The data for the Champlin family is taken from a Bible "the Property of S.S. Allen, Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania." The Bible is now in the possession of J. Harrison Holman of Portland, Maine. In a letter to John D. Sisson, Dam Site, Mill River, Massachusetts, dated 28 June 1998, Mr Holman says: "You will recall that I telephoned you a week ago or so regarding your ad in Yankee Magazine and my interest in the Sisson family and their relationship to my first wife, Prudence Williams. Prudence's mother was Llora Champlin. . . . Enclosed are photos of seven pages [from the Bible]. The front page is the one that says, "Esther A. Champlin, Glens Falls, NY" and the second page says, 'The Property of S.S. Allen, Bristol, Bucks Co., Pa.' The additional five pages [of births, marriages, and deaths] were between the Old and New Testaments. I believe that Esther A. Champlin was my first wife's grandmother." But no Llora Champlin is listed in the Bible as a daughter of Esther A. (Sisson) Champlin.

Esther married (MRIN:2416) George CHAMPLIN-5020 on 7 May 1845 in Kingsbury, Washinton Co., New York. George was born on 11 Apr 1817. He died on 10 Nov 1905.

Lineaus D. CHAMPLIN-11553 was born on 3 Mar 1856. He died on 22 Jul 1924.

The data for the Champlin family is taken from a Bible "the property of S.S. Allen, Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania." It is difficult to determine from the Bible whether Helen C. Bell or Lineas D. Champlin died on 22 July 1824.

Lineaus married (MRIN:5009) Florence A. SNEDEKER-11579 on 6 Jun 1882. Florence was born about 1860.

Helen Sisson CHAMPLIN-12627 was born on 6 Jun 1861. She died on 22 Jul 1924 in Glens Falls, New York.

The data for the Champlin family is taken from a Bible "the property of S.S. Allen, Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania." It is difficult to determine from the Bible whether Helen Champlin Bell or Lineas D. Champlin died on 22 July 1824.

Helen married (MRIN:5125) Horace Waite BELL-11916 on 2 Aug 1887 in Glens Falls, New York. Horace was born about 1860. He died on 25 Jul 1906 in Glens Falls, New York.

2598. William SISSON-5021 (Daniel , Nathaniel , William , Jonathan , James , Richard ) was born on 8 Dec 1821. He died on 24 Apr 1892 in Kingsbury, Washington Co., New York.

In the letter from Geo. W. Sisson to Mrs C. W. Durland, William is mentioned as Daniel's heir.  George states that William "never married and did not add to, or quite keep good this property, but was a good reliable honorable man."  George does not mention where this farm was but as James Samuel Sisson was supposed to have been born in Washington County, New York we may assume that this is where the farm was.  He died at age 70 in Kingsbury, New York

He had the following children.

+ 4650 M i James SISSON-33622.

2599. Daniel H. SISSON-8066 (Daniel , Nathaniel , William , Jonathan , James , Richard ) was born on 5 May 1824 in New York State. He died on 28 Dec 1887 in Hubbard, Hardin Co., Iowa. He was buried in New Providence Cemetery, Hardin Co., Iowa.

Daniel H. Sisson, age 26, and Sarah A., his wife, age 23, had a son George W., age 2, in the 1850 census for Kingsbury, Washington County, New York. All three were born in New York. Daniel was elected overseer of highways in Queensbury in 1866-1870 and inspector in 1867. He died in December. Daniel and Sarah's daughter Minnie Dean Sisson may instead have been the daughter of Daniel H. Sisson's sister Mary Elma (Sisson) Dean and her husband Caleb, or of Daniel H. Sisson's father Daniel Sisson. Sources: Kingsbury, Washington County, New York, 1850 census; family Bible of Samuel S. Allen, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Charlotte (Crawford) Chavez wrote Jan 21, 2000, to correct Daniel's data. She quotes Daniel's obituary from the "Eldora Herald," for Thursday, Jan 5, 1888: "Mr Daniel Sisson, an old gentleman residing four miles south of Hubbard, died the fore part of the week."

