Generation No. 1

1. Richard1 Elkins was born Abt. 1735 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1801 in Tazewell County, Virginia.

Notes for Richard Elkins: Ralph Elkin, Jr., Richard Elkin, Jr., Nathaniel, Jessee & James of Leatherwood all appearing in tax lists of Pittsylvania Co. in 1767. (Source: 1767 Pittsylvania Co, VA. Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. 4, Page 189).

1779 Survey of Henry Co, VA, Jun 10, 1779, by John Dickinson, page 146; Elkins- Richard, Ralp, Jessey are on the New River. (Source: 1777 Botetourt Co, VA Tax list by Wm Ingles, Vol X, Dec. 1966; a periodical).

(See Drury Elkins from 1783 to 1790 as Richard appears on the Montgomery Co, VA tax list along with his sons, Drury, Zachariah, & Richard Jr. Then into Russell Co, VA.

We find in 1783 a purchase of 179 acres on a court plea with Wm Weathers/Whithers. Is Weathers his mother's maiden name? The land is deeded to him in 1789.

1793 - Has residence at Walkers & Wolf Creeks, Clear Fork of Wolf Creek - (Source: Tax List B, Wythe Co., VA)

A new theory on Richard's parents, we find the deed above mentioned, is it an estate settlement? Back in 1750 a Samuel Withers died leaving an estate. His wife, Sarah Withers was named executor, with a John Elkins signing as security. Did John marry Samuel and Sarah Withers' daughter? Did Sarah Withers die in 1772 when the suit (this is what it was referred to) against William Withers and Richard Elkins of Montgomery-Washington Co, VA. It is likely William and Richard were cousins and Samuel and Sarah were their grandparents. Both grandparents are now deceased and this is a settlement of the property that formerly belonged to Samuel and Sarah Withers. Therefore, John Elkins would have been married to a Withers, and therefore, John and _____ (Withers) Elkins would be the parents of Richard Elkins. If the records weren't so scant in this period of time, we would know when Sarah Withers died.

Children of Richard Elkins are:

+ 2 i. James2 Elkin, Sr, born April 16, 1755 in Henry County, Virginia; died July 1836 in Clark County, Kentucky.

+ 3 ii. Drury Elkins, born Abt. 1760 in Tazewell County, Virginia; died Aft. 1840 in Jackson County, Indiana.

+ 4 iii. Zachariah Elkins, born Abt. 1764 in Tazewell County, Virginia; died Aft. 1850 in Boone County, West Virginia.

+ 5 iv. Richard Elkins, Jr., born Abt. 1770 in Tazewell County, Virginia; died March 26, 1854 in Logan County, Virginia.

+ 6 v. William Elkins, born Abt. 1772 in Virginia; died in Virginia.

+ 7 vi. Elijah Elkins, born Abt. 1775 in Virginia; died Unknown in Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. James2 Elkin, Sr (Richard1 Elkins) was born April 16, 1755 in Henry County, Virginia, and died July 1836 in Clark County, Kentucky. He married Martha JacksonSeptember 23, 1782 in Washington County, Virginia.

Notes for James Elkin, Sr:

James Elkin Sr. Family bible (see Elkins Family Research Workbook, Volume II, Page 347.

James Elkin has lots of documentation on his family. Not on his parentage. It seems he is closely related to our line, Drury Elkins. Also James & Martha sell land in the same area as old Richard Elkins does before coming to Clark Co, KY where Drury first arrives also. One researcher felt he was a direct line of James Elkins of Virginia. I feel he is really in Richard's line. This may be in error??? np

Notes for Martha Jackson: James Elkin family bible records. See Elkins Family Research Workbook, Volume II, Page 347. (publ by C Stultz, (1994)

Children of James Elkin and Martha Jackson are:

19 xii. Elizabeth Elkin, born April 17, 1811 in Clark County, Kentucky; died Unknown in Clark County, Kentucky. She married Robert Richardson December 14, 1832 in Clark County, Kentucky.

