The existing records of the Hereford Company for the years 1777 through 1780 consist of the complete 1779 Muster List and the journal kept by Jacob Morgan showing fines collected. The original journal is part of the holdings of the Pennsylvania Archives and includes the number of muster and battalion days missed, the amount of fines assessed and the amount of fines collected. Muster Day was a scheduled date when the militia was to gather and practice by company. Battalion Day was a scheduled day when the militia gathered to practice as a battalion.

Since the 1779 Muster List contains the names of each man in the militia district, I have arranged the information beginning with the 1779 list followed by the information from the original 1777 and 1778 fine book (not the printed version which appears in the published Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, volume 6). The Pennsylvania Archives also includes fines collected in 1779 for the Hereford Company, but it does not contain any names that are not on the complete 1779 muster list.

The Pennsylvania Militia Act of 1777 required every man between the ages of 18 and 53 to be enrolled as part of the militia. It should be noted that the appearance of a name on the muster list, does not necessarily indicate active service in the Revolutionary War. Hereford Township was the home of many Schwenkfelders and Mennonites who were opposed to war; they paid fines rather than participate in militia exercises. Christopher Schultz of the Schwenkfelders made this comment in a letter to Germany in June 1779, "The war party has thus far not succeeded in forcing any of our people to enter the military lines although all males between 18 and 53 were enrolled in the military classes, but exorbitant sums must be paid to escape such service." The recent history of the 1779 muster list is unknown. A transcript of the list was made in 1971 by Raymond E. Hollebach with the following note: "The list is from a photostat copy of the original. The photostat copy is in the Mary Latshaw Bower collection of papers and manuscript material in the Mennonite Historical Society at the Christopher Dock school. Most of the Berks County muster rolls of the Revolution are lost and none are printed in the Pennsylvania Archives. The original from which this photostat was made was located in Kleinman's Bookstore in Philadelphia, about 15 years ago. The present whereabouts are not known. 20 June 1971".  The muster list was discovered folded in an old book approximately 1992 in North Carolina. It is currently in the possession of descendants of David Strauss.
