Palatine
David Strauß - Palatine
David Strauß was baptized on 3 January 1735 in Freyendietz, Nassau-Diez. Today Freyendietz is part of the city Diez in Kreis Rheinpfalz, but in 1735 Freyendietz was an independent city located on the River Lahn in Nassau-Diez. The Princes of Nassau-Diez were hereditary Stadtholders in the Netherlands and there was a great Dutch influence in Nassau-Diez. David Strauß' marriage record in 1761 identifies him as a "hollandisches mousquetier" - Dutch musketeer - not because he was of Dutch heritage, but because the Prince of Nassau-Diez was a hereditary Staatholder of the Netherlands.

David Strauß was the son of Johann Phillips Strauß and Anna Gertraut Luckenbach, daughter of Johann Crist Luckenbach of Emmerichenhain. We find the Strauß family in the late 17th century in Burbach and Lippe near Siegan, then follow Johann Phillips Strauß to Emmerichenhain and Freyendietz where he and Anna Gertraut were both buried in St. Peter's Parish Cemetery. David Strauß is found in Zeppenfeld from 1761 until 1765 when he emigrated with his small family to America.
