Mary's grave marker states "Mary Sisson/ widow of/ Richard Sisson/ died ___ 20 1829/ in the 81st year of/ her age./

97. Gilbert SISSON-2374 (George , George , Richard ) was born¹ on 15 Aug 1730 in Swansea, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. He died before 1809 in Somerset, Bristol Co., Massachusetts.

Gilbert and Mary were married by Robert Lawton, Asst. During the Revolutionary War Gilbert was the master of the 16-ton schooner "Barton" with ten cannon and 25 men. He had orders from the governor to "prey upon British shipping on the high seas wheresoever you see fit." Gilbert's will was dated Feb 26, 1806 but was not proved until July 4, 1817, well after his death. It mentions his wife Mary, daughters Susanna Luther and Mary Luther, son Isaac and grandchildren Lydia and Gilbert Sisson, children of Isaac.

Gilbert married (MRIN:1326) Mary SISSON-2546, daughter of James SISSON-35 and Deborah COOK-36 (MRIN:37), on 22 Sep 1754. Mary was born on 26 May 1724 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. She died on 13 May 1809 in Somerset, Massachusetts.

Mary is mentioned in her husband's will, written in 1786 and proved in 1787.

105. Giles SISSON-418 (Thomas , George , Richard ) was born in 1715 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He died about 1790 in Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., New York.

Giles Sisson's date of birth may have been about 1715, in Portsmouth or Newport, Rhode Island, but those data have not been proven. He is thought to have died in Stephentown, New York, or in Albany County, New York. He, his wife Elizabeth, and their family moved to Westerly, RI, and then, after 1761, to New York State. They lived on the River Road above Unadilla before 1808. After Giles' death, some members of his family moved on to Indiana. There is a will, found by Carol Sisson Regehr in 1998, of a Giles Sisson (not necessarily this one) made in 1811 in Herkimer County, New York. Giles married (MRIN:118) Elizabeth-461 in 1745/1746 in Newburyport, , Rhode Island. Elizabeth was born about 1725 in Newburyport, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

Elizabeth's name may have been Elizabeth Arnold. She moved with her husband Giles Sisson and their family from Westerly, RI, to Unadilla, NY. Elizabeth's death date and place have been reported as July 23, 1811, in Abraham, Indiana, [from Olsen's book "Ancestry and Descendants of Ezra Sisson"] however this is doubtful as the move of some family members to Indiana did not take place until 1818. Elizabeth is possibly a great-granddaughter of Benedict Arnold I, the first colonial governor of Rhode Island. This Benedict Arnold I was also the great-grandfather, through another line, of Benedict Arnold IV, the general in the American Revolution who defected to the British side. Benedict Arnold I is also an ancestor of American Presidents George Bush (41st president) and James Garfield (20th president).

106. William SISSON-419 (Thomas , George , Richard ) was born about 1717 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He died on 16 Aug 1775 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island.

William Sisson was admitted as a freeman in Westerly, Rhode Island, in Novemember 1737. He inherited land from his father and was a farmer in Stonington, Connecticut. He and his wife Hannah were living in Westerly in 1774. William's will was signed on 16 August 1775 and it was proved 27 September 1775. His death occurred between those two dates. He left two-thirds of his household goods, the east part of his home including the "great room chamber garret" and cellar, plus one cow and sidesaddle to his wife, his sons to provide firewood, etc. His daughters Abigail Kimball and Hannah Maxson were left the remaining household goods. William married (MRIN:325) Hannah MULLINS-422 about 1737 in Rhode Island. Hannah was born about 1716 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. She died after 1758 in Rhode Island.

William Sisson's wife's name was Hannah, but I have found no record of her maiden surname other than the Ancestral File which only links her to William Sisson without giving sources. See "Pioneers: Unadilla Village, NY."
