"George Haas died at his home in Allport on Saturday morning, March 30th [1907], of cancer, after an illness of six months duration , aged 44 years. The deceased was a well known and progressive resident of that community, being a stone mason by trade.  He is survived by a widow [Bertha, nee. Hohnke] and nine children, who have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.

"The funeral took place on Monday morning from the Catholic Church Morrisdale [St Agnes], of which church the deceased was a member. The services were in charge of the Rev. Father Fisher."

HASS, Nicholas, 1897-1920; WW I veteran dies in accident at Kyler Mines

" Nicholas Haas Meets Instant Death by Fall of Rock."

"A distressing fatality occurred this (Wednesday) morning about 7 o'clock at the Kyler Mines, near Munson, operated by the Pennsylvania Caol and Coke Company."

"The victim was Nicholas Haas, a well known young resident of Allport, who met instant death by a fall of rock. The young man was engaged in mining coal, and his death , so unexpected and in the manner indicated, is a sad blow to his many friends. He was industrious, genial and popular and his death will be a loss keenly felt in the community where most of his life has been spent."

Deceased, a son of the late George Haas, was aged about 22 years, unmarried, and is suvived by his mother , Mrs. Lars Turnquist [Bertha, nee. Hohnke], and the following brothers and sisters, viz: William, residing in the West: John, Lewis, Paul, Leo, Margaret and Martha, at home, and Tillie, wife of Lawrence [sic, should be Clarence] Gable, of Kylertown."

He was one of four brothers who served faithfully many months in the United States service during the World War (I).

HAAS, Thomas H., (1928-2007); WW II Veteran

MORRISDALE - Thomas H. Haas, 78, of Morrisdale [PA] died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona. Hospital Campus [PA].  Born Oct. 24, 1928, at Morrisdale, he was a son of John G.and Cora Mae (Emigh) Haas. Mr. Haas was affiliated with St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Morrisdale. He was a member of the Lincoln Club, Hawk Run, AARP and the American Legion Post No. 945, Wormleysburg. Mr. Haas was a graduate of the former Morris Township High School, Class of 1946, and played on the football team. Earlier in  life, Mr. Haas worked in the lumber industry.  He also worked in the automobile industry in Buffalo, N.Y.  He retired as a technical sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after 27 years of service, having worked as a telephone switching technician, traveling to bases throughout the U.S. and abroad.

He is survived by a sister, Mildred TOTH, of Bellevue, Washington, and three nieces. Mr. Haas was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John " Jack" Haas.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Strange & Weaver Funeral Service; Morrisdale, with the Very Rev. Father Gregory A. Kirsch officiating.  Interment will be at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Cemetery, Morrisdale. Full military honor will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.

STEMPFLY, Joseph John, (1862-1925). Swiss immigrant; husband of Amelia Striech.

"Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. McClarren, 109 Third street [Altoona, PA], at 3:30 yesterday morning [9 Feb 1925] of a complication of diseases after an illness of several months. The deceased was born in Switzerland on May 15, 1863, and came to America at the age of 18 years. He had resided in Clearfield and came to Altoona last October to make his home with a daughter. Surviving are the following children: John of Farmington, Minnesota., W. C. [William Carl Stempfly] of Philipsburg, PA, Mrs. McClarren [born Mary E. Stempfly], at whose home he died, and Edna also of Altoona. Fourteen grandchildren also survive. He was the last of his immediate family. Funeral services will be conducted at the home of the daughter tomorrow evening  at 7:30 o'clock, the service to be in charge of Rev. A. J. Rudiell of the Bethany Lutheran church. The remains will be taken to Osceola Mills, Wed morning [11 Feb 1925] and interment will be made there at 11:30 o'clock."

WAGNER, Alice (1909-2002). Well known teacher in Houtzdale area; a "book" of our family history is gone.

"HOUTZDALE - Alice C. Wagner, 93, of West Moshannon, Houtzdale RD, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at 9:20 a.m. at TLC Manor, Brisbin."

