Max Augustus SISSON Jr.-528 was born on 7 May 1912 in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York. He died about 1988 in Palisade, Mesa Co., Colorado.

A handwritten paper (by Vicki Lee Sisson Green?) sent in 1998 to David Arne Sisson by Jeanne Sisson, wife of Bill Sisson, Vicki's brother says: "Max A Sisson came to western Colorado after graduating from Colorado A & M in 1934. He was an entomologist and plant pathologist with the USDA and the Colorado Department of Agriculture until 1974. Max helped eradicate the peach mosaic disease which was threatening to wipe out the entire local peach industry. The project in the late 1930's and early 1940's involved first identifying the diseased trees and those which carried the disease. They were destroyed by removal and burning. Thousands of peach trees were destroyed; entire orchards were put to the torch. Some growers were financially wiped out. Max purchased his first orchard on East Orchard Mesa in 1936. It was adjoining the old East Orchard Community Center. In 1956, he and his wife Dorothy purchased additional orchards one mile east of Palisade. Here he raised peaches and other fruits until his death in 1988. Upon his death, his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jeanne Sisson, took over the orchards. Sisson Orchards were sold in the spring of 1994 to Kay and Lee Ambrose, and are now known as the Ambrose Family Farm. This sale enabled Bill [Max's son] to devote full time to his banking career at Mesa National Banks." A clipping from _The Palisade Tribune_, July 7, 1988: "Rolltop Ramblings," by Bill Conrad: "Taps has sounded for Max Sisson. The mournful notes rang out last Friday for the man who was for years the official bugler of the local Legion post even though he was not himself a Legionnaire. Max's death came as a shock to the community, and his memorial service drew a packed crowd to the Methodist church. We understand he suffered a broken leg in a fall while walking his dogs and lay on the ground helpless for some length of time before found. Apparently a blood clot later led to his death at the hospital where he was to undergo surgery. As might be expected, the remembrances of Max expressed at the funeral were poignant. But there was one that said so much about Max's very place in this community. It was a statement by his daughter, quoted by the minister, to the effect that now Max would not have to burn anyone's orchards any more. I recall hearing Max testify last summer about how he had come to this valley to help eradicate the peach mosaic disease which was threatening to wipe out the entire local peach industry. This project in the late 1930s and early 1940s involved first identifying the diseased trees and those which carried the disease and then destroying them by removal and burning. Thousands of peach trees were destroyed; entire orchards were put to the torch. We're told some growers were financially wiped out. Last year when it was realized the quarantine against importation of trees which are known carriers of the peach mosaic disease had been inadvertently lifted by the state, there was near panic among some local growers. At that time, someone recalled the eradication effort which resulted in eventual control of the disease in Mesa County and Max Sisson's role in the project. The statement was made then that there were still some in the Valley who had never forgiven Max for having had a part in destruction of their orchards. At Max's funeral, the minister noted that Max had had a hard job to do but he had done it and done it well. What courage it must have taken for this man to remain in Palisade despite all those hard feelings, to settle down here, have his own orchard, raise his family, become a pillar of the community in just about every sense of that old phrase! There may have been old grudges still, but to most of us, Max Sisson was something special, whether we were just visiting with him at a chamber of commerce luncheon or hearing his trumpet, especially when he played Taps on Memorial Day. His last bugle call has sounded over the Valley, but its notes linger on."
