In 1888 Justin Hinkley Sisson named the town of Sisson, California, for himself and his family. Before 1888 it had been called Berryvale, and in 1924 its name was changed to Mount Shasta City. Cousin Bob Evans sent me, David Arne Sisson, copies of some material sent to him from several Siskiyou, California, organizations. Many of the town's businesses are still named for J.H. Sisson: Sisson Lodge of the Masonic Order, Sisson Elementary School, and the Sisson Museum. Mrs Dorothy W. Park, a descendant of J.H. Sisson, lived at some point between 1981 and 1995 at 805 Douglas Lane, Mt Shasta, CA 96067.

According to "The Sissons," an article from "The Siskiyou Pioneer" published by the Siskiyou County Historical Society in 1981: "As an infant [Justin Hinkley Sisson] was moved to New York. His father later bought a farm near Galesburg, Illinois. J.H. Sisson attended Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. He did post-graduate work at Knox College near Galesburg. After college he taught school for a while. He was too much an athlete to be satisfied with that type of life. He was an excellent horseman and marksman. The cry of "Gold in California!" brought J.H. Sisson via ship around the Horn to California in March 1850. He just missed being a 49'er. He mined gold for a while in the Grass Valley-Nevada City area. He left Grass Valley to go north in the spring of 1853 against the advice of some of his friends - 'There were too many unruly Indians in the northern part of the state.' He was accompanied by an Indian boy that he had gotten to know around the camps."

Justin returned to Ohio about 1860, at the time of his father's death. There he met and married his wife. They "honeymooned in Chicago while they were being outfitted for the journey [to California]. They set out across the plains on April 8, 1861, arriving in Berryvale on September 8, 1861, exactly six months later." They lived in several locations in Berryvale before "acquiring the first hotel in 1866 or 1867 that was known as 'Sisson's.... Justin Hinckley Sisson was known as a mountain guide, hunter, fisherman, marksman, and for his philanthropies. He was very enterprising. He reclaimed the swamp he had acquired and raised hay; served as a guide for the hunters, fishermen and scientists that came to the area; contracted with the government to carry a Geological Monument to the summit of Mt Shasta; raised trout for the guests of the hotel; acquired land at the bend of the McCloud River to take his guests to; and, finally, he contracted with the railroad to come to the Mt Shasta area and start the town of Sisson. It was known that he donated the land for the first school.... Part of the agreement was that the names of the streets were to carry the names of members of his family, i.e., Jessie and Ivy streets were his daughters; Alma Street, his wife's sister; Field Street, after his wife's maiden name, etc. His health began to decline, and he lost an eye to cancer. His San Francisco Chronicle obituary said "He knew more of the secrets of Mt Shasta than any living man. He had made the ascent to the summit scores of times and was an invaluable guide to those desirous of climbing the mountain. He knew the habitats of the grizzly bear and had shown his marksmanship many times in battle with this ferocious beast." Not long after his death 19 Nov 1893, at the age of 67, the hotel burned down, and his wife Lydia built a second one and ran it with the help of their sons Will and Norman until it was sold in 1910.

According to John D. Sisson, Justin is also known to have rescued John Muir, the famed naturalist, from a snowstorm on Mt. Shasta.

Justin married (MRIN:1557) Lydia Maria FIELD-2925, daughter of Norman FIELD-11825 and Happalonia CHATTERDON-12338 (MRIN:1563), on 26 Mar 1861 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Lydia was born on 29 Dec 1837 in Cornwall, Addison Co., Vermont. She died on 6 Apr 1917 in San Francisco Bay area.

Lydia Maria Field was a school teacher, beginning at age 15. At the time of her marriage, she was teaching near Knoxville. After Justin's death, Lydia built and ran a new hotel until 1910. Then she moved to the San Francisco Bay area, after a cruise to the South Pacific with her son Norman, to be near her daughter Ivy Shebley.
