1. "Uncle" David JOY

Narragansett Historical Publishing Company. 1894. p. 26. Joy, David m. Allen , Elizabeth by Joseph Allen, Justice Dec. 1, 1747. The Intention of this marriage can be found in this same series, in the book of Rehoboth, Ma. Vital Records. p.467. [Vol. no. missing in this particular book]. Joy, David and Alllen, Elizabeth, both of Rehoboth. March 1,1745-46. To the answer why two town records, it may because of this information . Jan. 27, 1468-47. There was an act incorporating the five towns secured from Mass. in the General Assembly at Providence, Rhode Island. "And a small part of Rehoboth thereto adjoining, with the inhabitants thereon, be incorporated into a township by the name of Warren. This was located in Vol. 6 of the Warren genealogy information mentioned above."

He and his wife raised three of his sister Sarah Joy Perry's four children after her death (see _Recollections of an Old Soldier_ by Capt. David Perry). David Perry's memoir records that his uncle David Joy treated his nephew with great kindness, both then and later in life (see

David Joy served as a Lieutenant [see Voyes, _Mass. Officers_] Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in 1745 under Gen. William Pepperell in King George's War.

2) 1800 [Fabius,] Onondaga, NY census lists 1 male -10, 2 males 10-16, 2 females -10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+ and one slave. David Joy listed as head of house but not marked? Is this David's son David (he would be 46)?

3) DAR Vol 106, p. 187, rec 105594, Mrs. Grace Joy Mac Donald. Says he served in the French and Indian War and was at the taking of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. Said to have been a platoon officer under Gen. Ruggles (Source: T. Joy Desc. p, 74). But this was in 1759, when Ruggles was a Col. In 1775, Ruggles, a loyalist, left Boston with the British troops. David Joy's son David served as a soldier of the Revolution from July 17 to Dec 19, 1775 in Capt. Tuttles Co. of Col. Charles Webb's reg. 4)_The Joy Genealogy: Supplement to the Joy Genealogy_ by Helen Bourne Joy Lee. 929.273 J84l, p.67 and 80. P. 67 says he died age 96. Farmer; removed from Rehoboth to Guildford, Windham Co, VT abt 1766; served 1758-59 in French and Indian War; platoon officer under Genl. Ruggles at taking of Fort Ticonderoga 1775 and at Crown Point [Am. Rev.]; Justice of the Peace; called "Squire Joy" (Joy Fam NY 1876.)

Possibly cousins: A David Joy listed in Plainfield, NH 15,280 p. 11 tax
list, also Ebenezar, Benjamin Jr. and Benjamin Joy (Plainfield town recs. 1787).
David Joy is taxed 13 sh 3 p, the others: Benj 3/2, Ben. Jr. 6/4; Ebenezar 3/.
Also an Abigail Joy md Nathan Andrews 13 Mar 1789, both of Plainfield, 15,279,
item 2 p. 58. David Joy is mentioned on p. 15

5) DEATH: given as 1809 on archive rec as 1809 (year only). This could be the
date of a will, as he is listed as "Esquire" on tombstone. Date shown is from
that stone, in Gravesville Cem., one of 3 cem.s in Russia, Herkimer, New York.
Film #1,435,717 page 161. Says died Jan. 26, 1811, age 86.

"I have been searching, with little success, for information about a 'Comfort Joy' who appeared in west Kentucky and southeast Illinois about 1800.

"A few intriguing bits can be found: this individual lived about 1800 (or a little earlier) in Livingston county KY (area of Smithland, Eddyville, etc); his name appears on a petition dated 1805 regarding land claims close to Fort Massac on the Ohio River (Illinois); at about that same time, he is found operating a ferry on the Big Muddy River in southern Illinois; and soon after that, he is said to have been killed in an accident on his way to haul salt from a saline.

"I believe this Joy was associated in same way with a Hazel family which lived in Livingston county about 1798-1805 and about 1805 forward in Pope county IL. I have noted a marriage between a Hazel woman and an unnamed Joy in Virginia, in the latter 1700s.

"The given name Comfort, as you know, appears in the Joy family in Vermont and elsewhere, but I can't find any potential connection to the Comfort in KY/IL."

11. Benjamin JOY

Supplement gives descendants, p. 68, but these are from a different Benjamin Joy. 1-30-01 e-mail from Colleen Nielson" corrects this "... problem with one of the children of "Uncle" David Joy. It concerns his son, Benjamin. From your notes on Benjamin you found him in a supplement to the "Joy Genealogy". It is true that there is a Benjamin Joy who married Sophie Bridge and his descendents are listed there. This is the work of Sally Guadagni of Newport Center, Vermont. I know her well and she gave me the information there which concerns her family. This Benjamin Joy, born abt 1765 in Killingly CT, is the son of Ephraim and Elizabeth (Pool) Joy and Ephraim is Sally's ancestor [possibly the one who died 12 Jun 1824 in Montgomery Co, Vermont and was buried there]. This is the Benjamin who married Sophie Bridge. "Uncle" David's son Benjamin, did, indeed, die early. He is given as born 17 Feb 1767 in "The Joy Genealoy", pg 80." Thank you, Colleen!
