Henry enlisted 14 Aug 1862 as a private and was mustered into Federal Service 21 Aug 1862 with Company I, 19th Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He served with this unit, primarily in Missouri, until he became sick with pneumonia. He reenlisted 4 July 1863 as 5th Corporal in Company B, 8th Iowa Cavalry Volunteers. He was taken prisoner 30 July 1864 at Newnan, Georgia, and was imprisoned in Andersonville for nine months and five days, until approximately 4 April 1865. The records of the Adjutant General of Iowa indicate he was paroled and promoted to the rank of Fourth Corporal on 12 Dec 1864.
