"The history of Swedish emigration to America goes further back in time than that of the United States. Swedes started to come in 1638, just eighteen years after the landing of the "MAYFLOWER." Unlike the Pilgrim Fathers, the Swedes were not religious dissenters but rather an organized group of colonizers. They had been sent out by the government in Stockholm in order to establish a colony under the Swedish crown in Delaware. The era of NEW SWEDEN ended in 1655, when the colony was lost to the Dutch. But the original settlers remained and kept up their language and culture for a long time. Many of the descendants of the Delaware Swedes became distinguished fighters for freedom in the war against England in 1776. One of them was JOHN MORTON, who gave the decisive vote for independence at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia."
John Morton (Signer) was born on 1 April 1725 at Ridley Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Born posthumously.2,4 He was the son of John Morton Sr. and Mary Archer.2,4 John Morton (Signer) married Ann Justis, daughter of Morton Justis and Brita Walraven, between 28 October 1748 and 29 November 1749; 2nd cousins. John Morton (Signer) was employed with surveying and farming before 1764. He was Sheriff of Ridley County between 1766 and 1769 at Chester, Ridley, Pennsylvania. He was appointed as delegate to the first Continental congress in July 1774 at Phildadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the 2nd cousin, 8x removed (via Marten Martensson, 1606-1706), of the compiler. Declaration of Independence signed on 4 July 1776 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was at Independence Hall where he gave the casting vote of the delegation from Pennsylvania in favor of the Declaration of Independence, and subsequently signed the document on 4 July 1776 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died on 1 April 1777 at Chester, Pennsylvania, at age 52 years. Obituary notice: On Tuesday, the first instant [April 1, 1777] died on his
plantation, four miles this side of Chester, the Honourable JOHN MORTON, 51 years of age; and, attended by a great number of people, he was buried the day following in the burial ground belonging to the Church of England, in Chester, the place of worship he used to frequent. This gentleman was well known for his integrity and probity, and the confidence of the public is best ascertained from the several offices he held--As an Assemblyman for many years; a Magistrate and High Sheriff; and of late as Judge, Speaker of the House, and Member of Congress.--As these were the crowns he received in broad day light, THESE, as well as his excellent amiable character in a domestic, social, civil and religious light, were held up on the Sunday following from 2 Tim. ii.5. in Kingsessing's Church, in the forenoon, and in Chester Church in the afternoon, by the Reverend Commissary of the Swedish Mission on Delaware. He was did not live to witness the change in public sentiment (to support the cause of American Independence from Great Britain), and on his death bed said, "Tell them that they will live to see the hour when they shall acknowledge it to have been the most glorious service that I ever rendered my country.". John Morton (Signer) was buried in Church of England burial Ground, Chester, Pennsylvania. He was was remembered with a monument erected in his memory in the Episcopal churchyard in Chester, PA, on 9 Oct 1845, and a memorial tablet was placed by his grandson in Independence Hall, Philadelphia in 1876, but exact dates are not recorded. In 1845 at Chester, Ridley, Pennsylvania.

The 1st son, but named after his mother's father, a variation of Dutch tradition, where the mother's father had higher social distinction, more money, or was deceased. Adriaen Schamp was baptized on 26 December 1749 at the North Branch Reformed Dutch Church, Readington, Somerset County, New Jersey.2,1 He was the son of Nicolaes Schamp and Antje Aten.1 Adriaen Schamp witnessed the will of Justis Schamp on 28 May 1760 at Readington Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey; Just days before his death, Joost, described as "...weak of Body but sound of Mind and memory" made his last will and testament. Executed at his plantation in "the Township of Reading in the County of Hunterdon," Joost very carefully divided his vast land holdings among his surving children and grandchildren. By it his wife was given the use of the entire estate during her widowhood. At her death or previous to remarriage the estate was to be divided as follows: The two sons of his deceased eldest son George were to receive 1832 acres of the Somerset tract. Another 183 acres of this tract were to be given to the two sons of Nicholas. One hundred acres of this same tract were given to the children of his daughter Janneka, late wife of Dirck Marlet, to be divided among them. The rest was to be divided among his living heirs, both children and grandchildren. The Hunterdon tract was to be divided among the three remaining children. His daughter, Staunchy (aka Christine), wife of Jacobus Cocks, was given a parcel of 111 acres. Another 111 acres went to his daughter Hannah, of who marriage no trace has yet appeared, and the remainder, 278 acres, fell to his son Hendrick, this portion containing the homestead and appears to have been the choice heritage. The two sons of his son George, George and Peter, were to give their five sisters the sum of sixteen pounds each. Not forgotten, Anita, the daughter of Nicholas was to recieve from her brothers a dower equal to that of her five cousins combined, namely eighty pounds. Executors of the will were Hendrick Schomp, his friend George Reading, and his son-in-law Jacobus Cocks.3 Adriaen Schamp married Rebecca Huff, daughter of Isaac Huff and Catherine Van Nest, circa 1769 at New Jersey; His 1st.4 Adriaen Schamp was appeared in the "Memorandim of the money received by Dirck Low concarning the Cark built at the New-Channick" as having contributed œ 0.8.8 in 1772 at the Neshanic Reformed Church, Somerset County, New Jersey.5 He married Catleytie Waldron, daughter of Samuel Waldron, after 1775; His 2nd.

In 1779, Adriaen Schamp appeared on the census at Hillsborough Township, Somerset County, New Jersey, Details provided: Appeared on a Tax List.6

He died between 2 April 1780 and 3 November 1780 at Hillsborough Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. He must have died after a prolonged illness. One of the estate costs paid was for Judedick Tomson "tending Adrian Schomp."1,7,8
