By the 1820s and 1830s, I don't find these kinds of provisions in
most Disciplines. Friends bought land at federal land offices just
like non-Quakers. The one case I'm familiar with involving a scruple
is that of Andrew Hoover (1753-1834), one of the first Quaker
settlers in Richmond, Ind. When he left North Carolina for Ohio in
1803, he decided against settling in the Virginia Military District
because, in his son's words, "he did not want to live on land that
had been given to the poor soldiers for killing the poor Indians."
