b. circa 1107, d. 1205
Doge di Venezia Enrico Dàndolo was from one of the electoral families who claimed descent from the twelve tribunes by whom the first doge had been elected in 697.1 He appears to have been "a man of uncommon physical and mental strength".1 He was born circa 1107 at Venice, Italy.1,2 He first mentioned as taking part in the war between Venice and the Emperor Manuel Comnenus in 1171.1 He went on a mission to William II of Sicily in 1172.1 He went on a mission again to Constantinople after 1172.1 He was one of the forty electors commissioned, for the first time, to elect the doge in 1178.1 39th Doge of Venice at Italy between 1192 and 1205.1 He was himself elected Doge on 1 June 1192 at Venice, Italy.1 He concluded a treaty of alliance with the Emperor Alexis III of Constantinople in 1198.1 He took the cross as well as several other Venetian nobles and joined the Fourth Crusade in March 1201.1 At the age of almost a hundred he took the cross, and led the expedition against Constantinople; a fearless knight and the first to scale the walls of a city, he was also a distinguished diplomat, and his influence seems to have been predominant in the Fourth Crusade.1 He presided at the council of war held the Abbey of San Stefano, and gave the wisest advice to the barons on 23 June 1203.1 He signed with the crusading barons the treaty partitioning the empire between Venice and the crusaders on 1 May 1204.1 He died in 1205 at Constantinople, Byzantium.1,2

Sir Maurice de Prendergast1

b. say 1150, d. 1205
Sir Maurice de Prendergast was born say 1150. Annals of Ulster 1169: "Loinges Roberd mic Stemin do thiachtain i n-Erinn, h-i forighin Mic Murchadha. / The fleet of Robert FitzStephen came to Ireland in aid of Mac Murchadha."2 He arrived with Robert FitzStephen on 1 May 1169 at Ireland. Maurice de Prendergast and Maurice Fitzgerald are identified as the same man by Gerald of Wales, and said then to have arrived in Ireland on May 1, 1170. This is an error. However, the Miscellaneous Irish Annals states that with Robert FitzStephen in 1167 (1168) was a Maurice FitzGerald.3,4,5 He received grants of land in Counties Tipperary, Waterford, Wicklow, and Wexford.1 He built Ardfinan Castle between 1199 and 1216.1 Prior of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.1 He died in 1205 at Kilmainham near Dublin, Ireland.1

Another continuity with the earlier image of the Byzantines is connected with their physical beauty. The cosmographer al-Qazwini (d.682/1285) states that the Byzantines are mostly white, with blond hair and sturdy bodies. Similarly, the geographer Ibn Sa'id (d.678 or 685/1274 or 1286) stresses the whiteness and blondness of the Byzantines, stating that the inhabitants of the sixth climate are characterized by extreme whiteness, blue eyes, and blond hair and they often have freckles on their faces. These physical attributes were highly valued, as can be deduced from various adab works and special manuals, which delineate the prevalent Arab typology of beauty.4 Her married name was Maria.
