His Social Security Number was 523-05-2364.1 Bernard Theodore Willis was born on 9 May 1908 at York County, Nebraska. He was the son of James Willis and May (Miriam) Amanda Knight. He was too old to join military during WWII but he persisted & the USMC finally let him in as an ambulance driver, but in places like the Battle of Okinawa, job descriptions swiftly evaporate. He gave my Uncle Don some japanese curency he had acquired, while in the South Pacific. His nephew Don Thorne & niece Geraldine Thorne-Holbrook, remember their Uncle Bernard warmly. He was evidently, a very patriotic American, which would be in keeping with his Knight/Hollinshead family background. The Willis Family was newly American but Bernard's Granfather Benjamin H. Willis freely signed away his rights, as a British subject to become an American Citizen in Whiteside County, Illinois in 1868.
I remember my Dad Voyle talking about his Uncle Bernard. He must have been a loving warm guy, to have left all those warm & good feelings behind. - P. V. Thorne.1 Bernard Theodore Willis died in July 1954 at Colorado at age 46 years and 1 month.

Margarete Neumann

b. 16 January 1878, d. 15 August 1958
Relatives lived in Tannenberg. They owned a large estate there. The relative (relationship: cousin?) was the owner. At Tannenberg (now Stebark), Wojewodztwo Warminsko-Mazurskie, Polska.1 The nationality of Margarete Neumann was Prussian. A sister or cousin was a hatmaker. Old pictures of Oma showed her in big stylish hats. The family was otherwise well-to-do, and Mom remembers an old photo album, long lost, showing men with beards and uniforms.1 Her relatives in Brazil returned to fight for Prussia in World War I from a sense of duty to the Prussian state, and afterwards returned to Brazil. Upon their return the Brazilian government granted them some islands off the coast.1 Mom says some of her grandmother's family (Uncles, Cousins, Brothers of Margaret?) went ot Brasil following WWI. There, in gratitude, the Brazilian Government bestowed on these immigrants land on islands off of Rio De Janerio. She was Evangelical. She was born on 16 January 1878 at Arnhausen (now Lipie), Kreis Belgard (now Koszalin), Wojewodztwo Zachodniopomorskie, Polska. Civil Records in the Köslin / Koszalin archive cover Births 1874 - 1895. She married Otto Freidank, son of Franz Freidank, in 1905 at Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany.2,1 Margarete Neumann and N. N. Krüger lived after 1914 at Sonnewalde, by Finsterwalde, Kreis Niederlausitz, Brandenburg, Germany; After Otto Friedank's early death, Margaret moved in with a relative (cousin?), Hr. Kruger, who was also a widower. Mom remembers him as her "Opa." When this Hr. Kruger died, he wished to pass on to the Freidanks the residence in Sonnefelde. However, this was in Eastern Germany, and following the war, noone would take the offer up.1 Margarete Neumann would walk from Sonnewalde to Finsterwalde on market days, about five miles.1 As of before 1955, Margarete Neumann lived at Enge Straße #14, Sonnewalde, Kreis Niederauslitz, Brandenburg, Germany.1 She died on 15 August 1958 at Sonnewalde, by Finsterwalde, Brandenburg, Germany, at age 80 years, 6 months and 30 days.1 Margarete Neumann was buried in Sonnewalde, Germany. There is a picture of her tombstone.1

I had just been dismissed from St. Micheal's Hospital and was not strong enough to go out and seek work". My guess is that the stories of a family fortune back in Scotland circulated in the family long before Rose Alcock came on the scene and she heard about it while staying with Harriet and built upon this to perpetrate a scam.1 Harriet Ruthelta Stewart was born on 28 September 1869 at Ontario, Canada.1 She was the daughter of Daniel Stewart and Mary Ann Graham.2

Charles Calkins Thorne

b. 23 April 1888, d. 15 May 1961
"My grandpa was a very funny man. He lived many miles away and loved arriving unannounced and making lots of racket to surprise my dad. His uncle marvin calkins had a son named charles calkins. I suppose this is from whence, came my grandad's name. As I sit here, I just realized that I only remember being in my grandfather Thorne's home twice (& he never knew his grandparents). Perhaps this is the reason, I have pursued this history so far.
"My Grandpop was a really committed kind of guy. I have nothing but wonderful memories from him. I remember how great a hunter & shot, he was. He loved fishing more than anyone I have known. He was a true woodsman, having done this project on my family, I understand Charles Calkins Thorne, much more. He was my Grandfather & my sister & I loved him deeply.
"It always hurt me deeply, when, as a young child, I constantly heard that another Grandson was his favorite. And there I was, the only one to carry on his Family name after my Uncle Don's son died. I am 51 years old, why would that still bother me?
Charles Calkins Thorne is the 5th cousin of Thorn Dickinson, the Thorne family geneologist. They were both descendants of Samuel Thorne of Cortlandt Manor & Durchess County, New York." - P. V. Thorne.1 Charles Calkins Thorne was born on 23 April 1888 at Highmore, South Dakota. My cousin Carol Houck gives Grampa's BP as Charleston, NE? He married Lillie Adelia Willis, daughter of James Willis and May (Miriam) Amanda Knight, on 1 January 1908 at York County, Nebraska. Charles Calkins Thorne and Lillie Adelia Willis lived on 18 June 1942 at 321 West 2nd St., North Platte, Nebraska.1 As of 1961, Charles Calkins Thorne lived at 202 East 16th St., York, Nebraska.1 He died on 15 May 1961 at Aurora, Nebraska, at age 73 years and 22 days. Charles Calkins Thorne died of Hodgkin's Disease. He was at our home in North Platte, Nebraska & I remember him asking my Dad V.C. Thorne to look at some strange lumps that had popped up on his neck. About 6 months later He was dead.
My Grandad's last words on this planet were to his 2nd Wife Belva. He is said to have told her ; 'I hate to go off & die on you, but I guess I'm going to have to.' Moments later He was gone.1 Charles Calkins Thorne was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, California. After his death he was transported by train to California where he is buried with my Grandmom Lillie Willis in Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Glendale, California.1
