I would put good money on Tina's dad's name being Henry. 2nd, the places are all correct. Matthew and Tina spent time in Mercer County, Kentucky, and then moved on to Knox County, Indiana. Sarah was born in Kentucky. She married in Greene County, Indiana. Knox County is adjacent to Greene County. No stretch there. 3rd, the ages are all possible. This is our match! (Worked on this since first entering Hendrick Matthyse Smock, #1998. I'm up to over #3500 now. That means 1,500 people entered (concentrating exclusively on the Smock family) before the connection came. The David L. Smock report identified Matthew as son of Jan, and his wife as the Tina Scomp, whose marriage I'd found early, just couldn't place..

Mehitable May Applebee was named for her mother's mother. She was born on 8 January 1840 at Lisbon (formerly Concord), Grafton County, New Hampshire.2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Benjamin Applebee and Mary Ann Morse.1 She was found in the household of Moses Page and "Mary A." in 1850, along with Nathan Applebee. Following Mehitable and Nathan were two Page sons, younger in years. If Mehitable and Nathan were sons of Mary A. from a previous marriage, why didn't they get a new name when Mary A. remarried? Perhaps "Mary A." means "Mary Applebee" and she was their aunt, and both parents of Mehitable and Nathan were dead. Mary was old enough to be their mother, Nathan born when she was 18. However, "Mary A." in the census return implies Mary Applebee Page, and thus would more likely be their aunt. Early census returns, 1830 and 1840 would provide a clearer picture. - Followup: Mary Ann Morse, widow of Benjamin Appleby. Before 1850.

A Families Tale: There are two stories told in this family about why James Bruce Carmichael came to the New World, and why he took the name of his mother, Stewart. One story has it that he got in a terrible fight with his brother. The fight was such that the brother was left nearly dead and James ran from justice, to Canada, and not sure if the brother lived or died, he changed his name to Stewart. (He may have boarded ship as a Stewart as well.) He never had contact again with Scotland, and the family has been in the dark about it's familial origins since. The second story has it that he may have perpetrated some petty crime. Even the act of stealing a lamb (these being harsh times in Scotland, you do what you had to to eat) brought about stern punishment: fifteen lashes, five each in three separate villages, and then banishment from the shores of Scotland. A simple run-in with the law could have resulted in a need to go to Canada. Someday the truth will come out. In the either case, a brother might have come along with him. - Robert Brian Stewart, from the tales told him by Eugene Stewart, 26 Mar 1998. Another Families Tale: "My (Brian Bartley) grandfather (Stanley Sidney Stewart) also related a story about how when the family was still living in the Trenton area that a lawyer came right out onto the log raft where James and some of his grown sons were working to try to get him to accept an inheritance from his father, but that James would not acknowledge the relationship because of some resentment against his father."3 The fact that there was an inheritance pre-dated the Alcock scam. Also called James Bruce Carmichael.4,5 James Carmichael Stewart was born after 3 April 1798. If age 73 at next birthday per 1871 census. He was born in 1799 at Hatton House?, near Glasgow?, Scotland!.6,7 He was born on 24 April 1800 at Argylshire, Scotland.4,2,8,9,5 He was the son of Lord Bruce Carmichael and Phoebe Stewart. James Carmichael Stewart was christened on 22 June 1801 at Wiston & Roberton District, Lanarkshire, Scotland; This is a possible christning, James Carmichael, by father, James Carmichael, mother's name not noted.10 He immigrated to Canada arriving 1816; "Grandma [Adah Elizabeth Stewart] always told us that James fled Scotland with a brother and that there had been some kind of trouble."2,5 As of after 1816, also called James Bruce Carmichael Stewart. "The notes also mention that James Stewart landed on the Trent River."11 He married Ann Collier, daughter of Peter Collier and Elizabeth Hicks, on 8 June 1823 at Newcastle, Ontario, Canada; Prior to 1831, it was illegal for Methodists and others to perform marriages in Upper Canada; but legal for Presbyterian. The marriage of James and Ann is not in the Newcastle Registers for that reason.12,2 James Carmichael Stewart purchased land 25 November 1839 at Percy Township, Ontario, Canada. Purchased from the Canada Company the North 1/2 of Lot 4, Concession 3, and the South 1/2 of Lot 5, Concession 5. (No record of the deed being issued in the index.).13 He was Presbyterian.14