"Born Feb. 16, 1909, in West Moshannon, she was a daughter of William and Bertha (Kramp) Wagner."

"Miss Wagner attended the first class from the Woodward Township School, which included four years of high school, graduating in 1927. She graduated from Indiana and Lock Haven universities, where she obtained her teaching degree.

"At the age of 18, and at a time when students would build a fire to keep the classroom warm. Miss Wagner began her teaching career at the Happy Valley School in Sanborn, teaching all eight grades. She also taught all grades in the Whiteside Grade School and retired in 1972 from Woodward Grade School. Her career in teaching spanned 45 years."

"Miss Wagner was a member of Faith United Lutheran Church, Houtzdale. She taught Sunday school for Beulah School and Faith United Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Through her church, she made dressings for cancer patients on behalf of the American Cancer Society. She was past president of the church's Ladies Aid and Naomi Circle for many years."

"She was the first woman on the council of St. John's Lutheran Church, Houtzdale, and totaled the weekly offerings for St. John's Church for 40 years.  She also was past president of the Lutheran League and a member of the Retired Teachers Association."

"Miss Wagner crotcheted over 100 lap robes for residents in nursing homes."

"Alice's life revolved around her church and the family of her dearly departed sister, Mabel Jones, who died Nov. 16, 1996, and her beloved niece, A. Mardine Zazworsky, who died Nov. 8, 1988. Her family included her nephew-in-law, Gene Zazworsky, and his  wife, Connie; great-nephew, Douglas Zazworsky and his wife, Kelly; great-nieces, Mrs. Terrance (Janine) Hansel and Mrs. Thomas (Tammy) Samuels, all of Houtzdale RD; great-great-nephews and nieces, Darin and Kendra Zazworsky, Daniel and Allison Hansel and Trevor and Tessa Rae Samuels, all of Houtzdale RD; as well as many distant nieces and nephews.  Miss Wagner was the last of her generation, being preceded in death by her parents: five brothers, Amil, Carl, Harry, Edward and Robert; and two sisters, Mabel Jones and infant sister, Martha."

"Funeral services will be held at Faith United Lutheran Church, Houtzdale, Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert G. Argot Jr. officiating. Friends will be received at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Ramey, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 8-9:30 a.m. Interment will be at Brisbin I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.  The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Faith United Lutheran Church Memorial  Fund, McAteer Street, Houtzdale, PA 16651."

"Mrs. Leah Lewis Lininger, wife of D.[Delbert] C. LININGER, a former resident of Philipsburg [PA], died at her house in Austin, PA, on Wednesday, January 23rd, 1929, following an illness of three weeks, aged 43 years."

"Besides her husband, she leaves a little daughter, Marcia, aged 7 years, a daughter and son by former marriage. Her aged mother, Mrs. Eleanor LEWIS and three brothers, Henry, William, and Samual Lewis."

"Mrs. Lininger still retained her membership in the Church of Christ, Philipsburg [PA], but since moving to Austin attended the Methodist Church and was a faithful member of the Gleaner Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the WCTH, The Rebekah Lodge, and Rose Klan, holding offices in these organizations at the time of her death. She was a woman of many pleasant graces and of an unusually cheerful disposition and to know her was to love her. Funeral Services were held in the Austin Methodist Episcopal Church on Sunday afternoon, Jan 27th with burial at Emporium [PA]."

"Daughter of Robert and Ella (Wagner) Grove. Died in Clearfield [PA] on November 23, 2005, at the age of 85. Member and past president of the Ladies Auxillary of the american Legion in Houtadale, the Pilipsburg BPW and an active volunter at the Hollidaysburg Lutheran Home. She was a very active communtiy service volunteer."

"She was a retired elementary school teacher with the Philisburg- Osceola School [PA] District. She graduated from Woodard High School, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University."

"She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Robert, Charles, Clifford R. and John "Jack" Grove. She is survived by her brother, Warren (Barney) Grove and his wife, Margaret, of Houtzdale, a sister-in-law, Anastasia Grove, wife of Clifford of Johnstown, and 3 nieces, Sara Grove of Chambersburg, Anastasia Watts of Kane and Mary Alicia Grove-Stover of Richmond, VA.."

