Their first child, Charles Frederick was born July 25, 1881 in Indiana, prior to their journey by train to relocate in Nebraska in 1884. At the county courthouse, there is a Patent Record of the Homestead Property that required the occupant to live and improve the acreage for five years. Chardon was quite prosperous at that time with a general store, 2 livery stables, a post office, one hotel and 2 saloons.  Albert drove a supply wagon to Colorado. Mary taught school in Chardon in District 10, accompanied by their children after Cora Ann was born October 6, 1886 and Beulah Anita was born September 11, 1889. After the grasshopper invasion in 1890 they traveled by wagon to the Indian Territory where they lived for one year, 15 miles south of Baxter Springs, Kansas, on the Ottawa Indian Reservation. They recounted a long wait to ferry the wagon across the Arkansas river. They returned to Kansas and settled in Wabaunsee County  near Alta Vista in 1891. Hazel Lillian was born on June 1, 1893 and died of pneumonia on February 4, 1895 and she was buried in the field on the farm.