Daniel married (MRIN:2421) Sarah Ann HAVILAND-5027, daughter of David HAVILAND-11723 and Anna HOAG-13222 (MRIN:2422). Sarah was born about 1839 in New York State. She died on 24 Feb 1897 in Iowa. She was buried in New Providence Cemetery, Hardin Co., Iowa.

They had the following children.

  4651 M i
George W. SISSON-8067 was born about 1848 in Kingsbury, Washington County, New York.
  4652 F ii
Minnie SISSON-11601 was born in 1854. She died on 22 Jun 1912 in New Providence, Hardin Co., Iowa. She was buried in New Providence Cemetery, Hardin Co., Iowa.

Minnie Sisson was not married according to the Sisson Newsletter, v.3, no.5. Minnie may be the daughter of Daniel H. Sisson's sister Mary Elma (Sisson) Dean. Charlotte Chavez found Minnie's obituary: "Minnie Sisson died as N.S. Martin's last Saturday and was laid to rest in the New Providence Cemetery Sunday afternoon." Grandchildren of Sadie Sisson March, Minnie's great-niece, say that Minnie lived with Sadie and her family for years at a time.
+ 4653 M iii William S. SISSON-25738 was born on 1 Oct 1855. He died on 29 Mar 1935 from Cancer of the face..

2600. James Samuel SISSON-5022 (Daniel , Nathaniel , William , Jonathan , James , Richard ) was born on 26 Jan 1826 in Stanford Ridge, Washington Co., New York. He died on 24 Sep 1904 in Conrad, Grundy Co., Iowa. He was buried in Benson Cemetery, Rural Whitten, Iowa.

The Sisson family is listed in the 12th (1900) census of the United States for Grundy County, Felix Township, Iowa, Supervisors District No. 78, Enumeration District No. 42 sheet No. 4, as follows:
Sisson, James; Elmina; Laura; Nellie; Albert and Bertha.
Durland, Charley, Nellie's future husband is listed on the next line.
The birthplace of the father and mother of both James and Elmina is listed as New York.

Obituary of James S. Sisson from The Herald, probably the local newspaper in Conrad, Iowa.
 JAS S. SISSON DIES.
The following obituary should have appeared in the last issue of The Herald, but was unintentionally overlooked:
James S. Sisson was born on June 22, 1826, in Washington county, New York and died at his home in Conrad, September 24, 1904, aged 78 years, 3 months and 2 days.
He remained in New York state until about thirty years of age, or until 1856, when he came to Felix Township, Grundy County, Iowa, where he settled upon a farm which made a home for himself and family until recently.
In 1858 he was married to Miss Anges M. Sweet, daughter of Dr. S. L. and Alzina Sweet.  To this union was born two children, one daughter Ida M. and a son Willie S., both of whom live in Felix township.  Mrs. Agnes M. Sisson died April 8 1864.  In 1805 he married Miss Elmina Sweet.  To this union was born eleven children nine of whom survive.
Mr. Sisson resided upon his farm where he first settled until March, 1902, when he moved to the present home of the family in Conrad, where he ended his life's journey.  Mr Sisson was an industrious, helpful citizen, possessed a jovial disposition, always considerate for the welfare of friends and neighbors.  Those remaining who settled here in an early day know best of his benevolent acts of kindness to those in need.  No one was allowed to want if a sacrifice on his part would relieve his neighbor.
He enjoyed but a few weeks of health in the last few years of life, but was patient while suffering intense pain, and always ready to greet his friends with a kindly look and a smile.  Since the 10th day of last March he has been a constant sufferer from a complication of ailments, any one of which would have proven fatal to persons of less will power and vitality.  All that kind hearts could suggest or willing hands do, was done to alleviate and relieve his agony and comfort him until the end came September 24.
A good man has gone out from among us a quiet, unassuming man that only a few, outside of his family now remaining, that knew him in the prime of life can fully appreciate.  He leaves an unsullied record as an honest, upright man in all his ways.   A. Friend
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Conrad Monday at 10:30 A.M., conducted by Rev. W. M. Lemen and attended by a large congregation of sorrowing friends.  Internment in the family burial lot at Benson cemetery near Whitten, beside two of his children. -Conrad Record. Mrs. C.W. Durland, east of Eldora, is a daughter of deceased.
Note:  The two children he is mentioned as being interred beside him are presumably Mabel Sisson and James Melvin Sisson who are noted as dying in March of 1888.
Everett Eugene Rorer (a grandson of James) states that he believes the Sweet family came from Germany or Switzerland and that the name was originally Sweetizer or Switzer.

