Frank M. Sisson Dies on Foreign Battle Field

Gallatin county has contributed at least one citizen to the ceaseless call from life to death that rings over the battlefields in the great European war. That much was learned last Monday, when Geo. W. Sisson, of Sugar Creek received a telgram apprising him of the death of his son, Frank M. Sisson, which occurred at Etaples on last Saturday, April 29. The telegram received by Mr. Sisson follows:

"Ottawa, Ontario, Canada,
April 30, 1916

Geo. W. Sisson,
Warsaw, Ky.

Deeply regret to inform you A-40292, Private Frank Sisson, infantry, officially reported died of wounds, St. John's Hospital, Etaples, April 29. Severe contusions.

Signed: Record Office"

Young Sisson enlisted in the European war with the allies about one year ago, and it is supposed his enlistment occurred in Canada, as he was known to be a member of the Canadian Grenadiers. Last Thanskgiving his sister, Miss Clara Sisson, received from him through the mails a pictorial history of the Fifth Canadian Grenadiers, gotten up attractively in the form of a souvenir with pictures of the officers, camp scenes and other incidents of the soldiers life. On the back of the package addressed to Miss Clara was this inscription: "F. M. S. - At the Front." That was the only mark of identification as to the sender of the brochure, but as the initials were those of Miss Sisson's brother, she at once knew who had sent it.

Since that time nothing had been heard from Frank, and his family was uncertain as to whether he was living or had fallen as had so many others in the great maelstrom of death that had swept over the battle fields of Europe during the past two years. It is thought, from the location of the hospital from which the telegram apprising his father of young Sisson's death was sent, that he had met death or rather had fallen from the wounds which produced death on the battle fields of France, as many of the wounded in the Etaples hospital had been brought from the firing line along the French battle fields.

Frank Sisson attended school in Warsaw about eight years ago and is remembered by many of our people. Shortly after that he went to Illinois and for several years was engaged in farming in the Western states, prvious to his going to Canada and enlisting in the Canadian infantry. He was 26 years of age, and his death only affords another instance - this time brought closer to home - of the exaction of death that is required of young and healthful manhood in the present great struggle where murderous ambition rides o'er the crushed and mangled bodies of the dying and the dead - where, poor, deluded humanity pays the awful toll - just as humanity has ever done and ever will.
