USGenWeb Within this project are sites hosted by volunteers for states and counties all over the USA. See what is available for your county, contribute to the archives, or post a query for everyone to see. As with all websites, these are only as good as their administrator. Most do a great job and are genuinely happy to hear from you. I've only run across one who wasn't. I very politely volunteered to take over that site if help was needed, since it hadn't been changed in several years and had meager content. Of course, I didn't tell him how I or others felt, just that I would help. The fellow, who jealously lords over several such sites, attacked me mercilessly and accused me of intending copyright infringement and of wanting to turn it into my private genealogy page. Others have since shared with me their own experiences. Unfortunately, those he answers to have chosen to ignore all requests to solve the problem. Such a pity.
WorldGenWeb The same as USGenWeb, but for countries around the world.

National Archives and Records Administration This is the place to go if you don't live close to a repository of census records, or if the hours at your FHC are too restrictive for your needs.
You can also request forms for ordering copies of the pension and military records of your ancestors. Go to Veteran Service Records area and click on the links to order NATF Form 85 or 86 (or another form). The forms are mailed to you free of charge. You need one form for each name. Fill it out and mail it in. If they find something, they'll send it to you. It was $37 the last time I ordered a full pension file. If they don't find anything, you don't pay. It will take several weeks, but the wait is well worth it. Pension claimants may be the soldier himself, or his surviving spouse or parents. Genealogical info is often included. There is usually a physical by a doctor. Sizes of files vary, but I received one an inch thick due to a nationwide investigation to prove that the claimant was the legal widow of the soldier.