James married (MRIN:2417) Anges Minerva SWEET-11807, daughter of Stutley L. SWEET-13157 and Alzine Lucritia-13158 (MRIN:5102), on 2 Sep 1858 in (prob) Felix Township, Grundy County, Iowa. Anges was born on 12 Nov 1839 in Avon, Lorain Co., Ohio. She died on 8 Sep 1864 in Albion, Marshall Co., Iowa. She was buried in Albion Cemetery, Albion, Marshall Co., Iowa.

They had the following children.

+ 4654 F i Ida Minnie SISSON-12803 was born on 10 Oct 1861.
+ 4655 M ii Willie S. SISSON-11993 was born on 13 Feb 1863. He died on 19 Dec 1941.

James also married ( 2:MRIN:2418) Elmina Woud SWEET-11925, daughter of Stutley L. SWEET-13157 and Alzine Lucritia-13158 (MRIN:5102), on 1 Jan 1865 in Albion, Marshall County, Iowa. Elmina was born on 23 Oct 1845 in Clay, Lagrange Co., Indiana. She died on 23 Jun 1915 in Conrad, Grundy Co., Iowa.

Elmina Woud Sweet was a younger sister of Anges Minerva Sweet, James S. Sisson's first wife.  Everett Rorer (her grandson) believes that Sweet was originally Sweetzer or Swetzer.  He is reasonably sure that they came from Germany but does not recall where.

Obituary of Elmina Woud Sweet, possibly from the Conrad Herald:
Elmina W. Sweet, the second daughter of Dr. S. L. and Alzina Sweet was born in Clay, Lagrange county Indiana, October 23, 1845, passing away at her home in Conrad, June 23 1915, at the age of 69 years and 8 months. She came west with her parents in October, 1854, who settled in Albion, Iowa, when she was about ten years of age.  Here she grew to young womanhood, receiving her early education at the old Albion Seminary.  In 1865, she was married to James S. Sisson, in Albion, Marshall County (Iowa).
Mr. and Mrs. Sisson immediately moved onto the husband's farm in Felix Township, Grundy County, where they continued to reside until 1901, when they retired from active farm life taking up their residence in Conrad.
Mr. Sisson passed beyond only three years later, September 24, 1904.  To this union were born eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, nine of whom survive their parents:  Mrs. Minnie B. Stevenson of Conrad; Mrs. Hattie Green, of Troy, Penn.; Mrs. Nettie Shaw, of Kemare, North Dakota; Charley Sisson, who lives on the old homestead; Mrs. Laura Rorer of Minneapolis; Mrs. Clara Nellie Durland, Nicolette, Minn.; Albert Sisson and Mrs. Bertha Ol Krueger, of Kiester, Minn.; and Mrs Olive Godfrey, of Lake Crystal, Minn.  One daughter and one son, Mabel and James, died in early childhood.  In addition to these Mrs Sisson reared and cared for as her own two step-children; Mrs Ida Knisley of Beaman, and William S. Sisson of Conrad.  One brother Clark O. Sweet, of Danville, Ill., and thirty-two grandchildren also survive her.
The deceased's father, Dr. S. L. Sweet, gave to his daughter a good education, which enabled her to become one of the pioneer teachers of Grundy county.  She taught in many private homes before the public school houses were build.
Mother Sisson was converted in early life and in 1884 united with the Felix Center Methodist Episcopal church.  On coming to Conrad she united with the class at this place during the pastorate of the Rev. W. H. Clement, April 6 1902.  She was especially interested in the work of the church in the foreign field.  She was a charter member and president for many years, of the Women's Foreign Missionary society at Felix Center.
This society supported an orphan girl in India who was named "Mina Felix," in honor of Mrs. Sisson.  Mrs. Sisson also supported a boy in India, herself for some years.
A loving mother and a good true woman who has proven her faith by her works has gone from our view, but the devoted work she has accomplished for her Master and her church, will live on through all time.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. D. Stubbs, pastor.  Many old friends and neighbors were present to pay their last respects to the memory of a dear friend.  The members of the W. F. M. S. attended the service in a body.  The singing was by Mrs. EON Ecklund, Miss. Elsie Stover, Bard St Clair and E.L. Guild.  The pall bearers were John Morrow, Jr., J.H. Early, Mel Stewart, M.H. Steelsmith, W. II. Alexander and N. Klinefetter.  Beautiful floral offerings from W.F.M.S. Ladies' Aid and friends guarded the casket.

