     Bernard II de Balliol, Lord of Bywell is supposed to have been the founder of the fortress on the banks of the Tees called "Bernard Castle".1 He was born circa 1115. He was the son of Bernard I de Balliol of Bywell and Matilda (?). Bernard II de Balliol, Lord of Bywell married Agnes de Picquigny.1 Bernard II de Balliol, Lord of Bywell participated in the victory achieved over the Scots on 22 August 1138 at the Battle of the Standard, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.1 He was taken prisoner at Lincoln with King Stephen.1 He again took up arms, on the incursion ofthe Scots in the 20th Henry II, and joining Robert de Stutevile, proceeded to the relief of Alnwick Castle.1 He seized the king of Scots with his own hand, and sent him prisoner to the castle of Richmod.1 He died in 1188.

The Standards flown were of St. Cuthbert and St. Peter of York. On 22 August 1138 at the Battle of the Standard, Cowton Moor, north of Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.5,1,6 He adhered to King Stephen in his contest with the Empress, and was taken prisoner with Stephen on 2 February 1141 at the Battle of Lincoln.1 King Stephen laid siege to Lincoln castle. Supporters of Maud defeat the besiegers and Stephen is captured. On 2 February 1140/41 at the Battle of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.7,5,8 He accompanied King Louis (VII) of France to the Holy Land, in the 2nd Crusade, taking a land route to Constantinople, between June 1147 and 28 July 1148. He acquired great renown by vanquishing a stout and hardy Pagan in single combat.1 He married Alice de Gant, daughter of Walter de Gant and Maud of Brittany, circa 1151; Her 2nd (widow).1,9 As of after 1154, also called de Mowbray. Roger d' Aubigny assumed on possessing the lands of Robert de Mowbray, on the command of King Henry, the surname de Mowbray after 1154.1 Lord of Axholme Castle at Lincolnshire between 1154 and 1189. He was involved with the rebellion of Prince Henry against King Henry II, losing some of his castles for that, between 1173 and 1174.1 The Great Rebellion: Henry II versus his heir, Henry "the Young King", his two older brothers, the Earl of Leicester, the King of Scots, the King of France, and the Count of Flanders. In 1172/73 at 19 Henry II.10,11 He was so fervent in his piety that he again assumed the cross and made a second journey to the Holy Land, to join the 3rd Crusade, where he was made prisoner and then redeemed by the knights Templars, between 1187 and 1189.1 He died after 1189. Some say he died in the East.1 Roger d' Aubigny was buried in Sures.1 He died in 1205. Some say he returned, and lived fifteen years longer.1 Roger d' Aubigny was buried in Byland Abbey, Yorkshire, England. And he was buried in the abbey.1

     Isabel de Hainaut was born in April 1170 at Valenciennes, Hainault, France.2 She was the daughter of Baudouin V "le Courageux", comte de Hainaut and Marguerite d'Alsace, comtesse de Flandres.1 Isabel de Hainaut married Philippe II "Auguste", roi des Francs, son of Louis VII "le Jeune", roi des Francs and Alix de Champagne, on 28 April 1180 at St. Denis, Paris, France; His 1st.3,4,5,2,6 Isabel de Hainaut and Philippe II "Auguste", roi des Francs were divorced; The marriage was repudiated by Philip because of political reasons. Isabelle's father assisted the Count of Flanders, Philip of Alsace, against the desires of Philip of France who wished to annex Flanders to the French kingdom. She was later reinstated as Queen and bore Philip a son.5 Comtesse d'Artois before 1190.2 Isabel de Hainaut died on 15 March 1190 at Paris, Île-de-France, France, at age 19 years and 11 months.3,4,2 Isabel de Hainaut was buried in the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, Paris, Île-de-France, France.
