Samuel T. BARTLETT was born Dec 11, 1818 in Henry Co., Kentucky, the son of Samuel BARTLETT and Elizabeth OWENS, she the daughter of Mason OWENS of King George Co., VA. About 1828-1829 his family left Kentucky and moved to Montgomery Co., Illinois, where he married on Oct. 2, 1836 Martha MAXEY, dau of Edward MAXEY and Nancy BARRY. He died on Aug. 27, 1893 and Martha died five months later on Jan. 20, 1894. Both are buried, as are several of their children, in Irving Cemetery in Montgomery County. [Sandra G. Taylor]

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF Samuel T. BARTLETT Deceased.

I Samuel T. BARTLETT of the County of Montgomery and State of Illinois being of sound mind and disposing memory do make and publish this my last will and testament.

1st I desire that all my just debts and my funeral expenses be fully paid.

2 It is my will wish and bequest that at my death my beloved wife Martha BARTLETT have the entire control, use, possession and occupancy of the house we now live in also the rents, issues and profits of the brick store? building adjoining said dwelling house for and during natural life. said dwelling house for and during her natural life [written twice]. Said dwelling house and store building are situated on lots One (1) Two (2) and Three 3 in Block no Twelve (12) in the Village of Irving in said County and State.

I further give and bequeath to my said wife all the household and kitchen furniture. I also give, devise and bequeath to her for and during her natural life the rents, issues and profits of the following described real estate to Wit. The East half of the north west quarter and the South half of the north east quarter and the north East quarter of the north East quarter of the north east quarter and of the south west quarter of the North West quarter of section Twenty Three 23 commencing at the north east corner of said tract running thence south west parallel with the J & St L ? Rail Road to the south line of said quarter section thence East to the South West quarter of the South West quarter of said section thence North to the place of beginning containing Two Hundred 200 acres of land more or less All of said lands are situated in Section Twenty three 23 Township nine 9 North range three 3 West of the third 3rd Principle Meridian in Montgomery County State of Illinois. I also give and bequeath to my said wife the sum of One Thousand Dollars to be paid her by my executors hereinafter named out of the first money coming into their hands from my estate. Said bequeath above given are to be accepted by my said wife in lien? of Homestead and dower? or any other allowance to her from my estate. If my said wife should die before the one thousand dollars is paid it shall remain and be a part of my estate.

3rd I give and bequeath to each of my Grandsons William BARTLETT and Samuel BARTLETT the sum of four Hundred $400 Dollars said amount to be paid during the first year after my death. This I desire to be in full for their share of my estate, the said William and Samuel BARTLETT are the children of my son George BARTLETT now deceased.

4th I give and bequeath to each of my Granddaughters Stella MILLER and Gertie BARTLETT the sum of Ten $10 Dollars, said amount to be paid during the first year after my death. This I desire and intend to be their full share of my estate. The said Stella MILLER and Gertie BARTLETT are the children of my son Edward BARTLETT now deceased.

5th All the rest and residue of my property both Real and Personal including all the lands and Town lots above described after the death of my wife I devise and bequeath to my children who are now living to Wit: John W. BARTLETT, Charles L. BARTLETT, Henry J. BARTLETT, Hiram R. BARTLETT, Samuel D. BARTLETT and Mary NICKEY to be divided among them share and share alike. It being my intention to give to each of my said children above an equal share or portion of my estate.

6th I hereby appoint my sons Charles L. BARTLETT and Henry J. BARTLETT the executors of this my last Will and Testament with full power to sell and convey any and all of my said property both personal and real estate and convert the same into money and distribute the same among my said children according to the provisions of this will.. I also direct said executors to sell said real estate either at public or private sale as shall appear to him to be for the best interest of said estate.

7th I further desire that my said executors be required by the Court to give bond with such of my children as security as are willing to sign said bond and that no further bond or security shall be required of them.

Given under my hand and seal this Seventh day of August A.D. 1893.

PROOF OF WILL

State of Illinois Montgomery County. In the County Court of said County. In Probate, August Term, A. D. 1893.

Personally appeared in open Court C. B. MCKINNEY, W. B. WILLIAMS and John T. MCDAVID Jr. subscribing witnesses to the annexed instrument of writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of Samuel T. BARTLETT late of said County, deceased, who being duly sworn according to law, do depose and say, each for himself, that they were present and saw the said Samuel T. BARTLETT sign said will in their presence, and that they believe that the said testator was of sound mind and memory, of lawful age, and under no constraint when they signed said will.

Subscribed and sworn to in open Court this 29th day of August A. D. 1893.
