Woodford County, Kentucky 1796


Note: Most of the below bond was in block print (as if it were a form to be filled in), with the words/dates, which I�ve shown here in italics, written in. The surnames were not capitalized in the original document. [..sgt]


KNOW all Men by these presents, that We Simon HANCOCK and Henry WATKINS are held and firmly bound unto Isaac SHELBY Esq; Governor, or Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, in the just and full Sum of FIFTY POUNDS, current Money of Kentucky; to whom payment well and truly to be made to our said Governor, and his Successors, for the use of the commonwealth, we bind ourselves, our Heirs, Executors and Administrators, jointly, severally and firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated this 5th day of April 1796 in the 4th Year of the Commonwealth.

The condition of the above Obligation is such, that, Whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be held and solemnized between the above bound Simon HANCOCK and Martha BARTLETT wherefore, if there be no lawful impediment to the said Marriage, then the above Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

PRENUPTIAL DEED OF GIFT
SIMON HANCOCK to MARTHA BARTLETT
April 11, 1796

To all to whom these presents shall come or may concern Whereas a contract of Marriage hath been made and is shortly to be celibrated [sic] between Simon HANCOCK of the County of Franklin and Martha BARTLETT of the County of Woodford, Be it therefore known to all ^men^ that the said Simon HANCOCK do by these presents make over to the said Martha BARTLETT three Negros towit: Bobb, Milley and Abraham in the following manner that is to say, should the said Martha BARTLETT be the longest liver she is to possess the Negroes till her day of Death or day of second Marriage which shall first happen and on the first of the aforesaid days to wit: of death or second marriage the said Negros are to belong to and be the property of the issue of such marriage (if any) but if in case the said Martha should have no issue by the said Simon HANCOCK then the said three Negroes and the increase of the Female return to my children anything herein contained not withstanding and further it is agreed between the contracting parties to these presents that this writing shall not either party from the full enjoyment of any other estate which either of them now possess or shall at any time hereafter come to the possession of where by decent, gift, purchase or any other wise in the same manner & to every intent & purpose whatsoever as if these presents had never been made. In Testimony Whereof as well the said Simon HANCOCK and the said Martha BARTLETT have hereunto set our hands and seals this 11th day of April 1796.