On 12 January 1852, James Carmichael Stewart was Head of Household on the census at Percy Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada, Details provided: "Yeoman, age 52 (next birthday).". Enumerated with him were Ann Collier, Mary Ann Stewart, Richard Stewart Sr., James B. Stewart, Francis Stewart, Elizabeth Jane Stewart and Phoebe Stewart.14

James Carmichael Stewart had descendants named for him, namely: James Henry Stewart.

On 2 April 1871, James Carmichael Stewart was Head of Household on the census at Brock Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada, Details provided: "Age 73 (at next birthday); born in Scotland; religion: Church of Scotland; origin: Scotch; Yeoman (penciled in after: Farmer).". Enumerated with him were Ann Collier, James B. Stewart, Margaret Argue, Arsnesithy J. Stewart, Richard Stewart, Elizabeth A. Stewart, Pheobe Stewart and Ellen Amanda Stewart.15,16

James Carmichael Stewart died on 11 August 1882 at the home of son James on Islay St., Lot 2, Concession 5, Thorah, Thorah (now Brock) Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada, at age 82 years, 3 months and 18 days.3,5 James Carmichael Stewart was buried in Old Church Cemetery (stone Presbyterian Church), Beaverton, Durham County, Ontario, Canada. Thorah Township's Thomson Cemetery (abandoned)- Orange Hall, Beaverton, Ontario?17
"The Swindle: A picture of James Bruce Carmichael, at age 14 or 15, was said to have been seen hanging in Hutton Castle, Scotland. Hutton Castle is found in one of Berwick, Peebles, Roxburgh or Selkirk Counties, built in the 16th Century, and built in the style of a Towers or Tower Houses, a style mainly around 1540-1680. This picture, or the story of this picture, may have been the prop in a scam attempted on this family (as well as many other American familys from their ancestors European homes). A Ms. Rose Alcock presented herself to the family in Canada and Michigan. She claimed she was next of kin, her mother was a sister who married a brother of Bruce (the age difference was commented on) and as next of kin the Alcock's got to live in the castle. She exclaimed that the man in a picture on the wall in one of their homes resembled or matched the one in the portrait in Hutton Castle. Later, a law firm in Scotland got in touch with the Stewart's, and the family gave Power of Attorney to Richard Manley, son of John Sr., to handle all arrangements. This was an inheritance and said to be in the amount of some $10,000 per family. However, it's release required that some fees, of the "usual kind," to be paid for up front. Apparently the money was raised and sent, and Manley was notified to meet the lawyer who would arrive by ship. However, while enroute, the story goes, the lawyer received word from Scotland and was ordered to turn right around. Manley never met the lawyer, and Rose Alcock never resurfaced. Eugene (Ralph, William, John, James) and Minerva visited Scotland and found no answers. That noble blood was assumed may have arisen because there was a difference between "Lord" (nobility) and "Laird" (landowner), and this amounted to some confusion as Lairds became Lords without the royal blood as family stories altered reality, as they are wont to do. But an American might not know that, and this was perhaps the hook to catch an unsuspecting American family and fleece them."

"From the Chief of Carmichael: "Thanks for your interesting message and for the congratulations. I became Chief in 1981 after nearly 170 years without a Carmichael chief resident at Carmichael . So although late your congratulations are welcomed even though Scottish Chiefs are not elected as such but have merely proven their seniority in descent from the earliest Carmichaels on record "founders of the family" around 1292. I have not previously heard of your branch of the family or of this brother trouble but I suspect your ancestors were from Appin or Lismore in Argyl where the Carmichaels and Stewarts of Appin were very close. Back in time the illegitimate children of King Jame IV from his Carmichael of Carmichael mistress were Stewarts and their descendants travelled widely and were closely aligned to Stewart of Galloway and Stewart of Appin so there is definitely a strong precedent for your ancestor's decision to drop Carmichael for his wife's Stewart even without the possible murder charge on his brother's life. In this century whilst we were chiefless the Stewarts took Carmichael as a sept and much publicity related thereto in the 1960's and 1970's. Since 1980 I have been reclaiming our rights to Carmichaels as a seperate distinctly different clan. Good luck with your research." - Richard Carmichael of Carmichael (30th Chief) (26th Baron), Lord Carmichael, Thursday, April 09, 1998."

