From the April 30, 1999, Los Angeles Times: Sisson, David Merritt, passed away on Tuesday, April 27th, 1999 in Hermosa Beach, at home and at peace. Born in Potsdam, N.Y. on November 27, 1922 and a 49-year resident of Hermosa Beach, he is survived by eight children, 23 grandchildren and four (and counting) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Catherine Fitzpatrick, 3 years ago. Dave met Mary as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps and she kept him in Los Angeles where he graduated from USC in 1947. Highlights of Dave's military career include serving with the 5th Marine Division which landed on day one at Iwo Jima and he personally witnessed both monumental flag raisings on Mt Suribachi. He founded Grocers Weekly Guide, an innovative pricing service, for the supermarket industry, employing his children and their friends and working from the home. For the last 25 years, he has helped the hearing imparied throught his business Hermosa Hearing Aids, Inc (A fixture on Pier Avenue). His Catholic faith was important to him and his vast family. Co-founder of the Loyal Benevolent Protective Order of the 3-Toed Sloths and aoriginator of the Annual Rocky Point + Hermosa Beach Memorial day Trek (now in its 31st year), Dave Sisson was a local institution in himself, patriarch, bodysurfing instructor, original beach jogger and second father and friend to many. Memorial Mass at American Martyrs Catholic church in Manhattan Beach at 3 PM, Friday, April 30th. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or donate blood in his name through the Knights of Columbus.