"A Memorial service will be held at the Faith United Lutheran Church in Houtzdale on Saturday, Dec 3, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Brent Jenkins will officiate, assisted by Pastor Andrew Jerome and Monsignor Desmond McGee."

"The deceased was a native of Germany, but has for years lived in this country, and has long been an honored resident of Allport."

"Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his death six children, viz: Mrs. C. W. [Paulina] Fleck, of Patton; Mrs. R. [Emma] Thompson, of Windber; A.C. [August Carl] Hohnke, of Portage; Mrs. Laurenson (sic, should be Albertina Lorenzen), Mrs. Turnkest (sic, should be Bertha Turnquist] and Lewis Hohnke, of Allport."

"The little village of Allport has lost another of its best known and most highly esteemed residents in the passing away of Mrs. Tillie Hohnke, widow of Julius Hohnke, who died on Wednesday, May 9th, 1923 at 11 o'clock p. m. The result of infirmities incident to her advanced age".

"The deceased was born in Germany on January 5, 1841, making her age 82 years, 4 months, and 5 days. With her husband and children she came to this country in 1888, first locating in Houtzdale and one year later moving to Peale.  After a sojourn of two years in the latter place, the family moved to Allport, where the deceased has since resided.  Her husband died in 1908."

"Mrs. Hohnke was a member of the Lutheran Church, a devoted Christian, and a truly good woman- mother, kindly, neighborly, and possessing such graces generally as to endear her to hundreds who became acquainted with her and by whom her death will be most sincerely mourned."

"She was the last of her generation, but surviving are the following sons and daughters, vis: A. C. Hohnke, Clymer; Louis Hohnke, Philipsburg; Mrs. Lars [Bertha] Turnquist, Allport; Mrs. C. H. [Paulena] Fleck, Clearfield; Mrs. V. R. [Emma] Thompson, Windber, and Mrs. Lorenz [Albertina] Lorenzen, of Philipsburg."

"The funeral will take place on Saturday, afternoon at 2 o'clock from her home."

"Mrs. Sarah Samuels Dies at her Utahville Home [Clearfield Co, PA]. Was exemplary Christian woman, death follows stroke, was native of Wales. Located here with her husband forty years Ago.

"The Death of Mrs. Samuels occurred at her home at Utahville, on Wednesday morning, Jan 30, 1924, at half past nine o'clock, following a stroke which she suffered the Saturday morning previous. She retained full consciousness and knew all up unto the end.

"With her husband Thomas Samuels she came to America and located here in this Houtzdale community over forty years ago, and it was in this community that they reared a fine family of children. The family moved from West Houtzdale to Ramey were Mr. Samuel died in 1910.

"Mrs. Samuels was a very active woman all her life and a life long member of the Baptist church always attending zealously to her various church duties. she was a good Christian lady a kindly mother and  neighbor whose death has saddened many hearts. On the Thursday previous to her death, she walked from her home a distance of nearly 2 miles to Beccaria to call on friends and do some shopping. She was born in Wales on Apr 13, 1846, making her age 77 years, 9 months and 17 days.

"The body was brought to the home of her niece, Mrs. George [Maria] Lobb in Brisbin, where it rested until Saturday afternoon, services having been conducted in the Brisbin Baptist church at 2 o'clock, Rev J. E. Gindlesperger officiating, and interment was made in the Brisbin cemetery. Mrs. Samuels had raised Mrs. [Maria] Lobb from a little child which made her affections for her more like a mother than an aunt."

"She leaves the following children to mourn the death of a loving and compassionate mother: Daniel of West Moshannon; Thomas, of Utahville; Mrs. James [Jane or "Jennie"] Burkholder, of Juniata, and Cyrus, of Brownsville, PA, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral."

"The following relatives and friends from a distance were here at the funeral, Joseph Jarvis, Mrs. Thomas Evans and Samuel Bile of Scranton, Mrs. Julius Courtot of Indiana [Co, PA]."