They had the following children.

Albert SISSON-6920 was born on 27 Oct 1878 in Felix Twp, Grundy Co., Iowa. He died on 1 Jul 1950 in Albert Lea, Freeborn Co., Minnesota.

According to Everett Rorer, Albert remained a lifelong bachelor.  He had a small, 30 acre, farm, in Nicolette, Minnesota, on which was a large barn.  He converted part of the barn into crude living quarters and lived there until his death. According to Mildred Kruger Grady, albert died in his home.  He was found by a neighbor who stopped by, he was lying on the floor.  He apparently had had a heart attack!
Mildred wrote of Albert:  "The house I lived in my first 8 years was on the Minnesota-Iowa state line, south of Kiester (Minn).  Albert farmed a mile or 2 south east of our farm.  Albert, when young, was very good to us kind.  In winter he took us for rides & sometimes to Sunday School in a fancy little cutter (sleigh) with a young horse.  Later Albert owned a place Northwest of us, between Bricely and Kiester.  He raised sheep & sold wool & also had some horses and some geese.  Later gravel pits were discovered on his property and much gravel was mined for county roads.
Everett Rorer, relates that he, his brother and mother had to live with Albert for a time.  Laura, his mother, did not know that Albert had no house nor that he lived away from any town, until they arrived there late one night.  She had no food for the children and no transportation. Somehow though they survived to join Clinton in Minneapolis.

To My Cousin
    Mrs C. W. Durland
         Fredrick, So. Dacota:

I thank you for your letter received this week.  I think it is near twelve years since with my daughter Grace we visited at your Fathers at the farm, a few miles from Conrad Iowa, where he afterward moved.  He took us a ride into Conrad.  We were glad to have made that visit and to note the prosperous condition which Cousin James had secured by his own work and good management and I knew that our visit pleased him.  As a boy I visited Uncle Daniel Sisson and his boys and had good times.  In his will he made me Executor of his Estate with his son William.  So you can see the intimate relation Existing between our families, Uncle Daniel had a fine farm of 20 acres, no waste land, to which William succeeded.  William never married and did not add to, or quite keep good this property, but was a good reliable honorable man.  I do not know anything of your brothers.  I received a newspaper with the notice of your Sister Bertha's marriage, and acknowledged it.  I have received an occasional letter from Mrs. Rorer & replied to them.  As for yourself and your Husband, I judge you have firm priories, something as our forefathers were two to four generations before, and while there is much work and some privation, I have no doubt there is as much real genuine happiness as is found in any walk of life.  Honest industry with temperance & good habits brings it's sure reward.  You have a wealth of comfort and genuine happiness in your fine children; and I believe your husband rejoices with you, though a  mothers love is the stronger for her offspring.  Grace is unmarried and assumes charge of the house.  I am now in my 84th year since birth.  My wife who has been my companion this past 58 years is 78, & we have to admit we are old people though enjoying life.  My oldest daughter and five sons now ??????? & we have 21 grandchildren.  The daughter Mrs E. R Saffrd lives in Glen Falls, NY where he is City Judge.  My sons all live near & are active business men & our house is a common place of meeting.  We wish to be kept informed of you & Yours & wish you health & happiness & your husband the reward of both brawn and brain in his every effort.  With regards of
Geo W. Sisson
    and Mrs Sisson
         & Grace