3. Drury2 Elkins (Richard1) was born Abt. 1760 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1840 in Jackson County, Indiana. He married Margaret Abt. 1778 in Virginia. Notes for Drury Elkins: The earliest line we have been able to find on our Elkins. There is a possibility his father is Richard Elkins of early Montgomery County, Virginia, but as of this time (1996) we have been unable to find any proof. Following is what we have found to lead us to this conclusion:

1783 Census/Tax List of Washington County, Virginia

1787 Virginia Tax Lists of Virginia, by Nettie Schreiner-Yantis (1991)

Montgomery County, Virginia. (books within my library)

Richard Elkins July 7, 1787 2 white tithbls 2 horses 4 cattle

Archibald Elkins Sep 10,1787 1 black 3 horses 15 cattle

Russell County was formed from parts of Washington & Montgomery Counties when an election was held in 1785 when Wm Russell & Andrew Kincannon elected to represent Washington Co. to form Russell. This petition was taken Dec 9th, 1785, with James, Jesse and Drury Elkins signing to form the county.

1789 Montgomery County, Virginia Tax List (transcribed and edited by Nettie Schreiner-Yantis, 1972)

Dated 1790 Feb 20th

Zachariah Elkins* 2 horses

Drury Elkins 3 horses

Richard Elkins, Sr. 1 horse

Richard Elkins, Jr. 2 horses

* a person of this name appeared in the 1788 list with no male 16-21yrs, no slaves.

By 1790, Drury, Zachariah, Richard Sr and Richard Jr are all found in Russell County, VA. All this leads us to believe that Old Richard Elkins is the probable father of Drury.

Another clue is Drury's oldest son is named Richard, he has another son Jesse and of course, William, our direct line. The Richard is probably a name taken from his father, Richard.

Drury moves to Clark County, Kentucky where his older daughter married Samuel Stogdill in 1799. However, in 1790 we find Drury residing in Pulaski County, Kentucky, also 1800, 1810 and 1820. By 1830 he resides in Jackson County, Indiana, residing close to William and right next door to Jesse. By 1840 he and Jesse reside in Jackson County and William now lives in Brown County, Indiana (Brown County formed from Jackson, Co). See following tax lists in Pulaski County KY and then census of Jackson:

Notes for Margaret: We have never learned Margaret's sur-name (1996). We keep searching, however. Clues indicate it may be Asberry? Francis Elkins had a son, William Asberry Elkins. Also the names of Pettyjohn and Sanders show up within the Pulaski County, KY tax records on property owned by Drury/Drewry Elkins, also Jesse Elkins.

If we go to the 1787 Russell Co, VA tax list by Yantis, we find Hatfields' and Mullens' living close to Drury. There is also, in the area but not right next to Drury, Asberrys' and we do know that Drury and Margaret's son, Richard and his wife, Rhoda named a son, William Asberry Elkins. However, we must realize this could also be a sur-name on Rhoda's side of the family. You will note that the Jackson and Brown Co, IN Elkins that are direct descendants of Drury and Margaret, named a son, Drury. Also their daughters. That is the reason that I have always felt that there is a missing daughter and she married James Acton. They had a son, Drury Acton along with a Richard.

Children of Drury Elkins and Margaret are:

+ 20 i. Richard3 Elkins, born Abt. 1779 in Montgomery County, Virginia; died 1815 in Kentucky.

+ 21 ii. Mary Polly Elkins, born Abt. 1780 in Virginia; died in Indiana.

+ 22 iii. Martha Elkins, born Abt. 1781 in Montgomery County, Virginia; died Abt. 1851 in Jackson County, Indiana.

+ 24 v. William Elkins, born 1796 in Pulaski County, Kentucky; died September 02, 1880 in Brown County, Indiana.

+ 25 vi. Rebecca Elkins, born Abt. 1801 in Pulaski County, Kentucky; died Aft. 1860 in Jackson County, Indiana.