"William H. Philp." "William Huddleston Philp?" If following path his father's name took, John Hamilton Philp, second son named for mother's father, John Hamilton, let's assume William Huddleston is 2nd son, name for Harriet's father, i.e. William Huddleston. Harriet Emily Philp recounts "My father William Philp's family ancestry has been traced back to King Jame's time (early 1600's), our branch of the family was sent to Ireland to quell the riots as officers in the army, another to Australia."4 William H. Philp was related to Lydia Almedia Philp; born to a father born in Canada (English) and a mother born in Ohio.5 William H. Philp was born on 25 March 1835 at Chatham, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.6,7,8 He was the son of John Hamilton Philp and Harriet Huddleston. William H. Philp used the Webster dictionary as his only text book in school but acquired a fair education.4 He was bound, at the age of fourteen, one of a family of 14, to a mechanic to learn a trade in 1849. He was an expert cabinet maker, blacksmith, and watchsmith.4 He enlisted as a Private at the age of 25 in Company A, 5th Infantry Regiment Ohio, on 20 April 1861 at Cincinnati, Ohio. Fifth Infantry. - (Three Months' Service.) Col., Samuel H. Dunning; Lieut.-Col., John H. Patrick; Maj., Charles L. Long. This regiment was organized at Camp Harrison, April 20, 1861, and was recruited principally from young men who resided in Cincinnati and vicinity. It was sent to Camp Dennison on April 23, and was mustered into service from April 29 to May 9.7,9,10 He mustered out from Company A on 24 August 1861. Before the equipment was complete the call for 300,000 troops to serve for three years was issued by the president and the regiment responded immediately to this call, nearly the entire membership signifying their willingness to enter the new organization, the enrollment of which took place between June 15 and 21. Those who did not enlist were mustered out on expiration of term of service from Aug. 24 to Sept.5, 1861. - (It would appear that William did not answer the President's call up.).9 He married Sarah Ann Reader, daughter of Sergeant Joseph Reader and Cynthia Lucinda Thayer, on 10 March 1864 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Her 2nd (Civil War widow).11,12 He had very dark auburn brown hair and beard. He always wore a long beard. He had been a Civil War veteran and was as straight as an arrow, proud as a peacock too.4 William H. Philp and Sarah Ann Reader moved by wagon to what is now the city of Mt. Pleasant in 1866.13 William H. Philp was a blacksmith at Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He opened the first blacksmith shop in town.13 He filed a homestead claim on a piece of land in section 24 of Vernon township and there for years followed the experience of the pioneer settlers of that time which strengthened in the parents and gave to their children the courage to go through regardless of many difficulties.13

On 23 August 1870, William H. Philp was Head of Household on the census at Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan, Details provided: Farmer, age 35, born in Canada, mother of foreign birth (sic), value of real estate $600, value of personal items $225.. Enumerated with him were Sarah Ann Reader, Venona E. Philp, Harriet Emily Philp and Lydia Almedia Philp.14

William H. Philp was a violinst, whistler, and bass singer. He composed and set up music to play at the dances, etc... whistling the tunes as he arranged a new variety to please his listeners.4 He lived in 1876 at Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan.15 He lived in 1879 at Lot #24, Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan.16

On 1 June 1880, William H. Philp was Head of Household on the census at Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan, Details provided: "Male, white, age 45, born in Canada, farmer, father born in Ireland (sic), mother born in Pennsylvania". Enumerated with him were Sarah Ann Reader, Lydia Almedia Philp, George Reader Philp, Mary E. Philp, Venona E. Philp and Harriet Emily Philp.17,18

William H. Philp died on 5 September 1882 at Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan, at age 47 years, 5 months and 11 days. He died at the old homestead after an extended illness.19,20,13 William H. Philp was buried in the Vernon Cemetery, Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan.2
