, making her my most likely 'mistake' in this family. On the other hand, she fits by filling in the spot of a missing daughter in the 1830 census and their are no other Cravens in the area at the time likely to be her father. |

for ELISABETH CRAVENS: Elisabeth was the source of the information on this family as reported in the "Early History of Greene Co." She is quoted by the author as having said that her father had had 21 children and that her mother was the grandaughter of the old Tory General Tarleton. She evidently outlived her parents and siblings and though her and her husband adopted, they had no children of their own. |