4. Zachariah2 Elkins (Richard1) was born Abt. 1764 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Boone County, West Virginia. He married Rachel Ann Smith Abt. 1785 in Montgomery County, Virginia.

Children of Zachariah Elkins and Rachel Smith are:

+ 26 i. Levina3 Elkins, born Abt. 1793 in Montgomery County, Virginia; died Aft. 1870 in Boone County, West Virginia.

5. Richard2 Elkins, Jr. (Richard1) was born Abt. 1770 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and died March 26, 1854 in Logan County, Virginia. He married Nancy Leslie December 04, 1787 in Montgomery County, Virginia, daughter of William Leslie and Elizabeth Buchanan. Notes for Richard Elkins, Jr.:

Per Elkins Family Exchange Newsletter (Issue 14, Nov 1984); Page 70. West Virginia Families The Elkins Families of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan and Wayne Counties, Virginia, compiled by Barbara Martin Thompson (Editor of above)

Richard Elkins is in following tax lists which may help follow him:

1796-1798 Wythe Co, VA

1801, 1802 Tazewell Co, VA

1806 Kanawha Co, VA

1815 Cabell & Tazewell Co, VA

1820 Census Cabell Co, VA

1824, 1827, 1833, 1835, 1837

Logan Co, VA (Later West Virginia)

1830, 1840, 1850 Logan Co, VA Census

In Issue 9 Aug 1983 Page 31; an Anthelia Elkins is listed, born abt 1829, md Nov 14, 1879 to Jefferson Mullins. Listed as a child of Richard Jr. Not listed as this may be in error. Possibly she is the daughter of Richard & the Rebecca Elkins that show up in Logan Co, VA. She is 67 yrs old and Anthelia is within their household as is D. K. Elkin; This may be a dau-in-law as little D. K. is only 4months old?

Notes for Nancy Leslie: In 1850, we find a Rebecca living with Richard Jr. and she is much to young to be the mother of any of his children. We believe he re-married. The census was taken from EFEN, and we assume he remarried since the census we had was annotated and gave this Rebecca's name as Rebecca (Leslie)?

Guardianship Index Book I - Infant heirs of Richard Elkins, dec'd: Francis, Thomas and Nancy Elkin - Book 3 Page 245

I did not see this book as the clerk told me in Pulaski Co that all the old record books are at the state capitol. This is still sufficient to prove the names of Richard's children. (Pulaski County, KY Court Records 1799-1818, on micro-film within my files/cs) Notes for Rhoda Stephens: It is likely that Rhoda is also buried at Thompson Cemetery, no stone, due to the fact that William is buried there also.

She married George Isaac Shortridge February 17, 1820 in Pulaski County, Kentucky, son of Andrew Shortridge and Sarah Garrison. Notes for George Isaac Shortridge: Per data received from the Shortridge family, it is likely that Isaac is really "George Isaac Shortridge". This George married 1st Dicey Elkins. We are listing this family group as we are certain that George married 2) Rebecca Elkins at Pulaski County, KY in 1810 with Drury Elkins signing for Rebecca. We have never located an Isaac in Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana or Tennessee. He must be George Isaac. Since this couple married in 1820, it seems they should have been in the 1820 Pulaski County, KY census, but never found. Also, there is no young marrieds within either Drury Elkins' or Andrew Shortridge's households, which would be the 2 places they may have lived if not listed in the census?

According to the 1810 census, George & his wife had a male under 10yrs. We assumed this was Isaac and he was close to 10 yrs old. We have later learned this is in error.

No particulars on the shooting were given but Mr Elkins left on the 3:45 train to attend his bedside and a letter received from him yesterday states that the young man cannot recover. Young Elkins is well known in Bloomington and visited here recently. He has been working with a construction gang on the Southern Indiana Railway until only a few weeks ago and he went to Heltonville to draw his pay. He is a married man but has not been living with his wife for some time.
