Russell, Thomas W., 1847-1928, son of Thomas and Jane, nee. McNally

REF: From The Barnesboro Star, Thursday, 10 Jan 1929, page 7 (Available on microfilm at Barnesboro, PA, public library):

"Death of Thomas Russell, Sr."

"Thomas Russell, one of the best known citizens of Barnesboro died on Thursday, December 27th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Janet Sherwin."

"Mr Russell had been bedfast for over a year, but up to the time he took to his bed was remarkably robust for a man of his age."

"Born in Napier Square, near Holytown, [Bothwell parish] Lanarkshire Scotland, and when but a small boy his parents moved to the north of England where he resided until 1880. In that year he emigrated to the U.S. settling at Houtzdale, Clearfield County. He came to Barnesboro in 1900 and lived here up until his death."

"Married at the age of 20 to Ellen Hartley, who died at Houtzdale. Two children, June Ann and Alma Emma, died when quite young, and a married daughter, Mrs. Otto Strike, in 1918 at Detroit, MI."

"The following children survive him: Nicholson of Johnstown, PA; Thomas Jr. Philadelphia; Mrs. Jennie Gruelling [sic], Pittsburgh; and Mrs. Janet Sherwin, Barnesboro, at whose home he died."

"He was one of the oldest members of Masonic Lodge 515 Osceola Mills, of Williamsport Consistory, and of Jaffa Shrine, Altoona."

"He was a great student and lover of Bobby Burns, memorizing many of his poems. 'The Cotters Saturday Night', 'The Two Dogs', 'Man was Made to Mourn", "The Wee Mouse", and Burns' "Letters to his young friend" were always at his tongue's end. He often said that when a small boy, his father who was somewhat of a poet himself, used to gather him, and the other children around his knee, and recite to them Burns' poems. All through his life, Burns was his constant friend and companion. Another of his favorites was the poem often quoted by Abraham Lincoln: "Why should the Spirits of the Mortals be Proud" [by Robert Burns] and only a short time before he went to his bed, he surprized his friends by reciting this entire poem. Coming from a man of his years, a typical Scotchman with hoary head and of venerable appearance it created an impression on the minds of his hearers that they will never forget."

"Intensely democratic in his views on life, and a great lover of the common people his passing leaves a vacant place that will be hard to fill."

"The funeral arrangements at Barnesboro were in charge of the Merit Club, and the grave at Houtzdale. The Oseola Lodge took charge."

"From men like him, old Scotio's grandeur springs,
That make her lord at home, rever'd abroad,
Princes and Lords are but the breath of Kings,
An honest man's the noblest work of God"
